When the new Avengers team was formed Shannon was determined to join; undergoing intensive physical training to hone her strength and agility to the peak of human ability. She had designed a costume to wear based on Captain America's and created disc weapons that looked like miniature versions of Captain America's shield.

After joining the team as the American Dream, Shannon soon proved herself to be an effective Avenger when the team saved the original Avengers from a dark parallel world. Captain America himself judged her worthy to wield the shield of the alternate Captain and gave it to her to use.

American Dream proved to be an important in the final defeat of Galactus when he came to consume the planet Earth one last time. Along with Stinger and Spider-Girl, American Dream took down Galactus from the inside, surviving the following explosion by shrinking to microscopic size.

Real Name: Reilly Tyne
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 165 lbs
Hair: Red (bald as Darkdevil)
Eye Color: Hazel (Yellow as Darkdevil)

Complications:
Enemy: Kingpin, Venom, Zarathos.

Identity: He maintains a secret identity of Reilly Tyne.

Power Loss: Sometimes the flu, a radiation drain or just his own mental state can cause him lose his powers. If he does, his stats change to Strength 2, Stamina 2, Agility 2, Dexterity 1, and Fighting 3.

Relationships: He is close with Kaine, and his teammates in the New Warriors.

Vulnerable: Darkdevil is vulnerable to holy weapons and on holy ground.

Background: The son of Ben Reilly (the Scarlet Spider) and Elizabeth Tyne, Reilly Tyne had a normal childhood until his parents both died and he went into foster care. When he reached puberty, his spider-powers manifested themselves along with the clone degeneration disease; that sickness that affects all of the Spider-Man clones. It wasn't until he found Spider-Man's first clone, Kaine, that Reilly got help.

Trying to halt the degeneration, Kaine placed Tyne in an old cloning chamber of the Jackel's he'd recovered years before and modified to cure himself of the same disease in the hopes that it would regenerate Tyne's DNA and cure him as well. But the chamber had been set to work on Kaine's DNA and only slowed the spreading of Tyne's disease.

Some time later the hero Daredevil was mortally wounded in Kaine's defense against a common foe, and Kaine took him to the same complex Tyne was at and placed Daredevil in a second chamber he'd had to buy him the time he needed to summo the demon Zarathos. Kaine wanted the demon to repay his debt to Daredevil by healing both of them but Zarthos senses that Daredevil would not survive and instead attempted to possess Tyne. While Kaine fought against Zarthos, Daredevil died and his newly released soul helped Kian to banished much of the demon from Tyne's body. However as a result a piece of both Daredevil and Zarathos remained in Tyne, allowing him to call upon the memories, skills, and guidance of Daredevil, as well as some of the demonic powers of Zarathos. The experience halted the painful degeneration but aged Tyne so that he now appears older than his right age and also gave Tyne the ability to take on a demonic appearance, with red skin, yellow eyes, horns as well as some powers tied to hellfire.

Due to the piece of Daredevil's soul inside him Tyne chose to follow in his footsteps; going to school to learn law and eventually becaming a lawyer. He got a job at Murdock's old firm and began a career as a costumed crimefighter, calling himself Darkdevil creating an outfit that resembles Daredevil's.

However Darkdevil is not like either his father nor Daredevil as he is more willing to use violence against his opponents and has a grim outlook which he plays up more so as Darkdevil. When May Parker became the heroine Spider-Girl, Tyne immediately realized she was the daughter of Spider-Man (and thus his cousin) tried to make her believe she was not cut out to be a hero while keeping his own connection to her a secret. Despite all Tyne's efforts, May did not back down and soon she had gained his respect and the two of them began to work with each other from time to time battling several villains; Crazy Eight, Killerwatt, Funny Face and Mr. Nobody.

