Re: Jack of Spades' Iron Men: Mandarin

JoshuaDunlow wrote:I was trying to understand your build here, are you using Alternate Effects on Alternate Effects? If so, that wont work . If I am reading this wrong, just ignore me then :)
I'm not; the groupings are by special effect but are all bought as Alternate Effects off of one core 60 point ability. What's dubious about this setup is that there is no single effect that costs the full 60 points; the Mandarin can use any combination of two or more abilities that total up to 60 points. He pays 44 points for the 60 point array (with discount for Removable) and 22 points for the AEs (including 1 DAE).

My first draft bought each ring separately as an (approximately) 30 point power, some with AEs. I think the consolidated version better represents him, but the mechanics are on somewhat shaky ground rules-wise. I didn't find it any more abusive than spending 1 point for a complete alternate character sheet though.

Oh okay, gotcha :). Thanks for the clarification, and there is nothing wrong, with not using every point in a array's alternate effects.

    Power Points
    Abilities 66 + Powers 93 + Advantages 13 + Skills 19 + Defenses 14 = Total 205 points

    Complications
Motivation: Balder the Protector cares about all living things.

Enemy: Balder is the frequent target of the Norn Queen Karnilla.
Power Loss: Frigga’s ward does not work vs. mistletoe.
Relationships: Balder’s very loyal to Odin, and looks up to his big brother Thor.

    Notes
As I remember him from the comics, Balder was always presented as just some other guy from Asgard; certainly no mention was made of his being Odin’s heir, the god of beauty, and invulnerable. More recent writers have tried to remedy this, but it’s never quite fit with the Marvel Universe’s version of Asgard. Since I’m considering myself only loosely bound by the MU, I’m hoping this does remedy it. My Balder is younger than Thor and Loki, and thus Loki is accepted as being in line for the throne ahead of him.

Frigga got every living and nonliving thing to swear not to hurt Balder. Living things can make their own choices, so he’s not Immune to damage from them, but nothing non-living can harm him, including most importantly weapons.

Balder also owns a truly awesome boat, Hringhorni, capable of holding all the Aesir.

Jack of Spades' Asgardians: Warriors Three

    Post by jspade »

    Hogun the GrimPL 10
    Abilities: Str 5, Sta 5, Agl 2, Dex 2, Fgt 11, Int 3, Awe 4, Pre 0
Equipment: Mace (Strength-based Damage 3), Armor (Impervious Toughness 4)
Powers: Density 2, Permanent; Enhanced Strength 5, Limited to Lifting; Immunity 7 (Aging, disease, all environmental conditions); Penetrating Strength Damage 5
Advantages: All-Out Attack, Defensive Attack, Equipment 2, Improved Initiative, Improved Smash, Languages (English, German, Norse), Power Attack, Tracking
    Skills: Insight 2 (+6), Intimidation 8 (+8), Perception 2 (+6) [Tracking], Ranged Combat: Thrown 6 (+8)
    Offense: Initiative +6, Mace +11 (Damage 8), Unarmed +7 (Damage 10)
    Defense: Parry 11, Dodge 7, Will 8, Fortitude 6, Toughness 6
    Totals: Abilities 56 + Powers 26 + Advantages 8 + Skills 8 + Defenses 9 = 107 points

Dour, taciturn Hogun seldom says more than three words. The two are usually something to the effect of "We're doomed." Often short-tempered, he's also often the voice of reason among the Warriors Three.

    Fandral the DashingPL 10
    Abilities: Str 4, Sta 5, Agl 4, Dex 2, Fgt 10, Int 1, Awe 2, Pre 2
Equipment: Sword (Strength-based Damage 3, Improved Critical), Armor (Impervious Toughness 4)
Powers: Density 2, Permanent; Enhanced Strength 5, Limited to Lifting; Immunity 7 (Aging, disease, all environmental conditions); Penetrating Strength Damage 4
Advantages: Accurate Attack, Attractive, Defensive Attack, Equipment 2, Improved Defense, Improved Disarm, Improved Initiative, Languages (English, German, Norse), Power Attack, Precise Attack (Close Cover), Quick-Draw
    Skills: Acrobatics 5 (+9), Athletics 2 (+6), Close Combat: Sword 3 (+13), Persuasion 8 (+10/+12) [Attractive]
    Offense: Initiative +6, Sword +13 (Damage 7), Unarmed +6 (Damage 9)
    Defense: Parry 15, Dodge 10, Will 8, Fortitude 5, Toughness 5
    Totals: Abilities 52 + Powers 25 + Advantages 12 + Skills 8 + Defenses 17 = 115 points

An irrepressible swashbuckler and romantic, Fandral's bravery and optimism frequently gets the Warriors Three in over their heads – a fact Hogun can be relied upon to point out. Fandral is usually surrounded by a bevy of admirers, but his follow-through leaves something to be desired; his romantic disasters are more common than his triumphs. Fandral does the right thing without a thought – which, again, Hogun will point out.

