Membership Drive

In the wake of the Triceraton Invasion, the new wave of supervillains emerging in the world, most notably New York, and some of the supernatural phenomena that had been troubling them behind the scenes, the Justice Force decided to expand it's roster, accepting applications from any hero who wished to apply.

Spider-Man decided to pass on this opportunity, as he'd already teamed up with the Silver Sentry before, and had been told he'd be a welcome member once he graduated high-school. The Green Mantle had yet to be re-discovered, so Flash couldn't attend either. And though tempted to join, young Billy Batson wondered whether or not he had the right to join, being only a teenager himself, albeit one with a couple of years of experience under his belt as Captain Marvel. Still, he followed the televised broadcast with interest.

Several heroes did show up, however, including a trio of friends who had wanted to be superheroes for a while. The first was Bowmaster, an archer equipped with a specially designed crossbow and quiver of trick arrows, confident in his abilities and skills. The second was Gauntlet, a former UFC fighter with the special power gloves that increased his strength and striking power. The last was Moleculo, the genius who had designed the trio's gear, and who had a belt that generated a personal force field. All three wanted to be superheroes for different reasons. Moleculo wanted the respect and admiration that heroes had, Gauntlet wanted to take on the most powerful opponents out there, and Bowmaster wanted to fight alongside his idols.

Along with the trio was Irish hero Cu Chulainn, who had come in the hopes that the Justice Force could help train him in his re-discovered abilities, as well as put his powers to good use.

The applicants were soon joined by Leonardo, Michelangelo, King Arthur, Griff (who was wearing a recently discovered 5th Pendant linked to the Mayan Sun Amulet, which allowed him walk about in the daytime), and the supernatural monster hunter, King Tiger. Arthur and Griff had encountered King Tiger in their wanderings, and the demon slayer had decided to accompany the duo on their quest. The trio had sought out the Turtles on the advice from the Manhattan Clan, as the Turtle's mystical connections might help the three wanderers find the missing Merlin (the original, not the current Merlin of the White Council). While the Turtles had little they could offer, they were about to go visit the Justice Force to let them know about the Demon Shredder's return, and thought that perhaps the superheroes could aid the trio in finding the missing magician. A short fight broke out between Gauntlet and the arrivals, but Cu Chulainn helped to break it up. After which, the Turtles, Arthur, Griff and Tiger were allowed to see the Justice Force.

At the same time this was happening, Agent Bishop and Baxter Stockman discovered the remnants of the Nano robot, collecting the nanobots and attempting to use a control chip to use the robot for their own goals. Instead, the control chip caused the robot to go on a rampage, assimilating captured Triceraton technology from Agent Bishop's secret base and marching throughout the city.

In Australia, Dingo and the Matrix robot that he wore for armor were patrolling the city when the Matrix became aware of Nano's activation. The two were apparently based on similar technology, with Matrix being a more advanced version of the Nano prototype. Indeed, Nano's emotions and the Matrix's lack of emotions were all due to changes in the various testing and refinement of the program and technology. Feeling that it needed to aid it's "older brother", Matrix convinced Dingo to travel to New York, flying into low orbit and using the planet's own rotation to make the trip in less than an hour.

Meanwhile, Nano saw a television program about the Justice Force. Feeling that the team might be able to help him, he made his way to the team's base on Justice Island, just off the coast of Manhattan. However, the control chip caused Nano to alternate back and forth between an aggressive assault program and trying to control himself, resulting in a march to the island that resulted in him attacking the heroes applying for Justice Force membership.

Inside the Justice Force HQ, the Turtles, Arthur, Griff and Tiger were introduced to the team, and made each of their respective causes known. While the Justice Force didn't know off hand where to find Merlin, they pledged themselves to helping the heroes out. It was at this time that Nano's assault caught their attention, and they rushed outside.

Gauntlet was the first hero to oppose Nano, but was quickly defeated with a single attack. Bowmaster put up a more valiant struggle, declaring that the robot would have to go through him if he wanted to get to the Justice Force. However, his arrows proved unable to damage Nano, who likewise took the archer out with a single attack. Moleculo, seeing his friends easily defeated, activated his force field and began to run away, only for Nano to assimilate the hero's force field belt into his systems, leaving Moleculo defenseless. Cu Chulainn intervened however, giving Silver Sentry enough time to save Moleculo, who promptly fainted.

The Sentry and Cu Chulainn were swiftly joined by Leo, Mikey, Arthur, Griff and Tiger, as well as Justice Force members Metalhead, Ananda, Chrysalis, Tsunami and Nobody. The Sentry's initial attack shredded Nano, but the robot simply assimilated surrounding matter and technology, spawning half a dozen Nano-robot clones that engaged the heroes. A fierce battle broke out between the heroes and Nano, who alternated between aggressively attacking the Justice Force to pleading for their help.

Seeing the battle broadcast to the world, Billy Batson decided that, ready or not, the Justice Force was going to get his help. One magic word later, Captain Marvel was flying to New York at supersonic speeds, making the time in mere minutes. As the Captain approached New York, Spider-Man, who had also seen the news broadcast, managed to get Cap's attention, asking Cap for a lift to Justice Island. With a smile, Cap happily flew the webslinger to the battle, where they lent their power and skill to the fight.

Despite the power of the heroes, Nano proved to be a formidable opponent. Anytime one robot was destroyed, it would assimilate nearby matter to repair itself. It quickly incorporated Gauntlet's power glove technology into one robot, which then had sufficient might to engage even Captain Marvel and the Silver Sentry. The heroes might have been overwhelmed, save that King Arthur provided exceptional battlefield tactics, organizing them into a defense that kept the battle contained to the island. Still, the heroes could make nothing more than a stalemate, until Dingo and Matrix arrived.

