Real Name: Magnus Loder

Biography: Magnus Loder was born in Columbus, Ohio to a pair of mild-mannered citizens. At least, that’s what the Loder’s always wanted people to believe.

The truth is that Magnus was the son of Jacob Loder- the third man to fight under the banner of the Lodestone. The Lodestone dynasty had begun in 1945, when Wilhelm Meinstein, the son of Johann Meinstein (better known to the world as the Fuhrer) left Germany for America and tried to put his past behind him. Wilhelm didn’t want to be remembered as the son of the tyrant who had given birth to the Fourth Reich. He didn’t want to go down in history as a pawn used to attack the Vindicators. Thus, he invented William Loder and began his life anew. He joined the Vindicators himself, eventually coming to lead the second incarnation of the team during the Red Scare.

William Loder seemed to have it all- he was a charismatic champion of justice with a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. He had it all… and in one fleeting moment he was gone. His team allying with the Cold Warriors, the two teams ventured into Quar-Quar and were simply never heard from again.

His son, named Samuel after his father’s uncle, carried on the family name himself one day- serving as on Crusader’s team of Vindicators in the 1980s. Of course, he had a child of his own by that point. Jacob Loder was only a teenaged boy when his father joined the Vindicators… but he was a man when he joined the Aurelius’ incarnation of the team. He too eventually retired- opting to be the best dad he could be while continuing to protect his beloved Arch City. It was a lot for Magnus to live up to… but he always persevered.

From an early age, Magnus forsook everything quintessential to most children- all to further his own training. He knew that a great destiny lay out before him and he was determined to do right by it. He studied and pushed himself to memorize things through mnemonicdevice. He wrestled with archaic military tactics and how they might better be applied in a modern world. When Magnus was 13-years-old, the Vindicators VII disbanded and the United Nations decreed that elite teams of SPBs such as the Vindicators were not needed to defend the nation. The SES was developed- an elite team devoted to dealing with super-human situations in less-than-super-human ways. Magnus’ dreams hadn’t changed… they had merely changed course. Now dreaming of one day leaving for Turtle Bay and serving the United Nations as a SES agent, Magnus began to develop his skills as a negotiator.

Ultimately, Magnus came to learn of the New Vindicators Academy of America- and the possibility that the Vindicators would be reinstated through their graduates. Leaping at the chance, he joined the Academy in his senior year. It was more than an opportunity to learn from other legendary heroes though- it was a chance to actually interact with young people his own age and enjoy his adolescence before it had passed him by.

Physical Description: Sasuke appears as a young man in his late-teens, typically dressed in whatever clothing is in style at the time. Still, he prefers to wear geta sandels—allowing him to easily go barefoot when he adopts his simian form.

Biography: It is believed that Sarutobi Sasuke is actually the long-lost heir to the Takeda clan, Takeda Ichiro. Born in 1582, the newborn was stolen away by his mother when the Oda-Tokugawa forces destroyed the Takeda clan. Wounded in her escape, the child’s mother died in the wilderness and her baby’s cry was answered… by the monkeys.

Raised in the wild, Sasuke became proficient in tree-climbing. He was a master of the forest—dexterous and wily. It was in his adolescent years that he met his first human, the shinobi Kirigakure Saizou. Saizou shared his art with the amazingly talented child… watching him blossom into a ninja unlike any the world would ever see.

In 1600, Sasuke’s eighteenth year, the duo found themselves (along with their clans) embroiled in Tokugawa Ieyasu’s rally against Uesugi Kagekatsu. Siding with Uesugi, ten shinobi were chosen for their bizarre abilities and sent after a relic that was rumored to help whoever held it outlive their enemies.

Though they found the artifact power was unknowingly expended on the ten ninja present. Each was both blessed and cursed with agelessness. Time would forever pass them by, claiming friends, family and lovers before it would so much as look at them.

Though not ageless himself, Sanada Yukimura had an ability as fantastic as the powers the shinobi possessed: he could see the future and travel to any point in it. Seeing that there would be periods where the world would need their gifts, he encouraged the ten to become the Sanada Juuyuushi—the Ten Brave—and live out their nigh-immortal lives under his direction and in his service.

