Thank you Charles, I couldn't do it without your inspiration.

I was trying to portray the disconnect between the generation that the Patriots are and the generation that grew up during the Iron Age. The second A-Squad see The Patriots as heroes yes, but they are not their heroes. So, The Patriots and A-squad are pretty much always going to clash horns.

It helps that JWIII actually has the kind of "eccentric millionaire patron of superheroes" reputation George Timons had. How airtight is it? Pretty airtight since he's actually helped a few superheroes WITH NO DOWNSIDE.

(As much as it pains him)

American Avenger II

One of JWIII androids. Pretty similar to the original American Avenger except the killing is kept away from the other team members since they aren't the hardened criminals that the original A-Squad was.

Evil or good guy with control codes?

Neolith

Though he dresses in traditional Huli fashion, he is the most well read and perhaps intelligent member of the team. He is a voracious reader and takes a real interest in people. Though his specialty isn't in science or engineering. He prefers philosophy and economics. He can also insult you in any language of your choosing.

I like him. A nice use of an underused area of the world.

Phantom Works

Kyle actually doesn't like Ultimatum of all the Patriots, mainly because when they first met Ultimatum said 'Hey aren't you Captain Tetanus'.

Yes, the 90s were a bad time to grow up for revering Ultimatum too since the early Ultimatum also came off as incredibly STUPID. Still, a nice reminder that most children of the 90s considered the Patriots to be heroes of a bygone era.

Oddly, they'd probably recognize Valkyrie, Angel Girl, Black Wing II, and Lucien Drake as the only active heroes of "their" era.
Balloon Buster

Jameika Greene is probably either crazy or has a death wish. Jameika always wanted to be a pilot, being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes put a clamp on being a professional pilot. That didn't stop her, by hook or crook she became a crop dusting pilot. All the better to emulate her hero, Baron Manfred von Richthofen. While crop dusting Jameika practiced all the aerial tricks that he read about. Stalls, barrel rolls , cobra rolls, and extremely low flying all with the chance that Jacob could go hypoglycemic at any time.

I like her! An excellent use of a common ailment. I also like the Richtofen angles. He's got a surprisingly large superhero following.
Aspara

Aspara is bright, bubbly, and wears her heart on her sleeve. Though she is smart, she can be a bit scatter brained at times. She can fly and alter her density to be as wispy as a light cloud or as hard as a diamond. This grants her a degree of super strength and durability when in harder density. The real reason Aspara joined the team is to rebel against her parents. Aspara is really the emotional center of the team.

Ah, the team heart. I like her already.

Distortion

He who fights crime with the power of rock. No, really. Distortion is a 6'5" punk rocker with his multicolored liberty spikes adding another 7 inches to his height. Pierced, tattooed and dressed in a spiked leather jacket, plaid pants, and combat boots Distortion cuts an intimidating profile. Slung over his shoulder is a beat up stratocaster. This is the source of his powers and playing power chords on it can produce many effects. Sonic blasts, bursts of light and color, and vertigo inducing wails are just some of the tricks it can do. Distortion is brash, anti-authority, and confrontational.

Amusingly, I can see Amplitude's kids going after him just for the sake of having a themed villain to fight. Poor Amplitude, himself, is now getting too old for the profession (all the drugs and beatings he's taken haven't helped his career).
Aftermath

After it was revealed to the public just who they were really working for, the A-Squad attacked any HoS installation they could find. They destroyed American Avenger II. They soon came in contact with the Patriots who feared that they might turn into another Psychotic 7. Suffice to say the two teams didn't start off on the right few feet.

Excellent character and I think the team will work out well. I love how it ended.

Nice collection of members!

Commander Cannonshot: Cannonshot was also vain, greedy, and more than a bit cruel, if not truly sadistic. He rarely gave defeated enemies the chance to surrender, and even when he did, fallen foes more often than not had to endure a bit of excess punishment from his metal jacketed fists. Like his teammate Bunker, Commander Cannonshot was a wanted man in many African nations, as he spent his earlier years doing mercenary work across the continent in places such as Angola and the Congo.

There was ample work for mercenaries in Africa during the 1970s through 1990s, even more so than in the real world. PHANTOM, UNITY, and the Gene Nation were all over the place in hopes of gaining the natural resources necessary to fund their terrorism. What was amazing about that 30 year period was that it was really a period of new colonialism because none of those three major terrorist nations were particularly interested in RULING these territories - just exploiting them.

Bizarrely, General Venom's book, New Freedom actually created a bunch of African terrorist groups similar to the House of Serpents too. General Venom rarely knew about any of them but they often ended up with HOS equipment sold to them by the Red Spider.

(Now THAT'S ironic)

What better way to impede your enemies? JWIII is planning to make enemies of everybody so he needs every advantage he can get.

Evil or good guy with control codes?

Quite evil but acts like a good guy around the team before they new the truth. Did all the actual murdering and executions.