The Matrix could sense the control chip that was possessing Nano, and theorized that it could perhaps free the other robot from it, but that it ran the risk of being controlled itself. The only way to increase the possibility of success was to make physical contact with Nano quickly, which was a dangerous proposition. Dingo, however, heroically flew the pair into the lead Nano robot, tackling it into the Justice Force HQ and telling the Matrix to do whatever it had to, even knowing that he could die from this. The Matrix agreed, thanking his friend for this chance, and telling him 'Goodbye'.

Outside, the battle abruptly ended as the Nano-clones suddenly broke down into their basic core components and flowed back into the building, repairing the Justice HQ. On running inside they saw Dingo, now clad in a suit of armor whose coloration and design was more of a streamlined version of his original armor, while Nano and the Matrix were gone. The Justice Force computer then activated, revealing an entity that was a combination of both Matrix and Nano, the former's logic balancing the latter's emotion. This new being, the Master Matrix, apologized for its actions, and offered to serve as the Justice Force's computer system from this point onward, being the most advanced CPU on the planet. After Leo, Mikey and Dingo spoke on the behalf of the system, the Justice Force agreed.

In the aftermath of the battle, the Justice Force decided that this had served as a good impromptu test of all the applicants, and not only accepted Cu Chulainn into the team, but also offered membership to King Arthur, Griff, King Tiger, Dingo and Captain Marvel as well. Arthur and Griff were a bit taken aback by this, but felt that the Justice Force were, in effect, the modern day Knights of the Round Table, so the two both accepted. King Tiger, still a bit exhilarated from his first giant robot fight, readily agreed. Captain Marvel was flattered by the offer, and humbly accepted. Dingo accepted as well, but also stated that first he'd have to face the penalty for the crimes he'd committed while part of the Pack, but if the Force still wanted him after, he'd be honored. The JF's lawyers were able to work out a deal for Dingo with the Justice Department, given that Dingo's crimes were relatively minor. He would essentially stay under house arrest at the Justice Force HQ unless out on a mission or patrolling for a short period of time, with his superhero work acting as community service to clean the slate. After a month's time, during which he helped King Arthur get use to the modern time and train with King Tiger and Nobody, Dingo was a free man.

Of Moleculo, Gauntlet and Bowmaster, only Bowmaster decided to stay with being a hero. Moleculo decided to go back to pure science work, getting a job with Xanatos Enterprises as a researcher. Gauntlet decided that superhero fights weren't "any fun" and went back to the UFC. Bowmaster, however, was humbled by the fight, yet still wanted to fight alongside the Justice Force. While it was decided that he wasn't yet ready to join the Justice Force, Captain Marvel felt it unwise to let potential but untrained heroes like Bowmaster slip through the cracks. Marvel went on to suggest a kind of trainee program that would mentor inexperienced heroes, and help place them in super groups that could use them. The rest of the Justice Force agreed, and Bowmaster became their first official inductee to the Justice Academy training program. He was given a composite bow and more advanced trick arrows by Ananda, and received additional training in archery and general combat from King Tiger, Nobody and Master Splinter (who helped with the training as a favor to the Justice Force). While they believe Bowmaster has potential, he presently considered a reserve member to be called on in times of need.

Mikey, likewise, was only allowed reserve membership as a favor to both Leo and Master Splinter, given they both felt that Mikey lacked the maturity to join a super team at the moment. However, Silver Sentry promised that there would be a permanent spot on the team waiting for him one day.

Thus, the world's greatest superteam formed its most powerful, and some would say, greatest roster to date. The Justice Force at present includes:

The Silver Sentry
Captain Marvel
King Arthur
Dingo
Ananda
Griff
Metalhead
Cu Chulainn
Tsunami
Chrysalis
Nobody
King Tiger

Dingo's armor now incorporates Triceraton technology, and is more powerful than ever. It can't shapechange to the effect that Matrix could, being more 'solid', but it is capable of restructuring itself to a degree, to the point that Dingo can carry the armor around while its shaped like a briefcase.

King Arthur has also received a minor tech upgrade, with a suit of armor designed to resemble his classic look, but composed of modern alloys that are far more resistant to damage. His left gauntlet could also expand into a shield for additional protection, similar to what the Silver Sentry's armbands did in the original episode. This version of the Sentry doesn't use the shield or the 'baton' however, as that was toy-tie-in stuff that never really made any sense. The Sentry relies solely on his powers and experience.

In this combo-verse, there is no Raptarr or Avian society, with Griff taking his position on the Justice Force.

Contrary to a previous post, I've decided that MacBeth is actually the current financial backer of the Justice Force, his encounter with Arthur during Pendragon having made him realize that he can do more to help the world, to become the man he once was again. As such, he's supplied them with money, and outfitted them with the latest technology, including a supersonic team jet and hoverbikes for members like Nobody and King Arthur that lack travel powers. MacBeth also works with Arthur to see to the team's combat training, making them a more effective fighting unit.

Just an update to let everyone know what I'm currently working on, and to get some thoughts on how everyone's enjoying the setting thus far.

Right now, stuff on the drawing board includes:

  • Harry Dresden's first meeting with the Gargoyles.

  • Harry's first meeting with Spider-Man.

  • How the events of The Gathering went down in this universe.

  • How the final fight with the Demon Shredder went down,

  • A write up on Captain Marvel.

  • A write up on the Turtles, and how their chi training evolved after the battle with the Demon Shredder.

  • A write up on the supervillains of the setting, including several Captain Marvel villains and the new Pack, lead by Kraven the Hunter.

  • The Shredder War.

If anyone can think of other events you think might have gone different in this universe, or see some of the ideas listed above that you really want to see, give me a Top 5 list and I'll know what to work on first.

Nice thread so far (yes, I checked your Shameless Plug, despite it being Shameless :)). I'm wondering about Spidey being so liked by all the other heroic characters- it seems much more common in most of the Spider-Mythos that he'd end up fighting someone first, then having his personal life come into things and having the other hero think he was rude or something. I'm thinking of "Marvel Team-Up" where it'd invariably be a brawl between heroes at first. Did Spectacular Spidey ever end up teaming with other heroes? I know the COPS probably didn't like him, but then they probably wouldn't care for Gargoyles either.