On his own Tyne, as Darkdevil, has fought against the Kingpin, the newest Venom and the Goblin Queen. Zarathos reappeared after Venom and the Goblin Queen almost killed Darkdevil and tried to re-establish control but Spider-Girl was able to get Darkdevil to the HQ of the new Avengers, more commonly known as A-Next, in hopes they could heal him. They contacted both the current and past Sorcerer Supremes, Doc Magnus and Dr. Strange, who realized they needed to enter his body and fix the real problem. Upon doing so they found that the wound had unbalanced the forces fighting inside Darkdevil and Zarathos tried to dominant both Reilly and Daredevil. Reilly guided the two magicians in his soul and they helped stop Zarathos and Daredevil and Reilly once again united taking control. After a few months off, Darkdevil returned with Kaine and Spider-Girl to help stop a gang war that had errupted between the Black Tarantula and the former Maggia boss, Silverback. During a final battle on Silverback's estate, it was revealed that the Hobgoblin was the true mastermind behind the gang war and Darkdevil was badly injured after fighting both Silverback and the Hobgoblin. He was saved with several other heroes by Spider-Girl before Mayhem finished off the Hobgoblin. h

Tyne has since returned to crime fighting and his practice of law while continuing his crime fighting career as Darkdevil.

Real Name: Jack "J.J." Jameson
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 146 lbs
Hair: Blue
Eye Color: Blonde

Complications:
Identity: The Buzz keeps the fact he's really JJ Jameson a secret to protect his family and friends.

Motivation ~Doing Good: The Buzz uses his suit in memory of his deceased friend Buzz Bannon.

Relationships: His parents (John Jameson & Ashley Kafka), his grandfather (J. Jonah Jameson), Richie Robertson (his best friend), and his teammates in the New Warriors.

Background: Jack Jameson, or JJ as he is called by his friends, was attending a demonstration of Project: Human Fly by his grandfather J. Jonah Jameson, C.E.O. of Jameson Communications (and publisher of the Daily Bugle). The goal of the project was the creation of a body armor that would grant wearer insect-like superpowers. The staff of the project included Dr. Marla Jameson (Jonah's wife), biophysicist Dr. Sonja Jade and Richie Robertson, grandson of the late Joseph "Robbie" Robertson. It was on this day that JJ first met Buzz Bannon, a former Navy SEAL and the person chosen to use the Human Fly armor. In the following time they became close friends, almost like brothers. Then one day, as JJ and Buzz were in the gym, they got a message that Buzz should attend a meeting on the Project: Human Fly, but it was a trap.

Dr. Sonja Jade turned out to be a traitor who was holding Marla and Jonah Jameson, and Buzz Bannon hostage. She was about to steal the project files and the armor itself. While her minions were going with Buzz to retrieve the armor, JJ and Richie Robertson learned of the situation and triggered the fire-alarm. Buzz used the distraction to overcome most of his adversaries, but during the fight he got a shot in the abdomen and Richie was beaten unconscious. Nevertheless, Buzz managed to knock down all the men and went for the armor, joined by JJ.

Suddenly, the Human Fly entered the scene, rescued the hostages before they could get shot and went after the villains, Dr. Jade was able to get away due to an explosion. Later on that evening Buzz Bannon's body was discovered in the lab. JJ had donned the armor, but couldn't tell his grandfather (who in a fit a rage, accused the wearer of the Human Fly armor of killing Bannon). Although hearing this from a nearby rooftop, JJ knew that the body armor was his only chance at revenge for Buzz Bannon's death. He couldn't tell his grandfather anything about this and so kept it a secret. In memory of his friend he decided to call himself The Buzz.

Later JJ was joined by Richie who knew he was The Buzz because he regained consciousness on that day and followed them to the lab where from a distance he saw Buzz Bannon die. Richie agreed to help JJ with the armor, operating from a van equipped with a lot of electronics. They stay in contact via radio signal. With Ritchie's help, The Buzz was able to find and defeat Jade.

The Buzz soon encountered Spider-Girl (who, unknown to JJ, discovered his real identity), and despite his good intentions, she was leery of him, since she had been reading articles in the Daily Bugle (written by Jonah Jameseon) that Buzz was a murderer (ironically, the same kind of articles he used to write about her father, Spider-Man). Buzz however was able to win her over, and even helped her form a new team of New Warriors, (including Ladyhawk, the Raptor, and Darkdevil) and is currently active with the group.

