Complications:
Disabled: Mortis cannot speak to humans, nor use his hooves to easily manipulate objects.

Loyalty: Mortis is unquestioningly devoted to the Incarnation of Death.
Real Name: Zane
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 184 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Allies: Thanatos often works in conjunction with the other Incarnations of Immortality (Time, Fate, War, and Nature) to stop the efforts of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan) while supporting the Incarnation of Good (Goddess).

Death Takes A Break: From time to time Thanatos needs to return to Purgatory so that he can rest from his work, but doing this causes a backlog in people in need of his service and once he returns to his duty he must work quickly to clear the backlog.

Enemy: Often times Thanatos finds himself having to deal with the minions, plots and schemes of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan).

Relationship: Thanatos is the lover of Luna Kaftan, influential American Senator.

Responsibility: Thanatos is the Incarnation of Death, and as such it is his duty to collect the souls of humans who are in a close balance between good and evil and determine if they should go to Heaven or Hell.

Background: Zane was living a pathetic life with little money when a magic gem merchant cheats Zane out of an opportunity for romance, and in response to the meager use of the prize he’d traded his romance for Zane decides to take his own life. As he starts to pull the trigger, he sees the specter of Death (actually the previous Incarnation of Death) advancing on him, Zane then pulls the gun from his own head and shoots Death right between the eyes. Zane is then visited by a woman who introduces herself as Fate, who insists that Zane must now assume the position of the man he has killed, since whoever kills Death must become the new Death.

Fate then leads Zane to the street outside his home where he gets his first view of a pale limousine with the license plate reading "Mortis"...his Death Steed (as Death rides a pale horse) who can assume the form of a pale boat, a plane, or a pale limousine, as well as the form of a pale horse. Fate then departs and leaves Zane in the care of Chronos, the Incarnation of Time, who then instructs Zane how to use his deathwatch, how Mortis changes form, how to use other instruments of the office Zane now occupies, and exactly what his new duties are; this entails residing in Purgatory and visiting Earth to collect the souls of humans who are in a close balance of good and evil and determine their eternal destination (Heaven or Hell) based on the amount of personal sins they have committed during the course of their life.

In the course of learning the job, he discovers that his coming into the office of Death was not accidental, but was manipulated by a powerful magician (Cedric Kaftan Jr.). Despite being a mortal, this magician has strong ties to the other Incarnations from Purgatory and reveals to Zane that the Incarnation of Fate arranged Zane's destiny for the magician's purpose. There is a prophecy which states that Luna Kaftan, the magician's daughter, is destined to thwart the schemes of the Incarnation of Evil, Satan. Luna Kaftan is thus a target for the forces of Hell and is in need of supernatural protection. The magician, who has done a great deal of research, feels that Zane is the best candidate for the Incarnation of Death to fall in love with Luna and thus want to protect her.

The only way for the magician Kaftan to meet with Death without Satan's knowledge is to die with his soul in balance. The magician chooses to sacrifice his own life in order to introduce Zane to Luna and explain to Zane the circumstances which brought him into the office of Death. The dead magician's plans however seem to go awry. Due to manipulation by Satan, Luna is also destined to die before she can fulfill the prophecy. The magician had used too much black magic for his soul to be in balance and in order to bring it into balance before committing suicide, he has transferred some of the excess evil of his soul to Luna's soul, whom he has assumed to be innocent of evil. However, Luna has a burden of evil on her soul already, and her father's scheme has tipped her balance so much that she is on the course to Hell. To correct this, she volunteers to switch places with one of Death's other clients. By sacrificing her own life to save another, she manages to balance the evil on her soul. Her actions play right into Satan's trap, who doesn't care whether she goes to Heaven or Hell, only that she dies and is no longer a threat to his plots. However, Zane has already fallen in love with Luna by this time, just like the magician had planned, and he refuses to take the soul of the woman he loves.

Now the motives behind the magician's choice of Zane are made clear to him when the other four Incarnations (Time, Fate, War and Nature) approach him and explain that they were all in on the plan. The previous Death could not be manipulated into betraying the duties of his office for love, so the other Incarnations decided to replace him with a young, stubborn man like Zane, who would.

Because Luna's soul is next in the queue, Zane cannot take the souls of other mortals until he deals with hers. He refuses to do so, thereby going on strike and leaving dying mortals in agony, unable to be released by death. As this is not to Satan's advantage, he first tries to bribe Zane, then intimidate him into going back to work. Zane, however, has had a conversation with Gaea, the Incarnation of Nature, who has demonstrated to him the absolute power each Incarnation wields in its own sphere of influence. Zane eventually realizes that the office of Death is unassailable by Satan and that he cannot be harmed within the sphere of that office. As an Incarnation, Satan himself has a soul and is subject to Zane's dominion. The conflict ends in a draw and Satan has no choice but to admit defeat. With Satan's plot exposed, Purgatory changes Luna's destiny and she is free to return to life. Zane lifts his strike, and with Luna under his protection, Satan can no longer interfere with her fate through the means of death.

When it came to Thanatos I took a few liberties, like making Death's weapon transformable between a pair of supernatural pistols and the scythe one would expect the Incarnation of Death to have.

Complications:
Bad With Numbers: Sning is actually quite bad at math, much to its embarrassment.

Disability: Sning cannot speak (though it answers questions by squeezing the wearer's finger [one for yes, twice for no, and thrice for complex answers, or inability to answer (such as a non yes/no question)]).

Power Loss: Sometimes Sning doesn't know anything about a certain topic simply due to never being exposed to that information before (therefore being unable to use its Knowledge Gained Through Experience power).