I like him. A nice use of an underused area of the world.

Being an ominglot is such an underrated power in a setting with aliens, creatures under the earth, and lost civilizations. JWIII was looking for under looked or young heroes to be his own personal hit squad.

Yes, the 90s were a bad time to grow up for revering Ultimatum too since the early Ultimatum also came off as incredibly STUPID. Still, a nice reminder that most children of the 90s considered the Patriots to be heroes of a bygone era.

Its not that Ultimatum was being stupid. Its just that he suffers from foot in mouth sometimes. He really was just trying to be friendly. He just didn't realize that Phantom Works would find it offensive.

I like her! An excellent use of a common ailment. I also like the Richtofen angles. He's got a surprisingly large superhero following.

She has an artificial pancreas now thanks to JWIII, so that cures her condition. The problem is that JWIII can turn it off at any time.

Ah, the team heart. I like her already.

She was the one that actually stood firm about Jameika going back to prison. Despite the bubbly personality there is a streak of stubborn in her. She also felt insulted since you know Ultimatum and Ashley Morgan never went to prison for the crimes they committed which were much serious then stealing a plane and doing a relatively simple tricks with it. Basically, she has the Patriots pegged as a Good Ole Boys club.

Amusingly, I can see Amplitude's kids going after him just for the sake of having a themed villain to fight. Poor Amplitude, himself, is now getting too old for the profession (all the drugs and beatings he's taken haven't helped his career).

As well as the Dark Undermaster (you don't know how powerful music is in magical terms), Dr. Antiquity, The Hierophant (cause you know the guitar is a major magical artifact and semi-sentient), and the fae try and get it back whom Merlin stole it from in the first place.

Excellent character and I think the team will work out well. I love how it ended.

It was really a bad case of diplomacy all around. The A-Squad was disillusioned and of course The Patriots came with a less than welcoming tone. It could of been a lot worse, it could of also been a lot better.

Dark Undermaster

Robert Kingsley is at a transitional period in his life.

Oh, he's not thinking of leaving supervillainy. After all, those have been the best years of his life. Robert Kingsley doesn't regret his failed relationship with Morgana Le Fey. After all, if she was going to dump him for that slime ball, Bres, then he's better off without her. He doesn't even regret losing the Otherworld, since he feels he was getting a little too comfortable there.

No, he regrets the fact that he didn't have a proper relationship with his children. Jun and Ken Matterson.
Really, Valkyrie and Ultimatum should have seen it coming. Their revolution with the help of King Arthur, the Tomorrow Society, and dozens of other fairy-based heroes they'd assembled was going too smoothly. The Otherworld ultimately runs on tropes so there was bound to be SOME twist at the end.

Really, though, the "Luke, I am your father" twist? That was hack writing at its worst.

In the case of Robert Kingsley, he remembered the affair he had with a mysterious fan at a convention. It was during his youth when he looked less like old Tim Curry and more like young Tim Curry. When he was just a man completely and utterly full of himself. She, of course, was the former Queen of the Two Courts and thus it was perfect for siring half-human children.

After all, who could resist a guy like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVoD1804bkc

Valkyrie, of course, was suitably appalled while Ultimatum just played the resulting scene for all its angsty drama. The Dark Undermaster took a dive during the fight and thus decided to take a good long look at his life. No longer having to worry about not being able to love, the Dark Undermaster has decided he's going to be an excellent father to them both! He's also going to be the BEST evil overlord the universe has ever seen!

His new armor will make him perfect for that!

http://images.wikia.com/elderscrolls/im ... rim%29.jpg

Jun and Ken are completely horrified by the Dark Undermaster attempting to bond with them. Even more horrifying is that the Dark Undermaster has actually started thinking about how it would be a bad thing for the universe to be destroyed while his kids are in it. Before, he assumed he'd just flee to another universe, but now he's actively decided to work against the various horrors.

What's bizarre is that, so far, he's completely sincere in his desire to protect this dimension. He's just gone about it by taking the mantle of Gatekeeper from Merlin (banishing him in the process), making various deals with supernatural entities, and assembling a vast collection of magical items to drain.

He isn't remotely powerful enough to stop Orkus or similar beings but he hopes to eventually become so, a feat that many believe will make him more dangerous than Dracula or the Iron Khan.

It should be noted that although the Praetorians were a tool of a racist authoritarian regime, most of the members were NOT (entirely) amoral or malevolent; most even superficially acted as superheroes after a fashion. Rooivalk (though granted, he was the best of the bunch) didn't engage in needless brutality, spew racist epithets at his foes, or terrorize civilians among the minority population. The first "Red Kestrel" was in some ways an honorable man-physically brave, true to his sworn word, courteous and amiable. Both during his past as a highly decorated military non-com and then as a police officer, he acted to reduce corruption and needless violence. But still, Rooivalk I believed non-whites were generally inferior by birth (though they were "individual exceptions"), African blacks were too uncivilized to govern themselves, and most people needed to be ruled by a strong hand. Ironically, he thought of American blacks as superior to those of his own nation, and enjoyed much of African-American culture, especially jazz.