Real Name: Rosetta & Regina Morgan
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 132 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Brown

Complications:
Enemys: The mob.

Guilt (later in career): Ladyhawk (Rosetta) feels responsible for her sister (Regina) being crippled.

Identity: She maintains a secret identity of Rosetta/Regina Morgan.

Motivation ~Doing Good: Ladyhawk seeks to make up for her father's criminal deeds.

Relationships: Sister, their father (Boss Morgan), Phil Urich, their teammates in the New Warriors.

Secret (early in career only): Ladyhawk is actually twin sisters Rosetta and Regina Morgan, they take turns acting in costume.

Background: Twin sisters Rosetta and Regina were the daughters of a crime lord. They decided to use their skills to fight crime. Rosetta was a great fighter, while Regina was skilled with technology. They sought training from Spider-Girl's mentor, Phil Urich (the former heroic Green Goblin), and soon were ready to face the forces of evil. The twins decided to share one identity rather than design two. They developed a green-and-orange costume very similar to the costume worn by the Falcon before he was given his wings. They adopted the codename "Ladyhawk", and proceeded to become a superhero.

They set up a "rule", that only one twin would use the identity at a time, so that people wouldn't suspect that Ladyhawk was really two girls. Individually, the Ladyhawk twins fought alongside (and sometimes with) Spider-Girl. The twins were very close, and when one was out in the field, the other would monitor their progress over the radio headset built into their cowl. As time progressed, Rosetta began to use the identity more than her intellectual sibling.

Rosetta (as Ladyhawk) joined with Spider-Girl, The Buzz, Darkdevil, Raptor, and Phil Urich (as Green Goblin) in the formation of a new New Warriors team. Regina also joined, but only when her sister wasn't present. When Loki began to infuse heroes with dark energy that made them very hostile, he chose the combative Ladyhawk, and the brainy twin actually had to confront her physically stronger sister, until the spell was broken.

The Hobgoblin, in an attempt to separate Spider-Girl and her friends, brutally attacked the Ladyhawk twins, and left their comatose bodies chained to a fence. His attack left Regina so badly injured she needed to use a wheelchair, while Rosetta blamed herself for Regina's condition. As Ladyhawk she began a vendetta against Hobgoblin and eventually confronted her father about Hobgoblin's actions leading him to send his gang to attack the costumed villain.

Real Name: Brenda Drago
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 125 lbs
Hair: Black
Eye Color: Brown

Complications:
Identity: She maintains a secret identity of Brenda Drago.

Motivation ~Redemption: Raptor tries to make up for her criminal ways now as a hero.

Relationships: Normie Osborne, and her teammates in the New Warriors.

Background: Originally committing crimes, Brenda Drago was forced into the business by her father, Blackie Drago, as he gave her a suit equipped with functional wings (created from technology used in the costume he had worn as the second Vulture) supported by the technical expertise of Tony, her abusive boyfriend, Brenda went on a crime spree as the Raptor -crippling a courier in the process- until she was stopped by the combined efforts of Spider-Girl and the Buzz. While on her way to the courthouse Raptor was freed and recruited into Funny Face's Savage Six an attempt to defeat their mutual enemy, Spider-Girl.

After being defeat again, Brenda felt remorse for her actions and began stealing groceries and leaving them at the crippled couriers doorstep . Brenda avoided capture and lay low as a waitress until drawn into a conflict between Spider-Girl, the Buzz and A-Next leading her to have a change of heart. Turning herself in, she sought out legal council from Reilly Tyne (aka Darkdevil) but was attacked by Mr. Nobody, sent by her ex-boyfriend Tony to kill her.

In a surprising twist of fate, Raptor actually became friends with Spider-Girl, she even began to use her flight-suit as a hero and joins with Spider-Girl several other low-level heroes in the formation of a new New Warriors. She even fell in love with Spider-Girl's friend Normie Osborn, and the two became engaged.

