Real Name: Sidney “Sid” O’Conner
Height: 6’3” (10 ft transformed)
Weight: 220 lbs (880 lbs transformed)
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Blue (White transformed)

Complications:
Involuntary Transformation: Black Steel will transform into his superhuman form against his will if he becomes extremely angry.

Spoilin’ For A Fight: Black Steel enjoys brawling and will often “play around” with foes to draw out the length of a fight.

Temper: Black Steel is easily angered thanks to his soul being merged with that of a Battle Brute’s, thus it isn’t difficult to enrage him.

Wanted: Between law enforcement and criminal organizations, there are a lot of people that want Black Steel either dead (there is a large price on his head) or behind bars.

Background: Sid O’Conner was just a poor kid from New York who saw joining the Army as a way to get out of there and maybe learn a trade. What he did learn was that he enjoyed fighting and after pulling just over six years in he was dishonorably discharged for striking a senior officer.

Having few other marketable skills, Sid became a mercenary and eventually began working for the Brimstone House. It was a fairly solid gig and Sid liked the pay and chances he got to indulge in his joy of fighting but then the Inner Council came across an extremely rare artifact – a fallen Battle Brute and they decided to try and bring it back as a minion they could control and they randomly choose Sid to be the poor soul who would be bonded to the creature. But when they tried the ritual they’d designed something strange happened and instead of Sid’s spirit inhabiting the Battle Brute’s body his body was transformed into the same kind of metal that covered the Battle Brute.

Using his newfound strength to escape, Sid quickly hid and experimented with his new abilities. He learned that he could transform back to his old self with some concentration and overjoyed at his new ability Sid decided to become a super-merc and used his contacts in that community to find work. Unfortunately his reputation quickly went down the drain as Sid’s love of fighting led him into many fights that his employers didn’t want and soon he was just another super villain who was known for causing large amounts of property damage wherever he went.

Nowadays Black Steel, as Sid named himself, is known for being a skilled fighter who’ll work for whoever is willing to pay him and doesn’t mind if he trashes any heroes, or anyone else that gets in his way for that matter, while he’s working for them. In fact he’s often hired to go after specific heroes so that they can’t interfere with his employer’s on-going plans.

Complications:
Disability: Cinderblok doesn’t speak, but nobody is sure if it’s a matter of his being unable to or just simply not wanting to.

Motivation ~Thrills: Cinderblok finds thrills and excitement in what most people would consider mayhem.

Motivation ~Greed: Cinderblok works for whoever pays his check and doesn't seem to have any higher aspirations besides wanting to be paid and enjoy causing chaos.

SMASH!: Cinderblok’s solution to every problem is brute force. if something goes wrong, hit it harder.

Background: Nothing of Cinderblok’s life before he first made his criminal debut back in 1988, just a week following the Wild Strike in what’s now know as Bay City. Members of the law enforcement community believe that Cinderblok is among those who were radically transformed by that event but for whatever reasons, he chose to use his newfound abilities for personal gain.

He’s worked for anyone willing to pay him the sums of money he wants for his services and Cinderblok doesn’t really ask any questions as he seems more than content doing anything that causes large amounts of destruction. Over the years since Cinderblok has faced many heroes though he doesn’t consider himself to have any personal enemies, just people who tend to get in his way from time to time.

Real Name: Nolan Michaels
Height: 5’ 10”
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Burn Out & Fade Away: Darkstar must use his Draining power every day to sustain himself or else he begins to suffer a -5 penalty to all of his powers every day following he doesn’t feed on life energy. If he were to burn through his powers then he suffers a -1 to Stamina instead.

Motivation ~Revenge: Darkstar feels that Langston Albright abandoned him and left him to the tortures he was forced to live through, so now Darkstar seeks to avenge himself by taking away certain people and things that are important to Albright.

Background: The Albright Institute has been known to take custody of children whose powers are either too out of control or too dangerous to those around them for a few years now. Keisha Nelson is one example, taken in by Langston Albright himself because her family was simply unable to cope with her uncontrolled teleporting and willingly made Langston her guardian.

Nolan Michaels on the other hand was one of the other kinds of children, ones who were a danger to any around him. Nolan developed the ability to drain living creatures of their bio-energy to sustain himself and unfortunately, the young boy was unable to control his powers, resulting in the deaths of both his parents when he was five years old. Nolan was then quickly brought into the care of the Albright Institute where the doctors developed a suit that held his power in check though it deprived him of physical contact with those around him and soon Nolan started acting out in frustration. Mostly tantrums with more yelling than anything else but he showed an early predilection for rebelling against those responsible for raising him.

