-Harley was basically a walk-on character in the "Joker's Favor" episode, but Bruce Timm did such an AMAZING job on her character design that she immediately took off, and became a recurring character as The Joker's Number Two. An ideal sidekick, she gave a sense of obsessive romance and gleeful anarchy to an already crazy Joker, and it was so perfect they copied it entirely for the mainstream comics (of course, they couldn't resist dinking it up by making her a half-good guy and breaking her up with Mistah Jay almost immediately- I think they've spent far more time apart now). She was ALMOST sympathetic if not for the fact that she was so easily led. And that time she hooked bombs up TO BABIES. She can be currently seen dressing like a whore in both "Arkham City" and "Suicide Squad", proving that some people are INSANE- not just the whorish dress, but WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE THIS CHARACTER DESIGN?!? It was practically fully-formed awesome from the get-go! Idiots.

-She's a TON of fans' Fetish Fuel, but I never really found her that hot. I'm not turned off by the crazy, and her body's as nice as most Timm-girls (she's well below Selina or Ivy, though), but CLOWNS ARE SO FREAKING SCARY that I could never find one attractive. Any Harley Quinn Cosplay in real-life tends to be nothing short of horrifying to me, no matter how hot the girl.

-I still say most of her popularity comes from that episode that pretty much stated as text (as opposed to subtext) that she & Poison Ivy were totally "close" (wink wink, nudge nudge) during that one episode where they formed a crime gang. Heck, the writers even had The Joker call them a "pair of busy little beavers!" before they thought better of it (it even passed the censor board!). All thanks to one "sexy shirt switch".

-Harley is a capable PL 8 minion to The Joker, with a pair of Hyenas all her own, but comes up way under-pointed. Since this is the cartoon version, she's not really a physical threat to Batman, more of an annoyance and distraction, though her Bazooka and other Gadgets will give most anyone pause.

-Cheetah's just one of those villains that was never quite as big as she should have been. She sorta turned out being Wonder Woman's most-iconic nemesis, although really she'd be a small fry in anyone else's Rogues Gallery. She's had like FOUR variations over time, with tons of changes (identity, powers, everything), all implying that she ain't that great a character- I mean, if she's so special, then why is every version different? Last I checked, she was a Society Girl who doubled as a Sabretooth wannabe in her private life. I don't even think she's supposed to be that strong, but somehow she's supposed to hang with the PL 14-ish Wonder Woman. I don't get it.

-JLU Cheetah was a different "animal" of sorts, basically doing the "They all laughed at me, so I experimented upon myself" to become a metahuman "Freak" who would never have a chance at a real relationship. Someone get her in touch with the Furry Fandom, stat. She got some pathos in her story (she was allied with Lex Luthor's Injustice Gang, and gave them up to free Batman, who "touched" her, if you know what I mean), and it was implied that she was killed out of revenge by Luthor & Solomon Grundy. An animation error left her alive at the scene, and the writers just kinda shrugged and decided she was alive again, and as a villain, too- working for Grodd & Luthor's new Secret Society, as well as a minor super-gang featuring Copperhead, Blockbuster & K.G. Beast.

-Cheetah isn't too powerful in JLU- just a PL 10 Super-Criminal with some very good Cap Manipulation, which leaves her rather deadly if used properly. She has some animalistic senses, super-speed, and she's pretty hard to hit when she wants to be.

-TV is always at it's most fascinating when its ABOUT Television. Episodes like "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" (a "Simpsons" episode about how networks try to "shake up" old shows, and how they invade TV production with idiotic "hip" characters) and "Baby-Doll" (the episode that debuted this character) are extremely interesting to me, as they have TV writers explaining to audiences the inner-workings of the television industry. Fleeting fame, falling ratings, how producers intrude and alter things based off of focus-groups, etc... it's really neat stuff. There's a handful of books out there by Bill Carter that explain just HOW the Television Industry operates that I'd recommend to anyone- two of them feature the Late Night TV Wars of the early-90s and late 2000s, and another deals with the era around "Desperate Housewives" & "Lost" coming to air (the hoops shows have to jump through to get aired make me more amazed that ANY good Television has ever been produced), as well as NBC's faltering TV line.