NEW VINDICATORS: Radix Malorum Est Cupiditas—One of Sanada’s most powerful visions involved the Nephilim known as Deimos. For years the Sanada Juuyuushi waited anxiously for the warrior’s appearance and when he finally entered their midst, Sasuke was unimpressed. He tested the proud youth in battle, easily besting him and deciding for himself that for the first time in centuries, Sanada’s prophesies had been wrong.

NEW VINDICATORS: Beatae Memoriae—Deimos eventually returned to Japan and demanded to face the surviving members of the Juuyuushi. Sasuke refused, having already bested him, and then proceeded to watch the Nephilim best the shinobi’s allies. When the others had failed, Sasuke entered battle once more against Deimos…

In this battle he revealed his true powers to Deimos, shifting into his beast form and fighting the Nephilim as an anthropomorphic monkey. In this stage Sasuke was at his strongest but even that was not enough to handle the Nephilim…

Real Name: Michael Luom

First Appearance: New Vindicators #6

Biography: When Makina Luom left her homeland to study in America, she never expected to find herself swept off her feet by the roguish gentleman Donald Donnohue. The week they spent together was like something from a fairytale… but without the happy-ever-after.

He was long gone before she learned she was pregnant and as she died in child birth, so did his chances of ever learning of his son’s existence. In a plantation-turned-hospital in New Orleans, Michael Luom was born. The boy was raised in an orphanage in the bayou- where a incident involving an alligator had the powers Michael inherited from his father manifest. Capable of turning his appendages into synthetic brass, the boy discovered that in his quasi-armored state he had enhanced strength, as well as the natural protection one would expect to come with metallic limbs. It was an ability he knew would mark him as more of an outsider… and one he kept hidden for many years.

The boy was well into his eighth year when his maternal grandparents found him and brought him back to the homeland of his mother’s ancestry. There, in a small Laotian village, his grandparents acted as the only doctors. Rather than go to school, he followed them- learning the holistic medicines they used to cure their people. Never truly learning to be a doctor- he was on his way to become a great medicine man…

It was during a monsoon that a fourteen-year-old Michael used his powers to brace against floodwaters- protecting his grandparents when a dam broke. Finally unable to escape that his destiny was greater than doling out remedies in the landlocked country, Michael headed for Tokyo, joining the New Vindicators Academy. His sensitivity, approachableness and level-headed manner make him friend and confidant to almost everyone at the school- including the cold and distant Sclera. Modest to a fault, Micheal fails to mention that he is one of the top students in his year and a likely candidate to be promoted to the ranks of the Vindicators…

NEW VINDICATORS: Sic Semper Tyrannis – During the Trials, Brass was drafted by Sclera, along with Brickhouse and Cabal. It was during the Fourth Trial that he and Brickhouse became engaged with saving Lodestone’s group and during the week he became closer with Rumble.

The two meshed on many things: their faith, their medical knowledge… even their powers were similar. The two had a short fling that seemed destined to fall apart as Rumble drew Melody as an opponent during the Final Trials: the very woman infatuated with Brass.

The two both passed and were put against Drake and Mutt. Realizing he stood no chance of defeating Rumble, Mutt moved for Brass and even went so far as to mutilate the man’s face. Taegan’s healing abilities saved Brass, though he would forever wear scars reminding him of the event.

NEW VINDICATORS: Memento Mori – Anomaly and Tripper had joined the Guardians, Fathom had mysterious left the school, Deimos was committed to the Spider, Loess was in jail and Lodestone was injured following the outbreak of the New Vindicators’ war with the Wisent. When Coach Crag called for assistance from the sister schools it was Brass, Backlash and Kiln who answered the call to arms, making Brass a temporary guest of the New Vindicators Academy of America.

ILLUMINATI: Wild Hunt – Though both Brass and Rumble were invited to join the Vindicators, Rumble put her acceptance on hold and joined the Illuminati in their hunt to find her father. Brass continued on, joining the Asian branch of Vindicators with the intent to leave for America once Rumble’s journey came to an end.

NEW VINDICATORS: Para Bellum – After receiving word that the Illuminati had been captured, Brass moved to join Loess’ group of rogue Vindicators and called on Backlash and Kiln to join him. The group arrived on Atlantis and saved Anomaly and Tripper, Fathom and Hourglass from Aamon, Barbatos, Pruslas and Rashervak. Continuing on with the group, Brass was eventually reunited with Rumble…

NEW VINDICATORS: Et Spe - …and not long after the two were separated. After passing through the barrier surrounding New York City, Brass encountered Brickhouse, Saya and Split. Before long they also met Melody and then their band encountered Rumble, possessed by Cimejas.

