DC Universe Online inspired game [OOC]

Postby Belial666 » Sun Apr 01, 2012 4:08 am

What the title says. The base premise is that of the eponymous game; Braniac attacks and overcomes Earth's defenses by stealing the powers of less-known metahumans plus all the power potential on Earth while the big-league heroes and villains are busy fighting eachother. Lex Luthor survives, manages to steal Brainiac's supply of stored power potential and uses a time-travel device to go back in time, warn the Justice League and unleash the stored power potential in Earth's atmosphere, causing rapid development of powers in a portion of the population. So when Brainiac arrives and tries to do his usual shenanigans, hundreds of new metahumans all over the world begin to oppose him. That said, the game story will by no means be the same after the beginning.

Character Creation:

1) PL 10

2) Make a PL 2 civilian with 30pp from before your character got his/her powers. Point out what comes from it in your final sheet.

3) Pick an archetype or niche for your character. I.e. you should be very good in covering one group role but don't try to cover everything because a) it can't be done and b) I want to be able to have moments where each character can shine in turn. The archetypes are those in the manual. The niches are tank/striker/blaster/controller/buffer/projector for combat and social/subterfuge/scouting/science/supernatural for noncombat.

3) Add powers and improvements due to powers to your civilian identity till you hit PL 10 and 180pp. (i.e. 150 more power points)

PL 10, but with increased points was my original thought. You can build almost every DC hero and villain in fairly low PL but you can't build even half of them with 15pp per power level. I.e. Superman can easily be PL12 and even be within the suggested tradeoff of 50% (PLx1.5 strength/toughness = 18) but building him in less than 220 points is problematic and you need as many as 250 for an iconic build.

Will this be 3e rules? Definitely interested, and will think of a character.

I'll throw in my hat for interest. I do agree with the notion of increased power points as well.

The cinematic trailer for DCUO is quite amazing. I also think that the backstory explaining why there are suddenly thousands and thousands of super beings running around the world is also a genius. The followup brings a bit more depth to the story. At first I was wondering which DC Character is hanging out with Lex... but then I realized it's not a canon character -it's a "New Hero."

As for character types, each player receives an Exobyte, which contains a specific power set... so everything has to fit into a limited power descriptor. Of course, the Exobyte thing does get a bit hand-wavy about all the Green Lanterns and Gadgeteers running around.

I always saw it as receiving a couple exobytes at random. I.e. a "random" combination of powers. That would fit a dispersal through the atmosphere and with the game allowing you to pick many powers.
