Background:
Doctor Cameron Hartforge was born, Charles Silverburg, in Freedom City in the year 1897. He was the son of Russian born Jewish Immigrants and his father earned his living fixing clocks. As a boy young Cameron displayed an unusual fondness for the natural world. When he wasn’t examining animals that he found in the woods he was pouring over any book he could find on the subject.
He was especially fond of the work of Charles Darwin. The idea of species changing to better suit their environment intrigued the young man. In his mind he took the theory a step further. The process of evolution would make a race stronger, better. As far as Cameron could figure this process of evolution needed to be leading somewhere, towards a perfect creature that could survive anything and excel in any environment.
His parents worked hard and were eventually able to send him to medical school. He was unhappy at school however, he felt that his theories were being ignored and that there was far too much emphasis on simple technique.
When he was about to give up on school and quit in disgust something amazing happened. While walking past a construction site a steel girder fell and was about to crush him. Then in a blur he was plucked from the ground and moved to safety. When Charles looked up he saw his savior, a young man.
The boy ran away with the same outstanding speed. As Charles thought about this it event it occurred to him that this youth may represent his theory in action. By the time the youth reappeared in 1938 calling himself the Centurion Charles had already left the city to seek his fortune.
After his salvation at Centurion’s hands Charles began to look for others who were conducting experimenting in theories similar to his own. At the time the only place such experiments were being done was Nazi Germany. Charles wasn’t a fool, he knew about the perception of Jewish people in Germany at the time, therefore he created a false identity for himself, Doctor Cameron Hartforge, and began bleaching his hair. By the time he arrived in Germany no one was none the wiser.
Doctor Hartforge’s natural brilliance was quickly apparent to the Nazis. He was eventually placed in a Thule society expedition to the Arctic as a science advisor. It was there that Hartforge met the Ultimen immortals of unrivaled power. They seemed to fit his theory. He wanted to stay badly, but the Nazis were expelled. The Ultimen wiped their memories of the expedition and sent them back home. For some reason he did not know at the time Hartforge’s mind wipe did not take, he remembered Ultima Thule, the Ultimen hidden society he would always remember it, but would never be able to remember the way there.
Hartforge knew he needed to keep quiet, the Nazis would never believe his story of what really happened in the arctic. Even when Kal-Zed, the Rogue Ultiman called Superior, joined the Third Reich Cameron knew that he could not trust the Nazis with the knowledge of Ultima Thule.
Superior proved an unwilling subject, his own desire for power made it so that he’d never willing work with Hartforge. Hartforge threw himself into his work, trying desperately to find out more about the Ultimen. He began studying every obscure text he could find, and slowly what remained of his sanity began to crack. He was never able find a way back to Ultima Thule, but by the time the war ended his shattered mind had crafted a new theory.
Hartforge’s theory was born of the horrors he witnessed, and committed, while working for the Nazis. Now he believed that his perfect being had a destiny. He was destined to end this world of meager men and women, and usher in a new age where this perfect being and his progeny would move on to rule the universe. After his experience with the Ultimen he now believed that the race was the closest to reaching that point. However, their peaceful culture had effectively castrated their potential to breed what Hartforge now called The Omega Man. Superior was the most suited for the role, but his defeat and disappearance at the hands of Centurion proved that he was not yet ready.
Hartforge spent the next several decades laying the groundwork to eventually breed his ideal Omega Man. It was a slow process and Hartforge knew he’d never see it through to completion. Therefore he expanded his research trying to find ways to strengthen existing human beings. It was during this research that he discovered that his brain operated differently from those of normal people. His brain cells seemed incapable of dying, and he simply grew more and more intelligent with time. This also manifested in a resistance to mental powers. His experimentation resulted in him effectively becoming immortal, and with a body that was unusually resistant to injury. He even learned to refocus his mental energy to create localized telekinetic explosions. These, and other scientific advancements were marketable discoveries. Hartforge began to fund himself by bestowing super human abilities upon normal people. He created a multitude of alternate identities to keep him hidden while he did this.
While Hartforge didn’t know it at the time his research took a fortuitous turn in 1974 when a shadowy organization calling itself Life’s Blood asked Hartforge to breed a stronger type of vampire. (Details on that time in his life can be found
here.) By the end of it Hartforge had created an irresistible female with enhanced resistance to poison and disease, Olivia Valentine. Perfect breeding stock for a future experiment.
Hartforge continued to operate behind the scenes waiting for an opertunity to present itself for him to open Olivia’s stasis tube and set her about on her destined purpose. By 2006 that confluence of events had occurred.
During the Terminus Invasion 0f 1993 Hartforge had seen a destructive power even greater than an Ultiman, Omega. Omega would be the ideal candidate for his next round of breeding experiments, however Omega’s charred body could not survive the process. The long-term effects of his pure entropic energy on his mortal body had rendered it useless without a containment suit. Hartforge realized what he truly wanted was Omega’s entropic energy, he would need to bind it to a body that could survive the sheer force of it however. Hartforge began to believe that only the physiology of an Ultiman could withstand the power indefinitely. Unfortunately for him he couldn’t find his way back to Ultima Thule again.
Then Superior managed to free himself. Hartforge knew that Superior had both the destructive impulse, and the physical power to survive gaining Omega’s power. Sadly his lust for power made it unlikely that he’d ever willingly following the path Hartforge foresaw for this Omega Man. He would need to breed a new Ultiman.
Since that day Hartforge has begun to lay the groundwork for the end of his plan. He began to prepare Olivia for release from stasis and also began to prepare a device to siphon the power from omega and place it in another being. His plan is grand. Olivia will seduce and become impregnated by Superior. Dr. Hartforge would then mentally condition the child. Hartforge will then place the resulting child in his device and drain the nearly limitless entropic energy from Omega and place it into the child. With that the child will be the Omega Man, and under Hartforge’s careful conditioning be prepared to fulfil his destiny of destruction and universal domination.
Of course subduing Omega is a task far beyond Doctor Hartforge’s abilities. To that end Hartforge has approached Twilight and offered him his skills. Since that day Hartforge has been aiding Twilight’s criminal enterprises. Now that Olivia is nearing readiness for her role Hartforge is sowing the seeds for securing Twilight’s aid. He is hinting that an overwhelming entropic energy would be necessary for Twilight to truly create his new world and Hartforge is pretending to research the possiblities.
Twilight doesn’t entirely trust the mad scientist, but he also knows that he produces results. Doctor Hartforge plans to use that reputation to trick Twilight into delivering him the Earth’s end.
