Johnny warlock draws inspiration from dc's Klarion the with boy (especially the 7 soldiers incarnation), in that he's a heroic character of malicious origins.
in fact, his origin is that he grew tired of hell (or didn't really have the knack/inclination/drive to torture for eternity), and eventually escaped (to whit, some satanist traded jobs with johnny. johnny went to earth, the satanist went to hell to become a torturer's apprentice)
johnny's metamorph lets him become a more combat oriented demon if the situation arises, but, as johnny's made no secret, he'd rather avoid violence if he can, and instead try to have fun

as a complication, being a demon, Johnny is a habitual liar