Orange Matron was of similar character, though she was less pleasant company: her privileged upbringing had left her a bit spoiled and haughty (family wealth, father was a national hero and a polymath genius), but her relative dullness in comparision to the brilliant Captain Orange, coupled with her ongoing physical changes, left her insecure and defensive. Orange Matron was aware her mutations would have counted as "genetic damage" and resulted in segregation or exile had she been a true metaman, rather than her powers being induced by her father's pharmaceutical elixer. She went out of her way to be kind to minority children and senior citizens, but in a smug, patronizing manner. Her temperment was better so long as she was getting along well with Commander Canonshot.

Bunker was about as bad as a Praetorian Guardsman got to be without being moved to the Eugenics Brigade (aside from Balm and the White Warlock), as he would cheerfully murder, loot, pillage, and raze for fun and pay. But even he had standards-Bunker drew the line at killing children or women (so long as they were non-combatants), disdained torture, and considered rape to be "beneath him, or any REAL man". He was an unrepentant racist, and engaged in filthy racial pejoratives, but really did not white people better than anyone else (meaning he was an obnoxious bully to everyone). Bunker could turn on the charm when needed, even displaying a crude form of gallantry, though this was nearly sarcastic. His good looks and easygoing demeanor made up for much.

Commander Cannonshot was a fairly nasty piece of work, especially as he considered any civilians who MIGHT have aided dissidents, insurrectionists, or terrorists to be legitimate targets. But he possessed enough morality to intervene against outright needless murder or carnage. He was certainly heroic when it came to defending the white population against crime, accidents, terrorism and natural disasters as well.

Sky Chief was not really any more or less prejudiced than any typical ruling South African, though so staunchly anti-communist he viewed the entire ANC, Nelson Mandela, and other "agitators" to be merely "Marxist and Soviet dupes"; he was dedicated to maintaining the status quo. Despite technically being a "coloured", as his maternal grandfather was the Indian science-hero Dr. Astro-vee, Sky Chief was officially considered "white" (the family's money and engineering prominence factored into this) and never empathized with the oppressed populations. He made a conscious effort to live up to his "heroic legacy", and acted in a self-consciously "noble" manner. This cut against his natural personality traits, as he was arrogant, officious, and self-centered by nature (Sky Chief's paternal lineage run through the notorious Harry Flashman line). His homosexuality was tolerated by the other Praetorians and the S.A. government because of his usefullness, though Bunker and Cannonshot chronically taunted him about the matter.

Save for White Warlock and Balm, the worst S.A. superhumans were either outright outlaws or assigned to the Eugenics Brigade, AKA the Blood Legion. Racist zealots who couldn't restrain their violent impulses, dim-witted and destructive grotesques (a few created by S.A. experimentations), psychopaths, psychotics, and the like comprised the Brigade, which was spoken of in hushed whispers throughout Africa. Among the most feared members were the smiling cut-throatJolly Roger, the enticing assassinDark Lustre, the monstrous, chitteringChitin-Girl, The Rope(whose mystic lariat once hanged a saint), The Blazing Man, sheathed in white flames,, Rampart (an "ethnic cleansing specialist"), and cold-metal-cladKrugerand. Thankfully their mortality rates were high-the members had multi-million dollars bounties put on their head by the Nestorian state, they frequently turned on each other, and the S.A. authorities found it necessary to liquidate many.

Jolly Roger (II) - Jean Pierre Fitzroy is denied the title of "Jolly Roger the Second" by the French government for obvious reasons and only appears as such on the Superhero Wiki. A French national, Fitzroy admired the original WW2 hero for his style and the idea of being a modern day submarine pirate. Fitzroy, himself, adopted the superheroes' uniform and trademark accent plus many of his mannerisms to the point some people actually thought the man had gone bad.

Born an impoverished Parisian, he got involved in arms trading and diamond smuggling early on. Eventually recruited into PHANTOM, he was surprised to find that his desire to dress up as a superhero and become a pirate was pleasing to the brass. Rhey gave him a heavily modified nuclear submarine and a license to more or less do whatever he wanted. This was when Jolly Roger (II)'s career was born and his life became a collection of atrocities topped with war crimes.

Jolly Roger II was a sick, sick, man who discovered how sick he was only after he found out how enjoyable murder was. His criminal network eventually expanded to include drug dealing, organ-trading, slavery, unlawful scientific experimentation, and terrorism. Jolly Roger was tried in-absentia by French courts for sinking a French nuclear sub and killing its entire crew.

Why?

Giggles.

