ZiferCwellan wrote:hmm. I'm sensing a pattern here... Robin fights Kaje and almost wins, Kaje gets a major update. Robin fights Jester and for all intents and purposes did win, Jester gets a major update... Maybe we should change robin's name from 'Nighthood' to "Villain-Debuggerman"

It's true, seeing him in action against Robin did prompt me to fiddle with his array and take some things that really should be separate devices out of it. But then, I also wanted to show off the art I'd commissioned, and The jester is one of those characters I like to fiddle with.

I think that fits Robin., Zipher. But you know how Stray loooves to change up his NPC's especially after a battle. I don't mind though. It gives me new and fun ways to try to defeat them! Look for Jinx's adventure with The Shepard soon to come! 8)

I like to think of it as "molding the NPC to better fit my expectations of his performance."

One thing I should point out...Nemesis might not exactly help you much against the Jester, as he has very few actual powers. Same for the Hound Dog (Though the Shepard is another matter).

PROFILE
Alternate Identity: Gary Redrush
Identity: Public
Occupation: Celebrity Superhero
Group Affiliation: Solo/Drake City Town Council
Sex: Male
Age: 47 (looks much younger)
Height: 5’ 9”
Weight: 190 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Abnormal Type: Nova

Allegiances: City (Drake City)
Motivations: Recognition, Thrills
Complications: Fame (Drake City's Own Superhero!), Reputation (Sell-Out to the Man, Narcissistic Glory-Hog, Everyone thinks he's a Closet Homosexual), Responsibility (Drake City representative), Rivalry (Von Jeggett, Dash Diamond, the Watchmen)
Virtue: Fortitude. "Never give up! Never surrender!" is Mad Dash's motto.
Vice: Gluttony, Envy. Mad Dash has a problem with letting go. He tends to indulge himself in pleasures at the drop of a hat, and his competitive streak pushes him to see life as a grand game of winners and losers.
Nature: Competitor. Mad Dash sees life as a challenge, and he strives to be newer, faster, better, best. Everything becomes a stretch to test his talents, though he has a competitive streak that sometimes makes dealing with him difficult
Demeanor: Gallant. Mad Dash is a shameless peacock and will pull off flashy moves just to be noticed. He tends to hog the limelight whenever he appears.

Description: Mad Dash is lean and built like a runner. He is also fairly handsome, and most people are surprised to learn he's well into his forties. His superhero costume is singular, a garish green and orange spandex jumpsuit that garners many snickers in the Abnormal community.

Powers and Abilities: Mad Dash is a speedster. He can cross the United States in an hour, can generate localized sonic booms, hit people at Mach One, and generally pull all those other sorts of Speedster tricks.

Tactics: Mad Dash tends to specialize in normal crime and has been deputized by the Drake City Police Department. He typically acts to subdue criminals first and foremost, using his speed and acrobatic prowess to bring criminals low. He tends to always fight to subdue, rather than injure.

That said, most of Mad Dash's time is actually spent being a public figure. He represents the city in athletic events, promotional ads, and charity functions, and also works as disaster relief. Since he can be anywhere in the country inside of an hour, he's usually elsewhere. Often he and Dash Diamond, one of the LA Stars (A Los Angeles-based superteam), try to show each other up in mock battles and public appearances across the country (like an infamous March of Dimes charity event where the two speedsters involved the greater parts of California, Arizona, and Nevada in their brawl).

Background: Gary Redrush always wanted to be seen. He practiced night and day to qualify for the Olympics in track and field events, and finally won a place on America's team for the 2004 Olympics, the very first Olympiad held after the Shadow Weave incident. At the time, most of the world was still reeling from the first appearance of the Novas, and very few people understood how the Eruption occurred.

So when Gary Erupted due to the stress of the final lap of the men's 400 meter sprint, the public was shocked, especially when the sonic boom rocked the stadium and knocked over the other contestants. Gary was disqualified, but the reason stated by the Olympic Committee (Suspected Steroid Use) was lambasted by the public at large, and Gary sued the Committee on grounds of discrimination. He won, but the ruling remained, and he had to wait until the 2008 Olympics to compete again. Still, the fame from this event made him an instant celebrity, and he reveled in the competition. The 2008 Olympics featured Nova-only events and was the most popular Olympiad ever televised.

