"The Mirror": THIS is a well-known one, featuring the debut of Puck, as Demona uses a Magic Mirror (stolen from the Metropolitan Art Museum- OH HEY I TOTALLY WAS THERE ONCE) tries to get rid of Elisa. Instead, we get her turning into a Gargoyle (thus making Goliath go all googly-eyed at her), then the Clan turns human, then NEW YORK turns to Gargoyles, resulting in all kinds of fun. Elisa starts off undercover as a Museum security guard and OH GOD OH GOD SHE'S WEARING GLASSES COMBINED WITH LONG HAIR AND IS BREAKING MY MIND. Garglisa is kind of a poor design (they'd improve on the concept vastly with Delilah), just being a generic chick with no eyebrows. Demona actually tells Puck "you served the HUMAN, now you serve me!" which is a pretty big hint to future revelations. There's really nice animation in this one, though people have pretty dramatic shadows at the corners of their mouths, making them look a little cherubic (even DEMONA). Goliath makes the classic dude mistake of suggesting a woman looks more attractive now (Elisa immediately retorts with the Woman Response of "did you think I was UGLY before?"). Demona chucks a human Goliath about forty feet on Rockefeller Plaza (this ep is showing nothing but New York Tourist Landmarks- it's even got the token Uncomfortable Shot Of Twin Towers), which is hilariously possible with Strength 4 using the M&M Throwing Rules. Demona gets turned into a human-by-day (HOMINA HOMINA HOMINA... I never quite got the "Gargoyle Chicks as Sex Symbols" thing some fans had, but Demona turning human really made me realize how hot she was without giant clawed feet & hands). When Elisa & Goliath have their "moment" at the end when Elisa shoots down a nearly-spoken line from Goliath, they're basically letting EVERYONE know what's really going on- even the dumb kids knew the two were totally in wuv by this point.

"The Silver Falcon": Broadway & Elisa have a team-up in a neat little Detective Story. Broadway of course gets all his skills from watching movies, and hasn't learned things like "don't jump in front of your partner if they're drawing a bead on someone with a pistol". Broadway yanking up an elevator car by hand is a Goliath-level Strength Feat, by the by, and why I put 'em at the same lifting level (just not damage level). I love how one crook gets a 10-second head-start on Elisa and she automatically assumes he got away completely. Ah, dramatic convenience. There's a meeting at Cleopatra's Needle (they were JUST THERE last episode- though I didn't realize it was so close to the Metropolitan Art Gallery- I musta missed it by only a block or two) with Matt's old FBI partner, who'd show up much later. They finally find the "Silver Falcon" containing the money, and I'll be damned if I'd ever crawl across an ornamental thingie sticking out of a skyscraper, 70 stories up on a windy day. I mean, GEEZ. Then Maza CLIMBS UP THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING without the aid of a ladder or rope or anything. I'm not afraid of heights, but that would terrify the balls off of me.

"Eye of the Beholder": Better known as "The Belle Dress Episode", but it holds up equally well on it's own, with great character moments from Xanatos, and romance abounds. He gets engaged to Fox, but his gift (The Eye of Odin) turns her crazy and into a giant Werefox, a form that will slowly kill her. In desperation, Mister Back-Up Plan has nothing, and basically has to beg Goliath for help, confessing his weakness. Goliath gets the all-time great comeback line of "Only YOU would regard LOVE as a weakness..." The Trio appreciates being able to walk outside on Halloween, and Goliath & Elisa have a romantic moment strolling arm-in-arm (with the FRICKING DRESS OH MY G--- no, I shall restrain myself). It says something that this episode is considered legendary for it's Fanservice when it's really just the female lead dressing like Belle (herself not exactly a daring dresser), showing a tiny bit of cleavage & shoulder, but the part where she rips the dress off to show some thigh-high stockings with a gun-holster is pretty epic (still, not much skin shown). Elisa was so consistently-clad in her jeans, shirt & jacket combo that anything different looks exceptionally hot without coming across as sleazy. Plus they draw her as so genuinely attractive all the time that her showing ANYTHING is absurdly great. Watching these in order, this episode is the one where we can definitely put "Gargoyles" into the rare company of "Greatest Cartoons of All Time"- the dialogue, animation and everything is just perfect. The show can barely contain how awesome it is at this point.

