Re: World of Freedom: Amalgam, M² Universe Builds

Post by EnigmaticOne » Tue Jan 07, 2014 12:46 pm

The most recent comic I've read is Siege which by itself is a pretty fun read - but really just caps off the real issue. Which isn't really Marvel using much realism - their attempts at 'realism' in fact are coming off as very, very, very fake and not really well executed.

Civil War - A lot of stupid decisions, absurd reasoning and an excuse to make Marvel heroes fight each other when they could have litigated the SHRA to death.

Dark Reign - If you wanted to have an anti-Avenger top super-cop, make it Gygrich. That way you have a foe that is yet still totally legitimate and hasn't really done wrong beyond being a total arse largely. It's been lampshaded to death how ridiculous the US government was to put the Green Goblin and known super-criminals in charge. And of course - a good thing about Siege was to pretty much show the consequences.

Point is overall - good writing, characterization and canon keeping have gone to shit in DC and Marvel. Which is why I'm staying away.
Impeach the peach!

Real Name: Cassandra "Cassie" Lang
Height: 5'6" (varies)
Weight: 117 lbs (varies)
Hair: Strawberry Blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
Enemy: Soldiers of the Serpent, Loki, Ulik, Dr. Doom II, and the Revengers.

Identity: She maintains a secret identity of Cassie Lang.

Relationships: Her father (Scott Lang), and she is close with the other members of A-Next.

Responsibility ~Legacy: Stinger tries to live up to the legacy of her father (Ant Man).

Background: When she was testing some new variations of Dr. Henry Pym's creations alongside her father (Scott Lang), Cassie Lang overheard an Avengers emergency call and responded. In the aftermath of helping the other young heroes who answered the call for help she became one of the founding members of the newest generation of Avengers (more commonly known as A-Next).

Taking the name Stinger, Cassie soon found herself at odds with teammate Mainframe who assumed a leadership role without talking to the rest of the group as well as had a membership drive, which resulted in American Dream, Freebooter, Crimson Curse and Bluestreak joining A-Next as well only a few days after the formation of the group.

During the course of her membership in A-Next, Stinger was the one to voice her unfavorable opinions about Mainframe and several of his activities despite the fact she continued to be a part of the team.

Over time Stinger became increasingly wary and distrustful of the mysterious armored man as she began to notice that he never removed his armor in presence of any member of the team. Engaging in a bit of investigation, Stinger was the one to learn that Mainframe employed robotic duplicates of himself periodically.

After she had shared her findings with the rest of the team, Mainframe revealed that he isn’t a person at all but actually a highly sophisticated AI program and tat the reason why he had never removed his armor because it wasn't armor at all but was really his body. This revelation goes a long way to bring the founding members closer together, though Stinger still has doubts.

Following Mainframe’s battle with Ion Man left him with a catastrophic hardware crash it was Stinger who volunteered to shrink down and go inside him (with the help of her father, Ant-Man) to effect repairs on him. It is while inside Mainframe that the duo learn the truth – that Mainframe’s personality and memories were downloaded into a tiny craft that flew to a hidden space satellite that contained an automated manufactory that built and assembled Mainframe's spare bodies he downloads his consciousness into after his current body is rendered off-line. The two shrunken scientists manage to reboot the Lazarus Program and Mainframe soon rejoins the team when he reveals the whole truth about himself to them.

Pushed past her breaking point in dealing with Mainframe and all his secrets and attitude, Stinger transfers to reserve status with A-Next. She only returned to help during Galactus’ invasion and she proved to be an important in the defeat of him; shrinking down with American Dream and Spider-Girl to disable Galactus from the inside. And it was thanks to Stinger’s quick thinking that the three heroines survived the following explosion as she depleted her supply of Pym Particles to shrink all three of them down to microscopic size so that they exited the ‘macro-dimension’ of Earth and returned from the ‘microverse’ once it was safe.

Real Name: Blue Kelso
Height: 5'3"
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Dyed Blue with white streak (original color unknown)
Eye Color: Unknown (always wearing sun glasses)

Complications:
Enemy: Soldiers of the Serpent, Loki, Ulik, Dr. Doom II, and the Revengers.

Identity: She maintains a secret identity of Blue Kelso.

Relationships: She is close with the other members of A-Next and has something of a crush on J2 (not that he realizes it).

Background: Little is known about the energetic Bluestreak's past. It is known that she was a mutant gifted with incredible speed, who had left the newest incarnation of the X-Men (the X-People) because they were not flashy enough for her. She was invited to join the Dream Team of new Avengers . She quickly developed a crush on teammate J2 (a fact to which he was completely oblivious). Cocky and impulsive, Bluestreak often had problems following the orders of Mainframe. The only thing that surpassed her exuberant attitude was her skill at using her speed. When Mainframe's inert body needed to be taken across the city in less than a minute, she placed him on a gurney and covered the needed distance in virtually no time at all, even remarking that she could have stopped for a sandwich, but didn't want to show off.