-Baby-Doll was a creepy, sad addition to the Batman Rogues, being introduced as a minor threat (at best), and more of a detective story trying to find the heart of the problem. A former child star, Mary Louise Dahl was cursed with a disease that halted her growth, and much like the child stars of old, was unable to replicate her old fame. A failed turn as Lady Macbeth finished her career, and so she spent a huge amount of money trying to force her old family (including a Cousin Oliver-like late addition to the cast to boost ratings- and the real Cousin Oliver ACTED ON THIS EPISODE- this show ruled) into re-enacting the show. Once Batman & Robin solved the problem (by beating her unusually competent female henchman), there was a sad moment at the end, where Mary reverted to her 'adult voice' (instead of the childish high-pitched one she'd been using) and used her old catchphrase "I didn't mean to" to the sympathizing Batman.

-Mary's not much of a threat, though pretty accurate considering how little she is (think- Batman is the equivalent of a twenty-foot tall target for her), so she's PL 6. Her henchwoman on the other hand is the REALLY dangerous one, even getting Dick to go "Wow, lady... you're GOOD." in one of those funny mutual admiration things that martial artists get into. Even combined, it's more about the story/problem/skillwork than actually fighting, as Batman & Robin could make short work of them.

A later episode linked Baby Doll and Killer Croc romantically. *shudder* I just... I don't want to think about the mechanics of that. For all that I have a friend from high school who's going on her 30s and still looks like she could be just leaving elementary school (it runs in her family), that kind of thing kind of squicks me. Anyhow, depending on where you are in continuity in the game, that might be a Relationship complication (although my impression reading the episode synopsis was that it was one-sided and was only for that one episode).

I think it's funny that I LIKE Harley Quinn, since I think (and have always thought) the Joker is one of the lamest concepts ever. Normal Joker, "The Batman" Joker, especially the Brave & the Bold cartoon Joker, all of 'em. The character could vanish from all comics and cartoons and I'd be a happy man...happier anyway.

I like the concept of Cheetah, but yeah, they really torpedo the concept when they change the character with nearly every story.

As for a romance between Baby Doll and Killer Croc...*urk* (shudder). That's just nightmare fuel right there.

I believe there was an interview with one of the creators that said that Alex Ross gave them a lot of flack over their portrayal of Superman in the first season of Justice League.

But just to end any further debates, can we all agree that J'onn J'onzz is the best character in both the DCAU and the regular DCU and let it end there.

Hah, I'd posted the Commander Steel build JUST before watching the final "JLU" episode, and I'd forgotten his Cap-homage moment. The final episode stretch was really great, and only had a few minor flaws. A few notes:

1) Only Parademons & Darkseid in the assault on Earth? Despite showing Vundabarr (god the Fourth World is dumb...), Godfrey, Granny & the Female Furies in the episode just prior? This would have been a TOTALLY great way to show Wonder Woman & co. one-punching the Apokoliptians of note, instead of just steamrolling Mooks.

2) The whole "Anti-Life Equation" thing goes completely unexplained. Luthor just gets it, shows it to Darkseid and they go away. Having not watched "Superman" or read Wikipedia, I had no idea what the #$%@ that thing was. Poor use of a Macguffin, leaving it feeling like a last-minute Ass-Pull.

3) The "World of Cardboard" speech and subsequent two-punching is awesome. I can totally buy that Superman is better in subsequent fights- with experience (he'd aged noticeably in "Justice League" Season 1, and had quite a few more high-level fights by this point) and some power-boosting, Supes should be doing better. It's a grand comics tradition that guys get a HUGE boost when they first fight the hero, and the later fights are way easier. Plus, we know Superman's let loose before- against Darkseid, Mongul, etc. He just used a "rare opportunity to cut loose", which is his equivalent of talking smack before sending out an Uber-Punch.

4) Some good moments from the heroes & surviving villains (*sniff* poor Parasite...). And of course Flash is like the SUPER-PIMP OF THE UNIVERSE, getting lady-love from Linda Park, Fire, Tala, AND GIGANTA over the course of the series.