Gary, now calling himself "Mad Dash," was one of the Abnormals who rode the Nova Boom, the golden age of nova popularity. But that Golden Age came to an abrupt end when the Project Proteus conspiracy was uncovered and the Avatars appeared in the world. Mad Dash did his best to adapt, but his popularity waned with the loss of confidence in the Abnormals that follwed the start of the Avatar Crisis. He enlisted in the Army, but despite his powers he really didn't fit in well there. He returned to the US just after the Avatars attack New York and Los Angeles, and he found a different world awaiting him. He saw gazes of mistrust and fear replace the looks of wonder and admiration, and for a while he despaired.

Eventually he wound up in Drake City just after the passage of the Abnormal Registration Act. When a group of psychotic Abnormal escaped from Hillside asylum, he came out retirement, using his abilities to bring several to justice, along with a new Vigilante group calling itself "The Watchmen." This brought him to the attention of Eric Lang, who offered him a place on his team, which Mad Dash eventually accepted. His career as a Watchmen gained the attention of the Drake City town council, and, drawn by his personality, contacted him when the Watchmen were disbanded. He was contracted as a public figure, and in this capacity he remains to this day. He represents Drake City much the ways sports teams of the late 20th century once did. He is now Drake City's Own official superhero, champion of law and order.

Beyond The Dome, Conclusion

Vincent Kaje watched the monitors in satisfaction. Excellent. Robin’s transformation was progressing as planned. Kaje was disappointed that he’d decided not to take up the offer to join his gang, though.

“Nothing for it then.” He muttered as he pulled out the video feed DVDs. “If you aren’t smart enough to join me, then I guess you have to die.”

The game had just become more interesting.

He was aware that he was taking an awful risk. He was immortal, but not invincible, but after twenty years with no one but his brother to challenge him, he was growing bored. Remial Mortos was a fool, not a challenge at all. All the Ghoul King cared about was his toxins and his revenge; to him, Kaje was just an obstacle, and Kaje felt much the same about him. It was the same with the ARD. They would never truly present a threat to him…just an annoyance he would continually escape.

But now…now he had constructed a true adversary. Someone he was not sure he could truly beat. Someone who he would enjoy stripping the humanity from. Even if Robin managed to beat him, by the time Kaje was done with him there wouldn’t be a person left, just a beast worse than Kaje himself had ever been.

Not that he seriously expected Robin to ever really beat him. Not really. But the game would be much more fun with an element of risk.

Vincent took the DVDs and watched them. 24 hours of a man’s descent into Hell. Not a bad way to pass the time. But he wasn’t just recording this to get off. He began to choose various parts of the footage. He was a practiced editor; by the time he was done, he had a film that told a story. The climax was Robin and the girl. Oh, that had really gotten his rocks off, to see Robin turn on the girl like that. He had no sound bites, unfortunately…the cameras only recorded the video. But the silent movie he’d made was damning enough. He began to burn copies on to DVD. He lovingly titled each one.

Dead by Dawn Special Edition: Death of a Hero.

And then he got some packages, and arranged a UPS pickup.

“And so, Round 3 begins.” He chuckled as the truck drove off. “Let’s see how you deal with THIS gambit.”

p.s. I suck at writing but he does have a much more intricate background than that.

Blood Song: The Birth.

June 2nd, 2028. Somewhere in the Hellhole.

She reclined in the bathtub, and felt her life end. The gashes in her wrist poured her blood into the tub and mixed with the water, but the bottle of pills she’d ingested before doing this ensured that she was feeling very little pain. It was ending, she realized. She couldn’t stop it now, even if she wanted to, and for a moment, there was fear, as the survival instinct tried to make itself felt. But it was too late, and the girl wondered briefly about what awaited her on the other side. And then, there was no life inside her eyes, and her body went limp.

