-Aminedi ("The Invisible One"), a naked, red, skull-faced mutant, debuted along with the rest of Desert Sword, and was the scariest/most versatile member of the team, packing the ever-cheap "GMs: never let your players use this set" powers of Invisibility, Intangibility AND a horrifically-damaging effect all at the same time! Using his powers, he managed to slice Super Sabre's head off (getting rid of that hideous costume design once and for all), and even CUT THE BLOB, which seemed like a pretty good bad-ass push... until Avalance just wrapped him in some stone and ran off, and that was it for him. He never even appeared in comics again (which feels like a waste, as he was rather original), instead contracting the Legacy Virus and dying off-panel, in the days when the Virus was used to wipe out unpopular or unnecessary characters.

-Aminedi's rather powerful (Affects Corporeal Strike + Insubstantial), and could be a major heavy-hitter with some better stats, but as he was, he was just a minor character who appeared once. His Strike cut The Blob, but not horribly or fatally or anything (Power Attack plus Extra Effort, I guess), and he was oddly trapped by some rocks via Avalanche, despite seemingly being able to turn into wind. The way I see it, his powers are Linked- he couldn't escape into Cutting Wind form without slashing teammate Sirocco apart, so he had to just muscle out of the trap instead. Otherwise, it's just be poor writing, and we know it couldn't be that, right :)?

-The Black Raazer came about in a weird way. Initially, Eugene "Puck" Judd of Alpha Flight was written by John Byrne as being in constant pain- this was meant to be a symptom of his condition (ie. being a dwarf/little person). However, he failed to properly explain this, so the next Alpha writer, Bill Mantlo, wrote his 'pain' as being POSSESSED BY A DEMON THAT MADE HIM SHORT- the Black Raazer, some Persian super-sorceror. So Puck now had this ultra-convoluted backstory and was now kinda super-human when he was originally just acrobatic and small, and Raazer got to show up, threaten the team, but get beaten down. He actually appeared in Desert Sword for that one arc (because Persians/Iranians ALWAYS love working with Iraqis/Arabs, don't you know), before being totally forgotten about again.

-Your everyday wraith/ghost/sorceror lord/sword guy, Raazer's an expensive, team-threatening bugger with a HORRIBLY cheap assortment of powers (Insubstantial is AWFUL on Magic-guys, especially those with mental powers), Super-Strength, Invisibility, high toughness, and a devastating sword that can Drain AND cut people as powerful as The Blob at the same time (though Blobby kinda just had the pig-sticker stuck in 'im for a bit before angrily pulling it out and impaling Raazer on it). His mere existence on Desert Sword kinda made all the others seem redundant, but he seemed rather depowered there, only KINDA threatening Freedom Force.

-The Griffin looks pretty cool, and seems like a heavy-hitter (able to brawl with Wonder Man and Namor), but he's a pretty minor recurring villain over the years, and prone to frequent mutations that the next writer forgets about, so sometimes he looks like a lion, other time a humanoid, and he sometimes can control birds or is unable to speak- the writers don't really keep track of him too well. Kind of a waste, really, as someone with this power-set could actually threaten a lot of people if he ever was used properly. Instead, it seems he's just a minion of The Hood, and only attacks in groups.

-A fairly powerful, under-pointed PL 10, The Griffin can brawl it out with just about anybody for a while, can Fly, and even Control Birds a little bit. He's basically Thing-strong, as I think Namor's stated they were physical equals (on-land), and should be at least Large in size, since Namor used to have him as an animalistic mounted beast (in his more Leonine phase).

As far as minor villains go, they don't get much better than the Griffin. Maybe, y'know so the next incarnation of the Thunderbolts won't suck so much, they'll put Griffin and Dragon Man (another D-list fave) on the team. Or maybe they'll just go for more imbecilic "I used to be Speedball, but fun characters aren't allowed anymore, so they turned me into a generic angst ridden, whiny guy" crap. Sorry about that last part.

Keep 'em comin' Jab.

-I find The Gargoyle interesting. Mainly it's because I've NEVER seen or read an appearance by him in a comic- I just picked up one of those old "Official Handbooks of the Marvel Universe" thingies and saw him in it. Turns out, he's one of The Defenders (ie. that jobber group of jobber groups, once it's most famous members left), an old man who sold his soul to some demons so his dying hometown could be prosperous again. Seeing the error of his ways, he turned on them, and allied with The Defenders for a fair bit of time, going through the usual things that inhuman characters go through (he can't switch to human form! Then he can! Then he can't again, and his human form dies!), and finally settled as an aging trainer for the Initiative before retiring. Wow, a RETIRED HERO. We're unlikely to see him again, unless one of those weird modern writers of comics decides to 'save' the character and make him the 'grizzled veteran' character of a D-League hero team (like the Agents of Atlas or Champions or something).