Granted, it makes perfect sense that his attitude meshes perfectly with the younger Gargoyles and the Ninja Turtles. You'd think Pete would make a permanent habit of teaming with those guys.

First off, thanks, I'm glad you like the thread so far.

I'm sure there were plenty of misunderstanding fights in this setting, and Spidey probably continued the grand tradition here, but a nice thing about the Marvel Team Up books was that each hero tended to react to Spider-Man in his or her own way. Even if the team ups opened with a fight, like with Iron Fist, they'd often be friends by the end of the encounter. I see that going this way here, with maybe a fight between Silver Sentry, possibly even the entire Justice Force, only for Peter to wind up saving the day and getting the respect of the team. Most heroes in the Marvel Universe like Spider-Man, after all, and the Justice Force get along really well with the Turtles, who have similar attitudes to Peter.

In the Spectacular Spider-Man series itself, Peter never really got a chance to team up with other heroes, as the only thing close to another superhero he met with was Col. Jupiter, whose powers drove him insane shortly after their first team up that went mostly well, had Venom not screwed things up. The cops had mixed views on Spider-Man, as Capt. Stacey seemed to figure out Peter's secret ID and respected the kid for what he was doing.

Another thing is that more than a few of the heroes Peter interacts with suffer the same kind of mistrust from the public, like Harry, the Gargoyles and the Turtles, who would all relate to him easily and get along with him well. Another advantage with the superheroes is that it's relatively small compared to Marvel, and is more closely knit as a result, so word gets around if a hero is trustworthy or not.

Regarding the superhero population, I'm actually thinking of bringing in other source material to the setting to kind of flesh things out a bit more. As it stands, the only major superheroes of the setting are the Justice Force, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel.

I'm debating bringing either the Incredibles, Static Shock (sans the Justice League crossovers) or the Wildguard casts to the setting, possibly all of them. I don't want TOO many heroes in the setting, but more than what the world's got at this point. I'd like some mix of Marvel and DC tropes, basically where New York is still superhero capital, but it's only got something like 12 superheroes in it, and other major cities across the world have at least one superhero in them.

The Gathering

Harry Dresden's day had started out fairly well. He and Anastasia Luccio had a romantic evening that had culminated in breakfast in bed, which had lead to a few other distractions that had resulted in Harry getting to work late. He'd managed to collect a payment from previous case that left him chipper enough to go to Mac's for a beer and a long lunch meeting with a new client, who set him up with a case that sounded like a simple and safe way to make a bit of cash.

And then Harry came back from his lunch break to find Mab sitting in his chair, behind his desk. It pretty much all went downhill after that.

The Queen of the Winter Fae informed Harry that he would be leaving to go to New York before the sun set. After Harry managed to push the mind-numbing fear away from his mind, he actually became kind of hopeful. After all, if this was the last favor Mab had in mind for him, then all of his obligations to the Winter Court would be over and done with. However, when he asked her what the favor would be, she informed him that this was not a favor, and that his actions here would do nothing to erase his debt to her. Which of course prompted a very angry Harry to demand for what possible reason would he do anything for Mab then?

"Because, mortal, Queen Titania is going to steal the firstborn son of David and Fox Xanatos this very evening."

She went on to explain, in clear detail, the circumstances of what was occurring. How Oberon was calling his Children to Avalon, how Titania was Fox's mother, and how Titania hoped to take Fox's son back to the Summer Court to be raised as a true Child of Oberon, so that the child's mystical powers would not fade to nothing as Fox's had. She told of how Titania was planning to convince Oberon to allow this despite Oberon's decree regarding such matters, and that if Harry did nothing, then the child would almost surely be taken from its parents. And she said all of this with a completely straight face and not a hint of misdirection.

After making her statement, Mab got up to leave, at which point Harry asked what else there was to this. Mab said there was nothing else, she had told Harry the complete truth, as the sidhe were not allowed to tell a direct lie. Harry then asked why he should get involved in faery politics again, especially against the most powerful Faery short of the Mothers, and the Faery Queen that hates his guts on account of killing her daughter. Mab simply smiled and said, "Because if you do nothing, then a child will be taken away from his parents." And then she left.

A grumbling Harry went home, consulted with Bob, and then packed his things for a quick trip to New York. He made a phone call to someone he hoped might help. Not to the White Council, as he knew the Council would debate about whether or not this was something worth getting involved in at all, and knowing the Merlin he'd probably decide against risking the relationship of the Council and the Faery Courts by acting in this manner. The person Harry did call was a fellow Chicago resident who apparently was also away on an important matter, but he left a detailed message of what was going on and to get to New York as quick as possible. He made another pair of calls to some allies in New York, both of whom answered, freely offered their help and were told when and where to meet him.

Luckily for Harry, there was a quick Way through the Nevernever to Manhattan that he made use of on his frequent visits there. It saved him a ton on train fare and got him there in just over an hour of hiking through a rather pleasant meadow road. When Harry arrived, the packing, planning, calling and walking and trekking through New York had him arrive at his destination a couple of hours after sundown. Said destination was the rooftop of a building that neighbored a police station with a rather prominent clocktower on it. He was soon joined on the rooftop by Spider-Man and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who then helped Harry get to the clocktower via some webslinging. Once there, Harry was reacquainted with Brooklyn, Hudson, Lexington and Broadway, as well as several unfamiliar faces. It seemed Avalon had just returned Goliath, Elisa, Bronx and Goliath's daughter Angela from a World Tour of sorts, and Goliath had just returned from bringing Elisa home. Introductions were made and Harry explained just what was going on, just as Titania appeared to tell the Gargoyles not to interfere in Oberon's plan.