Rumble’s strength put down Brickhouse, Saya and Split, leaving only Brass and Melody to fight her. Brass refused to fight his love, forcing Melody into a rematch with Rumble. When Melody seemed victorious, Cimejas took over Brass’ body instead… who Melody now refused to raise a hand against.

Rumble, however, had no such problems with fighting the man she loved… though her injuries given to her by Melody proved to be her downfall. Before Brass could strike the final blow he was attacked by the Rhino, with Boson and Detective Shirley Holmes moving to protect the others. In the end, the Rhino managed to exercise the Nephilim, freeing Brass of Cimejas’ control and leaving him to doubt Rumble’s feelings towards him…

Real Name: Drew Jenkins

First Appearance: New Vindicators #1

Biography: Born and raised in Brooklyn, Drew was always a nice kid… he was just never bright. Every report card he ever brought home showcased grades that were dismal (but passing!) and the same two comments each time: “Continues to make an effort” and “Courteous, cooperative, and a pleasure to have in class.”

As he reached his high school years, his father began to worry. The level of influence Drew’s girlfriend had on him was cause for concern; Erin Peters had a knack for finding trouble. Their freshman year it was simply shoplifting. That had escalated to her threatening other students at knife-point their sophomore year and charges of possession come the year after. As their senior year began, she had begun taking BOOST—a drug that surged the powers of Neo-Sapiens and gave humans a euphoric high. Drew tried to get her to stop—to change for him—but every promise of change was dashed by a visit to her dealers: Bret and Kyle Morris.

NEW VINDICATORS: Radix Malorum Est Cupiditas – Unsure what to do for her, Drew found himself browsing used video games at White Pawn—a hock shop in DUMBO. He was surprised when the Morris brothers burst through the doors but not too surprised to learn they were running from the cops. The surprising thing was that they had shot one cop… and were taking the patrons hostage.

A few inspiring words and a pat on the back from Sam White, owner and proprietor of White Pawn, had Drew charge the pair. Kyle was dealt with easily enough… but Drew’s body mimicked Bret’s Neo-Sapien powers and transfigured him into a being of pure white light.

The incident brought Drew to the New Vindicators Academy where he continued his reputation: Drew continued to make an effort and was always courteous, cooperative and a pleasure to have in class.
Eventually, Sam White revealed himself as the Fallen seraphim, Samael, and that Drew was not actually a Neo-Sapien. Drew was, in fact, a human empowered with abilities by Samael, to be used as a contingency plan against one of the greatest evils the world had ever known: Apocatastasis. It wasn't long after that Samael was slain in battle—a daunting defeat given that Samael was not a mortal being. In order to protect his protégé, Samael transferred his abilities into Drew...

While fighting against their own teacher, Drew synched his powers up with the white hellfire beast. Upon defeating the terror, Drew's powers—boosted by Samael's previous transference—overloaded the young man and ended his life…

Something of a collaberation. There reached a point when the player's work life prevented him from continuing with our group, at which point it was desided that the character would finish out the last few sessions of the storyline as an NPC. At the point, I shuffled a few points to make up for a few neglected areas (my players are in the habit of over-looking their saves). Simple stuff like dropping from a 12 Strength to a 10 to throw a +1 to Reflex and Will. For the most part- it's the player's baby with some minor tweaks from his GM.

Biography: Born to a Korean father and a Japanese mother, Kwon Aya always new she was different… she just didn’t know how different. Inside of her burns a fiery and passionate soul… and the very power of the sun.

Capable of channeling pure plasma energy, Aya is the very symbol of her homeland. She is a living sun, a being capable of generating a heat more explosive than anything on earth. Beloved by the people of Japan, she is one of the most famous of her school- having used her powers for the good of mankind before even considering attending the New Vindicators Academy of Asia.

NEW VINDICATORS #15
After carrying her team through the first four rounds of the Trials, Aya found herself pitted against Scrimshaw in the Final Trial. Despite all expectations being on her, she lost to the European and was eliminated from the Trials.

