-In terms of raw power, Magma is the most powerful New Mutant by a ways (except for a certain pacifistic robot); I'm probably even short-changing her here to make her 'playable' with the rest of the team. She's interesting in that she got a huge push in the New Mutants' first big 'out of mansion adventure' (in a LONG series of them), was a big factor at first, but then slowly disappeared to the background of the book in favor of the other characters. Largely this is thanks to major focus coming in on Magik & Warlock, then Cypher, and Kitty's eventual major place in the book, to the point where she got shoved aside much like Karma did. This eventually led to her leaving the team and joining the Hellions on friendly terms, hooking up with Empath, who finally started showing a somewhat better side.
-The Nova Roma concept was pretty cool, though once again represents the "great white hype" nature of comics, where even in freaking Brazil, the coolest culture around is a bunch of white people from Europe :). This is in spite of one of the most asinine random decisions in comics history (and that's saying something), where out of nowhere it was revealed that Selene made up the whole Nova Roma thing, and all it's denizens were actually British people brainwashed by her & Empath's power. This was, of course, retarded on so many levels that they casually hand-waved it off years later, but MAN was that dumb. Not even in an important story! They just wiped it's history from comics for NO REASON. This of course shows further the way that writers in general forgot about or disrespected the Amara character. Hell, even to this day, you'll see her pop up now and then (the crucifixion on the Mansion lawn), but even in books that were MADE for appearances of her (X-Force, New Mutants/X-Men second run), she'll only be there for about two or three issues, before disappearing again. I guess nobody has any good plans for her.
-The big question here is her Earthquake power, which she's been shown using several times outside of her Magma Form. The answer: Complications! Essentially, she usually only does it when it's out of her control, thus it gets to be a GM caviat to give her Hero Points or cause some other problems. The rest of the time, though, the player's stuck using it in her Magma Form.

-I don't think there's a character that Chris Claremont tried to make into more of an unlikeable prick than Manuel de la Rocha. Cripes, even Professor X explicitly said he was the embodiment of pure evil in one of his Xavier Journals (though Claremont may've been embellishing there...). But the fact is, the guy gleefully played with Roulette's emotions, even though she liked him for real, he tried to get Firestar to fall in love with him, he manipulated Magneto into giving up the New Mutants to Emma Frost, and (his worst offense ever) forced the X-Mansion workers Tom & Sharon into falling into lust with each other, forcing them to disappear for months in a wild frenzy that left them both emotionally broken and drained, scarred for life. All of this with a smile. This led to an awesome New Mutants scene, in which the gang captured him, threw him into Limbo, and basically emotionally tortured him for like ten minutes, only giving up when they realized how dirty revenge actually made them feel. And how did the Hellions get revenge? They didn't; they agreed Manuel deserved it, and then Thunderbird punched him in the face for good measure. Now THAT's a hate-able prick.
-Statting him is essentially focusing entirely on his one trick, which makes him a PL 9 in spite of his fairly weak stats elsewhere. His Emotion Control could realistically be depicted as anywhere from +6 to +15 based off of varying appearances (manipulating Magneto could NOT have been easy), but I chose a middle-ground effect. It lets him command one person with great power, two people with slightly lesser power, or a mass effect on a large group at minor power levels, for those low-PL crowds. I AP'd it because it made more sense that way (I couldn't gave it a greater Split Attack, but felt it would be too weak at that point to be worth trying to manipulate 10 people), giving it a lower general power level, but a greater effect range. I know he has Distracting as a Flaw (he nearly always gets KO'd while failing to manipulate someone), but there's a question as to whether or not somebody has to look into his eyes (he often actually SAYS "look into my eyes"), but I think he can do whole crowds, and he zapped Magneto from afar, so it's unlikely.

you'd actually want side-effectinstead of distracting, since that covers "bad stuff if you don't pull it off"

No, no, he didn't get punched as a result of his mind control not working, he'd get punched because somebody would nail him while he's trying to make his power work. Basically, he can't move and make it work at the same time. Like when he tried to Emo-control one of the New Mutants (forget which one), and they resisted it, and just knocked his ass out for it, while he's all "look into my eyes, and feel LOVE for me!"

-And here we have Warlock, by FAR the most powerful New Mutant, and potentially one of the most powerful beings on Earth. But he was a pacifist who was terrified of his own power, and completely naiive in the ways of the world. This made him a pretty fascinating character study in the days before the "Robot that thinks it's people" concept became DONE TO DEATH in comics, and his friendship with Doug brought some of the lighter moments in the series. This led to the monster showdown and the New Mutants' finest hour, as they fought Warlock's godlike, star-eating father, The Magus, and with the Professor's aid, killed him. Sadly, it was all downhill for the book from there, as Cypher was killed in the late 50s (though that led to some painfully good scenes where Warlock tries in vain to reanimate Doug's body), and Warlock just kicked around with NOTHING to do (seriously, he did JACK ALL) until he was finally killed off in the X-Tinction Agenda storyline, almost as an afterthought. Recent years have brought him back, but in that half-assed ass-backwards way that comics falls into all the time (ie. they brought him back, but oh it WASN'T actually him & Doug brought back as one being, until later when we found out it actually WAS, thus he was deflated for no reason at all; see similar examples in Jason Todd coming back after being a false lead in another story, and bringing in a Supergirl for years, then replacing her with the Kara Zor-El Supergirl).
-Statting him wasn't easy. He obviously doesn't fit the rest of the team in terms of power level, nor is he meant to. But he's nowhere near their level in combat (he doesn't like to fight, and is rather dumb about what he does sometimes), and usually has to take their lead to do stuff. But at the same point, he can take almost ANY form imaginable, requiring points in both Morph AND Variable Power (for when he decides to turn into a space vehicle or a submarine or some crap... this happens nearly every story), as well as Growth and Elongation. He can heal himself from damage using others' life energy, and has tons of sensors out there to analyze everything. And THEN there's the whole Transmode Virus thing, which I basically shunted into a "Transform" effect. This is basically the kiss of death for an evil character, but the good Warlock would only do it to food or (initially) birds and stuff. But he's done it to huge dragons at points too, so it's power level could be variable. But it's strongly implied that Warlock could end any fight in about five seconds if he so chose, just by snapping out tendrils and turning everyone into machines and then eating them. Good thing he's always been on our side.

