#315 Warhammer 40,000: Ibram Gaunt

Postby Woodclaw » Mon Dec 13, 2010 6:50 am

At the moment I'm a bit blocked with Dresden Files, so I'm reading the Gaunt's Ghost for a change of pace.

Image
MEN OF TANITH! DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?

Commissar-Colonel Ibram Gaunt

Power Level: 8 (148pp)

Abilities: STR: 18 (+4), DEX: 16 (+3), CON: 18 (+4), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 18 (+4), CHA: 18 (+4)

Skills: Bluff 4 (+8), Climb 3 (+7), Computers 2 (+4), Diplomacy 5 (+9), Disable Device 3 (+5), Drive 3 (+6), Intimidate 7 (+11), Knowledge (current events) 7 (+9), Knowledge (history) 7 (+9), Knowledge (tactics) 8 (+10), Knowledge (theology & philsophy) 7 (+9), Language 4 (High Gothic, Jantine Battle-Chant, Hyrkan Battle-Chant, Tanith Battle-Chant; Native: Low Gothic [Manzipor dialect]), Medicine 1 (+5), Notice 3 (+7), Search 5 (+7), Sense Motive 5 (+9/+13), Stealth 4 (+7), Survival 3 (+7), Swim 3 (+7)

Feats: Assessment, Benefit 1 (Law Enforcement: Commissar), Benefit 5 (military rank: Colonel), Dedication (to the First and Only), Defensive Attack, Defensive Strike, Diehard, Dodge Focus 2, Equipment 5, Fearsome Presence 4, Improved Defense 2, Inspire 3/4, Leadership, Luck 1, Power Attack, Rousing Speech 1 (Intimidate, Attack Rolls), Skill Mastery 1 (Diplomacy, Intimidate, Knowledge [tactics], Sense Motive), Withstand Damage

Powers:

Powerblade of Heironymo Sondar (Device 3 [easy to lose]; 9pp)

Devices:

Powerblade of Heironymo Sondar (15pp of effects)
- Strike 3 (PF: Mighty, Improved Critical 3)
- Power Field (adds Penetrating [7 ranks] and Lethal Only to the sword attacks)
- Holy Relic (Enhanced Feats 1 [Inspire 1])

Equipment: Binoculars (1ep), Micro-bead (as Commlink plus Subtle 1 [military scrambler]; 2ep), Tanith Camo-cloak (as Camo Clothing plus Variable Descriptor [any terrain]; 2ep), Guard Flak Armor (Protection 3; 3ep)

Weapons (array; 13ep)
- Bolt Pistol (+6 ballistic and explosive damage; crit 19; 40'; Full Power, Lethal Only)
- Straight Silver [combat knife] (+2 slashing or piercing damage; crit 19; 10' [thrown]; Masterwork)
- Tube Charges (+6 explosive damage; crit 20; 20' [thrown]; Area [explosion, targeted, 4 ranks only], Full Power, Lethal Only)

4ep in mission specific equipment

Combat: Attack +9; Damage +3 (unarmed), or by weapon of choice; Defense +9 (+4 Flat-footed); Initiative +3

Saves: Toughness +7/+4 without armor, Fortitude +7, Reflex +6, Will +8/+12 [Dedication]

Abilities 42 + Skills 21 (84 ranks) + Feats 34 + Powers 9 + Combat 32 + Saves 10 + Drawbacks 0 = 148

Complications:
  • Enemies (tons): Gaunt's temper and unconventional leadership - not to mention willingness to stand up for his soldiers no matter what - have won him tons of bitter enemies and faithful allies among his fellow Imperial Guard's commanders
  • Guilt (the death of Tanith): when the Chaos arrived to Tanith Gaunt choose to retreat instead of fighting, something that still haunt his dreams
  • Honor: Gaunt is a very honorable man, even too much for his own good
  • Reputation (soft and unconventional): Gaunt is very unconvtional both as a commissar and as a Imperial Guard commander, many think that this made him unfit for either of his roles
  • Responsibility (Brin Milo): until he departed at the end of the Saint arc, Gaunt considered Brin Milo - the piper trooper of the Tanith - as sort of surrogate son
  • Responsibility (to the Taniths): due to his sense of guilt Gaunt has taken his role as Taniths' commanding officier much closer to the heart than usual

 the commissar, the colonel, the legend. Gaunt is - for me at least - the most iconic character of the 40k universe, not to mention the redemeer of the whole Imperial Guard. Before Dan Abnett wrote his famous books the poor guardsmen were the joke of the 40k universe

