Notes: The Spartan is one of the most versatile Mecha in the Destroid series. It is the only Destroid
to have hands. This allows the Spartan to engage in close quarters combat and carry melee weapons. It can
also carry other handheld weapons like the Valkyrie's Gun pod. The Spartan ended up being useful for
civilian construction in the aftermath of the failed Zentraedi invasion.

The Spartan is armed with a variety of weapons meant for all combat ranges. It has a guncluster containing
numerous weapons meant for antiinfantry and antivehicle use. A missile pod is used for heavier targets
such as mecha. The spartan is well balanced in terms of armor, speed, and weaponry. The only real weakness of the spartan is it's short range compared to the other Destroids.

The Spartan was probably the most successful Destroid in the series. I rarely see it destroyed in the series
so it must have a higher survival rate. In fact Rick Hunter one of the heroes of Robotech once piloted a
Spartan himself. So it must be good if even one of the heroes piloted it.

The spartan also makes a appearance in battletech as well. In battletech it is called a archer. The archer is
a fire support mech that rarely goes into melee combat. Simply drop the guncluster to emulate the Archer
Battlemech. The famous mercenary Jaime Wolf of the Wolf Dragoons piloted a distinctive gold and blue Archer.

Most of the famous merc commanders piloted the venerable Archer heavy battlemech 'missile boat'... Jaime Wolf of the Wolf Dragoons, Morgan Kell of the Kell Hounds are the two that are the best known. And both were able to use use their Archers to great effect. The fact they used them heavily in some of the most famous one-on-one duels in the Battletech novels, something that the Archer isn't normally used for due to their lack of close in weapons. but they were good at using their maneuverablity to avoid taking too much damage and using their heavy missile barrage capacity to overwhelm their oppenents.

Jaime Wolf in fact had used a Star League-vintage Archer in his Warrior Trails to get into the Touman of Clan Wolf. Where he was able to take out FOUR of his Clan Truebirth oppenents who were piloting heavier and better armored and armed frontline Omini-Mechs!

Thus earning him Wolf as a surname (something that is almost as good as a bloodname when it comes to freebirths)... and getting him into Natasha Kerensky's attention, and got him and his brother who had also been successful in his trails... into the infamous Black Widow's command Star. Where they rose quickly together to command positions of the 328th Assault Cluster "The Lionhearted" that was one of the few Clan Military Formations to trace it's linage back to a Star League Defense Force command. And later gain the attention of the rest of the Clan Wolf Leadership... where Jaime and Jousha Wolf were given command of the Wolf Dragoons, with Star Colonel Natasha Kerensky being the truebirth representative of the Clan Council. And Jaime and Joshua were told that if they were successful, "Wolf" would be elevated to the status as a Bloodname and they would be the founders of the first new bloodhouse in centuries.

Of course the Dragoons came to the Inner Sphere and became the most infamous and extremely professional Mercenary Command in the history of the Inner Sphere.

Sorry for all that. but when you mentioned the Archer, i just had to offer a little history on just how amazing the thing is in Battletech lore. And just how good of a 'mech it is when you've got a legendary pilot. :)

a Woman after my own heart. :)

Me, I like the Wardog (I love the Guass Rifle, and I've been really good at cockpit hits with it), the Orion, the Wolverine and of course the Griffin... i've normally ended up piloting more medium 'mechs than the big dogs over the years. that speed and manuverablity allows for hit and fade attacks. Though the assault 'mechs ability to just wade into battle firing their weapons as they go is a great way of fighting... Of the assault 'mechs, i've only gotten to play as a Zeus and Thunderbolt driver.

If i get the chance, i'll post some of my battletech artwork to my artwork thread.

True... Let's get it back on track. :)

FASA/Battletech had actually purchased the rights to use the images of several mecha from the Japanese animation companies for the first editions of the game... it wasn't until Harmony gold got their panties in a bunch after the fact when Robotech had become so popular here in the United States. It's why the lawsuit that lasted so long only ended with FASA not having the right to use those images in any new products, and they didn't have to pay anything to Harmony Gold... it's a long drawn out and sorrid tale of woe.

If you go to the main sites you can find an entire article that tells what happened. And actually get to read the court findings from the case!

it's sad that Harmony Gold felt they had been infringed upon and waisted all that money, and ended up being part of the reason why FASA ended up going out of business....

Did not really go out of business just the name changed as the new version of the game with a new company seem to be all the same people making the new products for the Battletech line. Wizkids i think its called now.

I love the Mechwarrior RPG 3ed... now it's known as Classic Battletech RPG so it'd not be confused with the Mechwarrior: Dark Age mini game (i played that for a long time in a Stormhammer Zeus). I really didn't like the Dark Age... totally loved Classic battletech. then they did the jihad and all that to bring our classic battletech into the build up to the Dark Age. :(

Two of My favorite factions went bye-bye... the FRR KRA and the Com Guards. Though they did give me some hope that they still live on in other ways.. I still have my Lyrans to play (yes, the guys known for HEAVY and ASSAULT 'mech waves to deal with their oppenents, but they have a light mech with my favorite GAUSS Rifle).

Dire Wolf assault omni-mech is a great one too. :) heck if anyone wants to talk battletech let me know. i've been workign on a couple sites that could host the forums.

One of the funnest ones for me was when my clanner was chosen as champion to battle for a planets mineral rites. The condition was that the challneger would get any combiend tonnage of mecha and i had just me and the Madcat.

4 archers ironically enough jumped into the fray and quickly surrounded the 85 ton omnimech. I started off by duel PPC blasting two that tried to flank me blowing them both in half. the one in front got a shot off only to miss and have his pilot go wtf when I jump jetted the Madcat clear up and landed on the poor suckers head crushing the pilot compartment.

turned around and looked at the the last guy who promply surrendered.

planet ended up with the group there for a decent run of adventures before we left :D

Nice to see some fellow battletech fans out there. 8)

You know I actually tried converting battletech for Mutants and Masterminds. It didn't work out so well. The Mad Cat OmniMech was a nightmare to convert simply because it had so many weapons. Battletech had a habit of arming mechs with a dozen different weapons or more. I had more luck with the Thor/Summoner OmniMech and the Elemental Battle Armor (aka powerarmor) for Third Edition. Not sure I will post them though.

Even for the Destroids I had to use alternate effects or combining multiple weapons of the same kind into one weapon. Already the SDF-1 Macross I'm working on is turning into a ridiculously expensive monster worth around 500 points!

The Tomahawk will be next followed by the Monster Destroid. Strangely enough the Monster is turning out cheaper than the Tomahawk.