Minutes passed, and the girl wondered what had gone wrong. She wasn’t going anywhere. Her soul was not leaving. Fear came to her again. Something was wrong. She was dead, wasn’t she? Wasn’t the pain supposed to stop?

She never noticed the red mist pouring into the room. She tried to move, but her arms and legs were just dead weight. She tried to scream, but she couldn’t even breathe. She was dead, and yet she was still trapped in her corpse! NO! NO! It wasn’t supposed to be this way! She began to panic as she wondered who would find her body, and when. She prayed it wouldn’t be that asshole who’d driven her to this…he might be drunk enough and horny enough not to care that she was dead.

The red mist began seeping into her wounds. The girl began to panic as rigor mortis set in. She felt her limbs growing rigid, and wondered if this was what being damned to Hell was really like. No booming judgments, no fires, and no pitchforks, just being trapped in your body as it slowly fell apart. She began to pray to anyone who could hear her. Please, please…don’t do this to me…

Hours passed before she heard a door opening. Then she heard a voice.

“Jeannie…oh Jeannie…come on, babe...I'm ready to party...we'll have some fun...”

No. Oh nonononononono. Her nostrils took in the scent of cheap whiskey. She remembered the day the social worker had come, and had made notes, and she’d had hope of escaping him. But then she read in the paper about her, and how she’d been run over by a drunk driver, and she knew who had really done it, and that this was the only way she could escape him…and now she was trapped with him. Forever…

“Come on out, Jeannie…I got something for ya…something real nice…”
Footsteps in the hall. A knob rattled, then another. He must be really horny tonight, she thought. He wants it badly. The red mist was almost gone now. Please…oh god, please…someone help me…

Perhaps someone can. Said a voice from nowhere. Perhaps. But there is a price you must pay for the assistance.

The footsteps came closer. “Jeannie…you know I hate it when you hide from me…don't tease me like this, Jeannie...there's only so much abuse a man can take...”

I don’t care. I’ll pay it. I’ll steal it if I have to. Just get me away from HIM!

Very well. Just remember…we have a deal.

The latch rattled. She’d locked the bathroom door, so he began kicking it. “Jeannie, you bitch! I HATE it when you lock the door on me…” The door was weak…it didn’t take much to break the lock. He looked into the room. He blinked. “What the fu…

He never finished the sentence. Her hand lashed out like a knife, opening his neck, making a pez dispenser out of his skull. He was dead before he hit the floor.

She stood there, naked, crying, covered in blood, the gashes down her wrist open again. She was still dead, she realized…but her body worked again. She curled into a ball. “Oh god…oooooooooooh god…” she wailed.

We come into this world naked, screaming, and covered in blood. The voice whispered to her. But if you play it right, that sort of fun doesn’t have to stop there.

“”Y-You’re some kind of demon, aren’t you?” She whispered. “Oh, god, I’ve sold my soul to the devil…”

Something like that. Now I want to collect my payment. Go over to the body and drink his blood.

“H-his blood? Why?”

Because if you don't, I leave, and you get to spend the next eternity trapped inside your slowly rotting corpse.

She hesitated, then went over his body, knelt over him, and put her mouth to his open neck. And she began to drink. Power filled her. She felt the rigor mortis leaving her limbs, and she felt…almost alive again. And then she felt sick. But she resisted the urge to vomit, least whatever had whispered to her make good its threat.

“What now?”

We find Vincent Kaje, and we help him bring me to Earth.

She shivered. Her mother had frightened her with tales of the leader of the Bloodfangs when she was a little girl. She had no wish to be anywhere near him.

“Why?”

Because he made a deal, too. And now it’s time to collect.

“What did he promise you?”

He promised to make me his bride. No more questions for now. We have work to do.

She stood again, and got dressed. She tried to wrap her wrists up, but blood kept oozing out of them, and soaked through all the bandages. So she just left them open, and walked out of the apartment…and into the night.

Announcement!

I recently purchased the Mastermind's Manual and, after looking it over, I see some house rules that I really like, so I'm going to be updating my builds to reflect the new rules. Stay tuned!

