Loving the Invincible builds Jab! I can't wait to see Battle Beast, as he's the only badguy in the book that seemed to be able to actually beat a Viltrumite.

-Black Samson's another of the 'super-powerful victims' line-up in Invincible, and he's actually had a few minor little subplots that get a panel here or there to explain them. He was a temporarily-depowered hero and prime suspect in the deaths of the Global Guardians at first, until it turned out it was his butler. He was sad... for a few panels. Then he started wearing a power-suit to give him a boost, but it got destroyed by the Battle Beast and he got knocked into a coma. Then he came back at way beyond normal power... but then went back to his normal power level. Nowadays, he's just another Global Guardian Flying Brick (though he can't actually FLY, per se), there to take some punches so that Invincible can fly in and look better. It's funny that so much backstory gets funnelled into guys we barely see, but that's kind of Kirkman's thing in that series.
-Samson loses points to most other comparable heroes because we see so little of him, but he's a standard Powerhouse with a Leaping specialty. He's a bit weaker, but a better fighter than most of them.

-Kid Omni-Man (aka Oliver) kinda showed up out of nowhere, in an arc where Mark met his father for the first time post-betrayal, where he'd made a new life for himself amongst a bunch of super-aging bug people. So kid brother Oliver is technically half-bug, but he looks just like a purple boy thanks to the strong Viltrumite genetics. I gotta admit, though, super-aging bug relations is about the most original way I've seen comic book writers get around the obvious problem of aging characters (most people use test-tube babies, like the Osborn/Stacey children). So Oliver came to live with Mark on Earth when the Viltrumites came and nearly wiped out the planet, where he aged quickly, attached himself to his foster mom and his tutor, and started developing his powers REALLY young. Unfortunately, he didn't grow up the way Mark did, and doesn't view human life as valuable. In one of his first appearances as a hero, he murdered BOTH Mauler Twins in seconds, then told Mark that life wasn't important and that he was an idiot. He temporarily aquiesed to his brother's wishes, but the look on his face showed that it was against his will. The future of this characters is VERY much up in the air, especially since he's still rapidly gaining in power, often by noticeable increments per day.
-Oliver Grayson is very much like his brother when he first started out by this point, packing similar physical Stats and Powers onto a smaller frame (I avoid Shriking mainly because it just fudges things up, and his Flight means his reach is never a factor). However, he lacks Mark's charisma or wisdom, much less his Skills. He is very intelligent, though, just not packing any Skills onto that genius just yet. Importantly, though, Oliver possesses All-Out Attack & Power Attack, making him a little more dangerous than Inexperienced Invincible was, which allows him to do things like blow a Mauler Twin's brain out the top of his head with an uppercut (!!).

-Magnattack's another one-shot villain with a pretty unique power- he uses control over metals to form a suit of floating plates around his body, allowing him to shoot them out at high speeds and protect himself. Pretty much nothing else is known about him, aside from the fact that Mark could house him within three seconds.
-Magnattack's power is pretty easy to figure out once you put down what it actually is- just a Device that's useable only by him. I figure he could probably also control regular metals as well, not just his own suit. His Power Loss comes from the fact that he actually has to shoot out his own protective plates, meaning he'd run out eventually- he just needs a round of resting or otherwise not doing anything to recover his lost plates, and he's good to go again. He can put himself entirely within his own plate-field to become Impervious, but he can't move much inside it if that's the case.

Ohh. I'm sad I missed so much of Invincible. Magnattack is highly reminiscent of my boy Mace, in that he's a magnetic controller who utilizes his costume as a weapon.

I'm a little torn regarding Invincible - I'm not particularly fond of the massive carnage in the book and I cordially detest his new suit, but he continues to interest me as a character.

-The Reanimen are a recurring subplot in "Invincible", being a large number of high-powered Cyber-Zombies created by an evil college scientist. Mark & his friend William's buddy Rick Sheridan (no relation to Sleepwalker... and seriously, that is one OBSCURE reference for a gag name) ends up being the first LIVING Reaniman, much to everyone's horror, though this being Kirkman writing, it takes like TWELVE ISSUES or something for them to finally realize what happened to their vanished friend (in the high octane world of "Invincible", new threats and fights arise daily), and he gets turned back... kinda. Rick ends up stuck with mechanical parts in a human-like body, which brings him additional stress. The Reanimen project ends up being renewed by Cecil Stedman and his Dark Government Faction, which is the straw that broke the camel's back between him & Mark, finally ending their working relationship once and for all, and shaking up the status quo in the books permanently.
-Reanimen are among the most powerful Minions around, being PL 7 monsters who are powerful and immune to all but high-strength attacks. Invincible and similarly-powered guys can make mincemeat out of them in groups, but there are often twenty or THIRTY of the guys around, which can dogpile quickly.

I'm not too big a fan of the gore, either. I mean, I LIKE realistic showings of violence in books (Black Adam in JSA is a good example, how he'd kill people realistically with his sheer strength). It shows that not everyone's superhumanly tough with comic-book physics (in real life, somone who could lift 50 tons would DETONATE a human being like a potato in the microwave). But nearly every issue for like the past ten has featured either Mark or someone else being blown open, internal organs flying everywhere, and explosive blood spurts in dramatic fashion. It's COOL when done occasionally (Allan the Alien at the hands of the Viltrumites early on is a great example), because it gives some 'oomph' and gravitas to a scene. But EVERY ISSUE and it loses it's appeal, making it look like a parody of Image books from the 90s.... which Kirkman admits he was a huge fan of.

