Green Lanterns and Melee

Postby BL2814 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 6:54 pm

Hey, everyone! I'm somewhat new here. I got to thinking about something last night, so I thought I'd ask here. Suppose (for whatever reason), Hal decides to engage in melee with an opponent instead of hanging back and creating flying boxing gloves all day. If he creates, say, a sword construct with his ring, does that require a Power Stunt (since his writeup indicates ranged damage)? Is the construct treated like a regular sword in terms of damage output and critical threat range, or could he put the full force of his will behind it and create a sword that does 18+Strength damage? Supposing he had ranks in both Close Combat: Swords and Close Combat: Power Ring, could he choose which one to use when trying to hit?

I can think of two ways to do this:
A) Just use your Ranged Damage attack in close range and simply describe it as him forming a sword to attack with. This would not change the attack in any way: no sword-like properties, it still uses his ranged combat skill and still uses the target's dodge not their parry, ect..
B) Power Stunt a new power. Make it a close damage effect maybe add Improved Crit if you want, you can even stunt close combat skill (or just make the attack with a number of Accurate extras).

Option A doesn't really sit well with me; I mean, it's technically allowable within the rules, but it just feels wrong somehow. B could work, though.

On another note, does it bother anyone else that the writeup for a GL power ring doesn't include the Quick Change feature?

There are plenty of little flaws with the official builds, and Green Lantern is no exception. Kyle Rayner should definitely have Precise on his Create, for one thing.

I do like how they made Sinestro and Hal Jordan equals in hand to hand combat without their rings. One of my earliest exposures to GL comics was Hal's final battle on Oa before he became Parallax. Retcons have spoiled most of the original fun, but the idea of them both ditching their rings and fighting hand to hand, to the death, was awesome.

As for the question at hand, Murkglow's option A is what I endorse, and is how I think GL should function. Energy Sword, boxing glove, ACME atomizer, missile launcher, its all a function of his Blast powers (which should have Variable Descriptor).