Weakness: Sning is cold-blooded- that is, its body is the same temperature as the air around it. As such, it is slow & sluggish in cold temperatures, and will die quickly if left in winter-like conditions. It must warm up before he is any good.
Real Name: Norton
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 180 lbs
Hair: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Complications:
Allies: Chronos often works in conjunction with the other Incarnations of Immortality (Death, Fate, War, and Nature) to stop the efforts of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan) while supporting the Incarnation of Good (Goddess).

Relationship: Chronos is the lover of Clotho (the youngest aspect of the three personalities of Fate).

Responsibility: Chronos is the Incarnation of Time, and is responsible for scheduling all human events to make sure everything runs smoothly, and the natural laws like cause and effect are honored. He works most closely with Fate, helping her to fix crossed threads, caused by human error or simply random chance. He also schedules notable births and deaths, important events in people's lives and in history, and makes sure the flow of time remains stable when it is bent, as it is by his allowance that the other Incarnations are also capable of localized stoppages of time. He is also responsible for guaranteeing that the course of history flows as it should and correcting it when it goes astray.

Background: Norton Anthony - a man of about forty – is living a nomadic life, wandering across the country when he meets a ghost named Gawain. After getting to know Norton a bit Gawain asks him to father a child to his widow, Orlene. At first Norton is reluctant to accept the offer but Gawain convinces him to at least meet Orlene to prove her beauty, though the offer of payment for services rendered did also interest Norton as well as Gawain’s family is incredibly wealthy and the sum being offered would set Norton for the rest of his life.

Upon meeting Orlene and spending a few days getting to know her, Norton realizes that she is nothing like he’d expected her to be. In fact she is very similar to him in her outlook on life and mankind’s place in the world and the effect they’re having on it. Eventually Norton and Orlene fall in love with one another and they plan to wed and start a family of their own once Orlene’s duty to Gawain’s family is met (providing them with an heir to the family name and fortune).

Unfortunately Gawain interference with the child’s bloodline, as he’d appealed to the Incarnation of Nature (Gaea) to do so that the baby would actually be a blood relative of his family, caused the death of the child due to a rare genetic condition that wasn’t known within the family (as most men, who were the carriers of the disease, never learned of as they died before it could manifest and Gaea’s meddling accidentally triggered the disease in the baby). In the morning of her child’s death, Orlene commits suicide and Norton returns to his old life, seeking to forget that part of his life and move on.

In an effort to make good with Norton, Gawain first trains Norton how to fight dragons (teaching him how to use a sword as well as fight with his fists) but this was a ruse to stall him until Gawain could offer Norton the office of Chronos, which would allow Norton to rule over all aspects of time. Gawain explains to Norton that Chronos lives backwards in time until the moment of his birth/conception (the ghost wasn’t entirely clear as to which) of the office holder’s previous self, who is still living forwards in time. Gawain further baits Norton by explaining to him that by living backwards as Chronos he could see Orlene as she is alive in Norton’s past, and that is enough to convince Norton to accept the offer.

Gawain then leads Norton to the location where the future holder of the office, Norton’s predecessor, was going to pass the hourglass to Norton and upon touching it he immediately begins living his life backwards in time. Norton soon begins to experiment with the hourglass to learn all of its functions (which is recognized by all the Incarnations as being the most powerful magical device in the world, thanks to its ability halt and/or reverse time) and be as good an office holder as he possibly can be. During this time he travels many millions of years into the Earth's past, led by the Incarnation of Fate, who needs the power of the hourglass to help fix various tangles in her threads of fate, which Norton learns is the bulk of his responsibilities as Chronos.

Because Norton lives backwards in time, his past is everyone else's future, making him an isolated character even among the other Incarnations. Norton also realizes that this will make it impossible for him to have any kind of relationship with the forward-living Orlene and he finally manages to move on past that part of his life, fully accepting his role as Chronos. However, shortly after this Norton does begin an affair with Clotho, the youngest aspect of Fate, as this is often a common arrangement between the two Incarnations but she had not pressed the issue understanding Norton’s grief. This is both awkward and intriguing to Norton since her past is his future and she has the upper hand in the relationship by knowing him far better than he does her.

Residing at the residence of Chronos in Purgatory, Norton is visited by Satan, who informs Norton that while he can travel anywhere in time with his hourglass, he cannot leave Earth. Satan then claims to have the power to travel throughout the whole universe, since evil permeates all of reality and gives Norton some samples of this ability by having him travel to other planets where, Satan claims, time flows backwards, allowing Norton to live normally and to get involved in both a space opera and an epic fantasy adventure. Satan offers Norton the ability to have that power if Norton will grant Satan a favor; to go back in time twenty years and save a man from committing suicide.

Norton goes back in time to check out this young man, but after consulting with the other Incarnations, he is learns that this man is the current office holder of the Incarnation of Death, also known as Thanatos, and that it is Zane's attempted suicide that brought him to that position. Norton also learns that this man is needed act as Thanatos in order to protect his girlfriend, Luna Kaftan, from Satan's mischief so she can go into politics and fulfill a prophecy of thwarting Satan.

However, a relic Satan had given Norton turned out to be a demon in disguise and while Norton went back in time to check out Zane, the demon left him and appeared a few years in the past to prevent Luna from going into politics (the demon gives an incumbent politician an antidote to keep him alive so Luna wouldn't take his place). Due to some of the limitations of the hourglass, intercepting this demon is difficult, but Norton eventually manages to stop it and restore the original timeline. Not giving up on his plan, Satan tries one more by trapping Norton on one of the other planets he’d previously had an adventure on.

Norton, not being sure of how to get back home under his own power, starts toying with the hourglass and travels all the way back to the beginning of the observable universe and all the way to its end (from the big bang to the point where all matter becomes trapped in black holes) and realizes that, since the magic of the Incarnations does not extend beyond Earth, his adventures on other planets were illusions created by Satan, and that Norton had, in fact, never left Earth. This deduction allows Norton to shatter the illusion and thus move to stop Satan.

