This is awesome news! Lucas has driven SW into the ground. I'm tired of special edition edits, Greedo shot first BS, Jar Jar Binks and the utter craptastic travesty that is the prequels.

Disney's track record with Pixar and Marvel is nothing but one success after another, with Avengers being utterly fantastic.

SW can only get better with Disney instead of Lucas running things. Though, I'm still holding out for Old Republic movies over classic trilogy movies. :)

Let's not forget that George and Disney have had a very good working relationship for over a quarter century; this isn't the out of the blue move that many are making it out to be.

Does the deal include Indy, as well? Maybe we'll get a Captain America/ Indiana Jones crossover.....

Kit, you have every right to feel bad about that. Because it is an unmitigated disaster for the movie industry and media in general.

Think about this. Disney is aquiring Industrial And Magic, as well as Skywalker Sound. How many movies in the last several decades have relied on those companies as cornerstones of their productions? It's hard to think of a single major production since the 70's that hasn't.

This is a full bore competition crushing move by Disney. A way to gain a virtual monopoly on high quality movie sound and special effects. It's a potential deathblow to the entire movie industry.

The anti-Monopoly laws exist in the United States for a reason. They protect both industries and consumers from outright racketeering tactics by companies who have manuevered themselves into a position of overwhelming ownership and influence over a particular field of commercial endevour.

First of all ILM doesn't have a monopoly on special effects. WETA Digital, Peter Jackson's company which did LotR is very strong. There is also James Cameron's effects shop, Digital Domain, I think it is? Anyway, I think your concerns are totally unfounded. Why would Disney not want ILM doing business as usual?

Seriously, if Warners does Justice League and ILM does some of the effects, how is that not a win for Disney, making some money off your competitor's success? Plus the movie industry isn't like regular competition. Its not like buying say a car where you will likely only ever buy one car for several years. If Disney doesn't make cool movies, people won't go to see them. If ILM doesn't want to play ball, other companies will step up to the plate. I'm sure Jackson is already salivating at the thought of other studios possibly jumping ship over to WETA Digital.

Yep. Includes Lucasarts, ILM, Skywalker Sound, and Indiana Jones. All of Lucas original properties and companies.

Anyway, the 2013 Star Wars Weekends at Disney World this May-June are going to be something else.

I am... cautiously optimistic.

Disney, with the Avengers, showed themselves to be respectful of a beloved property once, hiring a competent director to make something that a load of people liked.

And since they've (apparently) booted Lucas out of the director's chair...

Cautiously.

Optimistic.

I am afraid they are gathering the best talent in visual media they can find (George Lucas, Stan Lee etc.) to ritualisticly sacrifice and raise Walt as some undead visual media king.

In all seriousness I think it could be a good match. I am wondering if they will go with storylines from the books or create their own future for the series. I would like to see the jedi and sith wars on the big screen.

Considering how long those things have been going on the ship might well have sailed on that.

Lucas' lax policy regarding that might well have made it impossible to stop.

I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this. I mean more Star Wars stuff would be awesome, but does that mean we'd loose the Expanded U in favor of new continuity?