The meeting between Harry and Titania didn't go well. Titania addressed Harry as 'murderer', which Harry actually accepted grudgingly. He apologized that Aurora had to die, but tried to explain to Titania that he hadn't had any choice. That her actions would have destroyed the world. To which Titania said, "I understand, mortal. I know why it had to be done. I know that what you did saved the entire world, spared the people of both Courts thousands of years of bloodshed. That your actions saved literally billions of lives. And yet, I think that I would have been able to bear all of that just to hold my daughter one more time."

Titania informed the group to stay out of this affair, before departing in a slow vanishing act. The group, however, agreed that something had to be done, even as Oberon began his assault on Xantos' tower. To keep the mortals from interfering, Oberon cast a sleep spell that rendered all mortals on the island unconscious, including the Justice Force. Harry only just barely defended himself, the Turtles and Spider-Man from the sleep spell, which made him realize that the attack had started. The 12 heroes quickly departed, making their way to Xantos' tower, only to see a Godzilla-sized Oberon assaulting the building, which was sheathed in a protective force field. The Gargoyles flew Harry in front of Oberon, where both he and Goliath tried to appeal to the Faery King not to take this path. Oberon actually took this opportunity to thank Harry, saying that the wizard had done him and the world a great service by killing Aurora. The clean up of wars between the Courts is such a bother after all, and Oberon truly does not wish for mortals or faery to die unnecessarily. However, he looked at the Xanatos child as a way to restore to Titania something of what she had lost, a chance to bring new life to the Faery Courts, and as such, he would not be swayed.

The fight started in earnest after that.

The heroes fought amazingly well as a group for their first large scale team up. The Gargoyles and Spider-Man acted as distractions, flying and swinging about to keep his attention off of the ground bound mortal wizard and ninja turtles. Harry stood atop a building near Oberon, using Earth magic to magnetically manipulate the iron remnants of the Steel Clan robots that Oberon had already destroyed in battle, flinging them at the Faery Lord while the turtles got in position to launch a sneak attack on him. The iron hurt Oberon such that he directed a bolt of mystical energy at Harry, who needed to reinforce his Shield Bracelet's spell with Soul Fire in order to ward off the blast. At this time, Spider-Man webbed Oberon's eyes shut, followed by Brooklyn and Broadway flying Leonardo and Raphael onto Oberon's back, where the steel wielding turtles attacked for all they were worth, weakening Oberon further. The Faery Lord ignited a magical aura around himself that sent both turtles flying away, stunned, only for Spider-Man to catch them in a web net.

At this time, Halcyon Renard and the Cyberbiotics airship entered the fray, sending out flying drones to further distract Oberon and drain his power. Oberon countered by bringing several statues to life that engaged the gargoyles and Spider-Man, while he himself dealt with the airship by making its engines freeze, causing it to crash into Central Park. The Gargoyles and Spider-Man defeated the statues, but once again had to deal with Oberon himself, who seemed prepared to destroy them all.

Then, the phone call Harry made earlier paid off, as a red, white and gold streak suddenly interposed itself between Oberon and the other heroes. Captain Marvel hovered in the air before Oberon, who had again taken human dimensions, and the Captain respectfully but firmly asked him to stop this.

"I am OBERON!" the Faery Lord declared. "I will not be denied, not even by the Champion of Shazam!"

"Then of course you realize this means war," the Captain replied, smiling grimly as he quoted the sage hare Bugs.

The two supernatural beings flew at each other, and the battle caused the skies to erupt in a violent display of thunder and lighting. Every attack caused the entire skyline to light up, as the World's Mightiest Mortal battled the Lord of All Faery. The clouds flashed, the air shook, and the ground trembled with each attack, and for all his courage, for all his power, for all his determination, Captain Marvel was simply outmatched. The Captain was still too new to his power, to unprepared for this kind of battle. In a year or so he would perhaps be able to stand up to Mab or Titania themselves. But he faced neither the Queens now, he faced their Lord and Master. And it was with a final blast of energy that Captain Marvel was sent hurtling down to the street, where he shattered the ground and was driven into the basement area of the Xantos tower. Oberon followed Captain Marvel down and, standing on the unconscious hero's body, destroyed the generators that powered the building's force field.

As the force field faltered, David Xanatos and his father Petros stood amongst the battlements of the castle that crowned his tower. Soon Harry, Spider-Man, the remaining Gargoyles and all four Turtles joined them, even as Oberon appeared once more. Xanatos attacked, but was swiftly disarmed and batted aside. Petros managed to impale Oberon with an iron rod, which weakened him considerably, but served only to make Oberon angrier still. However, that weakness allowed the remaining heroes to marshall an assault. Once again, Spider-Man blinded Oberon with webbing, while the Turtles moved in and began to flip and slash and strike, fading in and out to allow the Gargoyles a chance to claw and rend and punch, and Spider-Man himself joined in with leaping kicks and webbing that pinned Oberon's arms to his sides. And for several minutes it looked like the heroes might have won, when Oberon began his counter attack. Angela and Brooklyn were drawn into Oberon's cloak, where they suffered intense cold as their life forces were drained away. Oberon then released them from his cloak, having them smash into Petros and Michelangelo, knocking them out. Donatello and Raphael interposed themselves between Oberon and their fallen friends, only for Oberon to cause Don's staff to sprout multiple branches, becoming a tree that securely bound up both of the Turtles in place. Spider-Man, Leonardo and Goliath all charged Oberon together, but he phased himself so that they passed through him, and then telekinetically threw all three of them into a wall, declaring loudly that "THIS ALTERCATION IS OVER!"

