Complications
Cross-Wired: Cassandra's brain doesn't work like other people's due to her twisted upbringing. The language center of her brain is wired to process movement, nuances of expressions and position, not words. Forming sentences is a chore, and reading is difficult at best. This definitely puts a damper in her interactions with other people and civilized society.
Daddy/Mommy Issues: Cass has a really strange relationship with her father, David Cain, and her mother, Lady Shiva. Alternating between hate and love, both mutual and unilateral, any encounter she has with either of them is bound to be awkward, complicated, and potentially lethal.
Fear of Abandonment: Cassandra’s brutal upbringing has left her with a serious fear of abandonment, and a vulnerability to mental manipulation.

Real Name: Cassandra Cain, Cassandra Wayne
Age/Gender: Female, late teens or early twenties.
Ethnicity/Nationality: Asian-Caucasian; American, Chinese
Occupation: Crime fighter, assassin
Base of Operations: Gotham City; Hong Kong, China
Appearance
Cassandra is a petite Asian young woman whose half-Caucasian heritage only shows in a lighter skin tone, as she otherwise has deep black hair kept chin-length and somewhat messily, and brown eyes. In civilian attire she dresses grungily and in overly casual fashion. As Black Bat, she wears a variation of her old Batgirl costume: skintight black leather with a yellow bat symbol on her chest and yellow utility belt with several pouches; instead of the traditional cowl of the Bat family, she wears a black domino mask and a tattered cloak and scarf, with bandages wrapped around her forearms and claw-like talons protruding from the fingertips of black gloves.
Personality
People can easily mistake Cassandra's quiet and serene demeanor with a sullen and reserved personality, but they would be wrong. Cass has little use for words and prefers to express herself by action, touch and motion, and she is very expressive in that regard, not afraid to offer spontaneous hugs, warm smiles and silly dances, sometimes punctuated by monosyllables. She has an utmost loyalty to the legacy of the Bat, even to the prejudice of the personal interests of Bruce Wayne, but will never outright betray him. However, she carries a tortured past, both in childhood and recent years where she was drugged, brainwashed and forced to do unspeakable things. Remorse eats her up from time to time, coupled with an almost childish terror to be left alone by the people she trusts and considers her family.
Powers & Abilities
Cass is able to read body language as easily as people read a book, and so it's almost impossible to fool her. She's a fearsome martial artist, second only (and sometimes surpassing) even her mother, Lady Shiva, and a dexterous acrobat thanks to Batman's additional training. She is a budding investigator and detective but so far she has operated as the enforcer for Batman's mission. She sports a lot of the "official" Bat-gear in her utility belt, but uses it seldom, preferring to enter hand-to-hand combat.
Background
Cassandra was conceived as an experiment. Assassin David Cain convinced martial arts mistress Lady Shiva to bear his child in order to produce the perfect genetic combination of physical prowess, and he applied a brutal upbringing method by depriving Cassandra of any mode of interaction that was not based on motion. Little Cass didn't learn to speak or read, but learned to interpret body language just as she trained and sparred with the deadliest members of the League of Assassins.
Cain's plans backfired when he took Cass to her first hit when she was 8. She ripped the throat out of her target, but read his dying spasms and was horrified by what she had just done. She ran away from her father and wandered the world until she arrived to Gotham City in her teens, where she worked as a courier for Barbara Gordon. Cass proved her worth by saving Commissioner Gordon from her own father and proving to Batman the extent of her training. Batman recognized Cain's style and kept Cass close, and earned his trust quickly enough to earn the cowl and mantle of Batgirl.
Without the immediate worries of survival or running away from her father, Cass began developing her personality and caught up with teenage woes, rebelling Batman's strict commands more than once and acting on whims. During one of her cases, she rescued a young psychic who re-wired her brain so that she could speak with words in her mind rather than with images and sense of motion, but this screwed with her combat ability and had to retrain... to the point that she sought out Lady Shiva, who recognized her as the daughter she had borne for David Cain and abandoned. Shiva agreed to train her until she was ready to challenge her to the death, which actually helped Cass deal with a lingering deathwish she had been carrying out of deep remorse for her first and only brutal murder.
She served Batman in many capacities, and defied her own past as the The One Who Is All, thus named by R'as al'Ghul and his League of Assassins. She had tried to establish herself in Bludhaven but she returned to find it destroyed, all her acquaintances and a budding romance lost with it. In the following years, she fell pray to Deathstroke and David Cain, who brainwashed her to become that which she had avoided: leader of the League of Assassins. She managed to break free and return to Batman, but she had to earn the trust of his extended family all over again.
When Batman "died" at the hands of Darkseid, she followed his previously set instructions and passed the mantle of Batgirl to her close friend, Stephanie Brown, and became Black Bat, working for Batman's plans in Hong Kong and later revealing herself as his agent for Batman, Inc.
She's quiet about the reasons for joining the Night Shift, as is her way, but there are lot of rumors going among other members of JLA that she is Batman's way of keeping an eye on the comings and goings of the Night Shift.
