Epilogue

After getting a detailed description of the man who hired Engel for the hit, Electron and Wraith bring the assassin to the authorities waiting at Rouses Point. Before handing him over Wraith helpfully suggests that he confess to this and everything else he's been contracted for and to provide evidence to the police.

"I'll be keeping tabs. If you ever get out, legally or not, I'll find you again. And if we meet again, you won't be going to prison. I don't forgive and I don't forget," warns Wraith.

A quick search of the passenger car turns up the laptop, which Wraith retains for further analysis. Finally, after determining they have done as much as possible, the two heroes return home. Wraith quickly releases a public statement announcing the capture of Electron's shooter and that they are still searching for the mastermind behind this act. He also mentions that they have definitely ruled out The Gamemaster due to his bumbling incompetence.

Life begins to return to normal in the big city. Well, as normal as it can be considering the massive jump in the number of super-powered beings over the past few days. Construction contracts are granted to begin the rebuilding of downtown Baltimore. Business booms as new people rush to the city to cash in on the growing supers community. And soon the skies are filled with those who look to take their places beside Baltimore's original three defenders.

But that's an entirely different tale altogether.

 Huzzah! I got my epilogue! The players didn't decide to do anything really off the wall, so this is the perfect spot to wrap up the issue. It's a short update, I know, but at least you didn't have to wait another week for it :)

 The players suspect Infinity Inc is behind the shooting and that the Gamemaster is working with them. That's a logical assumption and we'll see more of the investigation into that next issue.

Thanks for the update!

Heh, when he got stun-locked the second time I just decided to go with it. One thing I want to start doing is if I use Fiat to do a specific thing (such as shaking off the stunned condition) I won't use it to do that thing a second time.

Really though, I have a feeling that Engel might have wiped the floor with them had he not been set on sabotaging the locomotive. Although with a fully juiced up Electron the outcome might still be in question.

"So, safety in numbers, Sentinel?"

"Absolutely. The Incident gave a lot of us powers. But far too many are using those powers to benefit themselves and not society. When you're facing threats like Havoc Unlimited or the Elementals, well, that's why we need organized groups like the Guardians."

Charles Smythe sits in front of the television, slackjawed. As the interview continues one thought surfaces again and again. Finally he shouts.

"That jerk stole my idea!"

"Indeed" Wraith intones behind him. "It would appear Superman is a self-righeous fool. I'll be damned if I'm going to join some newbie's superteam. You have any beer?"

"Yeah there's one in the fridge." Charles rises from his chair.

"I TOLD you it was a good idea," he continues. "Only a matter of time before it caught on. Still, I wouldn't join Sentinel's Supernoobs either. You catch the bit about bodies drained of blood? Think we have a vampire killer on the loose?"

"Nope, I didn't catch that." Wraith pops open a beer. "Vampires, eh? Sounds spicy. We'd better investigate before the super-noobs become super-vampire-noobs. And I think I know just the person to see about that."

Interstate 83

"I wasn't sure when I'd hear from you again," Steven Graves mutters around a cigarette. He switches lanes, swerving around a tanker truck with a large flammable hazard sticker displayed on the back.

"We've been trying to keep a lid on the investigation since I called you in on the first body, but now that the press has got wind of it everything's hit the fan. And until a couple hours ago we haven't turned up anything we can use."

Graves passes a thick file back to Wraith and Electron in the back seat.

"That's not to say we haven't found anything. But it's all been weird. All six victims showed individual lacerations numbering no less than ten thousand each. They're insect bites, but they're from more than one species. The majority of them are from cockroaches, but there's deerflies, ants, bedbugs and others mixed in.

"There's also insect remains found at each of the sites, but nowhere near the number needed to cause the kind of damage these people suffered. And it wasn't until the third victim that we discovered another unusual feature. That one had a huge cloud of flies around the body, but they wouldn't go nearer than three feet. Wouldn't touch the corpse at all. We observed the same behavior at all the subsequent scenes. Something's even got the corpse flies spooked.

