Super-Strength 4 (Heavy Load: 12 tons; 8pp)

Abilities 20 + Skills 22 (88 ranks) + Feats 22 + Powers 81 + Combat 32 + Saves 13 – Drawbacks 3 = Total 187

Complications: Enemy (extensive rogues gallery), Reputation (smeared by J. Jonah Jameson), Responsibility (comes with great power), Secret (identity)

 This build reflects an experienced Spider-Man without the powers granted by the further mutations he experienced in The Other storyline and therefore should fit his current Mephisto-retconned status.

 Spider-Man usually goes full-on Defensive Attack. Spider-Man is practically the poster boy for having a much higher defensive than offensive PL. It’s probably more accurate to think of Spider-Man’s default combat line with Attack +8 and Defense +18 and the listed combat line for when he goes “All-Out Attack,” which for him is really just not using Defensive Attack.

 Peter’s a pretty bright kid and makes frequent use of Inventor, or as frequent as his limited Wealth resources allow. His web-shooters are standard and are usually used to Snare his foes or for Swinging. Other effects should be considered power stunts.

 Though he’s pretty powerful, Spider-Man usually has to use his ingenuity to beat most of his rogues gallery, since each member usually out-classes him in some aspect. Of the mainstream heroes with such a large gallery of villains, only Batman is more versatile, and not by much.

:!: Update 3/16/09 :!: I decided to once again make this default build represent the current Spider-Man. This will probably require a little tinkering with the Post-Other build and a new PL10 classic build.

Complications: Reputation (Hulk smashed too many things), Temper (Hulk Smash!)

 There have obviously been many incarnations of the Hulk over the years, but this build describes the archetypal Classic Green Hulk most people seem to associate with the character. The various incarnations have had the Hulk form retain some or all of Banner’s intellect and, more rarely, the Banner form retain some of Hulk’s strength.

 Though one might argue that the Hulk is always angry and already the strongest there is, he can become even angrier and even stronger as his adrenaline surges, usually in battle. Hulking Out is a Boost effect, with the Emotional Flaw. Rather than mandating an incremental improvement by combat round, I think the Flaw can be applied in a flexible enough fashion that it is not an all-or-nothing effect. The Hulk’s degree of anger is thus not dependent on the time he spends in combat and is ultimately under the control of the GM.

 An alternate way to construct Hulking Out would be to use the Chained Flaw from Mecha & Manga, with each successive Boost requiring the previous to first be activated. This produces the effect that is commonly used to portray Hulking Out and is a bit cheaper at the cost of having to successively Boost:

Boost 10 (Strength, Constitution, Regeneration, Super-Strength; Extras: Free [+2], Total Fade [+1]; Flaws: Chained 8 [to initial ranks of Boost; -1], Emotional [anger; -1], Personal [-1]; 32pp)

 Fully Boosted, the Hulk’s Strength increases to 50, his Constitution to 46, his Super-Strength to 15, and he adds 10 ranks to Regeneration, enough to increase his Recovery Rate to the point where he can make damage recovery checks every round without taking actions. For even more lifting capacity, Hulk can stunt additional Super-Strength off of his Enhanced Strength. If that’s not enough, he has Ultimate Effort for “niche protection,” ensuring that no one will outdo him in Strength. He’s the strongest there is, period.

 Without his Boost, the Hulk is still a very formidable PL12 but is actually beatable by someone like Wolverine or Captain America, albeit barely. His feat selection makes him a veritable grappling god. The Hulk only has Impervious ranks on his base Toughness, but that’s more than enough, especially when coupled with his impressive Regeneration rate. Unlike, say, Superman, bullets don’t really bounce off him so much as simply not bother him.

 Finally, the Hulk has some weird ability to see ghosts and astral forms, as well as sense the direction and location of the desert base where he was born. Oh, and no matter how much Banner grows when he becomes the Hulk, his jeans still fit, though they must be awfully tight. Still, they’re not made of unstable molecules or anything; they’re just really…stretchy.