Complications:
Motivation ~Chaos: Crazy Eight wants to sow chaos and confusion, flouting the laws of the land and the conventions of society. Though it is more of a desire to break the law and get away with it than anything else.

Relationships: Angel Face (mother), Funny Face (brother).

Background: When Spider-Girl interrupted a group of masked men robbing a warehouse, the notorious criminal Crazy Eight, attacked her, defending his men. Spider-Girl managed to evade his attacks, but was forced to flee as Crazy Eight watched on, mocking her. Crazy Eight next attempted a cargo heist of ships docked on Pier 87. Spider-Girl interfered again, but this time Crazy Eight was overconfident in his ability to beat her. After throwing most of his arsenal at Spider-Girl he began to celebrate a premature victory which allowed Spider-Girl to sneak up behind him and knock him out cold.

During his trial in court the criminal Mr. Nobody appeared to break Crazy Eight free only to Spider-Girl show up, a she was in the court house in her secret identity. Crazy Eight almost escapes but Peter Parker, Spider-Girl's father, blocks his way long enough to give the heroine time to catch him. Later when Crazy Eight is released from jail, he works with the Kingpin during a city-wide crime war and gains Mr. Nobody as his partner. He realizes that his brother Funny Face is on the opposite side, working with rival crime-lord Canis . This brings him to constant verbal showdowns with his brother and things come to a head when, during a conflict involving Spider-Girl, the 'new' Spider-Man, Mr Nobody, Funny Face and Crazy Eight, Mr. Nobody (aiming for Spider-Man) shoots Crazy Eight in the heat of battle.

Crazy Eight's death causes his brother Funny Face to turn on his employer, Canis, breaking his mother, Angel Face out of her asylum and waging war on both Canis and the Kingpin, causing the rival crime lord's millions in damages, leading to a temporary end to the war.

Real Name: Hope Pym
Height: 5’5”
Weight: Unknown
Hair: Auburn
Eye Color: Green

Complications:
Enemy: The members of A-Next.

Mental Issues: Red Queen suffers from mental illness that is treatable with proper medical care but if she goes off her meds she can be dangerous.

Relationships: Henry (aka Big Man, brother).

The Pym Name: Red Queen is driven to keep the memory of her parent’s heroic careers as spotless as possible. If she learns of someone, such as Stinger who clearly uses devices based on Pym technology, that is somehow tied to their legacy then the Red Queen will make their lives a living hell until they abandon the connection.

Background: Hope Pym is the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, and twin to Henry Pym, Jr. (aka Big Man). Hope became obsessed when the newest team of Avengers appeared, feeling they were disgracing the memory of her father (who died as an Avenger) and mother (who died "of a broken heart"). She used her fortune to arrange for an unknown individual to become Ion Man, attempting to assassinate Cassandra Lang. Hope felt Cassandra was a mockery of her parents and that she, herself, should have been the one to carry on the legacy started by her father when he first appeared as the original Ant-Man.

She arranged for the formation of the Revengers and she and Henry, using their parents' security codes invaded the Avengers Mansion. There, they captured Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Edwin Jarvis and Scott Lang and ambushed the Avengers. She then set about torturing Cassandra Lang, planning to kill the Avengers, convinced she could lead a better team. Her brother, Henry, turned against her and after the two teams fought it was he who stopped her from initiating the Mansion's self-destruct, which would have killed both the Revengers, the Avengers and their allies.

Sometime later, Hope recruited Magneta, the 'mistress of magnetism' to replace her brother, Henry and launched another attack on the Avengers, who were left weakened following the events of Last Hero Standing. After two unsuccessful attempts to destroy the Avengers during Last Planet Standing, both Killerwatt and Sabreclaw defected to the assembled heroes to prevent the planet's destrution. Meanwhile, Hope led the Revengers and other villains (and civilians) in looting the ravaged New York City.

With her team's ranks reduced to only herself and Ion man, Hope changed her strategy, this time deciding to target a single member of the Avengers, American Dream. Using American Dream to track down the criminal Silikong, allying with him and his army of crystal monsters created from illegal immigrants and the homeless. Red Queen offered to acquire more 'volunteers' for his army, in exchange for turning the captured American Dream into one of his crystal creatures and sending her to destroy the Avengers. When American Dream escapes and the Avengers stop Silikong's army of creatures, Red Queen and Ion Man battles American Dream only to be defeated once more.

Real Name: Henry Pym Jr.
Height: 5’11” (varies)
Weight: 154 lbs (varies)
Hair: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue

Complications:
His Sister’s Keeper: Big Man tries to keep an eye on his sister for any signs that she might have gone off her meds.

Paying His Dues: Big Man now performs missions for Agent Wheadon in an effort to earn a pardon for his previous crimes.

Relationships: Hope Pym (aka Red Queen).