"Anyway, we may have finally got something linking a few of the victims. Victims Two and Six each had a bill of sale from the same guy on the day they died. An electrician named Charles Smythe.

"I've got some guys combing over the older sites right now looking for anything else that could be tied to this Smythe guy. However we are a bit short on manpower so if you want to take a look, number five doesn't have anyone there yet. The address is in the folder."

Wraith flips through the pages until he locates the address. A soft beeping at his belt draws his attention for a moment. It's his cousin's Crimewatchers handset. It's something he's been meaning to return, but it's been so darn useful lately.

'Break-in reported at Bioanalytical Systems, Inc. Havoc Unlimited members present.' flashes across the face. An instant later the same report is relayed over Lieutenant Graves' police radio. Wraith closes the folder and tucks it away into the folds of his cloak.

"I'll look into it. If you've got anything else you know how to contact me."

Graves glances in the rearview mirror but Wraith and Electron are already gone.

Bioanalytical Systems, Inc.

The low, squat building crouches south of downtown, tucked away behind an abandoned lot. The streetlights here are dimmer than their more northerly counterparts. Perfect for shady dealings or, in this case, breaking and entering.

No alarm or siren can be heard from the street. No flashing lights can be seen. But the inch-thick steel door torn nearly in half and discarded on the ground is a clear indicator someone is inside who shouldn't be there.

While Electron begins to juice up from a nearby power line Wraith teleports inside to get a look around. He stays close to the shadows, taking care not to be seen. The interior of the building consists of a small reception area with hallway leading into the recesses of the structure. The sound of screeching metal followed by swearing draws his attention to a large well-lit doorway at the end of the hall.

"Watch it when you disable the interlocks!" shouts Detonator as Wraith peers around the door. "This thing is useless to us if you break it,"

"Yeah, yeah" Impact grumbles as he begins to pull another section off a massive piece of equipment dominating the center of the room. Foot-thick cables snake across the floor into the base of the apparatus. Power conduits more likely than not. A small surgical-quality table is attached to one of the thing's sides. Above it a long cylinder is suspended inches from a head-sized indentation in the table.

A handful of scientists and technicians are tied up in the far corner of the room. Mouths, ankles and wrists are bound by duct tape and all wear sullen, resigned looks on their faces. Standing guard nearby is the kid Wraith christened 'Top' during last month's prison break. His hands are full of small metal objects.

Up near the ceiling 'Zipper' hovers on lookout duty. The zig-zag bands of energy flow over his body as he watches Impact wrestle with the machinery below. He glances over to the doorway and his eyes lock with Wraith's.

Wraith gets a result of 19 on his Stealth check. He is opposed by Salvo's Notice check result of 26 and is spotted.

Surprise Round

Wraith's initiative result is 4, Salvo gets a 3

Wraith teleports back outside and quickly informs Electron on what he saw. Together they plan an ambush for Havoc Unlimited as they exit the building. The sound of police sirens can be heard faintly in the distance as the two heroes hide atop the roof of an adjacent building.

A minute passes before a low rumbling is heard. It continues for a few seconds and then stops. Then a second rumble is heard. Again the night grows quiet except for the wail of police sirens. A few more minutes pass. The sirens grow louder. Finally the first squad car pulls up outside the building.

"Okay, they're not coming out," says Wraith.

"Let's port in right on top of Top and take him down fast and hard," Electron replies.

Quickly the duo reappears inside the building, but by then it is too late. A large rubble-filled crater has appeared in the center of the room. Parts of the gigantic machine lie amid the shattered concrete while other pieces are scattered throughout the room. The lights above flicker unsteadily. One of the fluorescent housings sways back and forth, a broken chain dangling from one end.

Over in the corner come muffled cries for help as the captive scientists struggle against their bonds. Wraith peels the duct tape from the nearest hostage.