Defenses:
Dodge +14 (DC 24), Parry +14 (DC 24), Toughness +3 (+4 D.Roll), Fortitude +5, Will +8

Complications:
Relationship (Xanatos, Alexander)- Though Fox comes across as an amoral criminal most of the time, she is fiercely devoted to her family. When her son was about to be taken from her, she unleashed her full Mama Bear powers- whipping out a Magical Bolt that knocked OBERON on his ass.
Motivation (Kicks)- Fox does a lot of things just for fun. She could have been guaranteed her father's multi-billion-dollar business, but tried to bring it down alongside Xanatos because that way was more fun.
Responsibility/Secret- Her inner-personality is described as "predatory, self-hating and conflicted" according to Greg Weisman.

Total: Abilities: 80 / Skills: 64--32 / Advantages: 24 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 17 (143)

-Fox has a bit of a weird history on Gargoyles. Not exactly a well-rounded character at first, she started out as a generic money-grubbing mercenary type under cover of being a TV action heroine, as the leader of The Pack. Her canine-themed group ran afoul of Lexington & the other Gargoyles, and then proceeded to become the Official Jobbers of the franchise, repeatedly fighting them in smaller and smaller groups because Demona, Macbeth & Xanatos were the Big Three. But Fox on her own willingly stayed in prison rather than escape, so she ended up with an early parole, where it was revealed she was boinking Xanatos this entire time. You see, his whole plot was to spring The Pack and then come across as a reformed nice-girl, so she could get out LEGALLY, and thus not be a fugitive.

-Fox ended up being "Xanatos' Girlfriend" for a while, not doing nearly as much as the other characters, but she ended up getting her own swack of backstory (this show was REALLY REALLY BIG on introducing generic characters and then giving them mini-novels worth of background information and secrets)- she was the daughter of Halcyon Renard (Reynard... Fox... another literary/folklore reference from Weisman's crew here), a Xanatos rival at Cyberbiotics (the generic rival corporation in the very first story arc- see what I mean about the backgrounds?). Her mother was secretly Titania, Queen of the Fair-Folk or what have you, and she & her original husband Oberon came calling to take Fox's baby for magical training (since Fox didn't learn any). The resulting battle gave Fox a Mama Bear attitude, and helped her character out significantly. She was played pretty well by the girl from NBC's "Just Shoot Me", who gave her a bit of a Femme Fatale edge, though she didn't really do any flirting or seducing (aside from a little chin-stroking of Lex).

-Fox is a PL 8-9 character, with a TON of points devoted to her wide Skill set and Advantages. She's a fantastic fighter, but lacks enough raw power to handle a Gargoyle on her own without firearms. She's pretty much like most of my other "Agent" type builds (Silver Sable, etc.), as she was among the few Pack members to not get pscyo-upgrades partway through the first season, so she stays as a Skill/Shooter type of character. She does have a unique Benefit, as her status as a Child of Oberon (the name for magical creatures in the show) gives her an occasional Hero Point-deducting super-magical Blast of power, but only for a big Complication (ie. her son).

Defenses:
Dodge +9 (+7 Suit, DC 17-19), Parry +9 (+7 Suit, DC 17-19), Toughness +4 (+9 Armour), Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Honour (Believes in Law & Order)
Responsibility (Must Atone)- Dingo authentically feels bad at what he did in his past, and disgust for what his Pack teammates did to their own bodies. He feels as if he doesn't belong in "this freakshow" by the end, and goes off on his own.

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 42 / Defenses: 9 (140)

-Dingo was a nice little character, actually. While most of The Pack were one-note angry mercenaries, he was portrayed as the most level-headed and 'normal' of the bunch, an Australian guy who still preferred just being a Merc, and hated the Pack's descent into common crime. He ESPECIALLY despised the way Wolf, Hyena & Jackal all mutilated their bodies in a grotesque manner, just to be able to combat the Gargoyles one-on-one. Dingo just went for the simple approach- Power Armour. Eventually, he split with The Pack entirely, and was developed farther in a nice Outback-based episode, where he tried to atone for his past misdeeds, and aided the World Tour Gang in stopping a computer intelligence from destroying Australia (and possibly the world), developing into a hero of his own. I kinda get a kick out of recognizing Jim Cummings' voice with Dingo, seeing as how he's been in every Disney project basically EVER (including being the singing voice for Scar & Rasputin during their respective Animated Epics' "Villain Songs".