To which Harry Dresden replied "But this EVOcation is just getting started, asshole!" Oberon turned to see that the whole time the fight had been going on, Harry had been focusing, concentrating on his blasting rod, which was glowing with blue-white fire. He pointed the rod at Oberon, with a yell of "Fuego! Pyrofuego!", he unleashed the most potent blast of fire he could manage, focused and amplified with all the Soulfire he could spare. A column of pure white fire as thick as a telephone post erupted from the rod, which caused the rod itself to explode in Harry's hand. The lance of flame, so thick it was a solid object, smashed into Oberon with so much force that it knocked him off the top of the tower and sent him crashing into the observation deck of the Empire State building nearly a mile away. Harry dropped to his knees, gasping for air, physically, mentally and spiritually spent, only for Oberon to teleport back to the rooftop, a hideous burn on his chest that began to swiftly heal. His eyes blazing with rage, Oberon drew his hand back to throw a blast of energy at Harry, only for Captain Marvel to grasp Oberon's hand by the wrist and throw him into a nearby wall. Battered and bruised, the Captain declared his and Oberon's fight wasn't over. Oberon pulled himself from the wall, and the pair once again clashed, only for the Captain to quickly be blasted away, knocked into Harry with enough force to leave them both stunned.

Finally feeling that he had dealt with all of the potential pests, Oberon was angered further when Owen revealed himself, and then transformed himself to Puck, much to the surprise of everyone there save Xanatos. Puck explained the story of how he came to serve Xanatos, assaulting Oberon with the stone statues he used for visual aids during the story, eventually asking that Oberon just leave Xanatos' son alone for a century or two. Oberon loudly declared that "Oberon does NOT compromise. Oberon COMMANDS!" before blasting Puck aside.

Oberon then stormed into Fox's room, swiftly disarming the woman and making his way to her child. Titania appeared by Oberon's side, and cast a spell to immobilize Goliath, Xanatos, Puck, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Leonardo and Harry Dresden as they all came rushing in. It was then that Fox, seeing her child about to be taken away, was able to call upon her magical talent and blast Oberon hard enough to send him flying out of the building. While Oberon returned in an almost homicidal rage, Goliath was able to talk the Faery Lord down, explaining that if Fox could tap her power without any training and after so many years of disuse, then her son could be trained on Earth without being taken to Avalon. Oberon agreed, selecting Puck to act as the boy's teacher and guardian, but also stripped Puck of his powers unless he was acting in either capacity. Oberon and Titania then departed, though not before Titania promised to visit, and whispered something in Fox's ear.

In the aftermath of the battle, none of the heroes were harmed, and all had forged a deeper respect for each other. Xanatos himself was incredibly grateful to all present, and made a pledge to repay them for what they had done. The heroes departed the tower to rest and recuperate at the gargoyle's home, before eventually returning to their homes. The Merlin was initially VERY pissed at Harry's actions, but when both Captain Marvel and Xanatos appeared before the Council to speak on his behalf, and Xanatos offered to actually lend financial aid to the White Council during the war, the Merlin had little choice but to congratulate Harry on a job well done.

Oberon returned to Avalon, got his gardening tools out, and went tend to his plants, and DARED anything to get in his way. Nothing did.

As for Queen Titania, her whisper to Fox explained that she had set things up to be a win/win scenario. The entire battle had been to force Fox to use her long buried magical powers, so that perhaps one day Fox might become the new Summer Lady. If it had not, then Titania would have gotten a new child to raise within the Summer Court to add more power to it. Mab, for her part, knew that Harry's involvement would ultimately prevent Titania from taking the child, and that by exposing the Xanatos family to Harry, they would then turn to Dresden if they had any supernatural problems, and his influence might reinforce the ill feelings the Xanatos' had toward faeries in general, and drive a deeper wedge between Fox and her mother.

Only time will tell which Queen will get what she wants.

Okay, that's the "The Gathering" done. Any thoughts on what should be the next up on the block?

I really like the stories and think that kicked butt. But even more so I like explanations and broad > specific. I vote writeups and more what's what and who's where before you get to more how and why.

Fair enough. In that case then, I'll put some of the story stuff off for now, and turn to a certain green foursome.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: General Info

It's been a long, strange road for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their master Splinter. After spending 16 years in near total isolation from the rest of the world, the last three years or so have seen the turtles save the world no less than three times, defend New York City from a multitude of threats, and become friends with humans, mutants, wizards, superheroes, aliens, robots and gargoyles. Their once small clan has grown into a large extended family, and the Turtles have truly never been happier.

The last several months have been particularly interesting for the Turtles, as they not only defeated the returned Demon Shredder (with a LOT of help), but they also teamed up with alternate universe versions of themselves to thwart the return of the Utrom Shredder, who planned to destroy all of existence. Most happily however, the Turtles attended the wedding of April O'Neil and Casey Jones, which went off without a hitch. While the Turtles continue to fight crime and aid other heroes against evil, the Turtles themselves feel that most of their old foes have been dealt with, and look forward to some relative peace in the near future. Unfortunately for them, the Turtles are perhaps in for the biggest fight of their lives, as both Shredders will soon return to menace the world, with the Turtles themselves caught in the middle.

A few general notes about the Turtles.

  • As trained ninja, all of the Turtles are prepared to kill in battle. They prefer not to, and do so only rarely, but it is something the Turtles are willing to do if the situation calls for it. They generally reserve this only for irredeemably evil opponents, such as the Shredders, while trying to spare the Foot Ninja, who are merely doing what their master commands. Likewise, they make every effort not to seriously injure people that they feel are just misguided or have good in them, like Karai. Still, as Leo demonstrated when he decapitated the Shredder, if they must kill someone, they will.

  • After the fight with the Demon Shredder, the Turtles lost the amulets that served to enhance their chi, and they returned the magical weapons they'd been given to the Ninja Tribunal. However, they didn't lose the lessons they'd learned over the course of their training, merely the amulets that artificially enhanced their inner power. The Turtles have since begun training in earnest to master their chi with new techniques, and Splinter has encouraged them to develop these skills in a manner that reflects their own personalities. This is reflected by the Turtles gaining fighting techniques similar to the Super Nintendo version of the TMNT Tournament Fighters game, albeit with some of the moves switched around to reflect the personalities of the 2003 Turtles. I'll get into this with each Turtle's bio, but sufficed to say the Turtles are now amongst the most skilled fighters on the planet, even more so than previously.