"Thanks for the rescue Wraith," he says. He works his jaw for a moment and stares at the ruined equipment. "Well, crap. There goes our funding."

Wraith asks if anything was taken and the scientist nods in affirmation.

"Most of the scanning equipment has been destroyed, but Impact did remove the neural disruption module just before the floor exploded. That was what they were after in the first place. Their leader, Detonator, wants to use it as a weapon."

"Er...what does this neural disruptor do exactly?" Electron inquires.

"It sedates anything caught in its beam by interfering with a subject's thoughtwaves. We developed it as part of a non-invasive method for scanning the anatomies of...well...I'm afraid I can't go into any more detail than that without breaking a few federal laws.

"But there's a danger with using the disruptor as a weapon. If the beam is held in place for more than a few seconds then the subject starts to suffer permanent brain damage. The apparatus it was originally a part of was designed to cycle on and off before any damage could result. But without that limitation, and in the wrong hands, I don't want to think about what could happen."

As the scientist continues to speak, Wraith begins to search the scene. Much of the equipment has been smashed and damaged beyond repair and the amount of wreckage from Tremor's getaway means hours if not days of sifting for even the smallest of clues.

Wraith rolls a 3 on his Search check for a result of 17. He doesn't find anything.

As the Baltimore police begin their debriefing of the scientists the heroes decide to return to their investigation of the mysterious vampire bugs. Should any leads turn up for finding Havoc Unlimited, the police report will more likely than not cross Wraith's path.

Dundalk

Before they even set foot in the door Electron recognizes the house, a sinking feeling growing in the pit of his stomach. It's a dilapidated shack in one of the more backwater sections of the suburb. And he was here just last week to replace the fuses for the homebound homeowner.

Wraith phases both of them through the sealed door and goes to work. It's a difficult job considering the owner was the worst sort of packrat, collecting anything and everything. Still, in record time Wraith holds up a slip of paper with a pair of tweezers. Bill of sale. Complete with Charles Smythe's signature.

Wraith rolls a 17 on his Search check for a result of 31. He finds the incriminating evidence.

Electron's cell phone rings, startling him.

"Honey?" whispers his wife on the other end. She sounds worried. "The police are here with a search warrant. They're looking for you."

 I was all set for a battle with Havoc Unlimited, but the heroes wanted to ambush them. Had Salvo not spotted Wraith, they would have walked out the front door and the ambush would have gone off.

However, these villains aren't dummies. First sign of a cape, they go to Plan B. Which as you may remember from last issue, involves Tremor making an underground getaway.

Not to worry though. There will be a fight with these guys. They've gotten away twice now. No need for a third time.

After hearing about his phone call Wraith assumes a dramatic pose.

"Electron, I say to you 'Stop your evil ways!'" He drops his arm and continues.

"Don't worry too much about it. This bill of sale just proves that you were here, which you were. Doesn't show method or motive.

"I'll continue looking for real evidence. You'd better head out and give your story to the police."

Electron shrugs. "Well, on the bright side the police won't find my costume."

Charles Smythe's house

Electron drops down into the copse of trees on the edge of his property and enters the secret passageway that runs underneath his backyard. He makes his way through the tunnel, peels off his mask and presses his ear against the hidden door in his basement, just in case the police are on the other side. Halfway expecting to hear either silence or the sound of people searching, Electron is at first puzzled and then horrified to hear an incessant droning sound punctuated by gunshots and screams.

Electron grabs his civilian clothes from his storage locker quickly heads back up the tunnel. He takes to the air, his aura blazing brightly in the night sky. Circling around, he takes up a hovering position above the house and in a few seconds he has his assessment of the situation.

Down below his wife stands in the street, her arms clutched protectively around their two children. Next to her, shouting into his radio, is Lieutenant Graves. Ringing the perimeter of the house are a handful of police officers, their weapons drawn and trained on the open front doorway.

From inside the house come more screams and gunshots. They end abruptly and the body of another officer falls into view briefly before something pulls it back inside the house.

