Heroes
Superman (rev 1.1)
Superman is the first hero to have publically declared himself. That isn't to say he's the first person to be performing superheroics, but he's certainly a big shiny example of that. This would have been approximately two years ago as of the start of the game. In that times he's stopped a few experiments gone wrong in Metropolis and helped out with natural disasters and human suffering (specifically in several civil wars) the world over. He's generally seen as a force for good, although that doesn't mean everbody trusts him. He's also declared that his in point of fact an alien; suffice to say that has some people wondering what he's actually up to (like Lex Luthor, and other assorted nasty types).
Clark is still the farm boy from Kansas. He still works at the Daily Planet, in the two years he's been there he went from copy editor to the Planet's primary science reporter. Instead of being kind of clumsy and buffonish Clark is more nerdy and geek like. He likes RPGs, Discovery Channel, and finds NASA the best thing since sliced bread (this despite the fact that he can fly to Mars himself, and did once right after graduating high school, Martha and Johnathan still have the handful of sand he brought home). He acts unsure of himself and his own opinions or even what he knows, despite the fact he's almost always right. The science beat is what puts him onto Luthor being into shady stuff.
Clark graduated from the Unveristy of Kansas with a major in english and a minor in journalism. After graduating Clark travelled through much of Euope, Asia and Arfica hoping to find his place in the world. He backpacked across Europe, took the Trans-Siberian Railroad from Moscow to Beijing and walked the length of the Great Wall of China. During his travels in Africa Clark joined the Peace Corps and took a position teaching english to school children. Clark was a natural born teacher, he was kind and showed them respect that many of them had never known. He finally thought he'd found his calling, he would be a teacher. He could return to Smallville, and teach english in highschool. That all ended when civil war rolled through the village, Clark did his best to stop the villages from being hurt but even a man able to move faster than a speeding bullet can't move faster than all of them. The guerillas took nearly two dozen children with them when they fled.
Clark followed the guerillas that had attacked the village. There was nothing that they could do to stop his white hot fury. He turned guns into slag metal, crushed vehicles with is bear hands, he finally found their leader. He could have killed the man, but he didn't. He held the life of the man in his grasp and all he could think of was telling his father that he killed a man in revenge. Johnathan Kent would have said a man deserves a second chance, that even monsters have souls. Johnathen Kent saved the life of a monster that day, and continues to save the life of monsters every day since.
Batman
Batman has been operating in Gotham for roughly five years as of the start of the game. He's definitely the urban legand Batman though. He rarely deals with the police (Commissioner Gordon has had a few shadowy meetings with him over the years), and makes it a point to never leave evidence he exists. His efforts aren't entirely successful and a few Batarangs or very blurry images of him have popped up over the years, but he's in the same league as the sasquatch as far as hard evidence goes. His primary target has been organized crime, but they're starting to get desparate and turning to the likes of costumed maniacs (ie. the Joker and other members of the rogue's gallery).
So as usual Bruce Wayne's parents are killed in a mugging. Bruce is eight at the time. He graduates from high school, and eventually Princeton. He's going to law school but disappears in half way through the second year leaving his inhertiance, Alfred and his best friend Harvey Dent behind. He reappeasr seven years later and refuses to talk about what happened. Batman begins operating about a year after Bruce Wayne's reappearance. He's currently one of the richest men in the world, his only rivals are foreign princes, a monobranded middle aged Briton, and Lex Luthor.
During Wayne's seven years away Harvey Dent had become Gotham's DA and the mob has really managed to get a strangle hold on the city. Once Wayne reappears Batman sightings start to crop up, fuzzy video show a black shape, and the occasional odd look boomerang are found. In essence the seven years away make up Batman's training and whatever other stuff I feel like including such as Ras al'Ghul.
