Kazei 5 for M&M 2e

Postby Dr.Volt » Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:55 pm

Has anyone heard of a setting book called "Kazei 5" by Black Wyrm games? Here's a description from BWG's website: "BlackWyrm Games is pleased to announced the impending publication of Kazei 5, an anime cyberpunk setting from Michael Surbrook. The HERO System 6th Edition supplement is due out in January, and an M&M 2nd Edition version will follow." Here's the link: http://www.blackwyrm.com/

The setting sounds fascinating. I bought Mecha and Manga and really enjoyed it. And this book seems like it might dove tail within that genre'. And of course, it might have some applications within a vareity of supers settings as well.

What think ye?

I just heard an interview for this on Atomic Array and from what I heard you could easily do the setting with Mutants and Mastermind especially if you have Mecha and Manga as a back up.

Both atomic array and accidental survivors had the author on and talked about this setting. Sounds like a blast. Neither show mentioned it was coming for M&M though. That is great news.

Is this book anything new? Kazei 5 was released for Hero back in 1999. Is this an updated edition or a re-issue, or what?

Sounds like it's been revamped for the new rules and improved somewhat from what I have heard.

When the M&M version comes out, I'll be picking it up.

I asked on the Hero Games forums if there will be an M&M edition and it should be out sometime mid-year.

Indeed there are such plans. The manuscript has already been sent over to our "M&M translator." My early guess is that the final M&M book should be in the 280-300 page range, and be ready for the summer conventions.

Of course, we at BlackWyrm encourage buying a copy of each version of the book. And making your entire group do the same.

Not to sound snobbish, but I don't run Hero System. I played it back in the 80s and 90s and have no interest in going back. I have some Hero books that I will not part with but for right now, between Pathfinder, Mutants and Masterminds and maybe True 20 I have enough systems that I'm comfy with that that I don't need anything else.

I will say this as well, when it comes out I'll comparing it to what has been done already in Mecha and Manga. Heck I may just cross reference Mecha and Manga, Metahuman Martial Arts and Kazei 5 and look over my own notes for my own setting of Nu Zu City.

I'm not suggesting you switch to Hero system, just letting you know that an M&M version is on the way. I'll probably pick up the Hero version to last me till the M&M version comes out and just pinch bits here and there for the M&M cyberpunk game I've already started.

I can wait till the M&M version comes out. Iow, I have no desire to get the Hero System version. Like, Phelan, it's just not my go to game anymore. There was a time when Champions was all I played for super heores. Then again, that was long before M&M came along. The Hero system will always hold a place of honor on my shelf. And I still use some of their books for source material.

It is exciting that Black Wyrm is planning to release it mid year. If I'm not mistaken, they have a pretty track record of being on time w/ releases. Agreed, it would seem that Mecha & Manga, Metahuman Martial Arts and now Kazei 5 are a perfect trio.

On a more specific note, does anyone find it interesting that the Kazei author chose to leave out the more advanced virtual internet concept (e.g. Shadow Run, Cyber Punk etc)? The more I think of it the more it makes sense. It probably does lend more to party cohesiveness. Iow, instead of everyone in the group waiting till the decker finishes battling corporate ice they all continue to progress together.

Dr. Volt has a few good points and like him I am content to wait till the M&M book comes out. I have enough material from Mecha and Manga and Metahuman Martial Arts to tide me over; in fact I'm still playing with the latter book. Before M&M Champions was THE go to system for playing superheroes. And even today I'm sure it's a solid system. I just prefer M&M right now and so I'll wait on this and if that means I'll have it for Fur Fright in October rather than Anthrocon in June so be it.

Hey all,

I was a Hero gamer from '82 until 6th Ed. Still a great game, but 6th had enough subtle changes that it is no longer the game I enjoyed so much. So here I am in the M&M universe

About Kazai 5. The setting is very well done if you enjoy that particular style of Anime, which I do. The author has a good knack for translating the feel into a game. If you were planning to create an Anime based campaign for one of the series such as Bubblegum Crisis or Ghost in the Shell (TV) using the Hero system it was an invaluable aid in how to achieve the effects you wanted.

A M&M version would be fantastic, not just on its own, but it will give me a ruler to help translate some of my Hero builds to M&M.
