Can you apply the Removable modifier to Variable?

Postby TheManagement » Fri Jun 15, 2012 12:22 pm

Let's say you have the power:

• Variable (Technological gadgetry) 5 (limitation:Slow, requires return to lab)

Now this is a 35 point power, but with slow, it would be reduced to 30. If all devices built were to be considered removable, could you also apply the Removable limitation for a PP total of 25?

It works either way.

With removable, if one of your devices is taken away or broken, you lose access to it and the points it takes up till you go through the procedure to replace/reclaim a removable device.

Without removable, the ability costs more. But if one of your devices is taken away or broken, you can simply rearrange your points with a return to the lab and thus get another device (or recreate the same one).

There is no reason why Variable could not have removable. It would cost 24 points for removable or 18 points for easily removable.

Cool... that means that with prep-time and tech, if he puts all of his Variable points into powerlifting, my PL 12 Superman can lift 2trillion tons!!! :D

How do you justify "removable" for Superman's powers - or slow for that matter?

Easy... my Superman is a pretty standard PL12 paragon, but he has his pre-crisis brilliance and in dire situations where his standard powerset isn't enough, he has a pool of variable points that he can apply to build devices and boost his powers.

you could design a green lantern ring that way. Instead of all that stuff listed, just give it Variable, and its a ring that is Removable.

But if so, then the GM can in fact remove it. How hard is that? Depends on what type of removable you take.

If it requires you be incapacitated, then it is harder, but honestly, it will happen from time to time to a character.

My Green Lantern is a bit different. He's Alan Scott, but instead of a ring, he carries and oriental looking paper-lanter on the end of a pole (similar to the Tangent GL).

He's quite possibly the most powerful being on the planet... turned imortal by the green flame, he weilds the power of the starheart.

With removable, even though individual gadgets can be easily removed, the whole power set can't be. To do that the gadgeteer needs to be frisked down to remove all the hidden tools and modules used to cobble together new gadgets.

With easily removable, the gadgeteer is carrying a literal bag of tricks from which to pull gadgets.

Wouldn't that mean that it CAN be removable though? If he were incapacitated, and then trapped, he wouldn't be able to access that power unless he were able to find the lost gear, or escape and get back to his lab to build more.

Right, that's eaxctly what Greyman is saying. That if you have Removable Variable, even if someone, say, disarms you of a gadget, you have more.

With Easily Removable Variable, if you get Disarmed, you lose your Variable.

That is a good point. Removable used to be called "Hard to Lose," and meant that you couldn't simply be disarmed of your toy. Removable works the same way. It can't actually be stuff you can lose easily. It's stuff you can simply forget to have brought, or once you're stopped from fighting someone can take some time to strip off you.

So yeah, if you get disarmed of a certain gadget from a simply "Removable" variable, you can just make a new one. It's not 'til it's "Easily" removable that they can just kick it right out of your hand and remove it entirely. Difference between a magic sword and Iron Man's armor ;)