Robin
Dick Grayson was an up an coming action movie star. Gotham's hero, the local boy that founds incredible success. At the age of 21 he'd already headlined two moderately successful features and was set to star in biggest blockbuster of the year. That is until Gotham's mob though Dick owed them something for his success, being from Gotham City and all. So they arranged a car accident to make a point, an accident that killed both of Dick's parents outside of Los Angeles restaurant. His movie scrapped, likely due to more mob tampering, Dick returned to Gotham and started making inquiries; using his money to hire investigators to find the people responsible Dick got more and more information. He even managed to beat a few thugs up using his martial arts skills. Unfortunately, Dick was getting too close, so the mob sent a hit squad after him. Batman save the young man, the two teamed up and Dick Grayson became Robin, assembling his costume from bits and pieces of wardrobe from his recently scrapped movie.
Dick Grayson was given a job in media relations with Wayne Enterprises, and currently resides with Bruce Wayne at the palatial Wayne Manor. Current rumours in the tabloids suggest the thirty-five year old Wayne in a relationship with the much younger Grayson (the implication is similar to how everybody that mattered knew Rock Hudson was gay, but he still showed up at events with women). Neither do anything to particularly dissaude this notion, Batman is too driven to care and it gives him a better cover and Dick is so used to tabloid rumours that it doesn't bother him.
Flash
The Flash is Barry Allen, member of Keystone City's forensics team. Barry has a master's degree in forensic sciences that he got on a scholar ship to Keystone University. However, in his last year he was injured during a one hundred metre sprint he was about to win; due to the injury Barry walks with a cane. During the lead up to the campaign Barry undergoes an experimental biochemical rejuvination process at the behest of his uncle Jay Garrick. The process repairs Barry's leg, and gives him the powers we're all familiar with. Garrick has also designed a suit that makes sure that Barry wont kill himself with own powers (make him immune to friction type stuff).
Jay Garrick did create a suit in the 70s that allowed is wearer to move with astonishing speed. He briefly wore it to stop a criminal enterprise that was after his expermental work. The suit was bright red with yellow accents.
Green Arrow (rev 1.1)
Oliver Queen: wealthy, good looking, and blessed with a sharp intellect. What more could you ask for? Well, you could ask not to be dealing with a bloody-minded-uncomprimising-liberal-hippy-granola-eater. He's not so bad now, but when Oliver Queen inherited his parents company, Queen Manufacturing, he was into every evrivonmental and social movement that could be considered "liberal". Ollie wanted to save the whales, support PETA, make sure gays could marry, stop the nukes, increase funding to the poor, give prisoners more human rights, he was a strick vegan, and the list went on. That started to change when he was ninteen and attending a new age school in southern California. His parents died in a plan crash while on a business trip to Japan looking to expanding their electrical generation company, or as it would be called now "green energy".
Oliver proved to be a savvy executive and grew the small start up into a national player with advances in electric cars, battery storage capacities, and even superconductors. His motto, do right by the Earth. By the time he'd graduated from Berkley Ollie was a millionaire playboy, by the age of thirty he'd quadrupled the size of his parents manufacturing base, and his own net worth, and the company was well on the way to developing viable cold fusion technology. That all changed while yatching around the world his boat floundered in a storm in the south pacific and he washed up on a deserted island, the rest of his crew had died in the storm or drowned.
For three years he survived on that island alone until he was finally found by a Wayne Enterprises container ship. Returned to civilization Ollie found that Queen Manufacturing had been bought out by Lex Luthor's LexCorp. Luthor wanted the patents, specifically those related to superconductors and battery improvements. Luthor fired the the entire staff, sold most of the assests, and took the power technology that had been developed; he used to it to more or less complete a man portable coil gun program, along with kick start an energy weapon's program.
Ollie took what little of his personal wealth he had left and started again with Queen Industries, with significant investment (somewhere in the neighbourhood of 40%) from Wayne Enterprises to help things along. Since founding Queen Industries Ollie has taken the lessons learned during his ship wreck and applied them to life. Of the things he learned, two have stuck with him through the ordeal, one was was the equation of survival, the other was bow hunting. Oliver found that he had to compromise some of his ideals, like eating meat, when push came to shove. Oliver is still an idealist, but he's developed a pragmatic streak as well; sometimes its just easier to do something himself to stop a wrong then try to change the world. Thus the vigilante Green Arrow was born, out to stop those that prey on the weak and helpless, whether its an abusive spouse, criminal gangs, corrupt politicians, or completely legal but unethical corporations the the Green Arrow ha them his sights.