  • The events of Fast Forward didn't occur in this time line, and as a result, neither did many of the events of Back to the Sewers. However, certain things did occur, such as the wedding of April and Casey and the return of the Green Mantle. However, none of the time traveling or cyber-space entering events happened.

  • The Turtles as a whole have good relationships with the Gargoyles, Harry Dresden, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel and the Justice Force. They tend to hang out with the Gargoyles several times a week, given how much they can relate as being non-humans in a human dominated society. Likewise, the Turtles appreciate the human allies they have in Harry, Spider-Man and the Justice Force, and it isn't uncommon to see any of them spending time with each other, or coming to the others aid. As The Gather demonstrated, many of the largest events of the setting often involved all of these heroes coming together to avert catastrophe. How the Turtles relate to individual members of the heroic community will be touched on either under their own notes or in the notes of the hero in question.

  • The events of Turtles Forever did occur, though with some slight variation. For one thing, the 80's Turtles were portrayed as being closer to their original mini-series counterparts, and though still much sillier than their 2003 variants, were not Flanderized to the point of near retardedness as in the movie. Likewise, when the Utrom Shredder began destroying the Prime Turtles, the chain reaction he had started wouldn't have literally wiped out every universe in existence, but merely would have resulted in the destruction of those universes where the Turtles actions proved crucial to saving it. As a result, the Shredder would have wiped himself and several continuities out of existence, as the Turtles had more than once been the only thing to prevent their planet, and sometimes their universes, destruction.

  • At present, the Turtles occupy a position similar to the Gargoyles, in that their presence is suspected but not confirmed by the general public. There are reports of large Turtles moving about the city (which was what drew them to Harry Dresden's attention in the first place), but they're mostly considered an urban legend. However, like the Gargoyles, the Turtles existence will eventually be revealed to the public, and they will have to deal with what follows.

What follows is a write-up of the Turtles and their allies, and where they're at presently. This will mostly deal with how the Turtles have evolved overtime and how they interact with the rest of the heroes of the setting. If you want to know how the Turtles relate to each other, watch the 2003 cartoon, ya lazy bums.

Leonardo

For the longest time, Leo was defined by his family, his relationship to them, and what he would do for them. He embraced Splinter’s teachings of philosophy and the martial arts in order to be the good, dutiful son, doing his best to accept those lessons whole heartedly and master them to perfection. He spends much of his free time practicing and perfecting his skills, both because of a personal desire for self improvement, and so that he can one day pass on Splinter’s teachings to others. With his brothers he assumed the role of the responsible older sibling, which (as Michelangelo of all people pointed out) allowed each of said siblings to pursue their own goals freely, trusting on some level that Leo would take care of them.

Out of all the Turtles, he is the one has grown up the most in the subsequent years since the Turtles have been forced out of their isolationism. He has moved beyond simply doing as Splinter commanded and acted as his own conscience dictated, such as ignoring Splinter’s order to not get involved with the gang wars that resulted from the Utrom Shredder’s defeat. He also suffered the greatest personal defeats of the Turtles, nearly being killed by the Utrom Shredder twice; the latter instance resulted in an almost self destructive downward spiral. In both instances however, Leo was able to physically and spiritually recover, and even channel those defeats into positive self-improvement. These events have all help shape him into someone that his brothers now officially recognize as their leader (even if Raph does so begrudgingly), to the point that it was Leonardo who lead the combined forces of heroes and villains against the Demon Shredder. The Leonardo of today is a noble and honorable master of the martial arts, confident yet humble, and becoming more philosophical and spiritual regarding his life as time goes by. He also tries to see the best in people, even giving potential enemies the benefit of the doubt whenever possible. While Mikey might be the one that wishes to most be a superhero, Leo is the one who best embodies traditional superhero values and morality.

Leo, like all the Turtles, has enjoyed getting to know more people beyond just Splinter and his brothers. In addition to their usual allies, he’s become good friends with Miyamoto Usagi, and utilizes the Battle Nexus transition ritual to visit his friend once or twice a month, usually getting into one adventure or another when he does. Of the Gargoyles, he tends to hang out with Goliath the most, given their similar status as honorable leader types. Leo and Goliath spend a lot of time discussing philosophy, matters regarding the city’s well being, books they’ve read, and sparring. Leo is slowly making Goliath more adept at handling faster, more agile opponents, while Goliath keeps Leo’s skills with larger, stronger opponents sharp. Harry Dresden rather likes Leo, as the wizard sees the turtle as an amalgamation of Shiro and Michael, and has debated whether or not he should see how Fidelacchius responds to the Turtle. Spider-Man likewise enjoys Leo’s company, as they both have very well developed, if not overdeveloped, senses of responsibility. Both of them can understand why the other takes what they do so seriously, even if Peter plays the part of the clown while he does it. Leo and King Arthur are also regular sparring partners, and the fact that Leo loses as many of those matches as he wins simply reminds him that he can never stop trying to improve himself. Arthur and Leo also like to shop talk tactics afterwards, and have an ongoing game of chess as well. Captain Marvel thinks Leo is pretty cool, and is debating revealing his identity to the Turtle so he can receive some training from him as Billy Batson.

Leonardo is the most balanced with regards to their physical and mental attributes. While he can’t match his brothers in their respective specialties, he’s better at them in the areas they lack, being smarter than Raph and Mikey, stronger than Mikey and Don, and faster/more agile than Raph and Don. Furthermore, he’s also the most skilled of the four when it comes to both the martial and stealth aspects of ninjitsu, having dedicated himself to the perfection of those skills. Only a very few beings are his equal in terms of martial skill or swordsmanship (Usagi and King Arthur being two such people), and even fewer truly surpass him.