    Volstagg the VoluminousPL 10
    Abilities: Str 11, Sta 12, Agl 0, Dex 0, Fgt 6, Int 0, Awe 0, Pre 2
Equipment: Battleaxe (Strength-based Damage 3), Armor (Impervious Toughness 4)
Powers: Density 2, Permanent; Immunity 7 (Aging, disease, all environmental conditions). Girth: Growth 3, Permanent; Immunity 3 (Cast-Iron Stomach, Slam damage)
Advantages: Equipment 2, Fast Grab, Improved Grab, Improved Hold, Improved Initiative, Improved Trip, Interpose, Languages (English, German, Norse), Luck 4, Power Attack
    Skills: Deception 4 (+6), Expertise: Food 4 (+4), Persuasion 6 (+8).
    Offense: Initiative +4, Axe +6 (Damage 14), Unarmed +6 (Damage 11)
    Defense: Parry 7, Dodge 6, Will 5, Fortitude 12, Toughness 12
    Totals: Abilities 42 + Powers 27 + Advantages 10 + Skills 8 + Defenses 14 = 105 points

Volstagg is fat, vain, boastful, and cowardly, but also a boon companion to Thor, Fandral, and Hogun. He was much more courageous (and muscular) as a younger man, but marriage and children have made him both softer and less willing to charge into danger. However, when his courage fails (which is often), he usually manages to stumble into victory through innate clumsiness. Of course, Volstagg claims this was all part of his plan.

      Notes
      Daddy’s home...

Odin doesn’t get a fair shake in the comics. He acts more like generic sky-father benevolent Judeo-Christian deity than his mythological self, who was a wise, cunning, and not very nice leader of a warrior race. He’s a master of magic, patron of poetry, and as much a wanderer as a king. Far from trying to prevent wars, he’s known for starting them. And he tricks rather than fights his way out of most challenges.

Gungnir is not a Device for the same reason Mjolnir isn’t; Odin can call it back to his hand at will.

The Odinsleep keeps Odin from just doing everything himself; barring blasting, shapechanging, and bullying his subjects, any use of the Odinforce puts him at risk of the Odinsleep.

Odin does not gently persuade his subjects like a kindly father. He’s forceful and bullying, which doesn’t exactly avoid conflict with other peoples. Odin doesn’t care. Though he rules a peaceful realm, anyone who doesn’t acknowledge him as supreme is sooner or later going to end up at war with Asgard. Probably both sooner and later. So be it.

Odin generally conserves his power, using Deception, Intimidation, and Ritualist to supplement his Expertise: Ruler. In war, he can use Expertise: Ruler for strategy as well, though he’s often so confident of victory that he’ll view the war more as a teaching tool for Thor or Loki than as a serious threat.

11/14/2013: Odin gets bumped to PL 16 as I work out PLs for cosmic entities.
3/23/2014: Minor update to Sleipnir for new Growth house rules.

        * Without Defensive Roll

        Power Points
        Abilities 76 + Powers 70 + Advantages 23 + Skills 15 + Defenses 8 = Total 192 points

        Complications
Motivation: Heimdall’s sacred duty is to guard Asgard from all external threats. His loyalty to realm and its ruler is unshakable.
Obsession: Heimdall stares out into the void constantly, never leaving his post for a moment.

        Notes
Heimdall’s always been one of my favorite Asgardian gods, probably because he embodies the “do one thing, do it well” ethic I admire. Heimdall is always on watch, and the other gods pretty much count on him to be a one-man version of the Spartans at Thermopylae for anything short of Ragnarok.

Heimdall isn’t designed to win fights so much as he is to hang in them, remaining a threat you can’t bypass while holding out as long as possible. He’s one of the few Asgardians to stress defense over offense.

Heimdall can see anywhere in the Nine Worlds, and has a range penalty of about −1 per light year on his hearing and vision; vacuum doesn’t impede his hearing and total darkness is no barrier to his vision.

I like the presentation of Bifrost from the movies (though not its use as a weapon), so that’s the version I’m presenting here. Himinbjörg is the gatehouse where the Bifrost “stargate” is located. Presumably Heimdall has a keg of mead somewhere in there.

        Idris Elba ruled as Heimdall.

        EDIT: Removed Growth.

