You know, normally I'm a fan of D-list characters...even D-list Avengers...heck, even Z-list Avengers (in the 1970's Red Wolf was given Avengers membership in Captain America, but it was promptly forgotten), but Machine Man? Urk.

Yeah. X-51 kinda sucks. I guess not even Jack Kirby batted 1000. I'm just including Machine Man for completion's sake.

Fame: Delroy was an Olympic gold medalist before becoming a superhero, a religious spokesman, and an Avenger.
Relationship: Delroy has close friendship with Chuck and Hal Chandler, the original 3-D Man.
Responsibility: Delroy has conflicting responsibilities as a member of the Triune Understanding and the Avengers.

Delroy Garrett Jr. was an Olympic track star until he was discovered to be juicing. Feeling like a dejected loser, Delroy joined up with the Church of Scientol...I mean Triune Understanding. They claimed that their teachings unlocked the super heroic potential within Delroy, when they had really given him the stolen powers of the original 3-D Man. Calling himself Triathlon, Delroy began acting as the Triune Understanding's personal superhero and celebrity spokesman. Eventually it turned out the crazy cult he joined was actually run by the bad guy and he joined the Avengers and here we are. Triathlon is a PL 9 PC with the power of tripleness. His muscles are as strong as, his senses are as sharp as, his tissues are as dense as, and his reactions as quick as three men. These low level super attributes allow our guy to hit his caps unarmed or with active defenses and provide for a couple of utility powers like senses and regen. 250 feet per round might not seem like a lot for a guy usually drawn with speed lines coming off of him but keep in mind three (hah!) things 1) double move 2) extra effort can boost speed 3) there is literally no way Delroy can fail to make the DC 15 Athletics check to increase speed. Oh yeah, the goggles gifted to him by the first 3-D Man let Delroy recognize shape-shifted Skrulls.

X-51 has two great runs-one in Earth X (which is flawed but still pretty good) and one in Nextwave and his subsequent appearances. One serious, one not so much, both entertaining.

Granted Nextwave is supposed to be outside mainstream Marvel, but that didn't stop anyone who wanted to use the comic relief version of the character.

I've heard nothing but good things about Earth X, but never had the chance to read it. Nextwave has gotten more mixed reviews. I saw some of it summarized when I was researching Photon and Machine Man for my builds, but not much more. One time Boom-Boom told Beast that she was on Nextwave and so should be taken seriously and he told her he didn't know what that was. The other was when Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were interviewing super powered nannies and Machine Man showed up claiming that Nextwave could have kicked all the Avengers asses. Including that, I have never read a single appearance of Machine Man where he seemed at all cool.

I've seen some of the Nextwave stuff and Machine Man does a pretty good "disgruntled" artificial intelligence. Of course, the entire storyline was somewhat tongue in cheek with Monica eschewing a codename and from somewhere, a daughter of the 1970's monster hunter hero Bloodstone showing up...and using firearms, even though it's patently obvious she doesn't need them.

However, much like Damage Control (which I loved), the self-aware, quirky story telling in Nextwave is not to everyone's taste.

Complications
Helltouched: Patsy was once driven to suicide by dark magic, forced to endure gladiatorial combat in Hell, and then brought back from death. Its complicated her life.
Motivation: Thrills: Patsy always loved sports and games and grew up idolizing superheroes, wanting to do what they do.
Relationship: Patsy is married to Daimon Hellstrom, but has an ex-husband in Buzz "Mad Dog" Baxter.
Rivalry: Hedy Wolfe of Patsy and Hedy fame.

Patricia "Patsy" Walker is pretty much just a D-list Avenger, but has a publication history almost as long as Captain America's. Patsy started off as the star of teen romance comics, which were retconned into being stories her mother wrote in universe. Growing up as the star of a comicbook, Patsy wanted to be a superhero, and she got her chance when she met the Beast and the Avengers. Patsy started off with the Cat's old enhance-the-abilities-of-whatever-woman-wears-it costume and used it to fight alongside the Avengers and then the Defenders. Eventually she married fellow defender Daimon Hellstrom and the two of them set themselves up as occult investigators. She died and came and now has the magical abilities to summon her old costume, sense magic, and see evil. Altogether this makes Hellcat a PL 9 superheroine with the cost of a PL 10. Patsy hits all of her caps so long as she's wearing her costume, which is usually since she can summon the thing. Having been a model, a writer, an Avenger, a Defender, an investigator, and an Initiative trainer Patsy has a number of skills backing up her PL 9 melee and PL 7 ranged attacks.

Power Points
Abilities 82 + Powers 159 + Advantages 5 + Skills 28 (56 ranks) + Defenses 16 = 290

Complications
Power Loss: Sersi's mental powers are unable to touch the minds of the Deviants.
Relationship: Sersi always has a relationship, whether with Makkari, Black Knight, Dr. Samuel Holden, or whomever.
Reputation: People think of Sersi as irresponsible, catty, and a bit loose. People are right.
Responsibility: Sersi is often torn between her duties to her teammates, the Avengers and her people, the Eternals.
Rivalry: Sersi and Crystal are rivals stemming from their mutual desire for Black Knight.