Soon enough Nolan was started on a training program to teach him control of his powers as well as being taught by a series of tutors that were brought in specifically for the children being cared for by the Institute. It was at this point that Nolan met Keisha Nelson and the two quickly bonded over their mutual love of thumbing their nose at those in charge with pranks (it also helped that Keisha healing powers that allowed her to survive any accidents Nolan had with his powers). Over the next few years the pair became close friends, spending a good portion of their time together. Keisha did a lot to relieve a good deal of the alienation that Nolan suffered from because of his powers and how he had to be treated because of them and despite some hardships overall Nolan was becoming happy with his life.

That happiness was shattered when Taurus decided he was tired of waiting on the Institute to share with the medical community about the effects of Terminus Radiation on human DNA (the old Bull was looking for options in further developing the DNAscent Process) and sent his agents to capture both Keisha and Nolan.

Fortunately Keisha was able to make good her escape by teleporting away but Nolan wasn’t as lucky; he was captured, drugged and then taken to one of the many hidden laboratory/workshops of the Labyrinth where he was subjected to all manner of invasive tests and painful procedures over the following years that slowly turned him from a mostly normal boy who was somewhat scared of his powers and highly frustrated by them into a very angry young man who wanted nothing more than revenge on those he felt had wronged him.

The tests done by the Labyrinth scientists caused Nolan’s powers to mutate in response and he slowly managed to develop a level of control over them until he finally freed himself as the scientists had become more and more lax in the security measures used against him and were unaware of his increased control and power. Nolan took his revenge on everyone he could find in the building, leaving a wake of bodies behind him.

After that first outburst Nolan then settled down somewhat and take the time to get caught up on things that had had happened since his abduction and learned about the program the Albright Institute started for teens afflicted by the Terminus Radiation. Feeling betrayed, abandoned and replaced the angry teen decided that his best way to get revenge on Langston Albright for abandoning him all those years ago, is to specifically target the teens that the older man had replaced Nolan with. Besides, Keisha was part of that group and he needed to pay her a visit as well, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

Thanks.

I've always liked the name Darkstar, mostly from the 90s comic DC put out and of the few Ben 10 seasons I managed to watch I liked the character Darkstar there.

The character idea came to me a little while ago after I'd had a short talk with Keisha's player about making more uses of her complications I started to think about how I hadn't really challenged her in the game yet (as a GM I like to try and do that with all the PCs, that way everyone has some "spotlight time") and I found myself thinking about how she was raised (which was by the Albright Institute for the majority of her life due to problems with her powers from the Terminus Invasion) and figured there would be a couple other kids as well and that could be useful for a story or two about her.

From that I thought about what kind of kid would compliment Keisha, help kind of mold her into the prank-pulling, smart-talking teen she is today (besides how hormones help with those things that is...), and from there it wasn't a huge leap to think that she'd befriended a sullen child whose powers left him pretty much isolated from those around him (making them darkness based is just me enjoying comic tropes). Keisha wouldn't be able to stand the idea of someone feeling that way and would do what she could to help them out. And for a while it worked, then comes the twist in the story and why the character has such a powerful dislike of Keisha and the Institute.

To me Darkstar is one of those characters who could have turned out very different personality-wise if he'd just accepted his powers were screwing him over and treally ried to work to gain control over them. But instead he isolated himself and withdrew from people for the most part, granted the kidnapping and torture aren't helpful but are things that if Darkstar were a PC, could be worked through, but to me Darkstar is a character who's problem isn't the PC but the fact that he can't accept his own faults and try to better himself. He just justifies things by blaming others for his problems and takes his large amount of frustrations out on them.

Hopefully it should be interesting to play out.

Plus, this gives Keisha an arch-nemesis. How awesome is that?

The War For Olympus:

It’s long been known that within the halls of Olympus that Zeus and his brothers, Poseidon and Hades, divided the world in three and amongst themselves after defeating the Titans; Zeus ruling over the sky, Poseidon laying claim to seas and Hades taking charge of the Underworld, with the rest of the Greek Pantheon having their own duties that need to be dealt with on a daily basis. But a time finally came when Hera, tired of her husband’s countless infidelities and using his position as King of the Gods to continue his childish habits, led several of the other gods of Olympus against her husband in an effort to remove him from the throne of Mount Olympus and choose a new ruler of the Gods.

Showing the cunning that has allowed him to rule over the Olympian Gods for so many centuries Zeus realized that there was a good chance that he might not win despite having the support of his brother, Poseidon since both his other brother Hades, and son Hercules had aligned themselves against him, and that much of Olympus would be leveled in the fight. So he proposed an alternative to fighting amongst themselves – instead they would pick human vessels to fight on Earth in their stead and whoever’s vessels were to win would then the patron deity would become the new ruler of Olympus.