Which brings me to another random point- the fact that writers tend to reflexively ape or draw inspiration from the comics they read as a youth. Guys like Claremont & Byrne & Perez read the books of the 60s, and so bring a Stan Lee-like dramatic angsty element to their books (often to a huge degree- see the Teen Titans & X-Men of the 80s), guys from the 90s read lots of 80s stuff from Frank Miller & Alan Moore (back when they were the only two guys doing it), so everything was grim, gritty and violent in that decade. And now we've got Kirkman and others who grew up reading the comics WE did (by 'we' I mean people in their twenties), which means that they'll take the 'realism', the violence, and the government-controlled subplots, and take THOSE to new levels. Just read OMAC, Invincible, Civil War, Dark Reign, etc. and you'll see TONS of examples of evil governments runnings things, heroes and villains dying in fights they would've survived in every other decade, blood, and semi-realistic attempts at explaining things.

-Furnace is another throw-away Invincible villain, which is too bad, since a character like this has potential. A fire-based guy who nonetheless wears a suit of super-powered armour, he has a pretty decent look, but spends most of his time complaining when Invincible blows up his armour with one punch. And he's very similar to Magmaniac, really.
-Furnace is a bit tough, because he's got TWO power-sets. The suit's hard to figure out, since it technically extinguishes his Magma Aura (he can't use it in the armour at all), boosts his Strength, gives him Growth, AND helps him aim his otherwise poor Blasts.

Maybe he has the armor to interact with the environment without setting fire to everything in sight. Or did his Aura extinguish when he was knocked out?

I don't think his Aura ever went out- it may have been permanent. But he was such a minor character that it was never shown, so either way is possible. Building side Invincible characters can be like building Astro City guys- it's purpose is not to explain every little ability someone has, it's just to show the trials of the main character.

-The Immortal is one of the biggest supporting characters in Invincible, but is one of the biggest antagonists as well. Portrayed as an immortal, ageless yes-man to the government, ol' Immortal is kind of a jerk-ass at heart, ripping on Invincible whenever possible, ignoring his teammates' feelings and wishes (earning their enmity as a result), and thinking he's way tougher than he really is. He's been humiliated several times by Mark, being either one-upped, or easily killed by an Alternate Invincible, and it's generally another way we see bloody mayhem in the books, because they can just bring him back from the dead.
-The Immortal is rare for the Invincible Universe in that we've actually seen enough from him to give serviceable stats, so much so that he goes OVER his points cost. In actuality, his 'in-battle' Regeneration has never actually been shown- it's always post battle stuff where he's all stiched together and heals quickly, but it seems likely that he has at least a little bit of the non-Resurrection Regen. powers in him.

-Darkwing is the former kid sidekick of the original, but has gone insane from the permanent darkness that Midnight City is forced under in the Invincible Universe. Now a grim, murderous vigilante who hunts down and kills the criminals of that trapped city, he was brought in by Invincible, only to be sprung by Cecil and put onto the Global Guardians. He hasn't been seen too often aside from his debut issue and the Invincible War (where he saved the day by teleporting at least one Invincible into the Shadowverse- though neither were seen again after that).
-Darkwing is tough to stat, since he's a mini-Batman with a bunch of Skills & Feats, but also a Teleportation power that he can use to attack people with. He can also see into the real world via the Shadowverse, giving him a relatively complex set-up of Teleport & Dimensional Movement with the Attack Extra and a few handy combat-based Feats. So he's a PL 9 guy who's pretty good at just about everything, with another gimmick.

-Rex is one of the better supporting cast members in the Invincible book, being initially written as a pure jerkass boyfriend of Atom Eve, meant to obviously 'get in the way' of the "obvious" Eve/Mark hook-up that fans were predicting since Issue #1. He cheated on her with Dupli-Kate, but got the same treatment by The Immortal, and once we'd learned his past (a penniless family gave up their only son to the government for experimentation, and got rich for it), he became a bit more understandable. This was aided by him performing several heroic acts, cheering on Mark/Eve once they'd finally hooked up, and surviving a brutal amount of damage from The Lizard League, a battle that "killed" Shrinking Ray & Dupli-Kate (Kate's since returned, but Ray's supposedly been 'digested' by Komodo Dragon). But alas, it appears he was the most Heroic Sacrifice of the "War of 16 Invincibles", as he charged HIS OWN SKELETON with his power, causing a massive explosion that killed one of the Evil Marks, and himself, in one of that issue's more spectacular moments.
-Rex surprisingly doesn't come near his points cost in terms of PL, mainly due to being a background character who isn't shown with lots of Skills or Feats. His Blast power, while insanely powerful at times, is dependent on Power Attack to do excessive damage, and has two big Limits placed on it (he can only throw objects he's charged, not Blast at full distance). He's been established at peak-human strength (though it hasn't SHOWN him doing that- it's in his bio and his official origin), and is quite durable.

-Robot's one of the bigger recurring characters in Invincible, starting out as an actual robot controlled from afar by the psychic impulses of a mutated, deformed fetus-like teenager. This grossness led to the creation of a cloned body due to the help of the Mauler Twins, which led to the modern incarnation of "Robot"- now a 12-year old boy in a robotic harness suit like Iron Man. All in all, he's a mere generic powerhouse, but his skillset (the resident tech-genius of the superheroes), and his status as a more caring leader than the JerkAss Immortal, give him alot of well-roundedness, which is appreciated in this series.
-Robot is a standard PC PL 9 (135), given tons of Skills & smarts, but he's more of a generic attacker in the field, dependent on his strength & toughness to win the day. He's much better off giving orders and helping out on the science-end, altogether.