Background: Henry Pym Jr. is the son of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne and the twin of Hope Pym (aka Red Queen). He used his father's technology to develop the power to grow in size and mass, then he and his sister worked to form the group, the Revengers. Using his parents' security codes, Henry and Hope led the Revengers into Avengers Mansion and took Tony Stark, Clint Barton and Edwin Jarvis prisoner.

When A-Next returned from a parallel planet Henry was shocked to find his sister's vicious streak in dealing with them, torturing them and threatening to kill them. Henry had only intended to prove to the Avengers that they "couldn't cut it." When the two teams began fighting, Henry switched sides and when Hope attempted to use the Mansion's self-destruct it was he who stopped her, having been inspired by the newest generation of Avengers.

In the aftermath of the Revengers’ attack, Henry turns himself over to the authorities only to find out that instead of going to jail he’ll be working as part of a team of other "reformed" criminals who are, like he is, working off their debt under the watchful eye of Agent Wheadon.

Complications:
Motivation ~Chaos: Ion Man enjoys using his powers to cause destruction and devastation.

Weak Point: The chest plate helps to regulate Ion Man’s personal energy field, if it were to be damaged or somehow overloaded then his body would dissipate.

Background: An low-level crook who was recruited by Hope Pym, the criminal Red Queen, to undergo a process to gain powers to help her go after A-Next. He was given a treatment similar to the used to empower Wonder Man, but a higher dose of Ionic energy and as a result he was transformed into a being of energy.

His first mission was to kill Dr. Cassandra Lang. He attacked Lang Labs only to be confronted by the visiting Mainframe. Ion Man used his powers to easily slice through Mainframe's android body only for another Mainframe to appear and attack him. At that point their fight consisted of Ion Man removing Mainframe's limbs only to have another Mainframe attack. He kept destroying Mainframes until one was able to channel his energy matrix through Ion Man's chest plate, which acted as a regulator for the energies that make up his body, and blasted him into the ozone layer. Ion Man's chest plate then fell to the ground, harmless. A few days later Ion Man somehow reformed himself and joined the other Revengers in attacking A-Next.

Loving these M2 builds of Tattooed one. They actually inspired me to break out my old issues and check them out. It's actually amazing to read them and see how much they really feel like more modern updates of classic comic books. Spider-Girl and A-Next especially really felt like classic Marvel stuff I loved, moreso than the Marvel books of the time or the present did and do. Makes me kind of sad about the current state of the comic industry, and I hope we can look forward to more of these builds.

About your Thunderstrike build, I was just reading some of the first A-Next issues, and they claimed that Kevin didn't have true superhuman strength. He could simulate it with his punches, but he wasn't really superstrong. He had a great deal of durability, tho, much like the mace he got his powers from did. Did they upgrade him to full on superstrength later?

Thanks Ares, I agree with you on the M² have that 'classic Marvel' feel to them. It's part of what I found myself enjoying the most about them.

As for Thunderstrike's strength....in the limited collection of M² books I have there isn't a lot of Thunderstrike in them, most of what I went by was from shaky memory & a couple different sites; Wikipedia says he has superhuman strength while the Marvel wiki says he has Near superhuman strength. So I decided to play it a bit safe & give him super strength since the main version of Kevin as Thunderstrike has it. After reading what you wrote I'm now considering toning down his strength and using those points to give him some of the powers that normally are based off of super strength and use his sonic power as the descriptor instead.

I figure that might better represent him, it's not like A-Next didn't have enough really super strong people on the team.

I just did a binge read of the A-Next books, and I think what you have in mind is the way to go. Kevin displayed greater strength in his Thunderstrike form than his human form, but I think it was more in the 'barely' superhuman strength range, closer to Paladin's 1 Ton strength than anything. He doesn't really have a lot of lifting feats to his name beyond throwing some debris off of him. Juggernaut and Mainframe were really the guys with genuine superstrength on the team for the most part, and the writers apparently wanted to have Thunderstrike on board while not having 3 bricks on the team. Thunderstrike DID seem to be more durable than he was strong, as he took some pretty hefty hits during the series.

I think the difference between M2 Thunderstrike and 616 Thunderstrike was that the 616 Kevin's mace gave him powers identical to his fathers, while M2 Kevin was basically transformed into a living version of the Thunderstrike mace, so their abilities wound up being a bit different.

His sonic/shockwave powers allowed him to simulate a lot of brick tricks tho, and using the points from his strength to simulate them would be the way to go. He had Shockwave Punches that let him hit hard, he had a variety of blast, burst and similar attacks, and he was able to get somewhat creative where he safely destroyed and object by placing his hands on it and basically vibrating the object until it shattered.

It's a shame that probably only the Spider-Girl books ever got collected in trade format.

Yeah, I'd snap up any kind of TPB of the M² books in a heartbeat.

So I went ahead and made those changes to Thunderstrike's build, the good news is that I had some extra pp left over and expanded his skills as well. Overall he's a couple pp cheaper than my first try but is more true to the character, so thanks for the help Ares.
