Just read the 3e hero SRD about Unreliable. The description is that EVERY round that you use the power, you have to roll the reliability check. Alternately you can choose to have five uses of the power. Since a continuous power would have to roll each round with the first option, it would stand to follow that the second option negates the need for a roll five times and then the power is no longer usable till the next day.

Vashyk Blackthorn is the youngest of his family. Growing up in a nomadic tribe, each member of the tribe was expected to contribute according to their talents. Role in the tribe was determined at the coming of age ceremony on a child’s thirteenth birthday. Being guided by the tribe elder, the child would under take a vision quest to learn their role, which would correspond to an elemental affinity. Mountains were the protectors of the tribe. Forests were the providers and caretakers. Rivers were the diplomats and healers. Fires were the crafters. Winds were the scouts and explorers. The methods applied to overcome the obstacles encountered in the quest would determine the child’s role, as well as sometimes reveal their totem animal. Occasionally, those who had a particularly strong connection to their totem or their elemental role would manifest abilities tied to them. These children would usually complete their quest fairly quickly, the average quest taking from dusk until dawn. Vashyk was done in an hour.

Having grown up with a father who was a forest-walker, and three older brothers that were also forest walkers, Vashyk assumed that he would be one as well. To everyone’s astonishment, Vashyk was the first wind strider in the Blackthorn line. Although eventually it made perfect sense. He was slight of build while his brothers were built like, well, trees. While his brothers would hunt with guile and woodcraft, Vashyk was a natural born archer and could move like the wind, catching his pray unaware. After his vision quest, the differences were all too clear. Within a month, Vashyk’s it seemed that the winds were guiding Vashyk’s arrows. Within a year, his eyes had started to change subtly, looking more and more like those of his totem; a hawk. Eighteen months after the ceremony, he could be seen leaping from trees and soaring short distances, carried on the wind instead of falling. Vashyk loved the freedom, embracing each new ability as he continued to practice all of the hunting tips his father had taught him.

Then came the day when he was out tracking fairly vicious bear that had killed a few of the tribe’s goats a week before. It had taken three days, but he was sure that he was getting close. Then the darkness came. Vashyk dropped where he stood, completely unconscious. When he awoke, he had no idea how long he had been out, be it an hour or a day. Moving at a break neck pace, he made it back to where the tribe had last made camp. There was nothing. Vashyk panicked. He was sure he was in the right spot, wasn’t he? For the first time, he was totally alone, and he was scared…

Motivation: Tribal Loyalty- Vashyk is driven almost exclusively by the desire to locate his tribe. The complete lack of tracks completely freaks him out, and he will follow any lead, no matter how tenuous to find his family.

Complication: As the youngest brother, and having different gifts than his older siblings, Vashyk can be a bit of a show off. He loves letting everyone know just how good of an archer he is…

Curiosity : Nala is the sort of person who would go into a dark cave just to see what's in there. (Actually, she has a very good idea of what IS in there, but likes to confirm hypotheses.)

Quirk : No Such Thing as 'Forbidden Knowledge'. As a cleric of Logos (Spirit of Knowledge), she tends to ignore such petty and mortal declarations about knowledge - what is 'forbidden' to some is 'necessary and right' to others.

Responsibilities : whenever the University needs a rumor checked out, or a rare item located or returned, or a mystery investigated, she gets the call.

Responsibilities (Family business) : Nala's family has a fair bit of money. They'd like to keep it that way, so they have her check the books every now and again.

Background :
Nala is the eldest child of Gareth and Annelise, brewers and sellers of fine liquors. They have many different recipes for their various malts, so they spent a lot of time travelling to procure ingredients while Nala was growing up.

From that, she developed an interest in nature, and learned what plants were good for (besides flavoring malts and source of sugar for fermenting), and then an intense interest in understanding the natural world. She had a talent for art, which she used to draw images of all the 'odd beasts' her family ran across during their travels. She spent much of her formative years in the wilds, studying all that lived there (rather easy to do since her family was having a monetary crisis, and stayed with Annelise's father for a few years until they could get back on their feet).

Her curiosity (and need to see things first hand) held her in good stead when her parents enrolled her in the university to further her schooling - the scholars there were compiling the most complete bestiary known at the time, and she noted a few discrepancies.

One creature had three different descriptions - NONE OF WHICH WERE ACCURATE !

Knowing that people tend to exaggerate now and then, she deduced that most of the information in the books was probably incomplete at best, wildly inaccurate at worst.

But, then again, there WERE many truly strange and unusual creatures in the world, so she couldn't simply write off all the odder and more bizarre descriptions as mere stories either.

So she volunteered to track down a few of the creatures and bring back accurate data.

Thanks to years of selflessly trying to learn more about the world, Logos (a spirit of Knowledge) granted her some of its powers. Even some of her usual skills have been boosted to superhuman levels - she was always able to draw well, but now she could summon images more accurate and mobile than anything she could ever do with just ink and pencils.

Kinda sounds more like a nature-y spirit would be appropriate. But it works. Tanzza looks forward to meeting her.

Ewgar began life born to a Gnomeish gypsy couple, at the age of 4 months his families caravan was overrun while traveling in the north by a tribe of Barbarians, the Batavi.

The man leading the raid, Thogar found Ewgar under the decapitated body of his mother. He took pity on the infant, having just lost his own newborn son and took the boy home to his Grieveing wife.

Ewgar grew up bullied and abused. He became fierce and reactionary and worked hard at being a fighter. When he reached "Adulthood" he managed the trial of surviving a month alone in the wilds of his now homelands.

The tribe never fully accepted him, but used him often in night raids due to his natural stealth and ability to see int he dark. He won a rough respect, but he could never find a wife as the tribes women found him repulsive. A week after his mother died, he left the tribe to make his way in the world...

Ewgar has wandered the world, selling his ferocity and seeking challenges and wenches since.

Complications:
Motivation: (Duty) Investigating the sudden darkness blanketing the land are his orders and he intends to see them through diligently. Lucius is a good solider and a paragon if his House's ideology, being steadfast, loyal and strong. "et colabit melius", "Refine and Improve."

Magical Disruption: Due to the exceptionally powerful affinity to arcane magic infusing him, magic can sometimes have a weird and unintended effect when cast on Lucius as his arcane power distorts the magical power fueling spells cast on him. Some examples include a sudden increase in power, a change in the properties of the spell, the effect changing completely to something else. What happens is usually appropriate to the context of magic used, arcane spells usually get stronger or their effects get skewed, nature spells often become dark, twisted versions of themselves, tainted by arcane power, divine magic has been known to have explosive, just as examples.

Black Thumb: Touching smaller plants causes them to wilt and die. Larger plant life shows signs of decay where touched. Fruit doesn't go bad, but does taste somewhat bad. Creatures attuned to nature can generally sense this 'aura' about him caused by his arcane power and don't take terribly kindly to him being around where he could hurt nature, even unintentionally.

Background:
Lucius Atius Regulus is the first Regulii in generations to be born with the affinity for magic in a noble house that was once known for strong mages, spell-swords and military tacticians. These days they are known simply as a strong military family, but with Lucius' birth, that seems to be turning around, though it's almost as though all the magical potential of the last generations was dammed up and imbued entirely into Lucius.

Seen as the hope for the Regulus family to return to their former glory, there was much time and effort put into his education and training, which resulted in Lucius making a name for himself in the military of his kingdom, and even becoming a knight Cursor, a sort of special agent sent to investigate situations in the kingdom's lands, sometimes discreetly performing darker orders.

When darkness covered the land, Lucius packed his bag and checked his gear, knowing he would be sent to investigate and that this could be a long mission indeed.