-Dingo in his Power Armour is a pretty effective PL 8 kind of guy, having more interpersonal skills than his psychotic teammates, being quite strong, and being equally good in Melee & Ranged Combat. Oddly, he has very few Advantages, mainly because he had no real "specialty" in combat: Hyena was fast, Jackal was fast, and Wolf was big and strong. Dingo was kind of a bit of everything, so he can't manipulate his caps like the others can (aside from Power Attack. His Power Armour is a pretty weak version compared to others I've built, but then- this is the Gargoyle Universe, where a gang of guys with guns might actually be a threat to someone. It does the job, in any case, and lowers his defenses enough that he doesn't break PL 8 caps in it.

-With the boost from Matrix (a sentient nanotech colony), Dingo gains even more power, effectively duplicating his suit with some additional powers (Extra Limbs 2 in one instance), but we didn't see the most of it's capabilities. Matrix himself could basically use Weaken Toughness on a Continent-Wide Scale, so I don't know what Dingo was capable of with the boost.

-Wolf was the Strong Guy of The Pack (and the Dumb Guy, though Greg Weisman admits that he had too much fun with that, and Wolf was actually pretty clever in their debut), which of course didn't mean alot back in the day because he was only a really strong normal human, and Goliath, Hudson & Broadway were all stronger than him, and even Brooklyn could match him. The poor guy thus was super-happy to be turned into a malformed freak by Xanatos & Sevarius, which allowed him to whup Hudson and even match Goliath in terms of sheer strength! After that, The Pack sorta split ways, and he was last seen with Hakon, the Gargoyles' old Viking nemesis, spiritually guiding him and lecturing him and stuff. Kind of funny to see a pretty generic side-character turn into yet ANOTHER animal hybrid guy, then get the famed "Gargoyles Backstory Effect", where even the most minor background people end up with pages and pages of history and links to the rest of the cast.

-Wolf is a powerhouse, plain and simple. He's a grappling machine who's also pretty damn fast and scary, and he's one of the few villains who can match the top Gargoyles in terms of sheer physical strength. He's kind of a moron otherwise, though.

-Hakon's Axe is something he was only shown with once, so it's not in his 'main' build, but here it is below. It's your standard Axe (the damage pushing him to a PL 10 in his offensive caps- he pretty handily took on both Goliath AND Hudson combined), Alternate Power'd off of a powerful Line Blast effect, with the Flaw that he can only do it sometimes. The complications of having Hakon in charge of his unconscious body or whatever while doing it are a bit too complicated rules-wise to put down easily, so I just threw on that Flaw to make up the whole thing.

Motivation (Greed, Power)- Though he's greedy like the others, Wolf has an unnatural desire to prove himself, to the point where he underwent genetic engineering just so that he could fight Goliath one-on-one.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 90 / Defenses: 12 (193)

-When Hakon empowers Wolf, he becomes FREAKISHLY powerful, easily handling both Goliath & Hudson at once, and using uber-cheeseball tactics to win, like becoming immaterial, then rematerializing for a big punch. He also possessed Hudson temporarily, making HIM fight Goliath.

Re: Jab's Builds: The Pack- Jackal, Hyena, Fox, Dingo, Wolf

More episodes & notes-

"Vows": "Gargoyles Time Travel Syndrome" rears it's head for the first time, combining with "Gargoyles Backstory Syndrome" to reveal layers upon layers of people's origins and backstories. Xanatos & Fox get married, and drag Goliath, Demona & Xanatos' dad into the past to meet Young Goliath & Demona, and get The Illuminati to deliver some pricey coins to Xanatos in the future, to assure that he will be rich "as a self-made man". It still bothers me as to HOW he got the money in the FIRST PLACE if he'd never gotten the Phoenix Gate the first "step" around, but then, Time Travel stories are always bad for that. It IS pretty impressive to have David & Sirtis accurately play Goliath & Demona at younger ages by slightly modifying their voices. There's some nice character work here, too, as Xanatos' genuine arrogance plays off of his dad's disgust at how much his son cares for money, and how little respect he has for anything else.

"City of Stone": One of the BIGGEST mega-arcs of the series, which explains the huge backstory of Demona & Macbeth, as they meet up, ally, and change the course of Scottish history. It's brilliantly tragic, as everything is born of Demona's character flaws, and so man awful things happen as a result. I love that when Xanatos is alone in a city of frozen people, he still can't resist making little jokes to himself. THERE'S NOBODY THERE TO HEAR HIM BE SNARKY. Such a good character moment. The past storyline starts right out with Macbeth's father's best pal Bodhe being a weenie when the going gets tough and Findlaech dies. I enjoyed that character- usually The Advisor/Vizier character is a sinister traitor or just plain rude- here he's an overly-cautious weakling who always begs for peace instead of honorable fighting. On some points, he's actually a bit correct (he's the ultimate pragmatist with the path of least resistance in mind), which I like- it's not like he's being a wussy just to be a wuss. But still, he's a coward.