"Electron, thank God you're here!" Graves shouts. "We've got two men down in there, but whatever that thing is, we're no match for it!"

"Get those civilians to safety!" Electron points to his family. Not wanting to stay, for fear of being recognized by his children, he streaks into the house.

Just inside the front entryway is a nightmarish scene. The lifeless arm of one officer rests at the top of the basement steps. Presumably the rest of him is further down the steps. Bullet holes pepper the drywall. Even the kitchen window above the sink sports a hole or two.

But Electron's attention is drawn to the left, in the living room. A larger-than-human mass of swarming insects pulses on the floor next to the sofa. Thousands upon thousands of roaches, flies, centipedes and other arthropods crawl over each other. Every now and then the mass peels back to reveal the second police officer beneath, unmoving and quite dead.

As if sensing Electron's presence, the swarm lifts off the body and assumes a vaguely human shape. The head turns to look at the hero and a reedy voice, like an army of cicadas, speaks.

"Hello, father,"

Crime Scene No. 5

Wraith answers his cell phone on the second ring. It's Graves. Within seconds he has the story: the search warrant for Smythe's house, the attack on the officers, Electron's fortuitous arrival.

"Our bullets went right through it. Electron's in there right now and hopefully he can take care of that creature, but it's a sure bet we found our killer!"

Charles Smythe's house, Round One

Wraith materializes next to Electron. "I presume since you didn't call you don't need any assistance with that. I'll just see whats in the refrigerator."

"He says he's my kid." Electron shouts to Wraith as he aims a blast of lightning at the swarm. The electricity plays over its surface, popping and sparking. "Must have been that stripper from Detroit. Man she was nasty."

"I see he got your looks anyway. You got a name, kid?"

The last of the sparks from Electron's bolt fade away, but amazingly the mass of insects looks even bigger. "Yesss..." the thing whispers. "The Collective requires more energy..."

The swarm raises its arms and a cloud of biting, stinging flies rush toward Electron. "We once required the blood of others to survive, but now you have shown us a faster way to grow. This will be your final gift to us, father."

Electron dodges out of the way of the pseudopods, and in seconds they are reabsorbed into the Collective's body.

"Your name is the Collective?? Man, whatever happened to names like Bob or Frank?" Wraith asks as he munches on an apple. "You sure you don't need any help? Its no bother. I mean I'm already here and all."

"You have any bug spray in that utility belt?" replies Electron.

Wraith pulls a cannister with a stylized bug with an 'X' drawn over it from his belt, thumbs the activator and tosses it straight at the Collective. There is a soft whump followed by a hiss and an acrid green fog begins to spread throughout the living room.

The effects are immediate. Many of the insects begin to curl up and fall away, littering the carpet with tiny corpses. However not nearly enough die to reduce the size of the Collective's body.

"Wraith," the thing buzzes loudly as it drifts through the smoke towards him. "You should know we are a natural survivor. Your chemicals cannot hope to overcome us. And what fails to kill us only makes us stronger."

Initiative is rolled. Wraith rolls an 8, Electron rolls a 2, the Collective rolls a 1.

Wraith delays his action.

Electron attacks Collective, rolls an 18 and hits, but no damage is dealt.

The attack triggers the Collective's Growth power and it gains 1 rank as a free action. It then attacks Electron, rolls a 6 and misses.

Wraith spends a hero point to add a bug bomb to his utility belt array. As an area effect attack, no attack roll is needed. However the Collective is immune to chemical attacks so no damage save is required.

The Collective is a very nasty opponent. I used a variation in my 1950s game I called the DDTerror and it needed a major piece of magic to stop. Good luck to your players. I like the idea of it considering Electron its father...

"Yeah, yeah, Oogie," says Wraith. "If I had a nickel for every villain that declared themselves invincible I'd be a rich man. By the way, I saw the movie where you got schooled by Santa Claus, so I can't say I'm not too worried."