The South African Praetorian Guard attempted to build better relations with the Western World by capturing him but Jolly Roger always managed to escape custody within hours of apprehension. In the end, the White Sorcerer recruited Jolly Roger after faking the pirate's death. Having deduced the man was completely without morals and willing to work for money, the White Sorcerer decided to make him one of his many "Fire men" who would conduct terrorist activities called "Fire Drills" on behalf the South African government as deniable assets.

Jolly Roger's activities didn't really change despite now being designed to accommodate the White Warlock's "Three Principles" (specifically: kill large numbers of black people, stir up civil wars, and make South Africa seem like a paragon of stability). The Praetorian Guard, to show you how much loyalty the White Sorcerer had to his agents, had orders to kill the pirate on-sight.

They almost did, twice.

Sadly, Fitzroy never managed to be put down by the Praetorian Guard and went on to continue his criminal career after the fall of apartheid. Indeed, it was Fitzroy's submarine that took the White Sorcerer from South Africa after a failed plot to kill Nelson Mandela. Jolly Roger II went onto become a factor in the Algerian Civil War. His star fell, however, to the point that he became a paranoid recluse that lacked all of his earlier piratical fury.

His final fate was recorded in a "Jacob Hunter, AGENT OF THE FOUNDATION" comic cold opening where the artists depicted him being killed by a sniper bullet while trading in stolen French nuclear weapons. Most readers didn't even recognize him despite his trademark eye-patch and cutlass. It was an innocuous ending to a figure who had lived his entire life seeking attention.

Of course, it makes sense when Fitzroy's other inspiration was Francois l'Ollonnais, whom may have been an ancestor of Fitzroy.

Goodness me, but on re-reading there's an awful lot concerning The Praetorian Guard!

It seems to me that after I post my comments regarding these excellent articles, I'll have to start posting something about the Superhuman Resistance which prevented them from efortlessly dominating the country* and the team which took them off the playing field in the end, allowing for an otherwise-peaceful transition to Democracy. I have a few ideas and a name for a non-team - The Freedom Five better known to the Apartheid Regime as 'The Big Five' (generally listed as the greatest domestic superhuman threats to the Regime and codenamed after the five most famous fierce creatures of the Wild in South Africa - Lion (The Cape Lion), Leopard (Stone Ghost of Soweto), Buffalo (isiKhulu also known as isiFuba), Black Rhino (uPondo) and Elephant (Mutter Gasht Karne Wala aka Wanderer) though only one of the Freedom Five willingly adopted that designation as part of his own alias).

I'll have to add that to the usual lengthy list of potential articles competing for my time!

*Besides The Justicars of the era - Aquarius, Black Wing, Robin Hood, Sampson, with Red Jaguar unquestionably foremost amongst them. In many ways the Fall of the Praetorian Guard was his finest hour - it was also effectively the first occasion on which The Justicars pursued a mission entirely seperate from the support of The Patriots (who admittedly disliked the Apartheid Regime as heartily as any, but who were reluctant to set the precedent of a Regime Change mandated by Superhumans).

As a note, the team which removed the Pratorian Guard from the equation during the Collapse of Apartheid are often simply known as The People's Team: the modern Southern Cross Seven claim descent from this unlikely collection of Freedom Fighters, Champions of the Oppressed and old Lefties.

South Africa via Charles Phipps

South Africa's superhuman program was quite advanced, in some ways surpassing the United States. This is due to a private agreement between Project: Icarus and South Africa. In the end, of course, the White Sorcerer took it over completely and replaced all of P:I's personnel with his own.

Interesting, in a rather horrible fashion, is the fact that The White Sorceror is perhaos the only scientist in the world to have benefitted from co-operation with the efforts of Project ICARUS and personnel who worked with the original Eugenics Brigade, when those few survivors of Israel's covert operations in Spain after the death of Franco were brought under his aegis (something only those members of the Government who had in fact been Nazi sympathisers during the Second World War were aware of, since every one of the other MPs would have had kittens just contemplating what the United Nations and more especially the State of Israel* would do to them if they found out or would have just gleefully seized the excuse to order him shot for treason - South Africans had fought and died rooting out the Fascists too).

*One of the few nations South Africa had been able to keep something like normal diplomatic relations with after the imposition of Apartheid.

Thankfully, the Red Jaguar destroyed almost all of the fruits of their research before it became a super power of superhumans.

It was, in fact, the success of King Joseph Quatermain in doing just that which persuade PHANTOM that the second Red Jaguar was too dangerous to be permitted to live a day longer - the ferocious efficiency with which he had guarded Nestoria from their efforts (amongst those of many, many others) had been bad enough, but this display of an ability to triumph over enemies half a continent away was enough to convince them to upgrade him from 'Local Difficulty' to 'World-Shaking Threat'.

