Island of the Dead [3e recruiting]

Postby Belial666 » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:08 am

OK, this idea came from a game I played about a year ago. The campaign is as follows; the PCs are fairly common - but very capable - people in a new tropical resort in the Pacific. Some of them are there as tourists to enjoy the scenery. Others might be staff or security. Others still might be there for business of some sort. Whatever is the case, after a night of especially wild partying, they wake up to find the unthinkable has happened; there's a zombie outbreak over the entire island!!! The PCs now have to survive, find temporary safety then find a way out of the island or some other permanent end to their problems... of which the zombie outbreak is the least of.

I am seeing PL as 4-5, with PCs built on 60 pp. They then get 20 pp worth of powers after the intro is done.

I was just talking about zombies yesterday. I think this would be fun.

I'd play.

Any ideas on the rules for zombie-ism? Get the blood on you and turn? Have to get bitten? Not going to tell us? :)

It's 3rd edition. As for the rules of becoming zombies, finding out is half the fun. After all, your characters would have all read zombie books/comics, played zombie games or seen zombie movies at least once in-character. It would be fun to have them speculating.

Also, regarding character ideas, I see PL 4-5 as very powerful normals, the very peak of human achievement. After all at that PL, one could lift 800-1600 lbs without being strength-shifted. Similarly, an ability score of 4-5 is really world class and is pushing "best ever" territory.
In the game that gave me the idea, the available characters included a discharged SWAT officer playing security, a rapidly rising gangster there on vacation, a fireman/demolitions expert, an asian martial artist that might or might not have Yakuza ties and so on - all characters that would survive the initial zombie outbreak where the masses of average Joes and Janes did not.

Interested in this. Maybe a CIA operative on mandatory R&R.

Hmm...I'll try to come up with something that isn't cliché (combat ops, thug and such). I liked High School of the Dead, they were kinda the survivor material of their school, all either tough, smart or martial arts experts (loved Rei and Saiko).

Maybe the character no one wants to let die, like a doctor...maybe too boring. I like fighting. I'll probably do something along the lines of Rei and Saiko. Karate-hottie that's a little young compared to the rest of the group, though not high school jail bait.

What is the infrastructure of the island like? Is is a real place?

Only asking because I was thinking of placing my character in college, and if the island was big enough to support a thriving city she could live there, going to school in the city and working at the hotel where the "party" takes place.

I'd like to try this. It sounds alot like Dead Island, though. Anyway, I was thinking of a sceptical and practical medical doctor that trained as a boxer in his youth and uses a shotgun. I will think of a more expanded background for recruitment.

And what is the PL going to be? A 4 or 5? Other than that, full interest from me.

Evolución, that is badass. For some reason I was thinking "make a hero." Never considered that a villain is just as viable.

Very cool!

Thanks! I thought a morally dark/grey character would spice things up. It's not bad enough to have undeath after you, you still have to drag the old bone sack that keeps injecting you with stuff!

Color me interested. I love zombie fiction.

Are we talking hordes of slow zombies as the norm (Romero) or zombies that suddenly become Olympic athletes (Snyder)?

PL is 4 before powers. It will jump to 5 once you get powers.

The island is a small-sized (about a score miles long and a half-dozen miles wide) isolated tropical paradise in the Pacific. It has lots of jungle and mountainous terrain and lots of beaches and crystal-clear waters. Used to be a military facility in the early Cold War (though few know of that fact) that has been abandoned for a good forty years. It got turned into a massive tropical resort American-style only in the last three or four years. There is an old village to the north since its first settlement decades ago - small brick houses and even smaller port, no more than a couple thousand people - with an old lighthouse as its only landmark of note. Most of the island's beaches sport extensive hotel complexes that act as centers for the island's nightly parties, having all the dance floors, cinemas, restaurants and bars and shops and other forms of recreation but only about a third of the island's visitors actually live in those complexes. The other two thirds are spread in bungalows and small motels, camping sites and very authentic (not!) colony-style farms all over the island, where visitors can enjoy the "wild" and "natural" side of life without being too far from the comforts of civilization. A much smaller part of the population can be found in the island's one ski resort, on the slopes of the island's tallest mountain, overlooking the island's east from two miles up. The only two ways to reach that ski resort are the three aerial tramways connecting it to the three biggest hotel complexes and a tortuously steep and hard path through the mountains. The only installation higher than the ski resort is a large array of radar dishes dating back to the 60's, part of the now-abandoned military complex (which few people know about and even fewer care) overlooking the resort from a good half-mile higher, well into the islands' perpetual snow zone.

The zombies you'll encounter will come in several types, most common (and usually least dangerous) of which will be the slow zombies. You will encounter more than zombies though, in the typical Resident Evil fashion - though less "biochemical nightmare" and more in a "supernatural evil" kind of way. And the powers you'll gain will be tied to this, of course.

The powers you'll gain as soon as the intro is out will resemble (but not be the same as) various legends of evil/undead creatures you may have heard of so consider what flavor of powers you'd like to gain. Ghoul, vampire, loup-garou, wraith, wight, banshee and the like are all good flavors/inspirations. That does not mean you'll actually be such creatures - only that your powers will be similar. I want to keep the "how" and "why" of you gaining powers as a secret for now though you can plan on the "what" you want to gain of course.