Norton then learns that the demon that created the last illusion had been attached to him and, once again, left him at a point in the past, two years after the events of Zane becoming Thanatos, to begin a campaign to discredit Luna so she would not win her bid run for a public office. Norton goes back in time to this specific point and uses his hourglass to show the world all the bad things that will happen, thanks to Satan, if Luna doesn't get elected. This shows Satan that Norton is no longer as easily fooled and Satan stops trying to exploit him.

Real Name: Mym
Height: 6’
Weight: 167 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Allies: Mars often works in conjunction with the other Incarnations of Immortality (Death, Fate, Nature and Time) to stop the efforts of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan) while supporting the Incarnation of Good (Goddess).

Relationship(s): Mars has two women he loves very much; the first is the Princess Ligeia, whom he saved and the other is the repentant demoness Lilith, who betrayed Satan over her love of Mars.

Responsibility: Mars is the Incarnation of War, and his duty is to manage all conflicts happening across the planet; from nations at odds to street gangs throwing down with one another and every possible conflict that would go in between those two examples. He works to ensure that human suffering is decreased by a proper application of armed response and that conflicts are handled fairly by those participating.

Background: Mym, an Indian price, defies his father's plans for an arranged marriage, instead joining a traveling circus where he meets Orb, who teaches him to overcome his own handicap of a terrible stutter through song. During Mym’s time with the circus he and Orb fall in love but Mym is soon discovered by his father’s men and after a brief fight they take Mym back to his homeland, but unbeknownst to Mym, he has a daughter by Orb, named Orlene, who Orb gives to a friend to raise while she pursues the magical song known as the Llano. Mym’s father had arranged for Mym to marry a princess by the name of Rapture of Malachite, which Mym was completely against as he loved Orb but after fighting against the magic of the castle he and Rapture were locked in for days on end, he finally realizes that Rapture is worth loving, and so concedes to the marriage. However, a plot to separate him from her by his father for a more favorable alliance with another kingdom results in Mym’s decision to become the Incarnation of War.

Through the course of Mym living as Mars, Rapture takes up a life of her own and decides that she does not need him anymore and eventually leaves him. Satan arranges, subtly, a demoness to be Mars’ new companion, hoping to get Mars in his debt that way. In the end, this backfires and Mars ends up with two loves in his life.

Mars’ ultimate goal was to use his position to ameliorate some of the suffering being caused by war on Earth, and is surprised by Satan's encouragement. Soon Mars realizes the subtle importance of human war and conflict: that under certain circumstances, human suffering is increased, not decreased, by abstinence of armed response. Satan's plan is to have an inexperienced office-holder as the Incarnation of War, such that Satan can manipulate the course of armed conflicts on Earth, allowing some wars through and blocking the progression of others, so that the overall balance of evil in the world is increased.

Satan accomplished the replacement of the previous Mars by facilitating the cessation of all conflict in the world—not only war, but bar brawls and even minor squabbles between children (which also counts as conflict)—every time this happens in history, the Incarnation of War retires and passes on into the afterlife. Mym stepped into the office at a time when global violence was just being recommenced, and thus became an opportunity for Satan to manipulate a naïve Mars. Part of this process was a plot by which Satan managed to trap Mym in Hell. Mym eventually led a revolution of the lost souls and secured an escape route, employing lessons from Miyamoto Musashi's famous treatise; The Book Of The Five Rings, to defeat Satan in a one-on-one battle. However, during his absence Satan had, through his minions on Earth, manipulated the geopolitical situation such that international tensions everywhere are at an all-time high, and the world is on the brink of apocalypse.

This resulted in almost every government of the world adopting martial law as the normal democratic process was eminently non-viable at that point in time. A result of this, and an important objective for Satan, is that Luna Kaftan has become sidelined, unable to fulfill the prophecy that she would rise into political office and stand as a bulwark against Satan’s overall plan.

Mym realized Satan's underlying objective and forced a confrontation on terms that were unfavorable to Satan—he travels to the Doomsday Clock, a signifier of how close the world is at any given time to Armageddon, and employs the powers specific to his office to escalate world violence and bring War to ultimate fruition — Judgment Day.

The crux was this: Satan was not yet ready for the Final Judgment to happen, as the current balance of souls on Earth favored Good — i.e. God would get a greater proportion of the souls that would be lost in Judgment Day, signifying the ultimate victory of Good over Evil. At the very last minute, Satan chose to concede and withdraw his minions from play on Earth (as well as himself from the Doomsday Clock). Once Satan departed, Mym lowers his Red Sword from the Doomsday Clock (which returned the world to a state of relative peace) and began the process of sorting out the mess Satan had left. The most important thing was that Mym learned that his responsibility as War is not to promote war and violence, but instead is to make sure that conflicts are handled fairly.

*Mar’s warhorse Werre, is little more than a normal horse (using Jab’s stats, of course) with the following additions;

Concealment 10 [all senses] (20 pts)
Movement 2 [Air Walking 2] (4 pts)
Speed 10 (10 pts)

Which would make the total cost be 84 pts and makes Werre a rank 6 Minion.
>>>
For Mars' build I took the liberty of adjusting it so that the Red Sword could split into two seperate weapons (mainly to fit the picture I used for him) but I like the idea since it kind of fits the character in a way.

I'm pretty sure a conversation with this guy would give Epitaph all sorts of issues.

I read the "Incarnations" series when I was in college. I really enjoyed the books and I am glad that somebody has finally tackled the characters.

Keep up the great work!

Boy Shock, you keep giving me bits to use on Melissa.

First it was Hellrider, now it's Thanatos.

You're putting together a good list of "folks for Melissa to meet" for me.