Round Two

Electron angles his hands upward and blasts away a huge portion of the living room's ceiling. The air fills with dust as wood and plaster pour down on top of the Collective, crushing it to the floor. Electron grits his teeth as a king-sized bed tumbles down and shatters its frame against his entertainment center. A spray of sparks shoots out of the front of the television.

The room grows quiet, and then a skittering sound can be heard as thousands of roaches stream from beneath the chunks of ceiling. The carpet of insects flow up the walls and bulges outward toward Electron. A face forms in the center of the bulge and opens its mouth.

"Too slow, father. Even if you were to keep attacking us our growth is still too slow. We must go to the source and consume it entirely. We must become stronger, smarter and faster than we are now!"

The Collective ceases its movement on the walls of Electron's living room for a split second and then lifts into the air, streaming past the heroes and out the front door.

Electron spends a hero point to power stunt an indirect physical attack. The Collective is unharmed by the attack.

The Collective leaves the house.

After a quick discussion of their options, Electron suggests trying to contain the Collective inside a force field. Wraith will teleport to the Genesis field laboratory from Issue Two to borrow the force field generator while Electron follows the relatively slow-flying insect cloud.

Because the Collective is not getting away, neither hero gets a hero point for an escaping villain. Electron is awarded a hero point for his suggestion of the force field, as that was one option I had not forseen.

Genesis Labs

Wraith materializes silently in the middle of a well-lit but empty room. For a second he's unsure if he's in the correct spot. There's no melted computer banks, no robotic arms, and no force field generator to be seen.

"Whoah, dude! It's Wraith!" says a voice behind him. Two men stand near the far wall, clad in overalls and standing on a plastic sheet spattered with fresh paint. The one who spoke puts down his paint roller and wipes his hands on a dirty rag. He steps forward, his hand outstretched.

"Hey man, I'm a big fan of yours!"

"Gentlemen! I have come because I have need of a force field generator to contain a horrid villain composed of insects who, by the way, is Electron's child. Although you did not hear that from me," replies Wraith. "Where might I find a force field generator capable of such a task?"

The painter lets his hand drop and shrugs his shoulders.

"Beats me, man. The company that used to be here got shut down and everything got mothballed after last month's accident. The entire floor got cleared out and redone good as new. Me and Lyle are the last crew going through before they reopen this place back up for some new tenants."

Lyle clears his throat and takes a step forward.

"Actually, I heard Advanced Energy Concepts bought all the equipment that was in this room. They're always grabbing up smaller companies."

"Many thanks, my good man. You have done your city a great service," Wraith says. He pulls out some autographed glamor shots of himself from his belt and gives them each one before teleporting away.

At a nearby phone booth

Advanced Energy Concepts is easy enough to find. The address in the yellow pages points to a location a few miles outside the Baltimore area. At least this company's experiments won't be going awry in the middle of a densely populated metropolis, Wraith notes. He lets the phone book fall back into its cradle and vanishes.

Electron

The dark cloud of the Collective undulates through the air, moonlight glinting off thousands of carapaces. Electron easily keeps pace from a safe distance. As long as the night remains cloudless he can easily see the cloud ahead of him.

Slowly the insects veer off toward the northeast, leaving the twinkling lights of the city for the relative darkness of the channel below. Electron frowns, trying to discover the reason for the change in course. Suddenly it clicks. The 'source' the Collective mentioned could only be the Monks Island nuclear power plant!

Electron rolls a 20 on a DC 15 Profession (Electrician) check and knows where the villain is headed. It's about 16 miles from his house. They should reach it in about thirty minutes.

Advanced Energy Concepts

Tucked into the wooded hills AEC is a squat, angular structure with a single road leading from the highway to its gated exterior. A row of darkened glass windows rings the top of the building, while the rest is flat concrete. To the casual observer it appears as though it was designed by someone with a bunker-like mentality. Whatever this company does it keeps it under tight wraps.