Michuru and Amalgam's builds are a bit spoilerish- Amalgam (and Anomaly) should be up soon (coinciding with the end of New Vindicators #6) but Michy's a long way coming... Our resident bad-boy on the other hand...

DEIMOS (Power Level 10)

Real Name: Jeremy Carlson
Height / Weight: 5'9" / 145 lbs.

First Appearance: New Vindicators #1

Biography: Evangeline Carlson was an American who felt the best way to spend the summer between her high school and college years was to backpack across Europe. It was in her travels that she met a man, a suave and charming rogue of a man who stole her heart and made passionate love to her one night in France. The next morning he was gone... but he had left her with his seed.

Twin boys were conceived that night- Evangeline learned of them not long after. The pregnancy proceeded disturbing fast- with her going into labor not three months after meeting the children's father. She gave birth to her sons in Gloucestershire, England and told her tale to the doctor; the man hadn't believed her farfetched story until he delivered the twin brothers- each with burning black eyes.

Believing them to be spawns of the devil, the man plotted to drown the brothers in the spas the town was famous for. Learning of the plot, Evangeline took the boys and fled to Bishop's Cleeve where she met a priest who helped her flee the wrath of the people the respected doctor had gathered. Still, the two were separated- Evangeline escaping with one of the children while the other was still in the hands of Father Anthony.

Still, Evangeline didn't keep her child long. She managed a return to the states and left her son with her sister Josette. Josette and her husband, Doctor John O’Reilly, raised young Jeremy Carlson as their own.

In his earlier years, Jeremy was the epicenter for violence. His new family had spared no expense in attempting to give Jeremy every chance he could get and he received each the same way. Every school he went to, he started fights. He had no respect for authority. He was the poster child for juvenile delinquency. Halfway through his junior year, he ran away from home- intending to turn to a life of petty theft to provide for himself. His first night out he was arrested... and released thanks to the influence of the Wisent.

Jeremy was chosen by the Wisent to be one of the founding members of the Bisons- the cornerstone of the man's new criminal empire. It was through the seven young people that he funneled his orders and thanks to the drug (BOOST) provided that Jeremey's Nephilim powers manifested.

Adopting the name Deimos, Jeremy served with the utmost loyalty. Still, his loyalty to his employer was rivaled by his loyalty to Taria Reynolds (Enyo). The young girl stole Deimos' heart and together they began to plot their retirment. Bogart learned of their plans to leave and commanded the others to hunt them down. Believing his beloved already claimed by the retaliation, Deimos fled to the home of his aunt and uncle, seeking solace with them.

Enyo had not been killed however; she had been given a choice: betray her lover or be executed. She set a car bomb intended for Deimos and claimed only the young Nephilim's aunt in the explosion. Deimos used the confusion to fake his own death and turned to the New Vindicators Academy- a group he had learned about from Bogart.

NEW VINDICATORS: Radix Malorum Est Cupiditas – Early on, Deimos was viewed as a possible ally to the Affiliation. He was approached by Blitzkrieg, Black Widow and Lurker and given the offer to join them in the coming war. Claiming himself to be too much of a wild card to take orders from anyone, Deimos chose to voice his decision with a blast of hellfire. With Frostbite's help, the young man was able to hold his own against the villains.

In the wake of numerous students' deaths, the rest of the senior class was ordered to meet with psychiatrist Jason Pickford. Deimos failed to attend his session- opting instead to spend it with a girl (Shade) he met in the lobby several floors below Pickford's office. Such a meeting was observed by Doctor Pickford- who watched his son with great interest.

Following his humiliating defeat at Tide's hands, Deimos journeyed with his teammates to Japan where he met Yukimura Sanada. The man bestowed Deimos with a katana he claimed was destined to slay one of the Seven Fallen- a group which Deimos' father was counted amongst. Deimos' ability with the sword was then tested by Sarutobi Sasuke, the immortal swordsman found Deimos lacking in fighting prowess and handed him another humiliating loss.

While on a date with Shade, Deimos was abducted by his dead aunt Josette and tortured for days before his companions from the Academy arrived. Though they saved him, they did not encounter his aunt...
Caught in an explosion meant to claim his life, Deimos lost the use of his right eye. Despite such injuries, he participated in the White War- where his katana was stolen by his half-brother, the Shadow, and used to slay Samael. Immediately after watching his chance to kill his father stolen from him, Deimos' consciousness was siphoned into Michuru's beast form.

