In my warriors & warlocks or Lord of the rings games. Equipment is pretty much handwaved (per W&W rules). A character can have what is reasonable for their character, skills, and concept. I use equipment points, when a player wants something unique. As in my LOTR rules, to indicate minor objects of importance. Otherwise, I never hand out, what a character wont pay for.

But i miss the days, of actually being able to collect money. Its the whole essence of adventure. And thought equipment points could be traded in for a monetary value system.