 Gaunt himself is a bit of an anomaly, for a commissar he's unusually forgiving, but given his peculiar background this is amply justified

 Gaunt by himself isn't superhumanly powerful while acting as part of a team he became a real terror being able inspire his men to untold heights of heroism

 while the Powerblade of Heironymo Sondar isn't a device by technology, its status as a relic of the Imperium make it so. For an earlier version of Gaunt remove the powerblade and add a chainsword (which is a piece of equipment)

Chainsword (+3 tearing damage; crit 19; Mighty, Autofire 1 [7 ranks]; 12ep)

/me salutes.

Although, I think that you might mean before Abnett wrote his books. He's pretty much singlehandedly the reason why they rewrote the Imperial Guard rulebook from a tabletop full of cannon-fodder to a smaller, extremely skilled fighting force full of incredible soldiers.

DOH... thanks for the catch I was half asleep when I wrote those notes.

Usuallly I don't have this kind of problems, having a reminder helps me not doing the same mistake again, but if you prefer be my guest.
Actually I'm dyslexic, so this kind of problems are quite common for me.

By the way if you have any request feel free to submit it.

Well, since you asked, is there any chance of you writing up Lady Sybil Ramkin, Sergeant Angua Von Uberwald or Captain Carrot Ironfounderson, to go with your Vimes?

Angua and Carrott were laready in my to-do list along with Nobby, Colon and someother Watch officiers, I admit I didn't thought about Lady Ramkin, but I think I can build her as well.

Thank you. I always thought Lady Ramkin would make a good supporting character/love interest for a PC. The woman handles miniature exploding Dragons for a hobby, after all, so she's not exactly a Damsel In Distress.

#316 Discworld: Carrot Ironfoundersson

Postby Woodclaw » Thu Dec 16, 2010 4:12 pm

Image
It was Carrot who'd suggested to the Patrician that hardened criminals should be given the chance to 'serve the community' by redecorating the homes of the elderly, lending a new terror to old age and, given Ankh-Morpork's crime rate, leading to at least one old lady having her front room wallpapered so many times in six months that now she could only get into it sideways.

Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson

Power Level: 7* (108pp)

Abilities: STR: 18 (+4), DEX: 14 (+2), CON: 18 (+4), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 16 (+3), CHA: 20 (+5)

Skills: Climb 2 (+6), Diplomacy 3 (+8/+12 [in Ankh-Morpork]), Gather Information 3 (+8/+12 [in Ankh-Morpork]), Handle Animal 1 (+6), Intimidate 2 (+7/+11 [in Ankh-Morpork]), Investigate 3 (+5), Knowledge (civics) 4 (+6), Knowledge (current events) 5 (+7), Knowledge (history) 3 (+5), Knowledge (streetwise) 4 (+6), Language 3 (City dwarvish, Morporkian, a bit of Klatchian; Native: Dwarven), Notice 3 (+6), Profession (miner) 2 (+5), Profession (watchman) 5 (+8), Search 3 (+5), Sense Motive 5 (+8), Stealth 3 (+5), Swim 2 (+6)

Feats: Accurate Attack, Attack Focus 1 (melee), Benefit 1 (Dwarf by adoption), Benefit 3 (rank: Captain of the Watch), Connected, Contacts, Cult Hero 1 (Ankh-Morpork), Eidetic Memory, Environmental Adaptation 1 (underground), Equipment 3, Favored Conditions 2 (Right makes Might), Inspire 3, Lionheart 1, Luck 1, Skill Mastery 1 (Diplomacy, Gather Information, Intimidate, Knowledge [current events]), Ultimate Diplomacy

Powers:

The Sword (Device 2 [easy to lose]; 6pp)

Devices:

The Sword (9pp of effects)
- Strike 3 (PF: Mighty, Improved Critical 2; Extra: Penetrating [3 ranks])

Equipment: Lantern (1ep), Breastplate and Leathers (Protection 3; 3ep)

