Catching a bullwhip

Postby selphil » Wed Mar 02, 2011 12:13 pm

Let's say that my super-villain fights with a bullwhip.

As he attacks a hero, could the hero try to grab the whip? How would you do it with the rules as written?

Is it a simple Disarm action?
Would the hero need super-speed?
Would the hero have to take a hold action?
Would the hero have to spend a hero point?
Would you not allow it, citing that the super-villain is trained well enough to weld a whip without giving a hero a chance to pull a stunt like that?

Just wondering how other GMs would handle the situation.

I would have the hero either Ready to grab the whip or use a Hero Point for the Instant Counter or Acton. At that point it would be a Disarm or pull the whip out of the attacker's hands.

If they're not in immediate melee range (and if so, what is the villain doing there? He's got a whip for crying out loud,) I agree with Mamba. Ready an action to grab the whip when the bad guy lashes out, or extra effort for the feat that lets you disarm when someone misses with an attack/instant counter, whatever. If the hero can actually get into melee range, I'd let him make a normal disarm attempt, as he grabs the whip by the handle.

So you'd let a hero make a Ready action, then when the villain attempted to lash at him, the hero makes a Disarm action?

Yes. That is what Ready does: it delays your normal turn to a point where you can react to whatever you Readied for: I am Readying a Disarm for when he hits me with the bullwhip. Since a bullwhip is just a Melee Attack with Extended Reach you treat it like a normal Disarm attempt.

Yeah! SassyRonin came through for me and worked it all. All is right in the universe now. :)