All of the Gods agreed that this was probably the best option they had, though Zeus saw this for the advantage it truly was - he could secretly affect the fights between various avatars to favor his avatar over the others. So Hera, Hades, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Dionysus, Poseidon, and Zeus (but not Athena as she now resides on Earth in a lesser incarnation) all commissioned Hephaestus to create a unique artifact for each of them which would imbue the first human being that touched it with certain “godly blessings”.

This is how The Fist of Ares, Poseidon’s Trident, Hercules’ Golden Club, Aphrodite’s Mirror, The Amber Sun of Apollo, Hermes’ Silver Caduceus, The Diamond Moon of Artemis, Hera’s Hearth, Hades’ Helm, Dionysus’ Goblet, and Zeus’ Rod all came to exist on Earth. As for who will be the people lucky enough (or unlucky enough, depending on how one wishes to view it) it is difficult to say given how the artifacts have been spread out across the United States.

Basically what happened here is that I had a number of character ideas that after I’d finished building them I realized that they all could be tied to various members of the Greek Pantheon.

Given what Greek myths say about how well the Gods got along with one another, combined with how many years of comics from whatever company you choose to read, it’s not a small leap of an idea that the Gods would handle the situation in this manner.

That said many of the characters that I've already built so far are heroes, but that's not going to be the case with all of them. You see the Gods weren't too picky as to who actually became their avatars, as long as they follow the directions of their patron (plus it helps that the transforming artifact) implants a subconscious urge to do what they're told) then they can do what they want with the abilities they've gained.

Real Name: Alan Hagen
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180 lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Chosen As Poseidon’s Water Bearer: Before becoming Trieste, Alan led a relatively quiet life that involved his job as a diver and having a personal life. Now that he’s gotten his powers Alan’s life has become more complicated as he tries to protect his friends and family from his foes.

Enemy: Trident (Coral Snake, Trawler, Ultramarine & Steelhead (plus their minions)).

Minion Of Poseidon: As Poseidon’s Water Bearer, Trieste can be called upon at anytime by his patron no matter where he might be and he has to do as Poseidon asks of him.

Reasons Of The Gods: Trieste knows that there is a reason why Poseidon choose to make him his Water Bearer, he just hasn’t been able to get the God of the Seas to share it yet.

Background: Alan Hagen’s life was one of simple pleasure and fulfillment, as he spent his days working in the coastal waters as a professional diver – either doing recovery work for high paying clients or teaching others the basics of how to dive. No matter which he did, Alan enjoyed himself and his warm and friendly personality made sure he was well liked by those he dealt with.

Then Alan’s life was changed when he found a trident made out of nothing but coral that was more durable than any metal he’d found underwater. Taking it back to the surface with him Alan thought he’d make one hell of a finder’s fee off it, but once he broke surface he suddenly had the voice talking in his head.

The voice said a lot of things; most of which Alan didn’t understand since he didn’t understand the language until the voice was using until it was almost done talking, but once he could understand he heard something about being “the Water Bearer” and a “coming battle”, not that either of those really made a hell of a lot of sense to him.

Then Alan realized that the trident had somehow disappeared from his grasp and he had nothing to show for his latest dive, something his current employer wouldn’t care for at all. So Alan decided to push his luck and do a second dive even though his tank was low on air and he’d already used the other tank he’d packed for this dive scouting the location.

Down in the depths Alan managed to find a sunken ship that was somehow mostly still in one piece, a rare find to be sure and he picked through it as fast as he could knowing that he had a short amount of time to work with. When he finally started to return to his boat Alan tasted the staleness of his air supply and knew his time was almost done but he refused to give up and swam as fast as he was able to, which for some reason seemed to be much faster than he’d ever managed before. But despite his newfound speed it was too late – Alan was going to drown, he was almost sure of it but when he succumbed to his body’s need to open his mouth to let air in despite still being nowhere near the surface Alan found that he could still breath despite the fact he could taste the water rushing into his mouth and feel his lungs quickly filling.

Then he recalled the words he’d heard in his mind earlier, the ones that he couldn’t understand but now could. It was then that Alan learned he’d become somehow been chosen by the Greek God Poseidon to act as his champion in a battle that was soon to be happening and that he’d been given certain blessings that would make him the equal to any of the other champions he’d face but otherwise those blessings were Alan’s to use as he wished.

Alan quickly worked out what other “blessings” he’d been given and came up with a way to cash in on those newly gained abilities. Since he no longer needed diving equipment nor needed to worry about the pressure of deep diving he went on a salvagers dream run; hitting several of the more well known downed ships that were unapproachable without some kind of undersea vessel.

