Gail was just a typical teen in a tiny Midwest town. She played flute in the marching band, though asthma prevented her from practicing as much as she'd like, and Johnny Miller didn't seem to even know she existed.

Heading home from band practice one afternoon in midsummer, she quickened her pace as fat drops began to fall from a sky so dark with clouds you would have sworn it was nearly night. Wind gusts howled, and Gail began to run as a funnel cloud appeared on the horizon. Unable to outpace the storm, Gail was soon thrown to the ground as the world went black.

Gail awoke sometime later, injured, but alive. She stared with amazement as a light breeze caressed her skin, and her scratches closed up, her bruises fading to yellow. Gail recovered her flute, then stumbled through the wreckage, searching for other survivors. It wasn't long before she found one.

A man in a dark suit whom she recognized as the former funeral director was digging among the remains, stealing valuables from the dead. When Gail approached to confront him, she noticed he wasn't using any tool to dig, but was burrowing directly into the earth somehow. Scared, she tried to hide, but was too late. The thief had spotted her.

In her weakened condition, Gail was no match for the man, who quickly pinned her, then dragged her with him as he burrowed deep underground. Attempting to hide his crimes, he left her there, and collapsed the tunnel behind him. After struggling uselessly against the immense weight of dirt above her, Gail screamed out her last breath in a final panicked cry, and a blast of air shot through the earth, creating a tiny shaft to the surface. Shocked, Gail realized the hole provided just enough air to sustain her. She decided to remain hidden, enduring the virtual grave for as long as she could stand while she waited for the dark-suited villain to leave. Resting in the dark, Gail's physical recovery continued apace, until after a few hours, she decided to test her newfound powers to escape. The resulting maelstrom easily tore her free from the ground. Gail realized then that her old life was over.

Grateful for her survival, and determined to use her gifts for the greater good, Gail fled to the city. She rented a tiny apartment in a sketchy neighborhood, and supported herself by performing on street corners, or taking odd jobs scaling terrifying heights for construction crews. The papers were full of stories about brave superheroes and evil villains, including a dark-suited criminal called The Undertaker, whom she recognized as her attacker from back home. Inflicted with a severe case of claustrophobia from her ordeal, and never wanting to feel that helpless again, Gail bought a gun and shield to wear with her new costume and mask. Thus began her quest to bring evildoers to justice, as Gale Force Fury, Master of Wind!