Thanks. I first read/listened to the series about 10 years ago (as books on tape/cd) and enjoyed them a lot, then about 8 months ago my finacee' and I were in a used book store and I pointed out that they had a couple of the books from the series in stock and explained a bit about them to her so for various gifting holidays and occasions she got them for me and I got to re-read the entire collection in print, and in my opinion they're still just as good.

I'd been debating on doing builds of them but struggled with the PL (since I didn't want to make them outright X trait characters) but while surfing for images (as I often do to fill spare minutes) I found the picture I used for Thanatos and that got the ball rolling basically and the next thing I knew I had those first three built and ready to post. Fate has proven to be a bit tricky and I'm sure Nature will as well plus there's still Satan to do (thank goodness [pun intended] that there isn't any info on Goddess as I'm sure I'll be ready to beat my head against a wall by the time I'm done).

Real Name: Niobe Kaftan
Height: 5’4”
Weight: Unknown (but always proper for a woman of her age)
Hair: Reddish-brown
Eye Color: Green

Complications:
Allies: All three aspects of Fate often work in conjunction with the other Incarnations of Immortality (Death, Time, War, and Nature) to stop the efforts of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan) while supporting the Incarnation of Good (Goddess).

Reputation (Niobe): The most attractive woman of her generation (and there must be some truth to this as virtually every one of the other Incarnations, upon first meeting her would comment about her beauty and Satan sought for a long while to seduce her and his demoness’ can take on any likeness he wants but he also valued Niobe’s spirit as well as her appearance).

Responsibility: Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos are the three aspects of the Incarnation of Fate, and it is their duty to keep and maintain the Tapestry by making the Threads of Life – from Clotho spinning it from the substance of the Void (creating the lives of people all over the world) to Lachesis measuring them out and placing them (determining who and how they will affect the world around them and for how long) to finally Atropos cutting them (ending people’s lives so that more threads can be added). They also must keep the Tapestry free of tangles that happen periodically (sometimes this happens naturally, as the Tapestry is massively huge, but most times tangles occur due to the efforts of Satan and his plots).

Responsibility (Niobe): To her family, which is somewhat large and complicated by her time spent acting as both the Clotho and Lachesis aspects of Fate (case in point her first granddaughter and her second daughter were raised side by side they are within a year of one another in age – confusing right off the bat right? Let’s not get into her extended family and how they’re interconnected with the other Incarnations at this point).

Background: Around the time of the first World War, a young Irish woman named Niobe has a marriage arranged for her by her parents. Her husband-to-be is a teenage boy (16) named Cedric Kaftan. She considers him too immature for her, but can find no way out of the marriage. Although Niobe at first hates being married to a "child", Cedric's good nature, kind heartedness, and desire to make his wife happy and safe win her over, and she soon falls madly in love with her husband. Cedric shows that he is an intellectual prodigy. With some prodding and nurturing from his wife as well as from his mentor, Cedric accepts a scholarship to attend college and hone his magical abilities. As he matures and finds his niche in magic and wetland studies, he and Niobe have a child: Cedric Jr. With a bright future certain, and wizardry greatness assured, life in the Kaftan house was happy indeed. Sadly a few years later, Cedric learns of a plot to kill Niobe. Seeing no way to avert it, Cedric leaves school, goes home to Niobe, hastily puts his affairs in order, and sets in motion the only way he can save his wife's life..... by taking her place. On the fateful morning, Cedric wakes up to make love to his wife one last time, kisses her goodbye and goes into the woods to face his destiny. Awakened by gunshots, Niobe learns her husband is assassinated as part of a plot by the agents of Satan. She learns not only of the plot, but that she, and not her husband, was the real target. Upon learning this, Niobe's hatred for having her husband's life cut short, makes her vow to make Satan pay.

She is invited to join as an aspect of the incarnation of Fate, three women sharing one physical body. Eager to thwart Satan's plans and to avenge Cedric, she leaves her child with Cedric's cousin and becomes Clotho, the youngest aspect of the three Fates. The three Fates weave the tapestry of life and have disposition over the length of human lives and the pattern they produce. Clotho, the youngest, spins the threads from the substance of Void; Lachesis t he middle aspect, measures the threads and Atropos the oldest, cuts the thread of each individual human. When she takes the aspect of Clotho, Niobe must journey to the edge of the Void without aid from the other Fates and replenish her stock of thread-material.

Because Incarnations do not age, Niobe spends many years as Clotho. She frequently visits her son, who has befriended Cedric's younger cousin, Pacian. Because her lack of aging would be noticed, she takes the form of the grandmotherly Atropos, pretending to be a concerned family friend. One day, the Fates take the two boys to a fortune teller, who gives them disturbing news — each of the boys will have a daughter who will oppose a tangle in the threads of life. However, one of the girls is fated to marry Death, and the other is fated to marry Evil.
Niobe leaves the office of Clotho and returns to mortal life in order to marry Pacian, who has matured while she was in office. She gives birth to a daughter they call Orb, at around the same time that her son, who is now a powerful magician, has a daughter called Luna. The two girls grow up together under the magician's protection. At one point the girls and Niobe go on a quest for powerful artifacts that will enhance their natural talents, and Satan takes the opportunity to send demons against them. Although one of the girls is to marry him, he is not interested in a wife who is not evil. Niobe helps the girls to get through safely, though, and Satan's plot comes to nothing.

One year after the Incarnation of Death is taken over by a new office holder (Zane), the middle-aged Niobe is asked to join the Incarnation of Fate once again, this time as Lachesis. Satan has arranged to have all three women leave the office at the same time, thus making the Incarnation of Fate inexperienced in all three aspects simultaneously. The current office holders hope to use Niobe's previous experience as aspect of Fate as an ace in the hole to prevent Satan's current plot from coming to fruition.

