Looking for suggestions: Feints and Fencing

Postby kurtoogle » Thu Aug 23, 2012 1:49 pm

I have noticed that many of the House Rules include Advantages / Feats such as Improved Feint and Fast Feint. Essentially these advantages reduce the Deception: Feint skill check from a standard action to a movement action. Is there a legit way (without House rules) to make this happen beyond taking the -5 penalty to change the standard action to a movement action.

Additionally, I have players interested in playing a swashbuckler game, but are used to games which allow parry attacks, fast and multiple attacks or deception actions (feint, trick, taunt, redirect). Can you suggest powers or advantage combinations that would allow a character to do deception actions and attacks in the same round, or anything like parrying and riposting.

I fear that such combat actions may simply come down to embellished descriptions of regular combat.

You can already make feints as a move action under the RAW. You just take a -5 penalty. I think that penalty is what the Advantages get rid of.

Deflect, particularly with the Redirect extra, works well for a defensive fighting technique, with a sort of 'parry and riposte.' You could also try Reaction Damage (unsuccessful melee attack).

Multiattack (possibly with Variable Descriptor 1: Any melee weapon) works for rapid attacks.

For some 'deception' type powers...
  • Cunning Step: Teleport 1, Limited: must be able to traverse terrain normally. Possibly with a Deception check required, or Resistible: Insight (for the "aha!" I'm suddenly behind you!" moment)
  • Feint: Close Affliction X, Limited Degree (Vulnerable, Defenseless). Possibly with Instant Recovery and linked to Strength-based damage.
  • Taunt: Ranged Affliction X, Double Limited Degree (Impaired), Sense-based (hearing). Possibly as a Reaction to an unsuccessful attack.

Check out the Talent power profile for some more ideas.