It is regarded as quite possible that the force of PHANTOM mercenaries which killed the second Red Jaguar was stiffened by several future members of the Praetorian Guard (survival of operations against a Red Jaguar being taken as more than sufficient proof of extraordinary talent in a soldier). This would, in fact, be one of the only cases of actual co-operation between South Africa and PHANTOM - two powers which shared pariah status, but nothing else except mutual loathing.

PHANTOM threw fire on the group as did UNITY, both groups serving as bugbears to the government and Anti-Government forces.

Ironically PHANTOM tended to make inroads with the non-Government crowd (the less ethical personages from that section of the population, at least), whereas UNITY did better amongst those sectors of the Ruling Classes which despaired of the drain Apartheid and the ensuing Sactions put on their nation - a state of affairs with few precedents in the history of either organisation.

Likewise, the early International Crime League made a fortune in the proliferation of drugs as well as weapons. The ICL, of course, never cared WHO they were selling too.

They still don't: Apartheid and UNITY have come, then gone, PHANTOM was never popular - but the heirs of the ICL in South Africa still take in a profit.

Disturbingly, almost no Metamen were ever recorded as being born in South Africa. Those few who did and became superheroes or supervillains or terrorist/freedom fighters (the line was blurry in places) are VERY interested in investigating it.

One suspects that the Tomorrow Nation share that interest and that the Futuremen showed considerable curiosity themselves, back in the day. Interestingly one of the theories most prevalent at the time was that Ultra-Mind had something to do with the disappearences, given that the Cybernetic Sophist was frequently sighted across the African continent, back in the day.

Ironically, the Monster Brigade itself eventually rebelled against the Comrade due to being sentient beings created by the WS using the late Doctor Moreau's research.

One suspects that the abominible Chitin (previously Chitin-girl, before that being decisively cut all ties with EVERY section of Humanity, was a member of the team who provided the 'Monster' in Monster Brigade.

The WS, a.k.a Julius Fauntnaroy, was smart enough to realize that whites had no particular advantage cultural or genetic-wise but had a Hitler-esque plan to eradicate regular baseline humanity and replace it with superhumans of his own creation ruling over a slave caste similarly engineered for his needs. Of course, he himself would be the keystone of this new race.

So yes, the WS is responsible for a few of the "omnicidal genocide" plans of the past. He's responsible for some of the few zombie plagues HED! has suffered.

Any man with the surname 'Fauntleroy' has a lot to overcompensate for - or at the very least a genuinely compelling reason to REVENGE HIMSELF ON CREATION!

It should be noted the Praetorian Guard didn't just fight communists, terrorists, and oppress blacks. Though you'd be forgiven if you believed that.

Well those WERE the preferred pastimes of half the team (AND The Government they served), after all.

The group actually did have some very heroic moments where they ended up thwarting a Tsavong Invasion of the South African government (you think they only invaded the USA and England?), a full-scale D-Day like invasion of the Merrow from the Sea, and fought regularly against superpowered pirates backed by PHANTOM.

One suspects that the isolated state of South Africa at the time made it a particularly tempting target for those elements of the '85 Tsavong Invasion still in the field - unfortunately for them, they arrived right after South African superhuman elements had been rationalised under the banner of the old 'Praetorian Guard': the ensuing boost to organisation AND morale gave the South Africans even more sand in their gullets than usual. Nestorians called the South Africans many things - Fascist, Racist, Imperialist, as well as a range of epithets both less accurate AND infinitely more rude - but 'Coward' at least was never part of that firestorm of verbiage.

One further suspects that the 'Fantomas de la Mer' who dared call himself 'Jolly Roger' was a prime mover in the regeneration of the Black Sail Brotherhood via their temporary alignment with PHANTOM against South Africa - one suspects that the Black Sail boys generated and refined the tactics and strategies which have helped them keep their heads above the water during this Age of Superhumans in combat against the 'Praetorian Guard'.

Of course, they didn't get much repeat business since South Africa liberally employed the death penalty with supervillains.

Well, that and the fact that The White Sorceror kept using them as proxies against Nestoria (amongst other, less fortunate regimes across the World), cheerfully spending their lives like gold in a pub.

Bizarrely, General Venom's book, New Freedom actually created a bunch of African terrorist groups similar to the House of Serpents too. General Venom rarely knew about any of them but they often ended up with HOS equipment sold to them by the Red Spider.

The mind boggles - one suspects that Liberia has a particularly-sizeable organisation of this sort on it's territory, given that it's most powerful minority are descended from American settlers. African-American settlers, to be precise.

Yes, I nearly drowned my keyboard with my drink when I learned that particular tidbit of fact too.

The Praetorian Guardsman (recruited by ME!)

What a breath of vile air. Good show.

Ironically, the brand of Portugese Imperialism which The Navigator subscribed was downright liberal by South African standards - it advocated assimilation, rather than segregation, and cultural rather than racial superiority. So long as Portugese citizens of African descent toed the party line, they would be fully paid-up citizens whether they were Black, Brown or Sky Blue.