After losing his chi enhancing medallion, Leo went back to work refining his chi, until he could use it to enhance his physical strikes, provide self healing (which allowed him to finally heal the damage to his shell that the Utrom Shredder had inflicted), and create the following specialized techniques.
  • Endless Screw: Leo summons a miniature cyclone around him as he surges forward, spinning with his swords outstretched and slicing everything around him. See the 1 minute mark here for the general idea.
  • Shining Cutter: Leo channels his chi into his sword and swings them through the air, creating an energy slash that travels long distance to attack enemies.
  • Roto Cutter: Leo leaps into the air, spinning and channeling chi to his outstretched swords as he does, effectively becoming a living buzzsaw that has even more fearsome slicing power than normal.
  • Fire Dragon: Leo’s ultimate move summons his totem spirit into the blades of his swords, and then unleashes it in a pure, raw, dragon shape wave of chi.

Donatello

Don is the Turtle least comfortable with his role as a ninja warrior, having the heart and mind of a scientific idealist. He much prefers to spend his free time working on marvels of engineering with nothing more than his raw intelligence and the skills he’s picked up from discarded scientific journals and text books. He gets practically giddy over the prospect of building a new device or solving a new scientific puzzle, to the point of being distracted while working on such projects. He sees his intelligence as his strongest point, and can sometimes get pensive over problems he can’t wrap his head around. He has very strong pacifist ideals, preferring to talk things out whenever possible and save violence as a last resort. However, rather than being one of those scientists that can’t relate to other people, Don genuinely likes people and tends to get along well with almost everyone, though especially those with scientific leanings.

Don initially was much more shy and much less confident before the Turtles began what they refer to as their ‘adventuring’ period. Prior to that, he often felt out of place as the science geek amongst the group, and bonded with Mikey over their mutual enjoyment of ‘non-ninja’ activities. This lack of confidence actually hurt his ninja training, as he felt inadequate next to the turtles with more natural talent (Raph, Mikey) or intense dedication (Leo), and spent more time researching and reading up on various scientific journals and books than he did in extra training. However, once he met April, he found a fellow genius he could talk with, and the new lair they found gave him an outlet for all of his scientific creativity. And as the turtles had more and more adventures, they came to rely on Don’s inventions and ingenuity. He realized that while Leo always knew what to do and could plan how to do it, and that Mikey and Raph were often instrumental in getting it done, it was usually only because of himself that they had the means to achieve their goals. This greatly bolstered his confidence and resulted in him being more assertive, as well as designing more and more gear and vehicles for the Turtles to use as they became more proactive in defending the city. Likewise, after being the first Turtle to lose a match in the Battle Nexus Tournament, Don recommitted to his training rather than getting discouraged about his loss, and is now roughly as skilled as Raph and Mikey are. While still somewhat shy and very introspective, Don self-confidence and overall competence have never been greater.

As stated, Don benefitted greatly from the friendships he formed once the Turtles began to interact with the outside world more. April and he have formed a very close bond due to being the first person he could relate to when it came to scientific interests. Likewise, when the Turtles befriended Leatherhead, Don was happy to have another person he could geek out with. Leatherhead has become a partner in science to Donatello, helping with both the design and construction of the various Turtle’s gear due to his scientific skill and his ability to lift several tons of weight. Amongst the Gargoyles, Don often spends his time with Lexington, given the duo’s similar natures and temperaments. Don keeps offering to help Lex build some gear for the Gargoyles, but at present Goliath feels such devices would just draw attention to them, though he has allowed for them to build small communicators so that the Clan can keep in touch with each other. Harry Dresden and Donatello are on friendly terms, but Harry’s presence as a walking techno-bane does nothing to endear him to the turtle. However, he has taken up sparring with Harry and showing him more advanced quarterstaff techniques, which has made Harry an even more formidable fighter. Don and Spider-Man may as well be brothers for how well they get along, with Peter likewise often helping out with Don’s inventions, who in turn often puts his resources at Peter’s disposal. This has let Peter refine his webshooter design, and he’s currently working with Don to develop tracking devices, possibly even one he could attune to his Spider-Sense (an idea he picked up from Harry Dresden’s tracking spell). Captain Marvel and Don get along, given their temperament, but Don usually takes the opportunity of Cap’s visits to have him lift, haul or otherwise move something REALLY heavy while Don works on it. It actually isn’t all that surprising to see Don, Lex, Leatherhead and Spider-Man all working on some new device together, which often inspires the other Turtles to seek entertainment out in the city, as the chatter can reach critical mass levels of nerdiness.

Don is without a doubt the most intelligent of the turtles, and is an extraordinary inventive and engineering genius. He’s capable of designing advanced machines using mostly materials scrounged in junk yards or bought from common outlet stores like Radio Shack. In his time he’s built weaponized buses, cars, hovercraft, and even a tunneling machine that allowed the Turtles to journey deep underground. He’s likewise shown himself capable of understanding advanced technology, even of an alien nature, with only little examination. In addition to that, he’s proven himself a capable ninja master, no less skilled than Mikey or Raph, though he lacks some of their physical specialization. Don’s clear headed thinking and approach to problem solving often makes him the Turtle Leo picks for second in command.

Don’s great intelligence actually allowed him to grasp the fundamentals of chi manipulation first, and in addition to the basic techniques all the Turtles share, has created the following.
  • Bo Thrust: Don can thrust his staff out so quickly that it appears to be striking someone over a dozen times at once, and can maintain this barrage to inflict truly impressive damage.
  • Ground Claw: To maximize the power and range of his standard projectile attack, Don drags his staff over the ground and sends a three foot high shockwave of chi traveling along the ground, Power Wave style.
  • Headspin: Don developed this technique to deal with multiple attackers in a non-lethal way. He quickly ducks into a headstand, spinning in place with his staff extended and his feet scissoring outward. The staff trips everyone around him while his chi-enhanced kicks sends them flying away, usually with enough force to stun them all.
  • Energy Spray: Don’s ultimate technique involves him leaping into the air and spinning his staff in front of him like a propeller, which causes an Akuma-like cone of chi bolts to rain out from his spinning staff, inflicting great damage while also being hard to dodge.