I love when Brooklyn gets all interrupt-y and Hudson's blind pal Robbins goes "Your friend is impatient!", and Hudson responds "The curse of youth." I love it when two wise old dudes just get to talking. Watching Demona gleefully walk through Manhattan smashing people to pieces with her mace and shoot their arms off is intensely disturbing. More stuff in the past reveals that Demona wasn't entirely bad after the betrayal at Wyvern- she saves Young Macbeth's life at great penalty to herself. I love the Weird Sisters and their description of the nature of vengeance- "vengeance begets nothing, but a vicious cycle of further vengeance." Gillecomgain (himself a real historical figure, and the true father of Macbeth's "son" as well) is quite the bad-ass, beating Macbeth easily, and almost finishing Demona. But his Jim Cummings-voiced ass goes flying off the castle in sick parallel to Findlaec.

Hee- some lady reveals that everyone's been turned to stone, and nobody believes her, despite everyone missing out on the previous night entirely. Past-Duncan proves to be a royal (literally) dick, betraying Macbeth even after the latter saves his life. Dang, Gruoch (least... attractive... name... ever) turned out pretty smokin'. Duncan gets a pretty horrific end given that this is a cartoon- his eyes go out and he gets set on fire. Demona's Clan seems to get exponentially bigger over time- only four are seen in a cave, five are up in the fight against Duncan, and then upwards of TWENTY silhouettes are seen against the third Hunter. Some poor wording and an overhearing Gargoyle ends up destroying Macbeth in future times (well, that and not killing a young child when he had the chance)- Weisman notes that for all we (and Demona) know, Macbeth was gonna shout at Bodhe for suggesting they betray the Gargoyles- instead, he says they have to consider all their options.

Defenses:
Dodge +7 (DC 17), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +10 (+3 Impervious), Fortitude --, Will +5

Complications:
Vulnerable (Electrical & Magnetic Attacks)
Involuntary Transformation (Metal Head)- Coyote 2.0 was really just a suit of armour around a floating robotic head- if his armour is cracked open, his "real" form is highly-vulnerable.

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 98 / Defenses: 11 (179)

-Coyote is pretty much the superheavyweight of "The Pack, Version 2.0", being a robotic Xanatos head controlling a super-powerful robot that leads the Fox-less mercenaries on various crime sprees. Not an overly interesting character (since he's basically Xanatos without most of the flair), but he's one of the more physically powerful villains the characters fight, and is thus quite scary.

-Coyote is fairly pricey given his, size, armour, flight & weapons capabilities. It usually takes either a bunch of the boys working together to bring him down, or Goliath himself going all-out to wreck his systems. Easily the most powerful Pack member, and usually one of the toughest villains of the series. His only weakness is that he's quite slow and easy to hit, being a big robot thing. As a robot, he of course can show up frequently with different types of powers, so feel free to go nuts on him.

-Coyote 1.0 was Strength 8 (he tore a BIG metal grate off it's hinges, which is well into the Spider-Man weight class of Strength), but no claws, and Human-Sized, able to fight equally with most Gargoyles. Coyote 2.0 (a big bad-ass Canine Robot) is mostly represented here, as is 3.0, who looked more Spider-y and inhuman. Coyote 4.0 was built from the Cauldron of Life, allowing him to easily-hold & de-power Children of Oberon (kind of a powerful Touch Affliction- Transformed to De-Powered). Some are little more than Devices with the "Xanatos Head" thing as a character, but it's simpler to just use the Coyote-bot as it's own character.

Despite my constant problems with 3E, I love these builds. Gargoyles is one of those shows that makes me hate TV executives. After two great seasons (yes I like World Tour, sue me), they killed the show with an awful final season and boxed 5 possible sequels... sad.

"World Tour" was still pretty good- "Gargoyles Mediocre" is still better than most shows ever get. I just thought it went on too long, and got a little generic after a point. I preferred the full cast to just three people and a dog.