They learn that Satan plans to cause political turmoil in the UN by having one of his minions plant a stink-bomb. They are forced to waste time by investigating the likely minions one by one, but in the meantime Satan is offering aging political candidates a chance at renewed youth, and the opportunity to start over in their careers, in exchange for their resignation from office. He plans to replace them with his own minions, who would work against Luna. The three Fates realize that their inexperience is a liability, so they seek help. They learn that Niobe's son, the magician, can help them—unfortunately, he is now in Hell. Satan cannot prevent them from searching for the magician, but he can make the quest very unpleasant and one of them must risk her own soul in the process. Niobe is worried that Satan will cheat, so she arranges for the Incarnation of War to supervise the contest.

Niobe leaves Fate’s collective body and goes to Hell. She must beat Satan's challenge—a puzzle maze in order to get the answers she is looking for. At the end of the maze, Niobe finds her son, but Satan has cast an illusion over him to make him look like the other demons he has gathered there. She puzzles out the answer anyway — that Satan's plot can be stopped by the Atropos aspect of Fate: as Atropos can cut short the lives of Satan's minions, making his plot futile. Thus Niobe wins the game and is allowed to leave Hell and return to her body in Purgatory.

I'd like to point out that With a Tangled Skein mostly follows Niobe's life and times as part of the Incarnation of Fate, thus the build is geared more towards the skills and advantages she would have and thus the feature where the other two personalities can give Niobe tips on how to do other things if the need should arise.

Real Name: Orb
Height: 5'6"
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Dark Blonde
Eye Color: Green

Complications:
Allies: Gaea often works in conjunction with the other Incarnations of Immortality (Death, Fate, War and Time) to stop the efforts of the Incarnation of Evil (Satan) while supporting the Incarnation of Good (Goddess).

Relationship: Technically Gaea is married to Satan (it's a tad complicated).

Responsibility: As the Incarnation of Nature, it is Gaea’s duty to keep nature in balance and to protect all of the creatures of the world.

Background: It is discovered that young Orb has the gift of conjuring natural music that emanates from things in nature. She sets off on a quest for a magical song known as the Llano, a song supposed to be the most beautiful imaginable. During the beginning of her search, she meets and helps a young Gypsy girl, who was blind, by teaching her song and dance as such most men never see. Orb later joins up with a circus in her efforts to learn more about the Llano, meeting there the man that would later become War, and realizing after his unwanted departure that she is pregnant with his child. Upon having his child, Orb takes the baby, that she named Orlene, to her Gypsy friend with the understanding that the woman would find her daughter the best possible home and pass on the magic ring she'd been given by Orlene's father.

Later on, Orb joins up with a rock and roll band, the Livin' Sludge. Her magical singing allows them to shake off the effects of withdraw as they fight their drug addictions as well as helps them play their music better. They quest together until Orb is approached by her mother, Niobe (who had left her office as Fate to have her with Pacian, thus effectively making Orb the aunt of Luna as well as her cousin through their fathers), in her reassumed guise of Fate (though this time she was the Lachesis aspect instead of Clotho). Orb is then told that she has been selected to fill the role of Nature (Gaea), but that a prophecy foretells that she may one day marry Satan.

Satan, attempting to fulfill the prophecy, kidnaps Orb and attempts to use magic to compel her to marry him but she frees herself with the help of Natasha, a man who has also been seeking the Llano and has learned much of it that was now seeking Orb as he'd learned of her and her own search for the Llano. Natasha teaches Orb the other parts of the Llano as they defend themselves from Satan's attacks and Orb learns that the Llano has the power to control Nature and that she must learn all of it in order to assume her position as the Incarnation of Nature. She also finds herself falling in love with Natasha and decides to marry him.

However, all is not as it seems, as Natasha then reveals that he is Satan in disguise ("Natasha" is "Ah, Satan" backwards) and has been courting Orb according to the terms of an agreement he'd made with the other Incarnations: that he would be allowed to court Orb without any kind of interference from the other Incarnations, but everything he says to Orb must be a lie, or part of his greater lie, until he proposes marriage when he must reveal the truth to her.

Orb rejects Satan's proposal, demanding that he teach her the final part of the Llano, the Song of Chaos, which she needs to become Gaea. He does so reluctantly but warns her that it is a powerful weapon and its effects are unpredictable. None the less Orb sings the Song of Chaos and it results in devastation on a global scale. Orb learns from the previous Incarnation of Nature that the only thing that she knows that might reverse its effects is the Song of Chaos itself and so Orb tries singing the song three more times, with each time only resulting in more destruction. The destruction came in the form of the four elements - Fire, Air, Earth, and Water - so if she sings the song a fifth time, it would appear in the form of the fifth element, Void, and erase the Earth from existence, returning all of existence to primeval Chaos. Thus, the Song of Chaos is Gaea's ultimate weapon; it will unmake all of reality, and Heaven, Hell and the mortal universe will return to the fundamental chaos from which they sprang.

Desperate, Orb turns to the other Incarnations for help. Chronos tells her that he can go back in time and stop her from singing the Song of Chaos, but he needs the consent of all the other incarnations in order to do it. The only one who objects is Satan, who says that he will only give his consent if Orb agrees to marry him. Orb, faced with the impossible choice hinted at in the prophecy, declares "God help me, but I do love Satan" and agrees to the wedding.