However, Raptor's luck went bad when she was held accountable for her previous crimes by a man from the FBI named Agent Wheadon, who made Raptor join his crime-fighting team of "reformed" criminals in exchange for a pardon. However, Normie bonded with the Venom symbiote, and made a bargain with Wheadon, offering his new powers in helping Wheadon's team in exchange for Raptor's release immediate release.

The new Hobgoblin, (ironically enough revealed to be the original Hobgoblin, Roderick Kingsley) in an attempt to remove Spider-Girl from her friends, savagely attacked Raptor and chained her body to a fence. In the following issue, she was taken to the hospital where she seemed to be recovering.

Real Name: Kevin Masterson
Height: (Masterson) 5'6", (Thunderstrike) 6'6"
Weight: (Masterson) 140 lbs., (Thunderstrike) 640 lbs
Hair: Blond (Masterson) Dark Blonde (Thunderstrike)
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Enemy: Soldiers of the Serpent, Loki, Ulik, Dr. Doom II, Sylene, and the Revengers.

Identity: He maintains a secret identity of Kevin Masterson.

Relationships: His teammates in the A-Next.

Responsibility ~Legacy: Kevin wants to live up to the legacy of his father, the original Thunderstrike.

Background: Kevin Masterson, the son of Eric Masterson (who was the Avenger known as Thunderstrike) was granted the Thunderstrike Mace by Jarvis, the Avengers' butler, as per his father's will. As the mace was made for his father alone, Kevin was unable to use it as his father had. The mace was later stolen from Kevin and eventually came into the possession of Loki, who had created a spell to tap the dormant power within the mace. Kevin leapt into the midst of the spell, absorbing the mace and the magic it contained into his body. He became his own version of Thunderstrike and would go on to reform the Avengers, more commonly known as A-Next by the public, with Mainframe, Stinger, and J2.

Kevin thought that he could use his powers to in some way connect with his deceased father's memory. Kevin made friends with teammate J2, as they both had inherited their superpowers from their missing fathers, and worked well with Stinger and Mainframe. When his team gained new members, he tried to form friendships with them, but he wasn't as close with them as he was his original teammates. Kevin tried to do some good as just his normal self, by volunteering at a housing project with his childhood friend Maria. But he found himself embroiled in a battle with the Sons of the Serpent. However, Kevin couldn't change without revealing his secret identity to Maria. The intervention of Blacklight helped hold off the Serpents, but when the building Kevin and Maria were hiding in collapsed he had to change, making Maria swear to keep his secret.

Thunderstrike's biggest challenge though, was when the Avengers travelled to a dark parallel dimension, where he encountered a dark version of his own father. But when the alternate Eric Masterson recognized Thunderstrike as Kevin, Thunderstrike learned that in this reality, his counterpart had died, not Eric (as in Thunderstrike's reality). The alternate Eric and Kevin bonded, and once A-Next defeated the dark dimension's ruler, Kevin stayed behind to be with his "father".

Kevin returned to his home reality, and rejoined A-Next to aid in their battle with Seth. When Galactus destroyed Asgard, Thunderstrike seemingly lost his powers. He was then kidnapped by Ulik and Sylene, daughter of Loki, as part of a plan to restore Asgard. During the course of the series, Kevin Masterson struggled against his captors, and ultimately was responsible for turning the tables on the two villains. Thena, the daughter of Thor, who had also taken part in the battle against her cousin, was able to restore Kevin's power, allowing him to become Thunderstrike once more. This is apparently part of a plan by Thor to restore Asgard after it was very badly damaged by Galactus, though how this is important to his plan isn't known.

Arrogance: He can get a little full of himself sometimes.

Enemys: The Revengers (especially Ion Man), Loki, Sylene, Ulik, Soldiers of the Serpent, Dr. Doom II..

Relationships: Mostly it’s just his teammates in A-Next.

Responsibility: To protect the world as a member of A-Next.

Secret: Mainframe keeps the fact that he’s actually an android whose electronic mind is based on Tony Stark’s brainwaves from the public.

Vulnerable: His android body is vulnerable to magnetic effects.

