ah the celestials

"We;ve taken the Destroyer, infused it with the souls of every last asgardian except thor, armed it with a greatsword forged from the Rhinegold itself, and tag-teamed with the eternal Uni-Mind..."

*.5 rounds of combat later*

"the celestials have taken notice of you, and their posture indicates annoyance..."

*rolls*

"you're dead."

You remember that fight too Kreuz? Actually I found it a pretty good object lesson in...there are some things you just can't fight. The Celestials are a gang of them.

I've always liked the idea presented in Earth-X regarding the Celestials.

In short every planet they visit they deposit an embryonic Celestial at its core, and that it is actually this that Galactus feeds on. killing the rest of the planet is just a side effect.

Vexous wrote:I wonder if you should toss in Immune to crits in there? If anyone has something like that I'd think it'd be a Celestial. Just a thought, either way, good stuff on these guys. Dishing out 23 damage puts them just a shade under Omega's 24 from the Freedom City book which is exactly where I had these guys pegged at. Well done Gaz.
Thanks, Vexous! I'm glad that you like where I put those guys. But, if they had immunity to critical hits then there's no way that Invisible Woman or Odin could get lucky and really hurt them. Which they have.

The Destroyer is also 2000 feet tall and being piloted by Odin.

Nothing changes.

That is a nifty idea. But what's the explanation for not every race from those planets having Celestial modifications?

other attempt to "deal with" the celestials

players: "turns out every living being on this planet has superpowers. we're going to mentally link all their minds up and fire their combined power through Jean Grey, who apparentlyt has just a wee bit of Pheonix powers left in her... somehow. unlike those other guys, we know we've only got one shot, so we're aiming for the big red one."

*rolls*

GM: "congratulatoins, your attack has blown off a chunk of his right thumb. the Celestial's posture indicates that they are... surprised but pleased with this turn of events. they up and leave, thus sparing this puny planet for future developments."

Well they usually make at least 3 races. Eternals, Deviants, Modified standard race. In Earth-X they took what was the normal humanity (looked similar to Moon Boy actually) and changed them into Homo Sapiens. They implanted something called a celestial seed in the new humanity. There were stages to the seeds development.

I'll use Marvel races as examples: (warning these are major plot points that run the length of the books)

No Seeds: Humanity without Celestial interference. Alternatively the Celestial seed could become a throw-back. Examples: Moon Boy, Sasquatch, Wolverine, Werewolves, generally animalistic/feral characters.

Stage one: Normal humans. just your run of the mill people.

Stage two: superhumans. Mutants, Altered Humans, etc. Everyone not a baseline normal.

Stage three. Homogenized Super human. all the supers having the same powers. The example they gave were the Skrulls. Also Reed Richard's seed jumped stages when it activated.

Stage four: Powers influenced by belief. The example here was the Asgardians (and I just gave away a major plot point). Powers and forms that are based off of the belief of the people around them. Franklin Richards was a 4th stage.

Stage five was a theoretical possibility. They didn't really have an example.
I highly recommend the trilogy. it's a fantastic read.

Responsibility: Odin is All-Father and King of Asgard and all the Asgardians.

Odin Borson is a god of wisdom, magic, war, and death (also poetry). That's why he costs 400 points. Dude sold his eye for wisdom and impaled himself on a tree for power. You know he's hardcore. PL 16 with his personal powers like his cap hitting spear and his inviolate mind and his super tough armor and the biggest variable pool you're ever likely to see. That thing lets him hurl magic, scry across worlds, bestow power, warp minds, or all of the above at once. On top of that he is the absolute ruler of a nation of warrior gods . Odin can spank Thor and actually harm a Celestial. And he's got Extraordinary Effort for when he just has to create an entire plane of existence in an instant.

That is a very awesome Odin build Gaz! With the Odinforce and his all around badassness, I can definitely see how he could stand up to Galactus. He won't win Galactus, but he'll at least be able to last a few rounds. :D
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Power Points
Abilities 42 + Powers 178 + Advantages 2 + Skills 6 (12 ranks) + Defenses 12 = 240

Complications
Built for Destruction: The Destroyer exists to destroy things. This motivation can overide those of a person animating the armor.
Disability: Setting your lifeforce to animate the Destroyer leaves your body a comatose lump.

The Destroyer is pretty simple. It is a big, empty suit of armor that destroys things. Its got a basic machine intelligence or it can be animated by the life force of a user. Problem with doing that is that unless the "wearer" is exceptionally strong willed then the basic machine intelligence can override them and go back to destruction. So although it does cost the proper amount of points, this thing is definitely NOT for PCs. Its damn near indestructible with immunities to fortitude, mental, and social attacks plus half immune to toughness with capped out active defenses. And then it can regenerate on top of that. It also hits caps with its crazy face beam attacks and it just pour them on concentration style. Despite its lumbering appearance this thing is surprisingly fast and it can fly. Odin made it to stand up to the Celestials and it survived being attacked by eight of them at once. I guess the dude knows what he's doing.

Complications
Enemy: Brother Hades and forbears the Titans kinda hate Zeus.
Relationship: Zeus has a wife in Hera and a child in roughly one gagillion people.
Reputation: Angry jerk and irresponsible philanderer.
Responsibility: Zeus is the ruler of all and father of most of Olympus.
Temper: Zeus is an angry god.

Zeus Panhellenios is the other divine wellspring of power and creation in the Marvel mythos. Compared to Odin, he's not as smart, not as wise, and less capable with huge variable pools. But on the other hand, Zeus is stronger and more likely to mix it up. Plus as the original pimp, Zeus is super duper charming and slick. I'm pretty sure one of his domains is as the god of playas. He derives a lot of his power from his Thunderbolt, which is a PL 16 cap hitting attack. He also hits caps on close D and can throw around enough variable power to raise any other stat that high easily. Plus Extraordinary Effort.

Offense

Groundstrike: Burst Area Damage 14 (DC 29)
Knockdown: Burst Area Affliction 14 (DC Dog/Fort/Will 24)
Pushback: Burst Area Move Object 14 (DC 24)

Power Points
Abilities 110 + Powers 39 + Advantages 19 + Skills 24 (48 ranks) + Defenses 18 = 210

Complications
Enemy: Herc's brother Ares and step mother(?) Hera hate him.
Relationship: Hercules has a wife, Hebbe and best bud, Amadeus Cho.
Reputation: Drunken and debauched dunderhead and man-whore.
Rivalry: Thor. It is EPIC.
Temper: Herc has the potential to descend into uncontrollable rages, like the time he killed his original family.

Heracles Panhellenios is one of Zeus' sons by a mortal woman who was not his wife. Hera didn't like this and so started trying to kill the boy while he was still in the crib. He Romanticized his name to get rid of the "Hera" part fairly quickly. Then he spent a couple of hundred years kicking ass and partying down. Because that's the kind of demigod Herc is. He's a rival of Thor, but lacks all the fancy weather powers and blunt instruments, so he's a power level lower and substantially cheaper. In fact he's a perfect PL 14 PC. Herc hits caps unarmed, grappling, parrying, and with saves for the proper points cost. He's got tons of grappling feats cause he like invented wrestling, a bunch of people skills cause he's a pimp, and Ultimate Strength because he is The Prince of Power, the Lion of Olympus, and the God of Strength. Just ask. He'll tell you.