Drake City Local News

“Residents of the Pinkerton Alley district were shocked by sightings of a giant, glowing robot striding down Carmina Ave. early this morning. The robot evaded police barricades and began leaping northeast towards the interstate. Several air units were dispatched, and Drake City’s Own superhero Mad Dash was called to the scene in one of the largest task forces assembled in recent years. The construct was subdued and there have been no reported casualties, but City Councilman James Farvo has released a statement expressing concern over the ‘excessive manpower’ required to apprehend the suspect and has called for an immediate inquiry over the state of Drake City’s STAR unit’s ability to respond and react to crises.”

“Police are asking residents of Pinkerton Alley to be on the lookout for a rogue abnormal who escaped ARD custody earlier this morning. The suspect is described ‘surrounded by a glowing, crackling field of electrical energy’ and is considered dangerous. A reward is being offered for information leading to the capture and containment of this individual. He was last spotted around the Deva’s Dystopia nightclub.”

“Citizens of Drake City joined several prominent Drake City personalities in protest of several proposed changed to the Citizen’s Vigilance Code. City Councilman Gus Marko called the measures ‘Fascist,’ and quoted several recent incidents were vigilantes protected by the code aided police in the capture of dangerous suspects. Presidential candidate Helen Quintal is expected to visit Drake City next week in support of the proposed measures.”

“This just in: An ARD capture gone bad was caught by Channel 3 news correspondents after Dimitri Von Jeggett, member of the Watchman vigilante group, showed up on scene to offer his assistance. These images, taken at the scene, clearly show the inability of agents at the scene to contain the situation. Von Jeggett has gone on record with a statement to the effect of, ‘The ARD has failed. This is why people like the Watchmen are needed.’ ARD officials have yet to release a statement and could not be reached for comment.”

“In related news, three members of the STAR squad known as ‘The Pack’ have been arrested and charged with illegal search and seizure and police brutality after Kira Flannery, an abnormal, and an unidentified male were rushed to Mercy General Hospital tonight. The charges allege that the STAR members illegally detained, beat, and then shot Ms. Flannery after the suspect was apprehended on an alleged escape charge. Michael Flannery, a junior partner at the law offices of Wolfe, Feng, and Ley and father of the victim, has filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the ARD, and has called for the immediate resignations of Assistant Director Felix Spencer and Sergeant Rex Hartigan, the immediate supervisors of the accused.”

"That's the news for June 2nd, 2028. Stay tuned to Channel 3, your source for local news."

PROFILE
Alternate Identity: David Wyler
Identity: Public
Occupation: Mass Murderer and Terrorist
Group Affiliation: Independent/The Dirty Dozen/The Dark Knights
Sex: Male
Height: 5’ 6”
Weight: 173 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Abnormal Type: Nova
Allegiances: None
Motivations: Revenge, Destruction
Complications: Enemy (The ARD, Dark-Hawke Industries), Hatred (Eric Lang, Kevin Newberry), Reputation (Homicidal terrorist), Temper
Virtue: Justice. When Holocaust looks outside of himself, he feels a righteous anger at people suffering injustice, particularly other Abnormals.
Vice: Wrath, Envy. Anger is Holocaust's defining trait. He believes he was unfairly screwed out of a normal life when his powers developed, and has decided to take it out on the world in revenge.
Nature: Vigilante. Holocaust is bitter and angry over the loss he feels he has suffered, and has vowed to make "them" pay, no matter the consequences. At present, he is trying to look outside his own anger, but that hasn't necessarily changed his vigilante mindset.
Demeanor: Penitent. After a massive destructive spree, David was forced to deal with the consequences of his actions, and this has given him a new perspective on life and his place in the world. He realizes now that he has gone too far, and is now trying (without much success) to make up for his past deeds.

Description: Holocaust is blonde, fit, and would be considered handsome if a lifetime of anger and bitterness hadn't given him a semi-permanent scowl. He dresses in dark colors and usually wears shades to hide his eyes, which glow a fiery orange. Occasionally a nimbus of fire flares around his body, usually when he is upset or angry. He can control the color of his flames.