Sadly defeat in the Colonial War rather destroyed The Navigator's idealism - he would become a thoroughly cynical man more interested in avenging himself on Angola, Mozambique and any who had stood in support of those states. Even so he STILL considered Apartheid a blinkered, short-sighted mess of a system and seldom bothered himself with enforcing it.

He was too busy carving into the enemies off or on the coasts of South Africa.

For the most part, South Africa has forgiven Springbok the first and he's actually worked in close coordination with the country's rising superhuman populace as well as his successor.

It helps that a great many of Springbok's missions were overseas goodwill tours designed to try and persuade the Western World to accept South Africa into the family of nations (not to mention take every opportunity to show off his prowess at sporting events): amusingly he tended to argue good-naturedly with Springbok III over whether Football or Rugby is the better sport and seems to be winning the argument (given that Springbok II is a rugby-loving purist, where Springbok III was tempted into heresy by the 2010 World Cup).

He's even gotten to don his mask a couple of more times.

At the 2010 World Cup and the 1995 Rugby World Cup, to be precise. He's STILL gloating over '95, but then so is Springbok II.

It should come as no surprise the Grayhaven family's African branch fought them on numerous occasions.

Including The Big Game Hunter himself, before AND after his Face Heel Turn, since he'd approached the original Captain Africa regarding a little scheme concerning the profitable mass slaughter of certain endangered species - Captain Africa, having long taken an equally keen interest in becoming king of the Great White Hunters, Fair Play and Wildlife Conservation, chased the cad off his property (only narrowly beating his Leopard familiar - 'pet' implies that Darkie was actually TAME - to the punch).

(To be fair, Lord Grayhaven is quite clear that despite what liberties Burroughs took - he actually routinely fought alongside Africans of equal ability to himself. He considers what happens to Captain Africa's bloodline a crying shame as well).

Captain Africa I spent much of his career in Kenya, hunting Germans (during BOTH World Wars) and the Mau-Mau (when he wasn't wandering the continent of Africa trying to prove himself it's reigning Champion and beyond - because he REALLY disliked Germans).

Captain Africa II spent his career in Rhodesia, alternately trying to win the Bush War and keep foreign threats from taking advantage of the situation: he killed himself after discovering that The Monster Brigade was a SHAM created by the man he'd agreed to serve under - and that the latter had even NASTIER pawns waiting in the wings.

Captain Africa III did his best to bring The White Warlock to Justice, chasing him across half a contient and died trying to repent of his ancestor's follies. Ironically it was Peter Quatermain and Stone Ghost who brought his remains back home for burial. I'm informed that the latter's remarks concerning the habits of Rowland Merrick Mills heirs were ... interesting.

She was offered membership with the Patriots but turned it down, considering that she had more work to do in South Africa.

She certainly did - she's become as much of a mainstay of the South African superhero scene in this era as Orange Matron was in her day.

Ah, what an excellent story.

The worst thing about Balm was the fact that he was quite a quietly-spoken and not-particularly-crazy-Christian: he actually felt guilty about the IDEA of killing someone even after he became convinced that his healing powers effectively wiped the slate clean whenever he used them to heal someone who'd suffered his Interrogations. The man was downright PLEASANT to those who caved in, after he'd healed them, and had the audacity to remain angry with him after that.

After all, how can he be held guilty of inflicting harm when there are no injuries? Besides, he is just doing his j-

HEADSHOT.

The Praetorian Guard (as interpreted by Grey Crusader)

One important aspect about the Praetorian Guardsmen was the sheer longevity of the team.

One suspects that it would be longevity via reputation and repeated re-activation rather than simple long-standing: I'd guess there was at least a brief interregnum between the finis of the Pulp Adventurer/Golden Age incarnation of the team and the bestowing of it's name on a highly distinct superhuman unit in the service of the Republic of South Africa.

They coordinated (and soon incorporated) champions from Allied colonial states (most especially Rhodesia)

One suspects that the Apartheid-era Praetorian Guard grew as large as it did in great part due to following this example by actively recruiting exiles from those states overtaken by the Winds of Change which shook the continent of Africa after WWII.

Though technically dubbed the South African Special Defensemen (by some dull bueracrat), they were more commonly known as Praetor's Pride, after their leader Jerome "Preator John" Shieldsmith, a famed S.A. military hero and guerilla fighter.

Might I suggest that Jerome Shieldsmith was better known as 'Praetoria' John- in the style of 'Indiana' Jones?

I just like the idea that 'Praetorian Guard' as a name derives in some part from Praetoria, one of the capitals of The Republic of South Africa.

Following the end of the Second World War, the S.A. government showed surprising foresight in NOT disbanding the team, but instead going further to organize, train, equip, and back the group with official sanction and public relations/propaganda support.