It was at one of these remote sites that Alan ran afoul of the criminal known as Trawler and her minions in Trident. After a short fight, with Alan quickly gaining the upper hand since Trawler hadn’t been expecting a fight with an unknown metahuman, he realized that there were other ways he could use his abilities and dedicated himself to using his powers to protect the waterways and the people who lived off of them.

Real Name: Paula Logan
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 137 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Chosen As Artemis’ Huntress: Before becoming the Huntress, Paula led a relatively quiet life. Now that she’s gotten her powers Paula’s life has become more complicated as she tries to protect her friends and family from her foes.

Minion Of Artemis: As Artemis’ Huntress, Huntress can be called upon at anytime by her patron no matter where she might be and she has to do as Artemis asks of her.

Movtivation: Huntress fights crime so that other people don't have to suffer through the loss of family like she did when she was a little girl.

Reasons Of The Gods: Huntress knows that there is a reason why Artemis choose her to be the Huntress, she just hasn’t been able to get the Goddess to share it yet.

Background: Paula Logan had grown up a tomboy in Kentucky, going fishing and hunting with her father since she was able to carry the tools to do such activities. When Paula was ten her father patented a new kind of duck call that ended up earning him several thousands of dollars in profit, which he deftly put back into a few other ideas he’d come up with over his years of hunting experience eventually becoming a blue-collar millionaire off his innovative creations. The senior Logan made sure never to let his family’s wealth go to their head, though he did move them on up in the world (so to speak) and they went from a smaller house that the family, which consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Logan, their two sons and a daughter lived in to a custom built new house on a large enough piece of land that they basically owned their own section of the Kentucky Hills.

Mr. Logan supported his community as well as his family with his hunting supply business, donating to local charities and groups like the Boy Scouts and Explorer Posts as well as funding many of his church’s missionary efforts in third world countries. Unfortunately all the good that he’d done couldn’t save him from a strung out mugger, who shot Mr. Logan simply because he didn’t produce his wallet fast enough. The larger crime was that the murder happened right in front of twelve year old Paula, and when the police arrived on the scene shortly after they found the young girl clutching her father’s dead body crying.

Paula went through years of therapy to deal with the trauma she’d been through and hundreds of hours of various martial arts classes, her own form of therapy she always said, before she decided that she needed to move out of the family home and strike out on her own at the age of twenty-one. Despite the worries of her mother and older brothers (who’d managed to keep their father’s business going and continue to make a large profit) Paula moved to Detroit, Michigan – a radical change of scenery to say the least but Paula at enrolled in a local college to try and appease her mother and get her to worry less about what she was doing away from home.

What Paula hadn’t told her mother was that “college” was a tattoo shop where she learned how to sling ink with the best of them all while expanding her knowledge of the subject of art. Which is what led Paula to the art gallery where she encountered the The Diamond Moon of Artemis, an almost fist sized gem that was on display along with the art work at the gallery showing she had attended with some friends.

All night long Paula couldn’t help but stare at the gem, as a strangely hypnotic voice called out to her to touch it. Just before the end of the show Paula finally gave in and did as she’d been asked jumping as she felt a shocking sensation but she realized that she could no longer hearing the voice so she simply chalked up the experience as something done by one of the artists whose work was being displayed and went home.

Later that night Paula was roused from a sound sleep to find herself face to face with an apparition claiming to be the Greek Goddess Artemis who proceeded to inform Paula that she was now “her Huntress” and that she’d been bestowed with unique gifts that she could use in any manner she wished but that periodically Artemis would call upon Paula to perform very specific duties. Before Paula could even attempt to say anything in response the ghost-like figure disappeared, leaving the young woman with many questions that had no answers that she could think of.

Over the following days Paula began to notice odd things – like all manner of stray animals coming up to her for no reason, her vision getting sharper, her range of hearing increasing, and the things she could smell now….well that’s left best not talked about if you think about the fact that she worked with mostly men. Then almost a week after her late night visitor Paula went out back of the tattoo shop for a break from the scents she was picking up from her co-workers when she heard a pair of girls talking. Looking all around the alley Paula couldn’t spot them, despite her now much better vision and after a few moments she realized that the voices were coming from above her. But when she looked up, all that Paula found were a pair of birds on a suspended wire.

Then she heard one of the birds ask the other if she had any idea why the dark tuffed human was looking at them so weirdly. Paula then wisely decided to take the rest of the day off.