Wraith teleports directly in front of the checkpoint guard. After the few seconds it takes for the guard to calm down, Wraith is able to ask for someone in charge. The guard scans down his list of personnel, but no one above the appropriate clearance level is available.

"Sorry Wraith, it looks like everyone's already left for the day," he says. The guard looks down at his list again.

"Wait a sec, I think Dr. Watts might still be here. She hasn't checked out yet. Technically she's not an administrator but she's in charge of the labs. She might be able to help you out."

The guard hands the clipboard over to Wraith and indicates the sign-in section for visitors.

"You'll need to wear this at all times inside the facility," he says, handing Wraith a visitor's pass. "Just head straight down the road toward the parking garage. It's the only entrance at ground level, so you can't miss it. Once you're inside you'll see a row of elevators to your right. Take either of the two right elevators to sublevel six.

"That's where Dr. Watts has her offices. I'll phone ahead to let her know you're coming. If she's not there she'll be in one of the labs. Those are stricty off limits to non-personnel, but since you're the Wraith you could pretty much go wherever you want. I doubt we could stop you anyway."

Wraith thanks the guard and vanishes in a heartbeat.

Sublevel Six

The door to Dr. Jane Watts' office opens before Wraith can even knock. Blond hair, blue eyes and an air of cold disdain greet him. Ah yes, Wraith thinks. She's the one who helped cause the accident last month.

"So Wraith," she sniffs, "Ben said you needed to speak with me."

"I need your force field generator to contain a supervillain."

She shakes her head. "No. Out of the question. That's a forty-five million dollar piece of equipment and I won't allow it to be released to anyone, not even you."

Before Wraith can respond she raises a hand.

"That's not to say I don't have anything you can use. Follow me," she says, brushing past him.

Quickly they walk through the winding corridors until they come to an unmarked door. Watts places her hand on the security pad next to it and waits as her palm is scanned. A second scanner passes across her eyes and once her retinal pattern is confirmed the door slides open.

As Watts strides into the room beyond, the lights flicker on. On the wall opposite the door hang several backpack contraptions. She pulls one off its hooks and shrugs it on.

"This is derived from the technology we used to create our first force field generator," she says, pulling a short wand from its holster on the pack's side with an overhand motion. A cord connects the wand to the underside of the backpack. In all the whole thing looks like something out of Ghostbusters.

Watts thumbs the activation switch on the wand and the pack begins to hum.

"Aim the projector at your target. The laser on the front will help guide you. It just has to touch the subject, don't worry about hitting the exact center. When you're ready, pull and hold the trigger."

Suddenly Wraith is surrounded by a glowing force field. Watts' continues to speak, her words sounding hollow as they reach his ears.

"This dial adjusts the size of the field. Don't decrease it too far or you'll crush whatever's inside. Increase it too much and you could damage things outside the field. Let up on the trigger to release the field.

"Any questions?" she asks as the field vanishes.

"Yeah, is there a trigger lock on this thing so that I don't have to hold it the whole time once I've got the subject?"

"Nope," Dr. Watts answers. "These are just prototypes, so they don't have a lot of bells and whistles."

"What will happen if I teleport with the field on?"

"You'd most likely lose your target. The projector places the field around the target being painted by the laser. Once the laser moves off the target, the field vanishes."

"Thirdly, since I'll be walking around with an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on my back, what happens if I cross the streams?"

Watts raises an eyebrow. "Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light."

Monks Island Nuclear Power Plant

Wraith appears atop the containment building, the giant cooling tower rising behind him. A steady cloud of water vapor rises into the night, obscuring the stars above. Catwalks criss cross the complex and in the distance guards patrol with automatic weapons. Somewhere below his feet, nearly twelve hundred megawatts of electricity is being generated. If the Collective somehow gets in there...

Wraith leaves the thought unfinished as he catches sight of Electron's glowing aura. His night goggles pick up the twisting, writhing cloud of insects just ahead of him. Slowly the Collective pulls itself into a sphere, pausing its flight as it finally reaches its goal. Then the cloud flattens out and begins to plummet toward the vapor rising from the cooling tower.

