Benefit ?

Postby budlink » Wed May 30, 2012 8:51 am

Benift is a thing I always enjoyed. My question is for Benefits such as (King of Atlantis, Ruler of Apokolapse, ETC) what is the judge for how high they should be. The reason I am asking is an awkward thing happened during my session. I wanted the group to investigate the disappearance of Lex Luther. One of the characters who has a large ego and is a bit of a prankster turned into Lex without the rest of the group knowing and thanked the world for that hero finding him. The group had no reason to believe that was not the real Lex so they I told them to treat the case as if it was solved. Then the fake Lex (who is currently giving all his own personal profits to charity) sold Lex Tower (Not the corporation) to another hero in the squad who is a billionaire at a discount. My question is what is the benefit for owning Lex Tower and eventually the Corporation? Can you even take the advantage of Benefit for that?

Well, if they other player was already a billionaire, that's basically one additional rank of Wealth, right? Which they wouldn't really be able to take advantage of (if you want an excuse, say that the transfer is tied up in court or the government is insisting on reassessments to ensure proper taxation) until they spend that additional power point for that benefit.

There's also some benefit from it being Luther's company, but I suspect that that will be counterweighed by all the trouble it brings from enemies (and allies!) of Luther to how Luther is bound to react when he comes back (and it's almost certain that this will come to roost, including the suspicious attempt to launder the stolen goods by turning them over to a teammate).

I appologize. I realize now I could have worded my question better. What would be a reasonable rank for (Benefit Owner of Lex Tower). I had no intent to make her character more wealthy. She is renovating it to be her own building but I figure there has to be some benefit to owning Lex Tower (Mainly Hidden technologies to be found and owning a status symbol of Metropolis). For me its hard to judge such benefits because ownership or ruler benefits (Such as King of Atlantis, or Ruler of Apokolipis) have no defined advantages or written befits you can receive from such ownership in the book. To simplify the question ,I guess I am asking is (What do people think are reasonable standards of ranking ownership benefits?)

It seems to me that Benefit would be less applicable than buying Lex Tower as a headquarters/lair. The rules for doing so are in the book.

We had already built Headquarters around the world. Lex Corp was added to the list of locations.

Personally.. I'd let this particular case be story driven.. Don't charge benefit points (at least, not yet)..
Eventually, Lex is going to get free.. And he's gonna want his home back.. At that point, if anything, I'd make ownership of the tower a complication. Having one of the smartest, wealthiest and most ruthless men on the planet gunning for my head on a pike could very well be worth a hero point or so.

Additionally, as far as what that benefit would get you.. The old adage of 'you get what you pay for' fits the bill quite nicely. If you are going to use the tower as an excuse for players to spend points on new tech for their characters, make it cost 1-2 pts.. If they are going to get a ton of prestige for owning it, maybe another point. If they make some contacts, add points there too. It's all in what they are going to use it for, and how far you're going to let them take it... Don't charge them 2pts and let them walk out the front door with a rifle that could drop Superman, or fly out the roof with the super space ship that also travels through time and can make instant snow comes.. Just my thoughts.. The actual RAW rule is very loose.

Rather than charging for the tower ask how much the players want to pay for it. That way you can gauge how much they think its worth, and thus how important it is to the story/plot/game.
