How do you keep track of your comic collection?

Postby Liberator » Sun Jan 23, 2005 8:37 pm

The time has come for me to get serious...and go through the long boxes....and figure out what exactly it is that I've been buying for the past...gulp...20 some years.

How do you guys and gals keep track of your collections? (if you do that is?)

I think I'm going to start trying to put together complete collections of some titles. Knowing I can't afford originals of the early stuff, I'll have to identify the reprints I want to track down, collected editions and so on. See, I'm not so much concerned about the monetary value of a collection, I'm more interested in sitting back one day and saying, "yep, read them all."

My first task is going to be Dr. Strange I think. That should be a pretty good challenge. Lots of different runs and such. Plus, great freakin' art when it first got started!

So, any hints, tips, or suggestions?

Also, any good Dr. Strange resources you can point me to?

Man...my ebay and paypal accounts are going to get one heck of a work out!

I have a very large .doc file on my computer, which I update monthly (or so). It lists all the issues I own, organized by comapny, title, and issue number.

Since I don't collect anymore, I just put them on an Excel workbook, tabbed by publisher name.
... and then the destruction began.

I only have a few complete collections (Doom 2099, Punisher 2099) and then the rest are compilation books. If I DID have a ton of books, though, I'd just have paper stoppers that peek out above the issues (like my LCBG has).
I have been taught by the educational film, "Reefer Madness" that Marijuanna causes errors in space and time. It is a /dangerous substance/.

Personally, I'm more of a reader than a collector. The only stuff I've got that's probably worth more than the paper they're printed on is the first issue of the Micronauts and the final issue of the Champions.

Most of the stuff is still in my mom's attic, but I've got a pretty good idea of which books I've got without doing an inventory.

I'm not doing it to track value in any way, shape or form, I just need to get a grip on what I've got.

Plus, it would be nice to go to a con and not buy a bunch of duplicates for a change.

In order:

Poorly. I have my comics in longboxes, alphabetized by title. That way I can usually find what I want.

Nope. None at all. Just do what works for you.

Essential Doctor Strange. It's one of the series of books Marvel has done, compiling old comics from the '60s into one, black-and-white brick.

Have fun. :)