I would suggest that the team was a particular secret of the South African Government until after the Tsavong Invasion (since knowledge of their success might have attracted even more unfriendly attention than the controversy created by the revalation of their Nuclear Weapons programme - The Soviet Union actually WARNED the US about that one.

Most of the truly heinous activities were committed by The Lawful League, which was composed of cold-blooded murderers, diehard racists who considered non-whites to be subhuman, unrepentant meta-criminals coerced or cajoled into service, and real monsters (mostly brain-damaged aberrations caused by flawed super-soldier experiments). Also nick-named the Eugenics Brigade, Brute League, and Bloodletting Legion, they ranked among the more fearsome supherhumans in African history. It is telling the White Warlock and Balm were the only known Preatorian Guardsmen members who also served with the Lawful League (the White Sorcerer led both teams at various points!)

It's horribly fitting that Apartheid-era South Africa's nastiest supervillains and most famous superhuman defenders were assembled by the same man - albeit not necessarily for the same purposes. Ironically Balm would have been seen by the White Warlock as a MODERATING influence on the Blood-Letting Legion, since he didn't particularly hold with wanton violence - just the infliction of hideous pain with blood-chilling calm on top.

Well done comments, Libra!

I'll respond to them more in time but I wanted to say they really helped and I'm eager to hear your comments on the non-SA related stuff.

On a related note, ironically, the White Warlock DID succeed in his primary mission. South Africa managed to maintain its independence from the majority of superhuman secret societies and organizations spread throughout the world at the time. Likewise, he managed to prop up apartheid and its government when foreign (and local) heroes might have torn it down rather easily. Even worse, he managed to make South Africa disproportionately influential during the majority of the Cold War.

To this day, he remains something of a bugbear to the continent of Africa. Thankfully, much like Count Reich II, he's one of the villains who maintains a 0% approval rating. While slightly less infamous than the Red Skull, the kind of people that the White Warlock employs are pretty much restricted to white supremacists and general scumbags of all sorts.

Unfortunately, he managed to escape Nestoria after Red Jaguar killed one of his body doubles. He actually ended up ruling that nation for the better part of a year thanks to the use of nanites and brainwashing. Frankly, it was a miracle it took so long to realize what had happened given he wasn't particularly subtle about his doings - serving openly as Emperor Quartermaine's Chancellor in a Grima Wormtongue capacity.

You can tell what sort of fellow the WW is by the fact that he recruited a cadre of associates who are still doing his business in Nestoria, focusing on the idea that Nestorians should ethnically cleanse the rest of Africa and build their own United States-esque superpower.

Bunker

A brute with tungsten-hard skin and massive fists which could dent tank armor, Bunker was decked out in patriotic South African colors, but was not a native Afrikaaner. His actual nationality was never known, but he was a wanted criminal across most of Africa for war crimes, murder, grand theft, and numerous other felonies. While a foul-mouthed and obnoxious racist, Bunker could be almost disturbingly soft-spoken and well-behaved around women and children, even if they were black.

You'll be charmed to know that, tough and powerful as Bunker was, he was STILL only in the Top 10 (and not the Top 5) most powerful being in South Africa - Orange Matron and the Lady of the Southern Cross both exceeded him in sheer power (albeit the latter couldn't beat him in a straight contest of physical strength).

Neither was particularly fond of him or his "Thuggery."

I'm also informed that he's still the victim of the 'Longest Villain Punt' in history to date - Sampson and Aquarius got a hold of him in Cape Town, then landed him in Cairo, an entire continent away. Bunker spent months in traction after that one and had to spend his first year of independent service after the Fall of Praetorian Guard repaying the Red King for treatments administered.

The Orange Matron

The daughter of the famed WW II hero Commander Orange, she was the oldest and longest serving member of the team, having served alongside her father as the Orange Girl (and later Orange Maiden). Enhanced strength, durability, and reflexes complimented a limited power to manipulate her personal density and gravity (allowing her to '"fly" and deliver jackhammer hard blows). She was a child of privilege and convinced of white superiority mostly due to upbringing. While mostly a decent sort otherwise, Orange Matron could be ill-tempered, especially as she grew older and began losing her youthful looks and sex appeal; her metaman condition was progressive, and she grew more muscular, more imposing, and nearly crimson hued as time went on, which mader her white supremacist government handlers quite uncomfortable. Longtime lover of Commander Cannonshot.

I would suggest that Orange Matron's father was a Afrikaaner who made his money assimilating himself to the British Empire and through inventions intended to improve diamond-mining techniques which he sold to De Beers at considerable profit. The experiment which led to his debut as a superhero had actually been intended to make life a bit safer for the average miner (or at least make them better able to survive accidents).

