Origin:
Illyana Rasputina was born in Russia in 2005 to Nickolai and Alexandria Rasputin. She was the third of three children. Alexandria, a child bride of a man fifteen years her elder, spread her three children over 16 years having her first, Piotr, when she was only sixteen and her last sixteen years later. As Illyana grew she never knew her brother Piotr. His name was not spoken in her house. She knew only that he had been a monster of some sort. It would not be until many years later that she would meet him for the first time. Their meeting did not occur until after Piotr joined, and briefly left, the X-Men. When Piotr did return he would find that his parents had disappeared leaving Illyana and Mikhail to be raised by their paternal grandmother, Elena. Despite their years apart, Illyana took to Piotr instantly finding something comforting in his great size and kindness. Their reunion would be short-lived, however, as Piotr’s stay was brief. He would leave after only a few weeks to once again help the X-Men and the world. Illyana could not understand why her brother was deserting her just as her parents had. She took the separation badly this event further reinforcing an already developing sense in her that anyone she became close to would abandon her. Unfortunately, this would not be the last time she felt the pain of loss.
In 2011 the course of Illyana’s life would be altered forever. It was then that Russian Mafioso Anatol Spichkin was murdered by rivals. After Spichkin’s death, her parents returned to her. Illyana, only six, did not understand why they had returned. The truth was that the Rasputins had been forced to flee their home. They feared that Spichkin would punish them for Piotr’s decision to leave his service for the X-Men. They had fled even deeper into the wilderness of Siberia eking out a meager existence. However, now with Spichkin out of the way they believed that the threat to their lives had ended.
Unfortunately for the Rasputins, Spichkin’s death left a void in the Red Mafiya criminal organization which a ruthless thug named Maxim Titov coveted. Titov saw the Rasputin children as a resource that he could use to take control of Spichkin’s former position in the Mafiya. Titov believed that the children were, or would become, mutants. He also knew that his onetime mentor Spichkin had used Piotr’s powers to his advantage. While Titov possessed a sort of low cunning, he lacked creativity and therefore decided to do exactly as Spichkin had done.
Maxim took his thugs and went to the Rasputin home. He demanded that Nickolai and Alexandria turn their children over to them. When they refused, Illyana was forced to watch as Titov ordered one of his men to kill her mother. Nickolai cried out and tried to lunge at Titov. He never made it, Titov shot Illyana’s father dead. One of Titov’s men grabbed Mikhail and threw him over his shoulder. Titov himself moved to grab Illyana. The girl, crazy with fear, manifested her mutant powers for the first time. A perfect circle of blue-white energy coalesced at her feet. The circle began to rise as Titov and his comrades stumbled back in fear. The Mafiya stood frozen as they saw that, below the glowing circle, the girl was gone, as if she was being erased by the progress of it up her body. When the circle had risen above her head it disappeared. Illyana Rasputina was gone.
Illyana awoke in strange land. She was confused by her surroundings. The weather here was warm, but moments before she had been in the middle of a cold Russian winter. She wandered until she was found by a man driving an ox cart. He spoke no language that Illyana recognized. What Illyana did not know was that she had been teleported across time and space. She now stood in 1395 just outside of Florence Italy. The man who found her was confused by the little girl in the strange clothes who spoke no Italian. He took her into Florence and turned her over to the city officials. These men did not know what to do with her, but soon a solution presented itself.
They argued about the girl’s origin. Some believed her to be a member of a traveling mummers group, others a gypsy, still a third man said it was clear that her family had been taken by the death and that she might be infected too. This last man had many listeners. These men were old enough to remember thousands dying covered in black spots just fifty years ago. Before a final decision was made, the door swung open; in the doorway stood Lucifer Belasco. As he moved into the room some men made signs of the cross and others the fig sign, but all stood back and made way. A murmur went up among them when Belasco spoke to the girl in what seemed to be her own tongue. Illyana understood the man and he assured her everything would be alright, but she could sense the unease in the other men and was unsure. Illyana’s instincts were quite accurate. A thousand tales floated around Belascol like Christ’s own halo. Some said he was two hundred years old, others he had come from the east and was a mysterious alchemist or sorcerer, while still others said he consorted with demons. One thing was not rumor: the man was fabulously wealthy and held influence in both Papal Rome and with the Albizzi family. Belasco spoke to the men saying that the girl was lost and that he was in need of a ward. He claimed the girl and the men of Florence were powerless to deny him. Belasco smiled at Illyana and even at six years old she thought that he was less pleased to get his way than he was that the others had been powerless to stop him. Belasco led Illyana from the city taking her to his estate near the sea.