Powers: Once, Dave had the power to psychokinetically excite molecules, creating fire from thin air. Since the Dark-Hawke people got a hold of him, however, his powers have evolved. He now has the ability to tear apart the nuclear forces holding matter together, as well as control and direct those forces as he wills. All he really knows, however, is manipulating fire, so his bursts tend to be destructive flares of radioactive fire, along with a few transformation tricks. In time, he might be able to learn how to use his ability to actually transform matter, but that would require pulling him out of the bitter rage he feels at the world. And that's not likely as long as he suffers from the side effects of his power: leaking low-grade radiation that causes radiation sickness in those around him. His powers have advanced to the point where the sub-dermal nullification chips used by the ARD cannot be relied on to control his powers should he get captured and only the injection of "Moxie" (Moxinaquantimine), a dangerous psychotropic, can keep his powers contained, which means the ARD regards him as a Class-A threat. His powers are based on his emotions, and David is unstable at best. Occasionally, this power causes him to erupt in spectacular power surges.

Tactics: David is not a particularly clever tactician; he usually prefers to throw fireballs while flying around. When he gets whipped into a rage, he’s liable to start flinging AOE fireballs everywhere, or else use some of his nastier tricks (like radiation poisoning or his knuckle effects) against single irritants. Since he has Absorption Healing, fighting fire with fire (or any other sort of energy attack) plays right into his hands.

Background: Coming Soon!

 Presenting one of the most destructive villains in the BNW next to the Avatars. Formerly operating under the name of Inferno, Holocaust was recently exposed to Avatar Energy, which gave him a MASSIVE boost in power (he was formerly PL 10).

 His Radiation Poisoning ability uses Progression in Reverse, lowering the time between checks from a day to about a minute. Very nasty, but it still follows all the other disease traits.

 Major Update: Shuffled around a few points. Specifically, Absorption is now limited to energy and I've given him a normal Forcefield Limited to Physical damage linked to it. That way, he still has a decent damage save against non-energy attacks, but it's not overpoweringly absorbing everything. It's also Ablative, so eventually, it'll wear down. Since I didn't make the Force field Impervious, I got a few more points to spread around. Mainly used them to give him some more ranks in some of his skills and a couple more Immunities. Most of the skill increases are background choices, and I shuffled a lot of skills around based on some suggestions.

 I would like to thank Loki Odinstorm for his help in building the background.

 Update 6/23/07: A minor face lift to David's stats, following along with changes in game. Most notably, I've replaced his Weakness Drawback with the Power Surge drawback from the Mastermind's Manual. I also added a few APs that he's developed, most notably a standard Burst-Area fireball and a teleport effect. Also, his Demeanor has changed to reflect in-game character growth.
M&M is not the system for reproducing real science. It's the system for tying real science to a chair and taunting it while you fly around blasting people with the heat of your x-ray vision.

Ok guys, here's the stories that I've been promising!

Into the Sewers

It was dark down here. It reeked of feces and other matter that neither Jinx or Tre wanted to describe. But it was safer than up there where the ARD agents had come. If it was to be here among all the nastiness, or her freedom, Jinx took this. It wasn’t ALL that bad anyway, she was used to the smell of the sewers from when she ran with the Cryptkickers. But she wasn’t running for her life then. Just the usual “errands” that Remial had her do. But she had never been down
this part of the sewers before.
God she wish she had a least a flashlight. Her escape from the hospital only allowed her to grab her clothes. What a mess! She thought to herself. How they were going to get out of this one, she didn’t know. Maybe a bit of Irish Luck will actually be on her side for once.

Common Jinx. There’s got to be a way out of here somewhere. Maybe up head.”

“You’ve got to have a flashlight or something we can see with right?”

He looks down at his hospital gown.

“ Unless they stashed one here in the nonexistent pocket, I don’t think so.”

As if an answer from God, a flash of bright light appeared in front of them, along with loud popping noises.

“Tre, someone is shooting at us!” Jinx screamed.

“No shit Jinx. I think the ARD has found us!”