Rooivalk/Red Kestrel I

The original South African Blackwing counterpart was a brave and even noble character, but also committed to perserving the cruel apartheid regime. He was convinced that black Africans were not "ready" to govern themselves, and would turn his homeland into a failed Marxist state if they were allowed to rule. Rooivalk was a master of urban combat and counter-insurgency, as well as superbly trained helicopter pilot, fighter, marksman, and athlete. His arsenal included many Blackwing-inspired gadgets, a gliding cape, one-man chopper, conventional firearms, and PHANTOM-supplied weapons.

I would suggest that Mr. Kemp had spirited competition for the position of 'Best of the Bunch' - since both the Lady of the Southern Cross actually never had ANY truck with Apartheid (even during her brief period of service with the team), having had her own taste of South African discrimination (as a woman) and Springbok actually learned his lesson when he accepted that the answers to the uncomfortable questions his career had led him to ask. Though no genius in any way, he somewhat ironically proved himself a wiser man than Rooivalk in this respect.

Still, it's impossible to argue that Rooivalk was the best of those who actually BELIEVED in the Apartheid system (Springbok just accepted it as a fact of life, an admittedly fine distinction, but still an important one as things turned out).

I would suggest that Rooivalk and Stone Ghost spent much of their careers in more-or-less direct opposition to each other (both operating in the Johannesburg area, although Stone Ghost worked out of Soweto and Rooivalk was based in the City Proper).

Sky Chief

A brilliant designer and engineer, Sky Chief piloted an airship which might best be described as flying gunwing, with enough firepower to quell a riot in a heartbeat. The craft was dubbed "Red Skies", while his souped-up, armored hovercar was "Rolling Thunder" (it had a sonic cannon mounted on the hood). No slouch as an athlete or hand to hand fighter, Sky Chief was nonetheless the team's transport and gadget man. A closeted homosexual, his racism was of the genteel, intellectually rationalized variety, but he rarely felt guilt over any of his actions taken to defend minority white rule. He was very generous to "agreeable" blacks and coloureds, due to noblesse obligee and a rather offensive condescension. Unknown to most, Sky Chief was a distant relative to the German science hero Captain Mors, and had adopted his infamous ancestor's tech for gravity-defying purposes.

Ironically his Asiatic ethnicity would have probably been mitigated against by the South African Government declaring him an 'Honourary White' as it did a number of Asian immigrants - unfortunately for Sky Chief his requests that the Government do just that were covertly side-tracked by the White Warlock (who couldn't have one of his minions removing the hooks he'd so carefully placed in them, as tokens of his controlling interests and as tools of control.

Even if he had an even better one to dig into Sky Chief's vulnerables, if the fellow got ideas above his situation.

Commander Cannonshot

A legacy member (as the son of the Golden Age Cannonballer), the "Ballistic Battler" was a tall, handsome, and dashing figure, the gleaming gold and crimson metal mesh of his costume matched by only by his brilliant smile. He was legitimately brave and loyal to his teammates, as well as a cool head in extreme situations. While something of a daredevil by nature, the Commander was bright enough to tone down his flamboyance in combat and serve as a team player. He was often the Praetorian's spokeman, as he was a natural in front of cameras and microphones.

Cannonshot was also vain, greedy, and more than a bit cruel, if not truly sadistic. Despite his father's reputation as a WW II hero, the Commander grew up nearly penniless due to the older man's alcoholism and gambling; he learned early on that heroic reputations alone do not put food on the table. He served with the Praetorians because the pay was right, the S.A. government shielded him from international law, and collateral damage against blacks and "coloureds" (any other racial minorities) was mostly ignored.

Though seen as a womanizer, Commander Cannonshot (who later eanred a promotion to Captain) actually had a long-term monogamous relationship with the Orange Matron, though she was two decades older. He first got involved with the Orange Free State province's favorite daughter because of the Matron's political connections and family holdings, but found there was undeniable chemistry between them. For her part, the Orange Matron enjoyed having him, both as eye candy and the kind of "real man" she had come to idolize during World War II. For her father's part, the stalwart Captain Orange (by then a retired politico turned successful businessman) always saw Cannonshot as a bit of punk and poseur, disliking the exaggerated bravado and preening; still, the thrice-married Captain Orange recognized his daughter's otherwise limited romantic prospects.

Commander Cannonshot was one of the few confirmed metamen on the Praetorian Guard, though his powers were really just more fully realized versions of his late father's: wingless flight, enhanced durability, and the ability to project a "flying wedge" of supercompressed air. As time went on, not even his metahuman skin and metal mesh costume afforded enough protection from his divebomb flights, so S.A. surgeons reinforced his skeleton with chrome steel, making him a human cannonball indeed.

For some reason I imagine that Red Jaguar III particularly disliked Captain Cannonshot, although I'm not sure that I could tell you WHY - perhaps he played a role in the killing of Joseph Quatermain?

Whatever the case, well done Grey Crusader - you've done a splendid job of fleshing out the Praetorian Guard and given me a fine challenge: to create opponents every inch their equals ... and better.
