Sulu is a pretty good physics kind of guy, skilled fencer and Judo practitioner, and all around nice guy. I've included a fencer rapier in with Sulu's gear because he uses it to great effect in one of my favourite episodes from the original series (The Naked Time). At any rate you can see the hints of the later Captain Sulu (CO of the USS Excelsior) with some of his skills.

A note on Uhura's first name. She never once receives one on screen, although the TOS second season DVD commentary indicates that both Gene Rodenberry and Nichelle Nichols liked Nyota which means star in Swahili, similarly how Uhura means freedom in the same language. So as far as I'm concerned Nyota is as close to as official as Uhura gets for a first name. Besides, I think its a rather nice first name for a character that would inspire a generation of women to reach for their dreams.
You might be wondering about her skills, particularly in terms of computers and craft. In Who Mourns for Adonis?? Spock praises Uhura for her exceptional skill with rewiring, and reprogramming, the entire communications computer to try and defeat Apollo's energy shield.