          Complications
Motivation: Karnilla does not aknowledge Odin’s rule over her, but is completely in love with Balder.
Allies: Karnilla has been consulted by both the Enchantress and Loki for help in their goals.
Relationship: Karnilla will do almost anything to win Balder, both villainous and heroic.

          Notes
Karnilla took some work, because I had to figure out how I wanted to handle Marvel-style magic dueling. I’m not happy with they usual Marvel floating force disk being treated as Protection; I don’t recall too many cases where some damage got through. Eventually I settled on the Mystic Defenses array.

Also, “Karnilla the Norn Queen.” The Norns are not a race. In keeping with trying to stay closer to the myth, I made Karnilla one of the lesser Norns, a seer but not a weaver of fate. She’s one of the Vanir who never accepted Odin as their ruler. This explains her problems with Asgard and gives her an actual goal to go toward – independence from Asgard for Vanaheim.

Karnilla’s ability to manipulate magical energies is second only to the Odinforce, and her knowledge of ritual magic actually exceeds Odin’s.

Good job on Karnilla, and I definetly agree with the way you have her background.

Ulik epitomizes the big, dumb bruiser. He can give Thor a fight, but he never wins and that’s ultimately all he’s good at.

            Power Points
            Abilities 68 + Powers 68 + Advantages 6 + Skills 30 + Defenses 22 = Total 194 points

            Complications
Enemy: The Enchantress wants Thor, partly for his political position, partly for his sheer manly yumminess, and partly because he’s always preferred Sif to her.
Relationships: The Enchantress has used the Executioner as her muscle, playing on his unforced love for her, and is a frequent ally of Loki. She was involved with Heimdall for a time. Karnilla was one of her teachers.
Temper: Being perceived as more beautiful or desirable than the Enchantress is a sure way to make her your enemy.

            Notes
I tried to make the Enchantress fit Asgard better, but I couldn’t find a hook. While Asgard has seductive fertility goddesses, they just don’t act like her enough that I could justify making her, say, Freya the Enchantress. So she survives pretty much intact in her Marvel Universe form, non-Norse name and all.

Magically, the Enchantress is a notch below Karnilla, which makes sense given that Karnilla kicked her out before her training was done. Notably, she doesn't do the mystic force-shields; the fights I can find her in generally show her relying on dodging and blasting rather than shields. Her mind-control magic is pretty powerful, and is her real forte; she pretty much doesn't fight unless she really has to.

The Enchantress’ most frequent strategy is to disguise herself in order to get close to a man with what she wants, then use her magic to seduce him and make him her thrall. One variation on this was when she disguised herself as the Valkyrie to form the Liberators, a team of female super-heroes opposed to the Avengers.

            Complications
Motivation: The Executioner wants to be accepted in Asgard, or avenged on it for abandoning him.
Enemy: The Executioner has clashed repeatedly with Thor.
Relationship: The Executioner is totally devoted to the Enchantress.
Reputation: The Executioner is held to be bloodthirsty, giving no quarter and taking no prisoners.

            Notes
The Executioner, Thor’s other punching bag. Skurge, though, has more personality than Ulik, plus he got an awesome death scene. I remember him best as the Enchantress’ dupe, would-be boyfriend, and muscle.

In the interest of fitting him into Asgardian myth a little better, I played up his Frost Giant side more than the comics. He’s still mostly a melee fighter, but he does have the ice tricks available for some color. I dispensed with the Bloodaxe; it seemed too much like a Mjolnir-wannabe in search of a justification, and the Executioner I remember got along just fine with a simple axe.

Skurge is just over nine feet tall, small for a frost giant, but still among the strongest of his kind. He has just enough of his race’s power of illusion to disguise himself as a human or Asgardian; otherwise, his Jotun heritage shows most in his ability to create ice harder than steel. The Executioner is one of the few Jotuns who forms true weapons, rather than just spikes or clubs, and he’s capable of real works of desolate, haunted art when the mood strikes him.

What can I say? It’s Captain America. Following the movies and the Ultimates, I gave him low-level super-strength and a sidearm, but he’s still far more of a skills-based character than anything else.

Cap always has teammates, be it the Avengers, the Falcon, the Howling Commandos, Agent 13, or the D-Man. His attempts to go off by himself just don't last. Cap brings out the best in people; unlike the Batman, who tends to overshadow, Cap's presence enhances others as he pushes their strengths to the forefront.

Interesting choice for his shield there. And i like that you made it concentration to use effectively, which makes sense, otherwise it just acts like a normal shield. Though I think his fighting skill and defenses are way out of proportion, unless you think Cap can take on superman.