 The other versions of Hulk will and have been dealt with in separate builds, but they generally have different starting Strength and Constitution scores pre-Boost: briefly, each score 4 points lower for Grey Hulk, each 4 points higher for a modern Savage Green Hulk, and each 8 points higher for World War Hulk. The Boost then brings these scores 10 points higher than the base value.

 The Dr. Jekyll to the Hulk’s Mr. Hyde. Not entirely useless. Banner can actually create an invention that Hulk then uses, such as during his second encounter with the Abomination. And Banner can beat up an unpowered Robert Reynolds.

Dr. Robert Bruce Banner (Normal Identity)

Abilities: STR: 12 (+1), DEX: 10 (+0), CON: 12 (+1), INT: 18 (+4), WIS: 14 (+2), CHA: 12 (+1)

Skills: Computers 8 (+12), Craft [Electronic] 12 (+16). Knowledge [Life Sciences] 12 (+16), Knowledge [Physical Sciences] 16 (+20), Knowledge [Technology] 8 (+12), Medicine 8 (+10)

Feats: Inventor

Combat: Attack +0; Damage +1 (Unarmed); Defense +0 (+0 flat-footed); Initiative +0

Saves: Toughness +1, Fortitude +2, Reflex +1, Will +4

Drawbacks: Involuntary Transformation (into Hulk, when angry; Very Common, Major; -5pp)

Abilities 18 + Skills 16 (64 ranks) + Feats 1 + Powers 0 + Combat 0 + Saves 4 – Drawbacks 5 = Total 34

:!: Update 2/8/10 :!: I went away from the sequentially more powerful Boost commonly used by most other game incarnations of Hulk.

Great write-ups and conversions, Taliesin. Love the way you give all of the iconic characters all of their abilities while keeping them balanced.

Just a few things since I'm catching up on weeks of write-ups, migraines are not a friend of those who like to read a lot.

The Fool: The total bonus for his Ride and Sense Motive skills are each 1 higher than their ability bonus and ranks would give.

Zidane: Just something minor, you didn't put a [/b] after the Device rank for his Ninja suit. Just looks a little weird that way.

Garnet: Her summons have Selective listed as a Power Feat. Any power which allows a save has Selective as an Extra instead of a Power Feat.

New Mario Mario: The Immovable part of his Mega Mushrooms has the Flaws listed as +1 which would make them Extras.

Damn that is about the best HULK built I ever seen! Intensify extra, do you mind if I start using it? So how would it work if you added a +1 modifer to it. Will you by any chance do Thor?

Oy, my bane, the typo/miscalculation. :x

Thanks for pointing those out; some look easy enough to correct; others, not so, but good to know.

And man, I hate migraines, too. I'm terribly photosensitive and get migraines in bright lights unless I have shades on, so people see me wearing shades indoors, like I'm some poker player. :P It really sucks, since there's no good drugs out there for it, not without some contraindications anyway, and the rest are homeopathic remedies. Hope you find some solace from your migraines.

Oh, go right ahead and use Intensify. It's actually really a -1 Flaw in most cases, and doesn't have steps, just like Fades doesn't, so you can't put a +1 modifier to it, since it weakens a power. Boost is already Flawed with Fades, so I just replaced Fades with Intensify, and since they're both Flaws, there is no change in cost.

You can modify it with Slow Intensify (like Slow Fade). This actually is somewhat the kludgy part of it, since Slow Fade makes the power fade slower, but it's almost a penalty for a power to Intensify more slowly, even if it lasts longer that way. I suppose a "Fast Intensify" would work too, making the power gain progressively more pp per round, like 2pp per round, but that would make overall duration shorter. I'm afraid of having to perform integrations to balance it, and I know I'm going too far if I have to start using calculus in an RPG!

I'm planning on doing all the Marvel iconics: Wolverine next, and Thor doesn't sound bad, either! I know you like super-powerful characters! :D

Wow, that's a great compliment, if you didn't even like the Hulk!

Truth be told, I'm a much bigger DC fan than Marvel fan, and I didn't want to end up shafting one or the other. And it's sometimes harder to write a build when you're a fanboy...and I've got to tread carefully when those characters come up!