Responsibility (Once & Future King)- Arthur is devoted to the safety of England, and he is supposed to be there to face her greatest threat.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 16 (131)

-King Arthur showed up in the "Avalon" arc of the show, and later arrived to team up with Goliath's British buddy Griff, where they went off on some adventure (Weisman says it was one of SIX potential spin-offs for the series... none of which ever got made). He was pretty typical as a character, but I found him rather dull (he was kind of just some big wise king dude... you get better stories either from the CREATION of such a character, or when other characters are at the forefront, and have to deal with him). For his build, I made him PL 10 like the elites of the Garg-verse (he defeated Macbeth in hand-to-hand, and Macbeth can take on the entire Clan at once), and have him some Knight-ly tricks of the trade. Plus Excalibur, though it didn't show any Magical properties in-show that I can recall.

Initiative +5

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +6, Fortitude +7, Will +7

Complications:
Involuntary Transformation (Stone By Day)- All Gargoyles are forced into a stone "hibernation" during the day- they will become unaware of their surroundings and immobile during this time, and are incredibly vulnerable. As a bonus, they appear to be harmless stone statues (which almost never go noticed by people as odd).
Obsession (Adventure)- Griff is more adventurous than the typical Gargoyle, and enjoys the idea of fighting Nazis and flying across the world.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 13 / Defenses: 14 (133)

-Griff is a rather sudden addition to the cast, coming out in the "World Tour" storyline, where we learn of the other Clans around the world. His Clan is the weirdest, most non-sensical of the bunch, since they all look like other animals (as varied as horses, birds, stags & lions) despite Gargoyles supposedly all being of the same scientific species (personally, I wish . His debut was a pretty good episode, though, as we get the standard "Headache of Time Travel" with Goliath using the Phoenix Gate to bring 1945 Battle of Britain Griff (the show loved it's history lessons) into the present day, where he made another appearance, eventually teaming up with King Arthur Pendragon for a potential spin-off series (that never happened, much like the SEVERAL other proposed spin-offs that Greg Weisman wanted to do). Now, I liked Gargoyles, but I never really got the sense that any of these spin-offs would've been really awesome- it's kinda for the best in a way, because the show had turned most of it's good villains into semi-good guys, and had run out of mythological stuff to do, so I can't really say that it didn't go out at it's peak. Better to end then, that make a bunch of weak secondary shows that failed to live up to the hype, y'know?

-Griff his a PL higher than your standard Gargoyles, and is nearly as good as Goliath & Demona, and considerably skilled as a solo hero. He could give Goliath a good fight, as is probably a better fighter than most of the other Clan-members.

This statement I can support. I liked world tour because it appealed my mythology nerd side (which is kind of a unavoidable development when your mother read you the Odyssey instead of fairy tales when you're a little kid).

I was never sure where "Gargoyle" fit in the scientific classification for what they were. I came to accept all the freaky clans as I moved the phrase further up the chart so it was less specific. Instead of it being akin to "human" or"rat" or "dog" I looked at the term the way I would "mammal" or "reptile."

DOCTOR ANTON SEVARIUS
Played By:
Tim Curry
Role: The Mad Scientist
PL 2 (46), PL 6 (46) Scientist
STRENGTH
0 STAMINA 0 AGILITY 0
FIGHTING 2 DEXTERITY 1
INTELLIGENCE 6 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE 2

Skills:
Deception 8 (+10)
Expertise (Science) 10 (+16)
Expertise (Criminal) 2 (+8)
Insight 2 (+3)
Perception 2 (+3)
Persuasion 1 (+3)
Technology 7 (+13)

Advantages:
Ranged Attack 2, Ultimate Science Skill

Offense:
Unarmed +2 (+1 Damage, DC 16)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +0 (DC 10), Parry +2 (DC 12), Toughness +0, Fortitude +1, Will +3

Complications:
Motivation (Science!)- Sevarius does a lot of stuff "just because". He's a true Mad Scientist, often experimenting and cheesing off the wrong people just for the sake of discovery.
Enemy (Goliath, Talon, Thailog)- Sevarius makes a lot of dangerous enemies- he mutated Talon against his will, pissed off Goliath, and created a true monster in Thailog, who tried to execute him.
Disabled (Cane)- Sevarius walks with a cane, and will be slowed considerably without it.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 3 (46)

-Anton Sevarius is the "Doctor Moreau" of the Gargoyles Universe, experimenting upon living subjects while working in secret for Xanatos. They faked the Good Doctor's death, then got to work on creating Clones and who knows what else? He was played rather hammily by Tim Curry (who, honestly, doesn't play many understated characters at all), and was kinda fun (this show seems to alternate between reserved, calm voice-acting like Hudson, Brooklyn, Goliath & Xanatos; and really scene-milking hammy stuff like Sevarius, The Pack, Demona & others), but he never really got the beating he deserved.
