Knocking heroes around

Postby Shoggoth Williams » Thu Sep 20, 2012 8:35 am

I want to construct a rule that results in attacks that have a knockback effect. I dont want a character to specifically take points in move object though. Any attack with damage enough should do it, as long as the descriptor would work. For example, Flame Boy's Heat Ray just cooks you from the inside with a microwave descriptor, this could never result in a knockback, but any character with super strength should have some chance of inflicting it. Ranged hits from telekenetic or Force blasts would work too. I was thinking of making it a result either of a critical hit on the attackers part, or maybe a roll of a 1 on a defenders resistance.
Really I would like to see what other people do in their games. M&M doesnt seem to have a real solid mechanic for it, and I miss people getting tossed through entire buildings.

I use the complication rules as knockback is more about drama then physicality. The Hulk and Thor can pound on each other all day and never move until it's time for the knockback to be dramatic to the scene. That works for me.

The gamemaster's guide has knockback rules in it for the gms who don't want to treat knockback as a complication. They're essentially the same rules as were in 2e: failed toughness check by 2 degrees means knockback distance of damage - toughness - modifiers.

Interesting, I've been thinking that the conditions of damage for 2nd and 3rd fails of Toughness were a little weak anyway. I certainly will use knockback as a complication for plot, I hadn't thought about that, but the 2e way seems like a good idea for when my player want to knock the villains about.

I guess you could use throwing distance for range of the effect.

Also, consider Paragon's knockback houserule. It's more of a fundamental change in the system in that it introduces new feats related to Knockback, but it's still a very nice system.

The Strength profile has a power with Knockback included in a str based attack. Its called Massive Knockback. You can easily make the power linked or part of another power. They use move object in the power, but limited to knockback and linked to whatever the attack is causing it. Actually using this power for an NPC as an alternative effect to his main power.

Has anyone created advantages or house rules other than the link above that are working that I can see on here?