5) Too bad they could never do a later season- they'd killed just about all of DC's villains in this one! It does really hang a lampshade on how shitty DC's villains are compared to Marvel's, though- they'd used almost ALL of DC's notable villains (save the Bat-foes) in the new Legion of Doom/Secret Society, and other guys like Mongul & Doomsday were one-guy threats. A MARVEL variant of this (all the noticeable villains together) would read more like the freaking Acts of Vengeance or Secret Wars roster, with Doom, Red Skull, Bullseye, Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Magneto, Juggernaut, Kingpin, Kang, Ultron, Mandarin, etc., all on one squad. DC's by comparison is Luthor, some Superman guys, Sinestro, Giganta, and a legion of Jobber Villains.

Early "Justice League" notes:

1) Aquaman's appearances are pretty cool (as is the hand-cutting), though he's SUCH a giant ass no wonder nobody liked him. His villains sucks, though. I can't even remember his name, he was so one-note and "I want the throne"-y.

2) It's weird seeing Superman knocked down & out so many times. I mean, I'm the guy ARGUING that he's too powerful, thus boring, and that's why nobody's really given a crap about him since the 1960s (the last time his book was the top-seller), but he's downright FRAGILE, now, looking about as tough as J'onn or Diana. Not quite to "Superwussy" levels, yet. I can see how Supes Fanboys (who are generally among the "Superman must automatically beat EVERYONE" crowd) would be upset, though. And the creators flat-out admit they were guilty of having Supes go down WAY too many times- they ended up using it as a "crutch" to show how powerful the villain was (which is the old Martian Manhunter/Hank Pym role in the comics).

3) The first Villain Stable arc is weird to watch after having seen the good later seasons. The fights are just so... meager, by comparison. Guys like The Shade & Cheetah hand the heroes their ass at first, then start doing poorly, and the hits barely seem to make a mark. Superman & Solomon Grundy are going full-out and they're barely leaving dents in the wall, and everyone else is being one-punched instead of dealing out MASSIVE combos of powerful-looking hits. The fight choreography takes a HUGE leap in later seasons.

4) Bizarrely, Solomon Grundy falls to some Knock-Out Gas, then Batman's Utility Belt shocking him. This guy takes punches from SUPERMAN, and is a ZOMBIE. How did both of those take him out? I guess it fits the old concept of "D&D rules do not real-life make"- a Zombie has no Fortitude Save to fail against K.O. Gas, but there is no such thing as a "Fortitude Save" in real life. Of course, I'm not even sure if the guy can BREATHE.

She's got an interesting concept, based off of all those Sandman/Hydro-Man types out there, but she's make of INK instead of a more common material. A lot of the same tricks, though, right down to being super-strong.

-Oh hee hee man, that Booster Gold episode was THE BOMB. Basically playing up his status as the sucky super-hero, Booster got stuck on Crowd Control during a giant Mordru fight involving the entire League, so he ended up having to save the day in a manner nobody else saw, as a beautiful scientist's lab experiment went out of control, and he had to stop it. Booster is kind of one of those concepts that gets brought up from time to time in the comics, but is usually unsuccessful no matter how much they put behind him (he's kind of an example of "The Doom Patrol Effect" where you see tons of presumed fans of the work talking about it, but no reflection of that in sales). His book seems to be doing okay now, though. Still, very good episode, one of the funniest of the series. And Billy West as "Skeets", his little robot buddy (with Philip J. Fry's voice!) was as stroke of funny gold as well. His quote above was picture-perfect "kind of adult" humor that's very gross, but also very funny.

-I was totally gonna build up Booster as a fairly weak PL 9, but then I re-watch that episode and he just takes a SUBWAY TRAIN to the face, and basically gets up like he isn't even hurt. I mean... huh? That's like +11 Toughness easy (possibly even higher, but I'll leave it there and say it was mostly played for laughs), and puts him into the PL 9.5 framework (only on Defense, though). He's got a fairly low-end Blast, but he's strong enough to punch holes in a walking building (and fly THROUGH it), along with some other tricks. Skeets is basically an information-spouting Minion rather than anything that could physically interject himself, but he's worth 8 points. All-in-all, Booster's just a low-pointed PL 10 hero.