Chronos changes the past, and Orb honors her agreement. The wedding takes place in Hell where Satan puts on a grand ceremony. As their wedding vows, the two each sing a song to the other; Orb sings a section of the Llano (the Song of Evening—also known as the Song of Love) which is meant to evoke romantic love, but Satan, surprising everyone, sings a variation of the hymn Amazing Grace —and vanishes. Singing a song forbidden to him, Satan abdicates as the Incarnation of Evil as a demonstration of his feelings for Orb. Having fallen in love with a good woman, Satan can no longer continue to hold the office of the Incarnation of Evil but by following through with the marriage in the fashion he did Satan has allowed Orb to correct her mistake of using the Song of Chaos and fulfilling Orb's prophecy at the same time.

There is a 5th part to the Llano, known as Song Of Chaos but it’s purely an X Trait ability as it basically destroys the world with natural disasters and honestly I wouldn't want to try and build that kind of a power. It is a pure Plot Device effect as I see it.

Gaea is outright powerful, and several times during the series of books it’s said that she is the most powerful of all the Incarnations, aside from God and Satan. And after figuring up her total cost I’d have to agree – she’s the most expensive character I’ve ever built and I’m fairly sure I downplayed her general power but considering she cured the blind, helped drug addicts kick their habits in seconds, rewritten unborn children’s DNA, and altered the terrain of half a country you’re pretty much getting into the heart & soul definition of “PL X” characters and plot driven powers.

Another thing that sets Gaea apart from the other Incarnations is that she has no tools to her office (like all the gear Thanatos carries, or Chronos’ Hourglass, or even War’s Red Sword). Instead her abilities are inherent and by her having that much power proves she is worthy of taking over the office from the previous holder (who gives up her office in favor of the new one). Orb uses the Llano, considered to be the song of power to use her powers so she has to be able to sing and thanks to the many parts of the Llano she can pretty much do anything she can imagine. Funny enough Gaea seems to be the only Incarnation that cannot stop time but given her overall point cost compared to the other Incarnations I don’t really see her needing it.

Real Name: Perry
Height: 5’10” (varies)
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Black (varies)
Eye Color: Blue (varies)

Complications:
Enemies: As the Incarnation of Evil, Satan is opposed by all of the other Incarnations (Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature) as they support the Incarnation of Good (God/Goddess).

Reputation: As the Incarnation of Evil, Satan is thought to be the most evil person in the world. The truth is that he is not, that he actually operates with a doctrine of necessary evil.

Relationship: Satan is married to the Incarnation of Nature, and in fact loves her dearly but due to their offices being opposed they are unable to officially consummate their marriage.

Responsibility: As the Incarnation of Evil, it is Satan’s duty to facilitate evil on Earth because it is a necessary part of the process to determine whether souls belong in Heaven or Hell.

Secret: Satan, like all previous Incarnations of Evil, lie to the demons under his control about having a demon-banishing spell (a lie supported by all former Incarnations of Evil [who all still work in Hell]) as to maintain order within Hell to support Satan’s goal to defeat God.

Background: Parry, an orphan, is taken in and adopted by a wizard who teaches him the benefits of white magic and how it can be used to help others. A musician and adept white magician, Parry plans on following in his father's footsteps. A few years later he is encouraged by his father, the sorcerer, to take a bride and Parry selects Jolie after seeing her potential despite her ragged appearance. Using his unique singing talents, Parry convinces Jolie that he means no harm. Taking her in, Parry begins to teach Jolie the ways of wizardry and they begin to fall in love. With his father's blessing, Parry and Jolie wed and are about to start a life of bliss when they are attacked by crusaders of Christianity. Parry's father is killed in the attack and Parry escapes in bird form while Jolie had gone ahead to warn her parents to go to the pre-determined hidden shelter. Unfortunately by the time Parry gets to town to check on his wife, she has been taken prisoner by the crusaders, who capture Parry himself shortly after he arrives.

Working in conjunction with his wife, since he possesses a magical second sight, he frees them both but not before Jolie is slain by the dying Captain who was going to rape her. Taking off in horse form with Jolie strapped to his back, Parry arrives at the shelter and tries to heal her wounds but is lacking in medical supplies to save her. Parry is forced to watch his wife dies in his arms but due to special circumstances Jolie's soul cannot immediately go to Heaven, so at Parry's request Thanatos binds her spirit to a drop of her blood that was on Parry's wrist. Parry then vows vengeance, deciding that the best way to escape from the villagers is to hide in plain sight, so he joins a monastery for sanctuary as well as a means to destroy the enemy.

Soon after joining the Franciscan monks, Parry discovers that a new order, the Dominicans, are being formed with the express purpose of rooting out evil and heresy. Because of his keen mind and magical prowess (which he uses in secrecy) Perry becomes a feared inquisitor and highly respected member of the Dominican order. During one of his many journeys to stop Lucifer’s campaign of evil, Parry succumbs to the temptation of his ghostly wife Jolie inhabiting a physical body, thus violating his order’s oath of celibacy.

As retribution, Lucifer sends forth Lilith, a demoness, to corrupt him. By using the toehold of his broken oath of celibacy and his own feelings of sexual desire and guilt, Lilith corrupts Parry to evil. His intense desire for Lilith eventually leads him to corrupting the Inquisition itself upon her behest, all a part of Lucifer’s plan to avenge his past losses to Perry. Upon Perry’s deathbed, Lilith admits to him that she truly loves him (something Perry had thought not possible for a demon but is actually possible) and as a result of that confession Lucifer attacks Lilith for betraying him.

Using his last vestige of strength, Parry manages a magical counterattack against Lucifer to save Lilith. Lucifer, surprised by Perry’s effort and taken off guard, is defeated (though Parry's magic was far weaker than that of Lucifer’s, his spell was able to work because Jolie's good spirit (which still resided in the drop of blood on Parry's wrist) was immune to Lucifer's powers). As a severely weakened Parry lays dying with only moments to live, Lilith tells him to claim the office before it finds an other successor; that he has to name the form he would like to assume (he chooses his body at the age of 25). Parry, not understanding what she's asking of him and wanting to honor this last wish of Lilith’s before succumbing to death, does as Lilith requests and is suddenly transformed into the new Incarnation of Evil, taking the name Satan (if he had not claimed the office, it would have sought out the most qualified person for that position [which honestly wouldn’t have been Parry]).