Initiative and Round One

The order of initiative is Collective 21, Electron 19, and Wraith 13

The Collective banks sharply before it reaches the lip of the cooling tower, skittering across the outside of the concrete structure and spiraling downward to the ground. An instant later a flash of lightning streaks across the sky. Concrete explodes out from the side of the cooling tower where the bolt struck. The debris rains down, pelting the collective with pebble-sized chunks of concrete but the larger pieces miss the creature completely.

Wraith unslings the wand from his backpack and hits the activation switch. The Collective completes another circuit around the outside of the tower and as it comes into view once again, Wraith aims the laser at the center of the writhing mass and pulls the trigger. Translucent blue energy spreads out across the surface of the murderous thing, illuminating each insect that makes up the Collective.

The Collective takes a double move and begins to move down the cooling tower. Electron attempts to slow it down by blasting the tower and rolls a 1 to hit. The tower rolls an 8 on its DC 25 Toughness save, failing by 12. Not enough to blast a hole in the foot thick concrete but enough to cause enough some debris to rain down.

Wraith draws his weapon as a move action and attacks. The Collective rolls an 11 on a DC 20 Reflex saving throw and fails. An airtight barrier is formed and the Collective can no longer move.

Round Two, but not really...

"Release us!" the Collective shrieks as it tries to tear out of force field surrounding it.

The Collective attacks the barrier as a full round action. The barrier rolls a 20 on its DC 20 Toughness save and is unaffected.

"You're not going anywhere until you answer some questions," says Electron as he descends toward the Collective. "For starters, who are you?"

"You already know who we are. We are the Collective," rasps the Collective.

"How did you come to exist?"

"We did not exist, then we did. Release us, father!"

"What do you want?"

"We want to cover the earth and devour every living thing. We want to tear Wraith to pieces and consume his flesh. We want to grow and survive. We want you to set us free."

"Why did you call me father?"

"Have you forgotten already? Without you we might have perished. You were the one who found us in the darkness below the city streets. We were lost, blind and alone. And then we sensed you with us.

"We traveled back with you to your home, your hive. While you slept, we absorbed your memories and thoughts and made them our own. And we grew.

"But it was not enough. We needed to hunt to continue to survive. So we took your memories of those you have spoken with, who were not of your hive, and we fed on them. And we continued to grow.

"But it is still not enough. Blood may sustain us, but we need energy to evolve further. We will become larger, we will become smarter, we will divide and begin the cycle again and again. But you and your family we will save for last, out of respect for the start you have given us. Now release us so we may feed!"

Epilogue

After some lengthy discussion, Wraith manages to get ahold of a self-sealing airtight container for storing the Collective while Electron takes over on force field generator duty. Maneuvering the thing into the container is easy and Wraith shuts the lid quick enough to prevent the Collective from exiting. The LED lights on the side of the container flicker from red to green, indicating a successful seal.

From there the Collective is entered into the criminal justice system, and currently is awaiting trial. Charles Smythe is cleared of suspicion as the real 'Baltimore Vampire Killer' has been revealed. After a brief period of media interest and semi-celebrity status in his neighborhood, things return to normal.

Which in Baltimore, is anything but...

 Well, they captured the bad guy. And it was in a way I hadn't even anticipated. I had planned on them to recover the equipment that Havoc Unlimited had stolen from the lab at the beginning of the issue and using that against the Collective. Essentially its intelligence could be drained away by the device and the mass of roaches would be reduced into harmless (but still gross) insects. But you know how players are :)

 At least some of my villains came out on top. Havoc Unlimited now has another weapon in their arsenal

Mwahahahaha, Havoc Unlimited sounds like they'll have some fun.
Also seemed like a cool story arc, good job. Can't wait for Issue 5.
3 minutes of your DM rolling a d6 spells character death for you.