Raphael

Raph embodies many of the traditional “tough guy” qualities, and unlike a lot of the guys that adopt that kind of persona, it isn’t an act (for the most part, anyway). Raph is loud, confrontational, sardonic and utterly fearless to the point of recklessness in the face of danger. He’s the strongest, toughest turtle there is, and he’ll gladly prove it to you if you say otherwise. It seemed like half the time he spent during the Turtles isolations was getting into arguments with Leonardo or Michelangelo, and the other half was spent punching something, whether it was his bag or either of the aforementioned brothers. At the same time, Raph is unquestionably loyal and dedicated to his family, and would suffer anything to keep them safe. He’s the only one that can pick on his brothers, and woe be to the person that tries to harm them. It’s in this instance that Raph’s macho persona is partly a cover for how deeply he cares for and respects his family, as he doesn’t want to be thought of as a softie.

Raph’s confrontational nature is due to the mixture of pride, anger and insecurity he carries with him. Raph knows he’s the bravest, most badass turtle of the bunch, and yet he feels like second best when it comes to Leonardo. Leo is calm and serene, a dutiful son, a responsible older brother, and a dedicated master of the martial arts. Leo succeeds in what he does and appears to do so effortlessly, which hurts Raph’s pride and just makes him angrier. Part of him wishes he could be more like Leo, while most of him just holds onto his anger and channels it into his training so he can eventually one up his brother.

Of the Turtles, Raph has likely benefitted the most from contact with the outside world, though in many respects he has changed the least. He’s no less the quintessential tough guy, no less brave or “in your face” than he was originally, and at a glance doesn’t seem all that different. Now however, he’s seen how unrestrained anger can not only hurt him, but the people he cares about, and has let a lot of it go, though of the four he still has the worst temper. He’s seen his family in actual danger, has come close to losing them several times, and the realization of how important they are has made him cover his feelings for them less and less. Most of all, he no longer feels the resentment towards Leo he did during their formative years. It says something about Raph that it took Leo’s nearly dead body being thrown through a window to get this started, but Raph would be the first to admit that he can be dense at times. Seeing his brother fall, build himself back up twice over, recognizing the sacrifices Leo has made for the team, and watching Leo evolve into someone who would one day be leading the charge against the Demon Shredder, has replaced Raph’s jealousy with a strong admiration for his brother. He still considers Leo his rival, but in a friendly, brotherly way that motivates him to improve himself. He’s still full of pride, but now it’s more of a pride in his family as a group than in himself. But he’ll punch you in the face if you try to get him to actually admit any of that.

Raph’s best friend outside of the Turtles is Casey Jones, with whom he shares both a short temper and a love of butt-kicking. The duo actually work together doing vigilante style work fairly frequently, which helps them blow off steam. Furthermore, the two actually have helped keep each other in check, since they recognize the other’s anger as a mirror of their own, and thus have seen what could happen if they lose control. Likewise, his association with Leatherhead has helped him be a bit more conscious of his words and his anger. Of the gargoyles, Raph gets along best with Brooklyn, the two sharing a love of motorcycles, and often go riding together on a pair of bikes they had Don make for them. Raph respects Harry Dresden’s courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and his ability to mouth off at even the most dangerous foe, but he tends to go crosseyed whenever Harry starts talking about magic. Spider-Man and Raph get along alright for similar reasons, but likewise considers Peter a bit of a nerd due to the whole science thing. Raph tends to think Captain Marvel is a bit wide eyed and goody two-shoes, but ever since he saw Cap throw down with Oberon, he’s had to respect the sheer guts the guy has.

Raph is physically the strongest and toughest of the turtles, his own personal training outside of Splinter’s lessons having been geared towards those ends. He terms of straight up damage, he can dish out and take more than any of his brothers, which compliments his Wolverine-like fighting style. Raph prefers to attack directly, and when he channels his anger properly can be an incredibly dangerous opponent. He’s also no less skilled in the ninja arts than Don or Mikey. Beyond this, Raph is probably the best driver of the Turtles next to Don, and Don’s superior when it comes to motorcycles. Raph loves that particular vehicle type, and it’s the only type of machine he’ll dedicate time to maintain himself.

Raph’s more straightforward personality hasn’t lead to a wide diversity in his chi abilities, but his sheer willpower let him master certain techniques before Leo during their training. He’s since channeled that will and drive into creating the following techniques.
  • Chest Buster: Raph rolls forward along the ground and flips up to plant both of his feet into his opponent with a chi enhanced kick, which can be hard enough to punch through concrete.
  • Jamboree: Raph channels his chi into the tip of his sai and throws a disk of energy at his target.
  • Power Drill: Befitting Raph’s “head on” nature, this technique launches him flying forward M. Bison style, sai outstretched and forward to drill through a line of targets.
  • Millennium Wave: Raph’s finishing move starts with him saving both of his sai’s, before channeling his chi into his hands and then launching dozens and dozens of punches, each of which sends a burst of fist-shaped chi energy outward in an endless wave.

One of the interesting things the newest cartoon series hit upon was that Donatello was the one who linked all of them.
All of the turtles tend to, to a degree, get on each others nerves on occassion. Leonardo is teacher's pet/stick in the mud, Mikey can't take anything seriously, Raph is a grouchy angry loudmouth, but Donatello was usually the one who could hang with any of his brothers without seeming out of place.
Serious enough to hang with Leo, goofy enough to hang with Mikey, and understanding enough to hang with Raph.

Love the setting Ares. Look forward to seeing what's next.