Upon taking office, Parry approaches the other Incarnations in good faith, but was rebuffed and/or humiliated by them since they allied with God, with only Chronos offered friendship. This led to Parry being the enemy with many of the other Incarnations and later on, their successors. Parry was friends with several holders of the office of Chronos, but eventually the Chronos officeholders became hostile to him as well.

All of the other Incarnations naturally expect Parry to be evil by virtue of the office he now holds, when in truth he is not. In fact Parry is not actually evil at all (or at least in the sense that the other Incarnations think that he is) but is simply fulfilling his duty as the Incarnation of Evil and thus fighting against God, his counterpart and he takes no pleasure in causing unnecessary suffering in the mortal world. Parry simply wants to defeat God so that a better way to separate the good souls from the bad can be devised as the old standards are centuries out of date and do an injustice to the people of Earth more than anything else while the other Incarnations obviously believe that Parry's reasons for wanting to defeat God are more nefarious.

Parry also attempted to meet with the Incarnation of Good to figure out how to best sort out which souls belonged in Heaven and which in Hell (Parry had no desire for souls that didn't belong in Hell to be there), but was not successful. The Incarnation of Good was too busy contemplating his own greatness to pay any attention. Instead he strikes a bargain with the Archangel Gabriel: if Parry cannot corrupt one influential individual or her children or grandchildren in order to shift the balance of the world to evil, he must give up his quest. That individual was Niobe Kaftan – a woman who would not be born until the early 1900s, which meant that Parry had to wait six centuries before he could act on his plan.

Later Parry meets Orb, Niobe's daughter who is slated to become the next Incarnation of Nature, and decides to court her in the hope that he could later take advantage of her powers to finally defeat God. The other Incarnations oppose Parry's plan, but eventually they all come to an agreement: the other Incarnations promise not to interfere with Parry's courtship of Orb if he tells her the truth about his identity prior to asking her to marry him. Posing as a mortal named Natasha; Parry manages to win Orb's heart. When she takes the office of the Incarnation of Nature, Perry reveals to her that he is the Incarnation of Evil and asks her to marry him. In a fit of rage, Orb nearly destroys the world with her powers, and in order to undo that destruction she needs Parry's help. Thus she agrees to marry him, and even admits that she still loves him despite his true identity.

At the wedding Parry surprises everyone by singing Amazing Grace, which causes him to vacate his office. With no one to take his place, the office goes to the most evil person on Earth, a cruel murderer and child rapist. After a battle of wits in Hell, Parry eventually reclaims his office, to the relief of the other Incarnations who found that they prefered Parry's doctrine of necessary evil over the murder-rapist's sadistic version. The other Incarnations come to realize that Parry is not truly evil in the traditional sense; rather, he works to facilitate evil on earth because that is a necessary part of the process to determine whether souls belong in Heaven or Hell.

Parry initially becomes depressed as he is unable to consummate his marriage to Orb due to their offices being traditionally opposed. But then the spirit of Jolie, co-inhabiting the body of Orb, comes to him explaining that he and the two loves of his life can occasionally spend time together as long as they do so in secret. In the end, Parry is happy and resumes his duties as the Incarnation of Evil.

Honestly I thought Perry would have more powers but as a re-read the Incarnation series I realized that most of the time all of his tricks were mostly well crafted illusions so that’s what he gets – a high ranking, all sense affecting, illusion power. And plus since he’s a few PLs higher than the other Incarnations that means it’s no small feat to resist them. Perry still does have his old magical power to fall back upon and as I recall he does use it to a point when he’s trying to reclaim his office.

The one thing to remember is that Perry has one thing that give him an edge over the other Incarnations – and that is tons of experience. Perry took up his office about thirty years after the Crusades basically and he’s the only Incarnation that’s still around in modern times (except maybe the Incarnation of Good but since he’s so busy thinking about how great he is nothing else is really shared about him so it’s anyone’s guess really). As such Perry has centuries of experience on how to use the tools of his office, mostly his way with words, as he is the Prince of Lies, his demon servants who follow his every order and plan, and the people on Earth who do his bidding almost as blindly as his demons.

I mean at one point Perry has a demon impersonate him so he (as Natasha) can come to the rescue of Orb just so he could start his courting of her. Then later on he has demons take on the appearance of several of the other Incarnations just to push Orb to test Natasha for demonic taint so that he (Perry) can fake pass his way through them and eventually win Orb’s heart. Have no doubt in your mind folks, Satan is one slick sob in this series.

Real Name: Henry Williams
Height: varies
Weight: varies
Hair: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Complications:
Hunted: The servants of Archimago seek to find a way to control Titan and force him to work for them.

Secret Identity: Titan has managed to keep the fact he’s Henry Williams from any of the heroes he’s fought so far as well as law enforcement.

Temper: Titan has a hair trigger temper and often gets angry when things don’t go his way.

Transformation: If Titan’s magic talisman (that he wears around his waist as the “buckle” of his belt) is taken from him or if he is tricked into saying the magic word that triggers his transformation, Titan will turn back into Henry Williams.

Background: Henry Williams is a Bay City crook who found one of Archimago’s Artifacts which allows him to transform into a massive, burly warrior by speaking a mystical word of power. Titan’s just cunning enough and possesses enough raw power to indulge any fantasy that pops into his head, so far he has yet to be apprehended as Titan has been lucky enough to transform back into Henry and slip away before the police arrive on the scene.