Unbeknownst to Illyana, when she appeared in this time and place, Belasco had sensed her great power. Illyana was doubly blessed: she was both mutant and mystic. For it was not the genetic power that Belasco sensed, but the gift. Over the next several years, Belasco trained Illyana as his apprentice. Over that time, Illyana fostered mixed feelings about the sorcerer. Although he was the only person other than her grandmother who had not abandoned her, he was not a kind man. He treated her more as a servant than a daughter. Further he could be exceedingly cruel to those he felt were beneath him, a category that included nearly everyone he encountered. In the beginning she would lie awake trying to “will” herself back home. She did not know that her mutant gene had only temporarily activated in the time of her greatest terror and had once again returned to dormancy. Eventually she gave in to Belasco’s training, trying to learn everything she could from him.
Ten years passed like this; Belasco pushing and her striving harder to please him. However, lately Belasco had begun to grow more and more preoccupied with enhancing his own power, whatever the cost. He had secretly turned his back on the Christian faith and had begun worshipping an inscrutable pantheon he called the elder gods. Illyana worried that the worship of these beings had become an obsession for him. He engaged in a dark ritual one summer evening. He locked himself into his room with five servant girls. When he emerged the girls had disappeared and Belasco now bore a thin black chord with five equally spaced stones upon it. The stones were the color of blood and several times when they had grazed Illyana’s flesh they were warmer than they had a natural right to be.
Finally Illyana resolved that she could not close her eyes to the monster Belasco had become. One night she stole into his sanctum and read his journals hoping to prove her suspicions wrong. She was shocked when what she found accomplished quite the opposite. Belasco’s feverish and chaotic writings revealed that he believed himself to be the chosen of these elder gods. He was convinced that they had endowed him with the ability to spawn a new race of demons to rule the earth. His seed need only find purchase. Illyana felt fear tighten in her stomach as she read what he intended. Before she could react, she realized he was in the room with her. He leapt upon her and his strength surprised her. When the moonlight hit his face she saw him clearly. His teeth had become fangs, his hands claws and his forehead had cracked and erupted giving way to two thumb sized horns. She felt his clawed hands trying to rip at her clothes and she screamed when she realized that he now possessed a tail that had encircled her waist. The thing had skin like a red eel and pulled her body close to his. She somehow managed to push him away and fell to the ground. He extended his right arm and grabbed her by the neck drawing her to her feet with ease. He looked her in the eyes and demanded that she stop struggling. His voice was much changed too, not just the tenor, but the tone: he was mad. Illyana’s vision blurred as she began to suffocate.
Then before she could truly grasp what was happening, the circle of power once again appeared at her feet. This time it ascended so rapidly that Belasco could not pull his arm away in time. The circle swept up past Illyana’s face severing his arm near the shoulder. The next thing she knew she was knee deep in the snow. She looked up and recognized the building in front of her at once: her home back in Russia. She managed to pry the clawed fingers of her master from her throat. When it came free she took large lustful gasps of air and collapsed in the snow, ignoring the cold.
As her breathing slowed she regained her feet. As she brushed snow from her thin clothing, she saw an image form her nightmares emerge from the house. It was the man who had grabbed her brother Mikhail all those years ago. But the face . . . it was exactly the same; untouched by age. Past him, in the doorway, she could see that chalk outlines and still-wet pools of blood marking were her parents had been killed. With the kidnapper were two police officers. They were laughing along with him as if they had just shared some fine joke. Illyana’s rage blinded her and in the same moment the man noticed her. The look on his face showed he did not recognize her. He motioned towards her and said something to the police that made them laugh even harder.
She looked down at her feet were the severed arm of her master lay. She noticed that tears had begun streaming down from her face and were falling on the limb which steamed in the snow. She reached down and grabbed the arm lacing her fingers around the wrist bearing the blood stones. When she did, she felt a surge of power. The arm became immediately engulfed in flames. The flames burned hot and when they faded in Illyana’s hand was an intricate and terrible sword. The pommel bore the five stones in its handle. She turned to face the men on the porch of her home. She killed them were they stood and the dark blade asked for more.
Powers:
Magik has the ability to cast spells as well as having the ability to teleport across space. She has exhibited the ability to teleport through time as well, but has not yet mastered this ability. In addition she possesses a bracelet that bears five Bloodstones. These grant her access to more spells and more significantly, the bracelet transforms into a mystical sword and armor. Magik calls the sword her “Soulblade” as it is powered by the souls of those five poor servant-girls Belasco sacrificed to make it. When she summons the sword, armor appears spreading over her left arm.
