Age of Heroes (Interest)

Postby roguescribner » Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:50 am

I want to participate in another game here in the ATT. Since I wasn't recruited in the last game I took interest in, I decided to focus instead on running one. I ran one game before that had its good and bad points. The bad points I mostly take upon myself (I was a first time pbp GM), so I'm hoping to have learned some lessons for this next attempt. The core seed of this idea was to come up with a cool one-shot adventure idea. Except, my brain doesn't really work well in one-shot adventure concepts. I always think too big, even when I'm trying to think small. ;) But I really held onto the one-shot idea because one of the biggest killers of games here is player attrition. I suffered it in the last game I ran and unfortunately the story was constructed in such a way it was nigh impossible to introduce new blood. So what to do?

Then it hit me: the game could be a series of linked one-shots. This would allow the flexibility of introducing new players and/or rebooting every so often while letting me tell a larger story. Win-win!

So here is the concept I came up with:

This game will be a superhero anthology of sorts. Anyone who has played Assassin's Creed will be familiar with the format. There will be a series of "flashbacks" that chronicle the birth and development of superhuman beings throughout history that are linked by a larger story that takes place in the future. So each installment will take place in a different region and time period allowing previous players to continue on if they wish or we run a whole new recruitment. Characters may or may not carry over from installment to installment, but players certainly could. I think it's a way of keeping things fresh while keeping the game as flexible as possible to introduce new players. The whole thing would culminate in a large scale adventure that will (hopefully) tie all the threads from the previous installments into a nice little bow.

So my first installment I think would take place in Ancient Egypt. Everyone would start out humans who later develop powers. In the remainder of the installments, everyone would begin with powers already. Genres may vary from chapter to chapter. Power level and power points would certainly vary from installment to installment depending on the needs of the story. The final installment will obviously be high PL to account for what's come before.

I've already started plotting out adventure ideas and timelines, but before I get too heavy into it, I would like to know if there's interest in a game like this? If so, I'll open up a recruitment thread sometime after the holidays. I think the game has to be 2E just because I don't think I know enough about 3E to run a game with it.

Let me know.

Sounds like it could be fun depending on the specifics.

I was really disappointed when The Extraordinaries folded. It was a great concept and a lot of fun. It was also a game with a complicated plot and timeline, and as a GM you proved that you can manage high concept. There was a lot of enthusiasm (seems to me we hit 17 pages in under 48 hours) and I have no idea where all the players slinked off too.

...that is to say, colour me interested. I'm in 3 games with Red Bstrd right now, but his demanding schedule means that they are moving slowly, and I need more to do with my ATT time. I have looked at joining other games, but either they were a concept I had no interest in, or I didn't have a good idea to submit. A game like this, if a particular scene isn't "for me" I can either tough it out for a bit, or sit it out.

I can't express interest, but hopefully I can help by stating I know exactly how you feel. You've come up with a good solution as far as I am concerned.

(The other way would be to do a "pilot": like a pilot episode for a TV show the storyline itself would assume some continuing on of the characters and their adventures but meta-wise there's no guarantee.)

This sounds like a very cool idea.
Life is what happens while I am busy gaming.
I use DCA, unless I state otherwise, all my posts are for DCA. I assume that 3ed is the same, but might be wrong in specific areas.

After being gone for so long, I have returned and am interested in this game. Making mutli Characters that connect to other characters (maybe not my own) seem like a very good and very orginal idea. You have my interest.

cool idea but I struggle making one character let alone an ongoing string of them unless you go for the old immortality thing. Although a character who reflected the age he was in would be cool.

Is it seriously 2e? If it is I am out. Sold my 2e books after getting 3e. Being the new edition (and better in my opinion) I got rid of the older one.