Copper's arsenal (Array; 10ep)
- Crossbow (+4 piecing damage; crit 19; 40'; Penetrating 2, Full Power, Lethal Only)
- Truncheon (+2 blundgeon damage; crit 20; Mighty, Stunning Attack)

1ep in mission equipment

Combat: Attack +4 (+5 melee); Damage +4 (unarmed), or by weapon of choice; Defense +5 (+3 Flat-footed); Initiative +2

Saves: Toughness +7/+4 without armor, Fortitude +6, Reflex +4, Will +6/+10 [Lionheart]

Abilities 40 + Skills 14 (56 ranks) + Feats 23 + Powers 6 + Combat 18 + Saves 7 + Drawbacks 0 = 108

Complications:
  • Berserker Button/Love (Angua): don't threaten or hurt Angua because, even if she doesn't rip your throat, you'll discover how much in love Carrot is
  • Dwarven mindset: while Carrot is extremly open-minded - maybe a little too much - he's also lived half of his life as a dwarf, so he's some trouble adjusting
  • Fame/Secret (heir to the Throne): Carrot seem to be a bona fide Skion, the last lliving heir to the throne of Ankh-Morpork
  • Honor (honest- good-natured and fair with everybody): Carrot has an uncanny ability to consider everyone point of view and be fair and just with them
  • Responsibility (to the Watch): Carrot his incredibly commited to the ideals of the Watch... ok, to his vision of the ideals of the Watch

 like Vimes Carrot usually operates at PL6, but when he is really convinced that he's fighting for a right cause he can use his Favoured Condition feat to boost to PL7 on offensive or defense

 I made the sword a device for the same reasons I used with Gaunt's powersword, the object isn't magical or anything, but his innate quality makes it a unique

 aside from that Carrot is a monster of charisma, he can more or less convince any Morporkian do to anything and inspire a bunch of common watchmen to stand their ground and arrest a dragon... as someone pointed out he has the charisma to lead an army but he has no such desire

 one little note about Angua, while Carrot rarely - if ever - go ballistic he really cares about her, I don't think that he killed the president of the assasins' guild just to save Vimes

An excellent build for an excellent character. I really think you got across Carrot's essential niceness. The fact that this guy could talk his way into a throne, even if he wasn't heir to one, could convince the people to form an army to help him fight for the throne, could just fight his way to the throne singlehandedly, and even could legitimately claim the throne without any of that, but...he doesn't want to. He'd rather just walk a patrol around the city and help out stopping the occasional criminal.

It's kind of like Superman. He could take over Metropolis and everyone would love him for it. But he'd rather just hang out and stop muggings.

If you want a 40k challenge. how about Calpernia from the crossfire and legacy novels. She was a fun character as an Arbiter.
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

I'm currently waiting for the Arbitres omnibus to arrive, the internet info about her are sadly little and limited. I'm very interested in her character being one of the few 40k named characters who isn't in the military.

Don't forget that if he tried to claim the throne, he would have to go up against Sam Vimes. Commander Vimes doesnt' like Kings. And as of 'Thud' Vimes has shown an elder-god his Pimp-Hand.

Probably the most badass Vimes moment so far (which is no small feat).

You want a wolf, do you? Say no, Sergeant Angua.

Sergeant Angua Von Überwald
Lady Delphine Angua Von Überwald

Power Level: 7* (112pp)

Abilities: STR: 14/20 (+2/+5), DEX: 14/18 (+2/+4), CON: 14/20 (+2/+5), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 16 (+3), CHA: 14 (+2)

Skills: Acrobatics 4 (+6/+8), Bluff 5 (+7), Climb 4 (+6/+9), Diplomacy 4 (+6), Gather Information 4 (+6), Handle Animal 4 (+6), Intimidate 6 (+8), Investigate 3 (+5), Knowledge (civics) 3 (+5), Knowledge (current events) 3 (+5), Knowledge (nobility and royalty) 2 (+4), Knowledge (streetwise) 4 (+6), Language 1 (Morporkian; Native: Überwaldian), Notice 3 (+6/+10), Profession (watchman) 2 (+5), Search 3 (+5), Sense Motive 3 (+6), Stealth 4 (+6/+8), Survival 2 (+5/+9), Swim 4 (+6/+9)

