Stranger in a Strange Place: Part 9: Witchy Woman
Jon hovered in front of Mr. Infamy for a few moments, slack jawwed as he considered what the man was offering to him. For his part Mr. Infamy said nothing at all, he simply enjoyed his drink allowing the younger man a few moments to fully understand what he was offering. When he tired of it he spoke in an almost bored tone of voice. "Yes, you heard me correctly Mr. Armstrong, I offered to expedite your efforts to return home." He stops to take another sip of his drink, his voice is relaxed, with a semi-friendly tone to it as he continues. "All I ask is that you preform a favor for me before you would leave, it's a very simple transaction really." Mr. Infamy sat back in the couch with a satisfied grin as he finished re-explaining his offer, his demeanor was relaxed and clearly calm. Almost like he already knew the answer to the offer and was simply waiting for Jon to comfirm it.
The look on Jon's face made it seem like he was debating accepting the offer, though when he did speak it showed that he had been considering parts of the offer more indepth. "So what's the favor you want in return."
"I'm impressed Mr. Armstrong, you're not really that well known for your mental prowness but as to your question.." Mr. Infamy causally glanced about the room in a "I don't know, let me think a minute" gesture before standing up. "Something of equal value to me as what I'm offering you but worry not, it wouldn't be something illegal or criminal in any way. I promise, but for now it's exact nature must remain a secret until it would be time for it to be done."
Jon's lips pressed together in response. "Right, like that sounds on the up and up. Look if you can't tell me what the details are, like who's involved and why you want me of all people to do it, or why you'd even take time out of your day to help me out when I dont' know you from the man in the moon, then I'm gonna have to pass on your deal." He'd stayed in the air the whole time and he had no intention of coming down yet. The more he talked with Mr. Infamy the more Jon felt like he needed a serious shower, this guy simply just gave off a bad vibe.
"Unfortunately I can't give you any of that information, yet, but if you change your mind for any reason you know how to contact me Mr. Armstrong." Mr. Infamy responded, almost light-hearted in tone and as he spoke he tilted his head towards the card still held in Jon's hand. Before Jon could respond Mr. Infamy walked towards the bedroom door, opened it and before walking through it he turned back to Jon. "It seems like we concluded this just in time. Have a nice time here Mr. Armstrong." With that said Mr. Infamy walked through the doorway, shutting the door behind him.
Jon flew across the short space to the door only a few seconds after it had fully shut and flung the door open only to discover that Mr. Infamy was gone. Totally, not a single trace of him could be found, even his drinking glass had disappeared. Then there was the door tone, indicating that someone was at the door, quickly followed by the intercom barking to life as the sound of Seven's voice came through.
"Vega, Is everything alright? Security hasn't been able to get any readings from your room in the last few minutes and you've not responded to any calls." Her voice sounded more worried than her words expressed and brought Jon over to the door where he opened it for the mage, a slightly confused look on his face greeting her.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just had a odd visitor is all." He wasn't too surprised to find out Mr. Infamy had somehow managed to block out any of the security features in Freedom Hall to suit his needs, he seemed like the type to enjoy an air of mysterious ways about him.
Seven's face relaxes slightly upon seeing Jon unharmed but her eyes scan the room behind him, looking for some sign or clue as to what had been happening in the room. Before she can say anything her communicator, carry the head of security's voice, came to life. "Is everything alright there Seven?" Forcing Seven to bring a small communicator out and answer. "All clear, I've got Vega right in front of me. Continue scanning." As she puts the communicator away without looking, Seven gives Jon an "I'm sorry" look as she pressed her way into his room though Jon didn't try to stop her even though he could have easily enough.
After giving his room another look over Seven turns her attention to Jon. "So was this visitor someone you knew or was it someone new?" To Jon's ears it sounded like she already had a glimmer of an idea who had been in the room with him, but her roundabout way irritated him. "Someone I didn't know, he had some interesting things to say then left. Plan and simple." His tone was curt and invited no other questions, not that she paid attention to it.
Seven instead focused on what he was saying, not how he said it. "So it was a man who bypassed security like it was nothing and just shared some "interesting things" and then left just as easily as he'd came in?" She didn't like where this conversation was going, if it was him then she was worried for the displaced hero.
It was at this point Jon lost what little of his patience he'd had left, his volume raised to match his previous tone as he lashed out. "Look Seven I've known enough mystical types to realize you know something so just spill it. You've got an idea who it was that was in here talking to me, so say what's on your mind and get out. I'm tired of this game your playing already."
Seven didn't flinch once during Jon's outburst, she held his gaze the entire time and waited for him to finish before speaking. "You want me to come right out and say what I'm thinking? Fine, I think it was Mr. Infamy in here trying to make some kind of deal with you. Probably offering you a way back to your home, it's the obvious answer as to what he could do for you. So what did he want in return?"
Jon's eyes returned the stare Seven was giving him but at her admission of her suspicions caused them to widen in surprise but her recovered and proceeded to pick at her theory. "What makes you so sure it was him?"
"In the last couple years I've dealt with him myself a few times so I crafted a charm that picks up his presence as he'd started to spend a large amount of time watching me work while remaining unseen and I didn't like that extra attention. The moment security notified me your room had blacked-out of the system I immediately suspected him, it's his M.O., checked the charm and made my way here." Seven hesitated for a moment then pointed to Jon's hand, hanging down by his side. "Plus, your holding one of his cards."
Jon looked down at his hand and sure enough, there was the all black card with gold letters across it. "Oh." And after an awkward moment of silence he asked the question that was on his mind. "So who is he?"
Seven's short answer did little to settle Jon's unease about the man. "Trouble."