Background: After the disastrous final mission of the Avengers, a weary Tony Stark decided to retire as Iron Man. Though, he was also wary that a new danger could emerge to threaten the Earth and decided to create a contingency to prevent that from occurring. His solution was an android based on the style of his Iron Man Armors and imprinted with his own brainwaves that he dubbed Mainframe. However when he completed Mainframe, there was no active Avengers team and so the powerful android remained dormant.

Ten years later Mainframe was brought online when trolls attacked a young man named Kevin Masterson, who was the son of the deceased Avenger, Thunderstrike, Mainframe assembled all of the reserve Avengers and fought to save him. When the fight was over, Mainframe, Stinger, J2, and Kevin Masterson, who had become empowered by his father's old mystical weapon and was calling himself Thunderstrike, formed a new group of Avengers.

Although Mainframe attempted to establish himself in the position of leader, his cold personality and aloof behavior quickly found resistance among the others. Although Mainframe attempted to establish himself in the position of leader, his cold personality and aloof behavior quickly found resistance among the others. He even went so far as to recruit American Dream, Crimson Curse, Bluestreak and Freebooter and inducted them as new members of A-Next without even consulting the others, greatly antagonizing the others and causing tremendous resentment towards the new recruits. Over time, many of the A-Next members became increasingly wary and distrustful of the mysterious armored warrior as they began to notice that he never removed his armor in their presence and it was discovered that he employed robotic duplicates of himself.

In an attempt to restore trust in the group dynamics, Mainframe reveals that he is not a person at all but a sophisticated computer program. The reason why he never removed his armor because it wasn't armor at all but his real body and his robotic dopplegangers were actually his bodies that were destroyed or rendered off-line. During a battle with Ion Man, Mainframe was forced to expend his entire supply of drones to defeat the energy wielding assassin.

Mainframe then suffers a catastrophic hardware crash from scattering Ion Man in the ozone layer and Stinger volunteers to shrink inside him (with the help of her father, Ant-Man) to repair him. Later they learned that whenever Mainframe was severely injured, he would download his personality and memories into a replacement body assembled on an orbiting satellite. They are able to activate a backup protocol and discovers a hidden space satellite that contains an automated manufactory that builds and assembles Mainframe's spare bodies that he downloads his consciousness to after his current body is rendered off-line and manage to reboot the high-tech hero, returning him to active service once more.

Mainframe would continue to serve as a mainstay of the A-Next in several major conflicts such as traveling to a dark parallel dimension where the original Avengers had taken their final mission that had nearly destroyed them; battling the Revengers, a dark counterpart to A-Next; to Loki's attempt at revenge by brainwashing the entire superhuman population and conquering the planet; and a destructive battle against Galactus where the Planet Eater sought to devour Asgard itself.

Complications:
Enemy: Soldiers of the Serpent, Loki, Ulik, Dr. Doom II, and the Revengers.

Identity: He maintains a secret identity of Brandon Cross.

Motivation ~Legacy: Freebooter feels he has to honor his teacher, Hawkeye, with his actions.

Motivation ~Thrills: Freebooter is in the hero business because he enjoys the excitement and challenge of it.

Relationships: Crimson Curse (used to date), as well as his other teammates in A-Next.

Reputation ~Would-be Ladies Man: Freebooter is known for his habit of hitting on any attractive women he might meet.

Background: Brandon Cross was a student of Hawkeye, who trained under him for several years after the terrible conflict that saw most of the Avengers led and permanently blinded the Master Marksman. Shortly after a new incarnation of the Avengers known as A-Next was formed, Brandon adopted a purple and black costume similar to his instructors as the roguish ladies' man and weapons master Freebooter.

One of the Founders of A-Next, Mainframe, almost immediately sought to expand the team's membership and actively sought to recruit new members. Freebooter along with American Dream, Crimson Curse and Bluestreak were chosen as the newest recruits for A-Next. Freebooter immediately sought to romance his fellow A-Next member Stinger but she greatly resented that Mainframe had arbitrarily made Freebooter as a member of the team without even consulting them leading to his flirtatious attempts to be summarily shot down. Despite the resentment of many of the original members, Freebooter's chivalrous nature and remarkable weapon skills led several members to admiring and respecting him, even Stinger reluctantly.