Once she was home Paula spent the next couple hours experimenting with her enhanced senses, learning their limits and figuring out just what she could do with them. Two weeks later the Huntress hit the streets of Detroit for the first time and the Patriarch’s organization quickly learned that they had another foe to deal with.

Real Name: Duncan Summers
Height: 6'
Weight: 190 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Weakness: Like all other Black Court Vampires, Nevermore is vulnerable to attacks made with items made of silver. Any injury inflicted with a silver weapon bypasses his Impervious Toughness and cannot be healed by the vampire’s Regeneration and must instead heal normally.

Weakness: Like all other Black Court Vampires, Nevermore is vulnerable to UV radiation (or as it is more commonly known, sunlight), and after three rounds of constant exposure they suffer a dying condition.

Background: The life of Duncan Summers in the alternate dimension he comes from closely mirrors that of the “prime” one’s life. For many years Duncan Summers fought all manner of super villains as the original Raven and was a long-time member of the Freedom League, often acting as the team’s tactical advisor and realist among the idealists. Then he retired partly because of a very serious injury gained during his last show down with Dr. Sin and to focus on his wife and newly born daughter only for his wife to die years later when Dr. Sin returned from death to kidnap his granddaughter in an effort to make her his heir.

Decades later he would open Claremont Academy and began teaching young metahumans how to control their powers as well as use them responsibly, which would lead to the formation of the Next-GEN. During the course of their adventures the would-be teen heroes all found themselves going to a local club that opened up catering to the youth of Freedom City. In truth it was a front for the returned vampire Lenore, an old foe of Duncan’s somehow returned from the dead.

Her plan had been simple – careful manipulation of the members of the Next-GEN until they were her willing slaves and hold them for ransom so that Duncan would have to submit to her demands of joining her in undeath.

Here is where the dimensions differ; in the “prime reality” the members of Next-GEN were able to fight off Lenore’s mental manipulations and prevent her from transforming their headmaster, while in this version’s dimension they were unable to stop her from turning Duncan. However his will was strong enough that he destroyed her within moments of his awakening as a vampire and save his students. Following his transformation Duncan spun a cover story of his developing a rare skin condition that made him extremely sensitive to being in the sun for any amount of time but he continued to be the Headmaster of Claremont Academy and for a short while it seemed to have returned to normal, well normal for Claremont that is.

But then, only a few months later, the vampire lord Dracula came to Freedom City in search of a bride and he chose Serena Vervain, the magic manipulating student known as Seven. Much like on the prime reality, the Next-GEN objected and tried to stop the Lord of the Vampires but they had little effect and again, when Duncan confronted Dracula he tried a number of gadgets he’d prepared ahead of time (excluding the UV grenades that is) and when Dracula showed he was able to withstand most of that Duncan saw no other option and launched himself at the Lord of the Vampires using his own vampiric abilities.

Needless to say this was a shocking surprise to Dracula and Duncan was able to gain the upper hand and destroy him. But that was his mistake; by killing Dracula in the way that he did, Duncan absorbed his essence which washed away his remaining humanity leaving nothing more than another highly intelligent and powerful vampire. Soon the members of the Next-GEN were turned into Duncan’s vampire spawn and it took the combined efforts of the Freedom League and the Sentinels to drive them out of Freedom City.

In the intervening years Duncan learned much about magic in an effort to increase his personal power, making him a larger threat than any other vampire that had come before him. Many a mage was left dead and drained of blood in Duncan’s quest and he ended up virtually eliminating the members of the Brimstone House to the point that the few surviving members abandoned the organization rather than attempt to face the vampiric mage that now called himself Nevermore. Then something unforeseeable happened – Eldrich and the Lodge formed an alliance, setting aside the differences the organization and the Master Mage of Earth had held against one another for just under four decades to put an end to Nevermore.

After a two month campaign of losing lairs, hideouts, and bases, as well as allies, minions and resources Nevermore found himself forced into a position he’d never been in before – a losing one. Realizing his options were slowly dwindling away as the sounds of the Lodge’s agents drew closer the vampire mage opened a portal to and without knowing what was waiting for him on the other side of it but figuring that it had to be better than what was coming for him, he jumped through it.

Nevermore found himself on a world where things were much different than they had been back on his world. Here his life had taken a different path and Nevermore realized that nobody would easily figure out exactly who he was. A dark smile formed under his mask and Nevermore went about figuring out just exactly where he was so he could get started on building the first of what would be many lairs where he would hatch several different plans as well as recruit new minions to carry out those plans for him.

Now that's a scary build! Vampire Raven with not one but two magic arrays. I'd hate to go up against that guy.

Darkstar is an excellent concept! I like it. Only nitpick. Keisha's last name is Nelson, not Walker. :)
