Man, the whole idea of changing the turtles' origin to being aliens just makes me sad..

reminds me of that clip from Family Guy about Stephen King.. when he can't think of another book idea so he grabs a lamp and says it will be about an evil lamp.. and the editor looks shocked, and then acquiesces and says "when can we have it?"

not to say any idea is concrete and all, but didn't he do the "shape shifting aliens land on earth and turn into things" angle when he did Transformers and The Rock?

wait.. that actually was Nicholas Cage? nevermind, just Transformers then.. but still.. feels like sometimes people change things just for the sake of changing them..

So...he may have been talking about the Utroms and not the turtles? Seems iffy, but I'd be totes okay with this if it were true.

aaaaaaahh.. a collective sigh of relief should be roused to douse the tumultous furor that has arisen on 'teh internets' these past few days..

though whether the end result will appease our hopes or confirm our fears, we'll have to wait and see..

my sadness has lightened..

Teenage (presumably these aliens can live into their teens)- Mutant (not mutants, aliens)- Ninja (not ninjas unless they were somehow trained on this planet)- Turtles (not turtles, aliens)

Of the four words that describe these things only one is possible. Why even bother to tie it to them at all?
I sometimes wonder if I've ever made a smart decision.

Because the basic implication is the that mutagenic ooze that turns four tiny terrapins into four terrifying, turbulent, teenage, technodrone thrashers is alien in origin. Like the original comics.

I would like to point two things out.

The first is that Bay is producing the movie. He's not writing it, and he's not directing it, so I find it highly doubtful that the origin story revision was his brainchild. The second is that Bay has stated that one of the original TMNT creators (he didn't refer to the person by name in the material I read, but I suspect he's talking about Laird) is working closely with the writing team to help revise the Turtle's origin story. The explaination might be as simple as 'they were four alien brothers who touched the mutagen and then touched a turtle', which is pretty much exactly the same as Splinter's origin in the '87 series, minus the alien bit. Frankly, there's a lot of ways that this revision can still do justice to the source material.

There are no bad ideas, only poorly executed ones, and knowing nothing else about this project I don't think we have enough context to make a call on whether this idea is being mishandled or not.

Im with BedLlama on this. When I first heard about this from my brother the first thing I said was "Hmm that could be interesting, I wonder how that would happen." Then I went online to see if I could find more info about it only to find a tidal wave of hatred already starting to rise, which seems completely ridiculous to me. I say if he can craft an entertaining storyline than more power to him and count me in for a ticket. If it sucks than it sucks and will not be brought up again. It is all for entertainment at the end of the day and that should be the guiding line. I have no problem with a director or writer putting any take they want on any subject they want, now if it is actually good enough to get me to spend my money on it that is another story.

Also with the name argument Teenage (They could still be their equivalent of teenagers) Mutant (They could still mutate into a turtle like form from being alien, the term Mutant can also just be slang for looking bazar or different from the norm) Ninja (Their fighting style could still be described by humans as being like a ninja, therefor we would just call them ninja) Turtles (Again this would be humans giving them the name and we would just see them as being turtle like.)