A-Next would find themselves facing the threat of Earth-9907 which the previous generation of Avengers had battled and many had been killed stopping the threat including Freebooter's mentor, Hawkeye who had lost his vision as a result and Crimson Curse also tragically lost her life battling this threat. The tragic loss shook the normally confident and free spirited Freebooter who became much more withdrawn and somber as a result and he dedicated himself towards fighting the forces of evil in her honor.

Freebooter was later badly injured in the line of duty against the threat of Galactus, and convinced Sabreclaw, a member of the Revengers and an enemy to A-Next, and despite many members being suspicious of Sabreclaw, he proved himself during the battle against Ulik and Sylene, the daughter of Loki. Freebooter would subsequently recover and return to active duty with A-Next.

But help arrived in the form of a costumed heroine, called Blacklight (whose costume bore a noticeable resemblance to the costume worn by Photon). Blacklight was able to use her energy manipulation powers to fight the Sons of the Serpent. Despite her apparent newness to the superhero game, she soon showed the Serpents that she was a force to be reckoned with, especially when she demonstrated the power to form solid objects out of black light.

Kevin was finally able to change into Thunderstrike and help her fight the Serpents. Thunderstrike was very impressed with her performance after the battle was won, and offered her a spot on the A-next team, but she declined, preferring to work as a solo hero. But when the Red Queen and her Revengers captured A-Next, Blacklight was quick to lend assistance, using her energy constructs to both free the captured heroes and fight the villains. Motivation ~Responsibility: Crimson Curse feels that she needs to use her magical talents to protect others.

Relationships: Freebooter (used to date), and her teammates in A-Next.

Background: Grandaughter of Agatha Harkness, the young Aerika was a powerful witch herself. She was invited to join the Dream Team, a group of heroes who were going to become part of the new Avengers, A-Next. She donned a costume and an alias in honor of her "sister", the Scarlet Witch, and became the Crimson Curse. As the Crimson Curse, Aerika used her magic to affect the elements of nature, and strove to maintain harmony between herself and order of nature. This led to her having a very level-headed and reserved attitude. Her powers made her an invaluable ally against the many foes that they encountered.

But her biggest challenge was when she went with the rest of A-Next to aid the original Avengers in a dark parallel reality. The Red Skull's heir Doom was going to use his Cosmic Cube to send his Thunder Guard into their reality, but Crimson Curse couldn't allow this so she used her powers over nature to counteract the supernatural energies of the cube. She succeeded, but the price was her life and her sacrifice was a shock to her teammates. But in the end, her death was avenged by the Avengers, who defeated Doom and his minions.

Loving the M2 builds T-man. I never really followed much of that stuff when it was being published, but the characters look pretty interesting. I do find it notable that except for Darkdevil, the characters that end up "beaten and left for dead" by the badguys seem to be the women. I wonder if the writers were consciously aware they were perpetuating the damsel in distress stereotype?

Thanks HH.

I missed them when they first came out too, aside from occasional reading through at the local comic shop from time to time. For me it was a matter of not having enough money to get them in addition to all the other books I got back then. But here recently I picked up a couple packs of comics in a half price bin and had a number of various M² issues that I've been reading through and honestly they're not too bad. Granted they're not great but they're actual superhero comics - the good guys are easy to spot and they fight the bad guys. Plus it's got the whole possible future angle that's always fun to play around with.

Personally I'm glad I don't read comics nowadays, they seem way too depressing from what I'm reading in the few places I use to keep tabs on the goings on in comics currently. I don't mind a bit of realism from time to time with a story line but overall I just find Marvel way to 'real' in the way that they no longer really take me out of reality and into a place where sure the bad guys do horrible things but the good guys eventually get them. And DC.....well I'm just not interested in the way they've handled the Nu52 overall.

So the M² stuff has been a really nice distraction for me.

Plus I've got some villains in the works too so you'll be seeing them soon.