From behind them in the darkness, a deep voice from the vast darkness. A haunting voice that is all too familiar with Jinx.

“Hey rabbit. You better run. I’m coming to get you rabbit.”

It’s the Hound Dog!. That means that the Sheppard isn’t too far behind! We got to get out of here NOW Tre!” Jinx screamed into his ear. “I’ll be Damned if I let him catch me again!”

“ I think I see a door on the other side of the sewer, but that means we’ll have to swim for it.”

“Oh Crap!”

“Exactly. Ready… let’s go!!”

They both jump into dark, murky, fecal enriched waters and tried to swim for the other side, but the currant was too strong and the stench, not to mention, getting some of the poo filled water into her mouth causing Jinx to gag, causing her to stop swimming and let the currant sweep her away.
Before Jinx, got too far from him, Tre grabbed her and started for the other side.

The currant swept them downward. In the short distance, a loud rumbling noise was heard. A waterfall that lead straight down to the purifying processor.
With all his strength, Tre managed to get himself and Jinx safely to the other side of the sewer just before going over the waterfall.

“Ok Jinx. I think we’re safe for a bit, but the ARD is still on our butts. Do you think you can get this door opened?”

“I don’t have any tools on me, but I do have this hairpin for such an emergency, I’ll give it a shot.”

Just as Jinx said that, another shot rang out. Hitting closer to home, but still missing them, barely.

“The lock won’t budge!”

“Try harder Jinx! I’m already a pin cushion from those scalpels at the hospital, I don’t want to add bullet holes to the mix!”

Shots fired again. This time they hit the lock on the door, allowing the door to swing right open.

It’s dark in this room as well, but has a little bit more light than the sewer. It’s cold. Freezing cold. As if they stepped right into a meat locker.

“Jinx, see if you can try to shed a bit of light in here. Look for a light switch or something
.”

“There isn’t one. I already looked, but what’s this?”

From the ceiling, numerous meat hooks dangled. On them, various corpses hung from them. It was a meat locker. A Cryptkicker meat locker. A place they stored their victims so the ghouls could come back and feast when they were hungry.

“I don’t like the looks of this place Tre. I know what it is and if I’m correct…”

Suddenly in front of them, chains started rattling and hideous sound of moaning and hissing. While gunshots started going off again behind them.

“I don’t know about you Tre, but I like to keep my hide intact and I know that the ghouls in front of us won’t stop until there’s nothing left and with a bounty for my head with the Cryptkickers, not to mention with the ARD, I think I’ll take my chances with the ARD. At least with them, I’ll have a slight chance to escape with my body whole instead of having those nasty ghouls have their fun.”

Raising her hands high in the air so the Pack wouldn’t have any mistake that she was turning herself in, Jinx walked head held high back into the sewer.

Listen guys. I’m surrendering, but you have a bigger problem on your hands than me…”

We know exactly what’s in there Jinx.” Hound Dog replied maliciously as he covered her with his machine gun. “And we’ve come for the both of you! Okay men, on my word, open fire and send those SOB’s straight to Hell were they belong!”

Just as the Pack began to shoot into the meat locker, Tre scrambles out the door with the look of terror on his face.

“UMM… hi.”

“Sir, it looks like we got another abnormal here. What should we do with him?”

“Tie him up sergeant and bring him with us. I think The Sheppard will know what to do with him.”

After tying up Tre, Hound Dog and the Pack start making the way out of the sewers. With Tre being, well Tre, he starts talking nonstop to annoy Hound Dog and his Pack.

Disturbed and frustrated with Tre’s antics, Hound Dog orders his men to do what they see fit in quieting him as long as it doesn’t kill Tre. So they beat him mercilessly and when that doesn’t quiet him, they put a grenade in his mouth with a string that Hound Dog himself had a hold of. But that didn’t stop him.

With much delight on Jinx’s part, Tre starts humming to whatever random song he can think of or whatever he felt like, Jinx wasn’t sure. Until they were finally separated upon the arrival of Sheppard’s headquarters. Even then, Jinx swears she could hear Tre’s humming in some distant room.