Chun-Li was one of the four major protagonists of the movie, and as such, ate up a ton of screen time, though she only ever got to be in one fight. But WHAT a fight, though.... Though she's got alot of standard SF-build things, she's tough to fit into a 150 pp build thanks to all her special agent training, as she has to be reasonably skilled at her job (and not just relying on the Beginner's/Jack combo). Much like Cammy & Vega, she's a Dexmonkey with varying hit-power, capable of boosting her damage or hitting with even greater accuracy than normal, which makes her a dangerous melee fighter. Her Fireball is far from idealized, but that's about normal for what she's shown in the games anyways.

For some unexplainable reason, Magma was always my favorite of the old school New Mutants. That is one nice Magma build you got there! 8)

Nah, Distracting is more in tune with the flavour of the power, but both could probably fit. I'll stick with just the one, though, or else he's got some serious limitations :). When I think about it, just because I've never seen Manuel running around while using his powers doesn't mean he couldn't, and it's never been explicitly stated, just implied, that his concentration was messed up while using them.

That's the thing with M&M, there's gotta be like 17 different ways to do everything. I could give him Flaw- Requires Concentration Check or something too.

-Just had to round-out the book's roster. Lila was a frequent guest star, used to tie the book into most of the 80s trends, and what's more 80s than intergalactic rock stars who also are super-thieves? Lila's whole gimmick is centred around her 80s-style punk-rock singing, and Teleporting. And WHAT a Teleport; capable of crossing interstellar distances in seconds, and with multiple people. Her only limits are the fact that she can only zap to places she's visited before, and that she can ONLY teleport vast distances. She can go to Alpha Centauri, THEN the place on Earth she needs to go, though. The Familiar Places limit is slightly better than Anchor for Flaws on this power, but I figured with the Long Range Flaw, it evens out. Note also that she can Teleport targets unwillingly, but only at +8, or else she'd be PL 20.
-She doesn't have a whole bunch of Thief skills, since her talents focus much more on just 'porting in and out unseen.
-Was it me, or was her & Sam's whole relationship completely awesome? The intergalactic rock star/thief has a thing for the innocent mama's boy Sam Guthrie, who's as much scared of her as he is in love with her. And then there's poor Sunspot, left freaking out because his charm didn't give him what he wanted for once. Unfortunately, such a thing was not fated to outlive the 1980s, and Sam was quickly pushed together with 80s mall-girl Boom-Boom instead, since Lila was missing in space somewhere.

Excellent build of Warlock. And gotta love Lila!

I believe Warlock's transmode virus, doesn't it work on plants too? I first got into comics with the New Mutants. And i was sure i saw that happen once. So perhaps it should be, Transform Organic Matter to Transmode? .

Any chance you will build Gossamyr?! Even though she only lasted for like two issues or so..

Hm, not a big fan of the Simonson years (or that particular little arc), but her power-set was actually pretty interesting, even if the character vanished. I'll stat her up when I get a chance.

Hm, I'd normally count plants as "living creatures", but "organics" is probably better and more all-emcompassing, so yeah, I'll switch it around.

I'd post my other thoughts on the series, but I already did that on another forum. Check this uber-long rant of mind out (added to every time I read more issues):

Figured I'd stat up the Marauders next, just to continue with the X-related builds. And the worst is first, Prism, the guy so lame they had Marvel Girl accidentally kill him by tossing him into a wall. Of course, he's still PL 9, but ONLY defensively, as his Absorption power makes him almost immune to Energy attacks, period. Hell, he could almost get Aborption 12, but that's a little over-the-top. Since his crystalline form essentially makes him a Construct, he gets the dropped Con and added Immunity tossed in, which makes his powers VERY expensive. Matter-of-fact, if he wasn't so weak in every other category, he'd be a deadly opponent. As such, he really sucks, and is the team's weakest link. But don't cry for the Marauders, they get alot better as we go on.

-Scrambler, like Prism, is a guy with few skills and a one-note power. But HIS one-note power is devastatingly effective, able to nullify someone's entire power set, or cause horrendous physical damage with a touch. Though he didn't get to use it against the X-Men very well in the initial fight (Storm didn't have any powers, and he & Rogue KO'd each other in one of those feedback loop things), he killed quite a few Morlocks simply by removing their abilities.