Sersi is a member of the Eternals, an immortal super powered offshoot of humanity created by the Celestials. She inspired Circe of the Odyssey so that should tell you something. So should the fact that she joined the Avengers to hit on Captain America. They let her stay because holy crap, Sersi is powerful. Of an entire race of people with cosmic/psionic power out the yin-yang, Sersi is their highest level and most accomplished matter rearrangement adept. That's why the base power in her sickenly huge array costs 98 points. She can turn 6 tons of anything into any other thing she wants and it will stay that way forever. Aside from the transmutation powers that make her PL 12 Sersi can also hit caps with cosmic blasts and a force field. Then there's her lower level but still extensive mental powers. Powers aside Sersi is also an immortal socialite capable of dazing, fascinating, lying her (or your) pants off, and planning parties of international import.

And despite her hedonistic ways, she's not portrayed as an airhead...will wonders never cease? What I find most amazing is that Sersi was never subjected to the Bendis treatment. As a powerful female hero, I would've thought he'd leap at the chance to have her go mad, betray the Avengers, turn evil, then kill her off. I mean, doing one or more (sometimes all) of those things seems to be his response to any powerful, popular female character outside Ms. Marvel.

That's one thing I like about the character, that she's an eccentric, hedonistic party girl b***h but not an idiot. Sersi shows the difference between shallow and stupid. With regards to the Bendis thing, I think she might have been off limits. I know that Sersi was dead for a fair portion of the modern age and that Neil Gaiman had dibs for his Eternals miniseries.

Power Points
Abilities 106 + Powers 141 + Advantages 16 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Defenses 18 = 300

Complications
Disability: Bob is not a very well person. In technical terms he suffers from being a f*****g looney.
Enemy: The Sentry's greatest enemy is the Void, his own dark impulses given form.
Power Loss: Sentry can be forced into his Bob Reynolds persona by overusing his powers, being psychically dominated, or exposed to Negative Zone Radiation.
Relationship: Bob is married to his old sweetheart, Lindy Reynolds.

Robert Reynolds drank an ultra-concentrated form of the super soldier serum and became the man with the power of a million exploding suns. Bob gained super speed, super strength, enhanced intelligence, flight, energy projection, the whole thing and set out to fight evil. He became best friends with Reed Richards and the Hulk. He hooked up with Crystal and Rogue. Then he got erased from the memory of everybody on Earth. Until he came back. Since his triumphant return Bob has basically been the Superman of the Avengers. There's just a little problem. He's absolutely crazy face. Schizophrenia, agoraphobia, insecurity, god complex, social anxiety, dissociative personality; the Sentry has at least as many mental disorders as he has super powers. Which is probably for the best because otherwise his PL 15 300 point glowing ass would fly in and solve all the problems instantly. Sentry uses super speed and super strength to get to caps unarmed and with active defenses. His area energy attacks also hit caps and his targeted power is PL 13. His favorite moves are flying through people, ripping people in half, throwing people into the sun, and dying once everybody realizes what a crappy character he is.

Grab, +9 (DC Spec 19)
Throw, +0 (DC 24)
Unarmed, +9 (DC 24)

Defense
Dodge 8, Parry 9, Fortitude 9, Toughness 9, Will 7

Power Points
Abilities 62 + Powers 9 + Advantages 6 + Skills 16 (32 ranks) + Defenses 12 = 105

Complications
Disability: Dumphrey has heart problems resulting from his treatment by the Power Broker.
Honor: Dunphy is an honorable man who will always try to help people and do the right thing.
Relationship: D-Man is good friends with Captain America and the Thing.
Reputation: D-Man has a bad rep for either sucking up to Cap or hiding out in stinking sewers.

Dennis Dunphy was an athlete who always idolized heroes. When he got the chance, he purchased power from Power Broker Inc. and went out with Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation as Demolition Dunphy. Dunphy impressed Ben Grimm and Sharon Ventura when he sucked up withdraw from his Power Broker drugs rather than turn against his companions. Around this time, Captain America was also getting interested in the Power Broker, so he and the new Demolition Man teamed up. D-Man eventually was recommend to the Avengers where he got made fun of. D-Man is at the low end of the Avengers being PL 9 and only PL 7 in cost. But he makes up for it with heart, even defending the homeless people of Zerotown when he lost his own way. D-Man hits caps with close attack and defense and is quite capable of mixing it up grappling having been a pro-wrestler. He can use his enhanced body to move, soak damage, or smash but that's sadly it.

I would say that the Sentry probably deserves Extraordinary Effort. Despite his typically high level of power, it's generally understood he can go beyond those 'limits' when be has to.

Honestly I like the character, even in his throw-back Silver Age esque appearances. Fighting a guy with three brains is just funny.

Surprisingly, as underpointed as he is, as annoying as his mish, mash Daredevil meets Wolverine costume is...D-Man is a whole lot less of a loser than the ultimate Mary-Sue, Sentry is.

And considering that D-man borders on being a joke character, that's saying something.

I liked D-Man when he was running around as a part of the Captain's crew (late '80s), despite Wolverine's dorky mask on top of a costume designed by a blind man.
