The Crucible (First Time character creation)

Postby Llenlleawg » Thu Jul 12, 2012 7:24 pm

Hi there, Roll Call! Long-time lurker, first time to post!

Anyway, I thought I would see if I have character creation down for the 3e system, plus take whatever helpful hints you might give. Be gentle!

Haunted/Hunted: The covens of witches in Salem have long memories, and while Prescott may have done penance in the eyes of God, he has much to answer for from the world of witchcraft!

Abilities 36 Powers 74 Advantages 3 Skills 15 Defenses 22

Gideon Prescott was a scoundrel and a cheat in the Boston colony whose skills at getting his way ran out in the early 1690s. He fled to Salem Village where he used his skills at manipulating others to save his own life, but only at the expense of others he allowed to be falsely accused of witchcraft. Struck with remorse, Prescott fled into the wilderness where, exhausted, he encountered a luminous figure with the appearance of a young native woman. She assured him that he was not beyond forgiveness, and that if he would submit to the cleansing fires of Purgatory, he could return to the world to serve his fellow man. Prescott agreed, and he was subjected to the painful but purifying flames of Purgatory for hundreds of years.

When he reappeared on the earth, Prescott found that he could command the very fires which had cleansed him, to afflict both the bodies and the minds of the impenitent, to soothe and purify the ills of the afflicted, and to pass from place to place through Purgatory itself. Cleansed from his own wickedness, Prescott now sees the world truly, and there is nothing that can escape or be concealed from his sight, not even the mind itself. Refined by centuries of divine flame, his body has been toughened against all ordinary harm, including all fires no matter how hot, and no longer suffers the ravages of time.

Now, in a world quite different from his own, Prescott uses his gifts to afflict the sinful, comfort and defend the innocent, lead the guilty to repentance, and fight for the right as The Crucible!

For the "Purgatorial Fire" Power, I wanted to have fire attacks that (a) physically afflicted an enemy, including spirits, hence the blast affecting insubstantial, and (b) could also assault the soul, hence the "targets will" alternate effect. However, I wonder whether it would make better sense to treat this as a Mental Blast which just appears as spiritual fire. That would make the alternate power Mental Blast 6, would it not?

Any suggestions or feedback are welcome!

Both ways are valid, its all about your descriptors really. Seeing as your setting uses a more "supernatural" tone, you could use things such as spirit, and fire damage as your descriptors. As well as using the Affects Insubstantial, and Alternate save. But you can have such things as Spiritual Toughness saves, and Spiritual Will saves, its all a matter of flavor.

Your quite welcome. Remember that descriptor's trump mechanics. Some examples include.
Electricity, is grounded by rubber, but flows and disperses in water (area burst).
Sonics, travel farther underwater (increased range), but can be damped by insulation.