-An interesting batch of powers- he's a standard PL 8 brawler in melee, with some solid strength and durability. He can Fly, but REALLY slowly, and Regenerate lost limbs over some time. But his whole "Bio-Mystical" energy thing is a fascinating batch of APs you don't normally see- he can Fatigue people (I only discovered that power last week while skimming stuff- so few heroes use it- instead going for Stun!) or just Drain Strength (both effects are KINDA similar in terms of description, so I stuck it both), Blast with a fairly powerful burst of energy, produce a shield against Magic (I used Half-Immunity since otherwise it REALLY screws up his PL caps), and even cast Fear onto others. So he's a fairly versatile, expensive PL 9 (140) hero who has several options that effect multiple saves in combat, which makes him really effective for his Power Level.

-Volcana's a character that debuted in Secret Wars (alongside Spider-Woman II & Titania), but unlike the others, she never really stuck around as a major character. In fact, I'd never even heard of the character until I went on my first mass-purchase of old "classic" TPBs, and saw her in it. It's rather sad, because I kinda liked this character. Instead of your usual bodacious, arrogant babe, you had a weak-willed, mousy girl who was always nervous (ie. dork bait), hooking up with the nerdiest, skinniest guy around (again, dork bait), and she was a classic case of a "Villain who was secretly good". They could've gone places with this, but instead Marvel jerked Molecule Man between life & death a few times, Marsha broke up with him, and we never really saw much of her again.

-Her body just makes me laugh, though. Her own shyness, and comments from other characters, imply that she's supposed to be somewhat overweight. The artist clearly tried to 'show' this... by giving her huge breasts and super-wide hips, but giving her an identical waistline to all the other women. So instead of a slightly chubby girl, we have a super-tall Amazon with INCREDIBLE proportions, along with a perfect exaggerated hourglass figure. Yeah... that's not exactly what a "chubby girl" looks like in real life.

-Volcana's a fun little Alternate Form build. Her basic, most common form is her basic Magma Form, allowing her to be a Blaster-type with a really powerful Energy Aura. Two other Alternate Forms allow her to choke people or block their vision (Ash Form), or just be a PL 9 super-strong Brick (Basalt Form). She's far better off just sticking to her best power, though- a +11 Penetrating Line Blast is nothing to sneeze at.

NIce work Jab, now I don't want to be a nitpicker (which I am) but, as far as I know, Volcana was never able to fly in her magma form. Plus I think that being the best friend of Titania also counts as a complication, even if the authors never exploited that connection after Secret War.

Huh, I could've sworn I saw her flying about in Secret Wars, but flipping through that TPB again, I can see that she didn't. Must've been projecting some Torch/DC's Volcana stuff onto her and assumed she could. Fixing...

And I don't think her relationship with Titania counts for much anymore- they pretty much stopped hanging out DURING their first storyline in Secret Wars.

I always liked Volcana. She was one of my favorites (she was around in Secret Wars II, and popped up in a few small walk-on roles later).

I'm also not sure, but I think a little bit of Growth made Volcana taller, which tended to fix her proportions to cuddly goodness instead of shy, chubby gal.

Why can't they get someone like Jaime Rodriguez or Terry Moore to design a few super-chicks with love handles. The LA heroine of Love and Rockets was flat out gorgeous.

Or maybe find the artist who did the Abandonned - Ross Campbell. Rylie was a cutie.

Persoally, I think all these comic artists believe they have to try to "out zaftig" Cleavage G...I mean POWER Girl. Volcana is a character with some potential that is forever stunted, because the writers that manage to remember her, can't get past the "she was created as a girlfriend for Molecule Man" albatross that Jim Shooter hung on her.

Nice job on her and Gargoyle though.

HAND NINJAS

Hand Ninjas are such an iconic minion in the Marvel Universe, it's no shock that they go down in droves to every single hero out there. Despite this, they're SUPPOSED to be elite fighters, so I constructed a Ninja for every possible Power Level between 4 and 8! These Minions are fairly capable- every one makes their PL caps and fills out all the points necessary for PC-level heroes. But the vast majority of the time, Hand Ninjas are PL 4 or 5.

-These are the raw, high-powered elites- guys tough enough to give even Daredevil or Elektra pause for a while, and only encountered one at a time. To face more than one of these is truly rare, and the sign it's REALLY hit the fan.