NEW VINDICATORS: Sic Semper Tyrannis – Throughout the Trials, Deimos clashed with a young man with similar powers. This youth, calling himself Phobos, possessed a background shockingly similar to Deimos'. Their histories coincided with each other, leaving Phobos to conclude that Deimos was the long lost brother he had been told of by Father Anthony. Ultimately the two collided during the Final Trial- with Deimos failing to overpower his brother even in his beast form.

NEW VINDICATORS: Memento Mori – Now a graduate of the New Vindicators Academy, Deimos found himself again going up against Bogart. He learned the truth of Enyo's betrayal and was forced to tell his companions of his involvement with the Bisons. Leading the New Vindicators in a valiant charge against his former allies, Deimos was shot in the chest and administered KNITTER, a new drug the Bisons were peddling. He had seen their lackeys inject themselves with the serum and regenerate fatal wounds. Though it saved his life and restored his lost eye, it took away his powers- leaving Deimos as a normal human.

Distraught over the loss of his Nephilim powers, Deimos turned to Shade to comfort him- only to have their love interrupted by Frostbite. It was then that Shade was revealed to be nothing more than an illusion created by Deimos' already fragile mindset. Determining that his aunt's attack on him as well as the graffitied wall left by his mother were additional illusions, Deimos was declared mentally unstable and turned over to the care of Doctor Jason Pickford.

VINDICATORS: Coup d’état – While responding to an attack on the Spider by the Sentry, the Vindicators watched as Deimos was unleashed in the assault. With his new-found freedom the young man evoked his restored powers and aided his former allies in stopping the attempt on Pandora's life. Freed from his father, Deimos began working alongside the Vindicators before leaving them to start his own private war against Abaddon.

ILLUMINATI: Wild Hunt – Thanks to Puck’s manipulations, Deimos found himself going to Avalon with the Illuminati. There, the heroes were charged by Auberon with the search for the Anathema Ring. As the ring was also hunted by Abaddon, Deimos eagerly joined the group’s quest.

Ultimately, when the heroes came up against Purgatory, all of the Illuminati save Deimos and Xrix were abducted.

NEW VINDICATORS: Para Bellum – When Loess arrived at the Chapel, looking for Rumble, she was surprised to find Deimos and shocked to hear his tale of survival. Loess amended her plans from simply saving Lodestone to include rescuing Rumble and the Illuminati as well and Deimos found himself temporarily joining forces with the Vindicators once more.

Very, very nice build. What does the Wide do for the Darkness control? I know that on Dynamic powers it allows for more than one Dynamic powers to be used at full strength, but on a non-dynamic power does it actually do anything? 'Cos non-dynamic powers can't be used at the same time as any other alternate powers. Can they?

Why is Deimos' Hellfire control the same color as Pandora's? I thought each Hellfire controller had their own unique color in Oubliette.

Also I noticed that on Lazarus' build he only has regeneration but in the fight between him and Amalgam, Lazarus makes claims that while his 'body is being stitched back together it is also enhancing it', which to me implies he has a triggered boost to his strength or something, he then procedes to heft a massive iron girder and use it to send Amalgam flying, which further suggests to me that he does have a triggered boost ability. Am I missing something?

Also, I thought Amalgam was a PC so how can his build be spoiler-ish?

Basically, the wide applies to the main array. If Deimos feels like it, he can turn off everything else to just blanket an area in darkness.

Deimos and Pandora are not Neo-Sapiens, but Nephilim. Each Nephilim's color falls into one of seven colours (black, red, blue, green, yellow, white and purple) depending on their parentage. Deimos and Pandora have the same father.

Kind of. Lazarus was under the effect of an illegal drug that pumps his powers. It's a plot point for later on- in stories that deal more with Boost (the drug, not the power...).

Amalgam is indeed a PC... but in New Vindicators #6, something happens to him physically. I was hesitant to show his stats as it would spoil what's coming up in the story in the days to come...

You could always do a before and after post for Amalgam so we can see the changes that happened to him. But hey, it is your thread so you can do whatever you want.

I was actually planning on it. He does take on a new codename at that point- opting to go by Anomaly instead.