Yeah I know, Arthur Eld did a build of this guy not too long ago and my build here ended up being pretty similar to it as there were only a few things I wanted to do differently with Titan. Overall he’s still just a giant-size jerk with a big mouth on him, someone a PC can hit in the face a few times and not feel bad about doing it.

Real Name: Ben Aster
Height: 5’11
Weight: 159 lbs
Hair: Brown
Eye Color: Brown

Complications:
Power Loss: Quantum energy that can disrupt the energies that Kru’Ru generates naturally, leaving Kid Comet unable to use any of his powers.

Vulnerable: Too many attacks made with Quantum energy can force Kru’Ru to separate from Ben and being force apart in such a manner causes great pain to both of them and can leave them weakened.

Background: Dr. Luke Aster was an astrologist who was contacted by an alien, Kru’Ru, whose body was comprised of energy and needed to merge with a solid bodied being to be able to interact with the universe. It seems that Kru’Ru had been watching humanity for a few months at this point (as his natural form is almost completely invisible to the naked eye) and wanted to help humanity progress in their advancement but saw super villains as a hindrance to that goal and wanted to do something about that problem.

So Kru’Ru offered to merge with Dr. Aster and grant him super powers that he could use to fight villains, and Kru’Ru would be able to help him manage his newfound powers. Realizing Kru’Ru had a valid point; Dr. Aster agreed to the offer, gaining energy manipulating powers that he used to fight crime as the hero known as the Comet in Bay City for a few years. When the Comet died in battle against Grond, Kru’Ru learned that he now needed a host to survive and Ben was the only genetically viable match nearby. Fortunately Ben agreed to the same deal his father had and he took up the identity of Kid Comet. Now years later, Ben continues to protect the people of Bay City with his energy manipulating powers and close friend.

the secret stuff wrote:What Kru’Ru hasn’t shared with Ben, or his father before him for that matter, is that he has no memory of his past life. The truth is that Kru’Ru is actually a member of the Kheldian race (the same race that heroes Stars Fire and Warshade have connections to) and had been a Peacekeeper as well, but at some point he was captured by Ultramind who eagerly began studying the unique life form in his efforts to bring back the Mithran race. The only way Ultramind managed to keep Kru’Ru prisoner was by using Quantum energy fields and it wasn’t until one of them broke that Kru’Ru was able to escape finally and made his way to Earth and eventually merged with Dr. Aster.

The reason Kru’Ru hasn’t shared any of this is thanks to the experiments Ultramind did to him ended up basically wiping his memory so the name he goes by is a hybrid of his home world’s and his own and he doesn’t even know what race he’s actually part of, let alone the fact that his racial abilities have been drastically altered (he can no longer make the transformation into the Nova or Dark Dwarf forms but his energy manipulating abilities have been increased). Of course this also means that Kru’Ru has no idea what a Peacekeeper or a Warshade is, which could end up coming back to haunt him if any of the Warshades come to Earth.

Real Name: Nicholas “Nick” Wilson
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 220 lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Motivation ~Greed: Sportsmaster’s crimes are mostly focused on getting him money, but recognition for his skills are important to him too.

Obsession: Sportsmaster is driven to be the best in sports (which is how he thinks of crime nowadays) thanks to the mental abuse he suffered as a child. So if a hero defeats him, then Sportsmaster will become their rival until he has redeemed himself and finally “won one”.

Temper: When things don’t go his way, Sportsmaster can lash out severely at his opponents and any flunkies he might have hired on.

Background: During Nick Wilson's youth his father, an unnamed executive of Grant Industries, was disgusted by his son's poor athletic performance forcibly subjected Nick to an untested chemical enhancement treatment in a twisted attempt to make him more "manly." Although emotionally scarred by the incident, Nick ended up suppressing his memory of it. He did end up benefiting from the treatment, growing up to become a champion athlete only to eventually lose all of his trophies and awards when a newly implemented genetic test revealed the alterations that had been done to his body.

Nick found himself banned from any kind of professional athletic competition and unable to make any more money to support the lifestyle he’d become accustomed to and his anger turned into a drunken bender that lasted several days, during which he finally remembers his formerly repressed memories of what his father had done to him. Further angered by the fact he’d basically been screwed out of his lively hood by the man who wanted him to win at all costs, Nick suffered a mental breakdown which radically changed his personality to the point the he wanted little more than to use his gifts the only way he saw left to him – crime.

Using the remainder of his fortune Nick contracted Fabricators Inc. to develop some sports-themed weapons and armor for him and soon he was using his Olympian-level physical attributes and specialized equipment to commit all manner of crimes, calling himself the Sportsmaster. For the most part he’s mostly interested in making money but because of that he has been hired by mastermind styled supervillains in the past but Sportsmaster is out to prove he is the best at what he does and his single-mindedness can drive him to extreme lengths if he is beaten by the same person again and again. Several heroes have underestimated him based on his odd criminal theme and come to regret it when Sportsmaster has pushed his rivalry to new heights.

If you couldn’t by this build, I was a fan of the Young Justice cartoon that CN recently decided to cancel (which was a load of crap IMO, one of the best series we’ve had in a long while and ….anyways nevermind) and I saw the pic above and decided to take a try at building Sportsmaster.

I’ve always been a fan of oddball villains and SM certainly fits into that trend but I like how the people who wrote YJ managed to stick to the overall theme of the character but modernize him in a way that wasn’t insulting.

Then the thing was that after I’d finished the build I realized I’d want to see SM go against some of the PCs in the games I run here in the Game Room, thus I needed to come up with a FC Setting history for him so I dug into the character’s history in DC and pulled some ideas from there and it didn’t take me too long to work up something that sounded pretty decent.

Heck I could see Sportsmaster going against the Raven, not winning mind you but I think he could be a decent threat to her.