Feats: Animal Empathy, Attack Focus (melee) 4/5, Benefit 2 (rank: Watch's Sergeant), Defensive Attack, Diehard, Distracting Looks 3, Dodge Focus 1/3, Equipment 4, Fearsome Presence 3, Improved Initiative 1, Improved Trip, Move-by Action, Power Attack, Teamwork 1, Unbalancing Strike, Uncanny Dodge 1 (olfactory)

(Endurance 1)

Powers:

Regeneration 9 (Bruised [1 round], Staggered [5 minutes], Injured [20 minutes], Disabled [1 hour], Resurrection [5 hours, prevented by silver]; Drawbacks: Power loss [against silver, 2pp]; 9pp)
Wolf Senses (Super-senses 5 [Scent, Analytical (scent), Direction sense, Distance sense, Empatic link (to Carrot)]; Flaw: Limited [direction and distance to Carrot relative position]; 4pp)
Wolf Speech (Comprhend 2 [animals, speak and understand]; Limited [Broad category: canines]; 2pp)

Wolf form (Alternate Form 6; Flaw: Tainted [bestial urges]; Drawbacks: Temporary Disability [mute; -3], Temporary Disability [no hands; -3] 18pp)
- Enhanced Constitution 6
- Enhanced Dexterity 4
- Enhanced Strength 6
- Enhanced Skills 2 (Notice +4, Survival +4)
- Enhanced Feats 4 (Attack focus 1 [melee], Dodge focus 2, Endurance 1)
- Fangs (Strike 1; PF: Mighty, Improved Critical 1)
- Fur (Feature 1)
- Speed 1 (10 mph)
- Wolf Senses (Super-senses 3 [Low-light Vision, Extended 1 (Hearing, Scent)]; Drawback: Temporary Disability [lose Analytical; -1])

Equipment: Lantern (1ep), Modified Breastplate and Leathers (Protection 3 [quick release]; 4ep)

Copper's arsenal (Array; 10ep)
- Crossbow (+4 piecing damage; crit 19; 40'; Penetrating 2, Full Power, Lethal Only)
- Short Sword (+2 slashing or piercing damage; crit 19; Mighty)
- Truncheon (+2 blundgeon damage; crit 20; Mighty, Stunning Attack)

4ep in mission equipment

Combat: Attack +3 (+7/+8 melee); Damage +2 (unarmed), +6 (fangs), or by weapon of choice; Defense +6/+8 (+3 Flat-footed); Initiative +6/+8

Saves: Toughness +5/+2 without armor (+5 as wolf), Fortitude +5/+8, Reflex +4/+6, Will +6

Drawbacks: Involuntary Transformation (Common, Irresistible [when exposed to the full moon]; -5pp), Vulnerable (silver [common, +1 DC]; -2pp), Weakness (to silver [common; -1 STR per round]; -6pp)

Abilities 26 + Skills 17 (68 ranks) + Feats 27 + Powers 31 + Combat 16 + Saves 8 - Drawbacks 13 = 112

Complications:
  • Family issues: Angue and her family - especially her brother - don't go along well
  • Hatred (vampires): vampire and werewolves don't work together at all
  • Honor (vegetarian): Angua is strictly vegetarian, meaning that she only eat chickens when in wolf form, something that her relatives found weird
  • Love (Carrot)
  • Responsibility (to the Watch): Angua doesn't like to be a watchman as much as Carrot or Vimes, but she work along nonetheless
  • Rivalry (Sally Von Humpeding): Angua and Sally have major issues over several points, both racial and personal (they're both in love with Carrot)

 in her human form Angua operates at PL5.5, when wolfing out she climb up to PL7 (the stats after the slashes are for the wolf form), I decided not to gave her any rank of morph since Angua's wolf form is quite distinct having a mane of ash blond fur

 given that Angua seem to retain her intelligence and charisma toward canides when in wolf form I decided not to penalize her

 the quick release feature is unique to Angua's armor, it allows her to ditch the armor as a move action to avoid complication while morphing

 Angua is by far the worst marksman of the Watch, she might use crossbow and/or sword, but she doesn't do so usually

 while Angua's sense of smell is more efficient in wolf form she also lose the ability to discern clue from complex thinking, making the analytical part of the sense useless
