If you're down for that consider me interested. Once recruitment opens up I'll come up with a char and submit something.

You'd be the human character you start with. So no switching races for the initial 2-4 characters, down the road if a character died, or if a player retired, a new character could be brought in already native to the fantasy world. But I'd rather jump off that bridge when we get to it.

Aerlock wrote:P.S. Once you open up recruitment, are we to submit just the 30-40 point regular joe character or the changed character too?

The regular joe character, plus what you'd like the character to morph into. You wouldn't have to go into the minutiae of the character, but enough to state what it is that you'd want the character to become. Captain's example of "an arcane ranger who inscribes his arrows to achieve different effects" is good starting point, a little bit more detail.

I'll be pretty liberal with awarding Power Points so characters will level at a decent pace.

Yeah, that's an interesting one. I didn't allow clerics when I ran my previous game, but it was D&D so it was a lot more rigid than M&M.

But since this is no longer D&D, a god of this new world might want to choose a character as his/her/it's champion/avatar, the characters are special after all.

EDIT: I still need to determine if the game is going to be on an Alternate Earth, if so, than the religions of 1000 years ago would still be around, perhaps harnessing magic (or being the cause of magic), so being a cleric might be a bit of a touchy subject for some people in that regard. Then again, there's a Spanish Inquisition game going on here, so maybe not. :)

On another note, I'm at a client site for the next two days, so I'll only be around at night. If anyone has any questions/comments, please feel free to post them and I'll get to them when I get home from work tomorrow (or on my iPhone if it's a short answer).

I guess it depends on what you mean by Paragon/Super Soldier. Elite fighter with a weapon of choice, then yes. But since this is a fantasy world, the typical "superhero" paragon wouldn't work. I'm not 100% sold on the confidence thing, I'm not sure it really make sense, but it's late and I haven't really had a chance to think about it to be honest.

I'll have to edit the open post, but I things like Battle Suits, Gadgets, Paragons (Superman types that is), traditional Speedsters, etc. just won't work in this setting. That doesn't mean that you can't take some of their aspects and use them.

In the Lord of the Rings movies for example (not everyone's favorite, but I imagine everyone's at least seen it), Aragorn can't fly or shoot lasers out of his eyes, but he's a ridiculously good fighter (probably got a lot of skills, advantages, and perhaps a bit of powers thrown in there plus his sword might be a devise). Gandolf has powers, but at the same time he can also fight hand to hand if he needs to. The Legolas has some innate powers (like how he can walk on the snow and camouflage) mixed in with skills and advantages.

Something like that would definitely fly as a 30pp starting point.

Although, I would like to have at least one or two characters at least adhere close to the traditional "fantasy" characters. Players can (and I hope would) put their own twist on them of course, but I'd hate to get a bunch of submissions and not have one character who wants to hit something with a sword/mace/axe or blast something with a fireball. :)

Sounds a bit like that character could turn into a bit of a "monk" (using the broad fantasy meaning that is anything remotely mystical from the East), which could be a great support (via healing)/close combat specialist.

Ya, probably more super soldier than paragon. Heightened physical abilities, low grade super strength and speed, and maybe just a pinch of regeneration. No flying or heat vision or anything like that.

Arrows?

Expert archer/wilderness expert whom has learned a magic runic language and can inscribe the runes onto arrows fired.
- Traditional "fantasy" character with a twist.

I'll come up with a cool 2012 character that doesn't play to the stereotypical ranger-to-be.

A Ranger type is fine, because they can beat the snot out of something with a sword or a bow when it is needed.

Also, please don't read too much into my "stereotypical" comment. My main point was that a magic user didn't have to be some bookworm, and a fighter didn't need to be a dumb jock because there are plenty of variations of both those archetypes that play against type. A "magic user" could have innate abilities to command the elements that has nothing to do with book learning and instead might be physically quite impressive, a fighter might be a sneaky, rogue type fighter (the Man in Black from Princess Bride for example) who is as conniving as (s)he is deadly.

But if someone wants to play a big ass barbarian wielding a huge axe, that's very cool as well, I just didn't want people to think that they HAD to.

At the end of the day, if you have a fantasy setting I think you at least need a few people who are playing "traditional" roles (someone good with a weapon, someone who can cast a spell, perhaps a healer).

EDIT: I'm going to ditch the ranger concept and go with a Wonder Woman style amazonian warrior. She'll probably use the bow and sword equally (with a leaning towards the sword), and still have the runic spells, but not so much wilderness/survival stuff. Makes it much easier to figure a 2012 persona for, and gives you a sword-swinger.

Darn! I had a half an idea of a character that is slowly developing the racial characteristics of one of the native races and has to adjust to that in addition to the whole world being different. Guess I'll see if I can come up with something else now.

You don't have to worry about the 2012 character being tied so closely to what they eventually will become. In the case of a Ranger, it could be someone who's physical and interested in the out doors (they like camping a lot or something). The initial character is PL 2, so even if a character has never used a certain weapon before, they can get to the cap on it with just a few Power Points anyway after their first adventure. Hell, depending on the weapon damage and their STR and FTG/DEX stats, they'll probably be at the cap already without spending a single additional point.

I'm thinking shapeshifter. Backtrack that to 2012 she's probably someone who just enjoys pretending to be someone else. Anyone else. Just for fun, not as some sort of mental hang-up. Actor, RPGer, MMO player. Translates into the innate magic of being able to change her appearance and take on other physical forms such as animals.
