First, two quick modifications to Ember's original character sheet. Add Flame Blast as an Alternate Power of her Fire Control; change Strike (Aura) to an Energy Aura as described in Ultimate Power (doubling its cost), and add Selective as a power feat of that Energy Aura.

"What?" said Beatrice Smart, sitting beside her.

"Bea, you do realize that this is a highly illegal fighting tournament, right? How did you even get our tickets?"

"Guy who goes to the same dojo as I do was in the preliminaries. He didn't make it to the first round, but they gave him tickets to the show as a consolation prize, I guess."

"So why didn't he --"

"He's not getting out of the hospital for a few weeks."

"Riiight. So, you do realize what's going to go on here, then. Why are we attending this thing?"

Beatrice looked bewilderingly uncomfortable as Tanya stared at her. "Well ... y'know," she said at length, "I do karate, and you do that capoeira ... and I had the tickets, and I didn't want them to go to waste ... and I figured it might be kinda interesting, in a sick way ... and you're into fights, right?"

"You're weird, Bea." Tanya shook her head. "Fun, but weird. I'm gonna go see if the concession area's a little less crazy than it was when we came in. Back in a bit."

"Sure," Beatrice said, still grinning. As soon as Tanya was out of earshot, she turned to the person sitting beside her and announced, "I'm fun!"

"Of course you are," he replied absently, working his PDA.

Taking a deep breath to clear her head of its momentary bemusement, Beatrice looked down towards the arena floor. Of course, the fighters wouldn't actually be fighing there; the actual fights would be held somewhere else, but visually transmitted as holographic images, and the sounds would be reproduced as well. (She wondered if those up close would be treated to the smells of the clash, but decided that was too gross to think about.)

Right now, all that the holograms were showing were giant schedules of the tournament. Looking at it, Beatrice could almost understand where Tanya had been coming from, earlier. After all, they were both "friends of justice", as the Japanese might put it, and the list of fighters was almost entirely composed of vicious supervillains. One of them, Superior, was even wanted for crimes against humanity.

And the handful of superheroes listed were all questionable characters. Amazon had started out as a villain, back in the Golden Age (and wasn't she supposed to be dead?) while Kris was a vigilante wanted for questioning about some serious assaults, and the Lady of the Lantern was reputed to have ties to the Triads. This wasn't really any place for law-abiding citizens to be ...

But Beatrice rejected that thought. Damn it, this was their night off! And who knew but that some of the villains down there would turn out to be heroes in disguise? That sort of thing happened all the time! No, she was determined to enjoy this, no matter how much her conscience nagged at her.

Just then, the lights began to dim. "Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats," a female voice announced from nowhere and everywhere. "The Gathering will commence very shortly."

A few moments later, Tanya darted up the stairs and across to her seat. "So much for that idea," she grumbled. "I didn't even --"

The theatre was abruptly plunged into complete darkness. After a brief silent interval, John Williams' Imperial March began to play, and a glaring spotlight illuminated a silvery haired man in a white toga -- complete with a purple sash -- standing in a box at the head of the arena's floor. Speaking with sweeping gestures, he proclaimed, "As Master of these Ceremonies, I, August Roman, declare the Gathering ... begun!"

As the box lifted into the air, surrounded by a force field bubble and rising until it was above the uppermost row of the seats, Tanya finally found her voice. "August Roman? But I thought he was dead!"

Neither of them heard the guy sitting beside Beatrice mutter a heart-felt, "Oh, please."

The holographic schedule flashed, then focused in on the listing for the first match. Then it faded away completely, revealing the sight of the two fighters ...

Warrior woman of a lost realm, this female paragon, formerly of the Pantheon, was thought dead after that team's firey finale. Clearly, she got better!

Concrete Angel
One of the most feared gladiators of the Circuits Maximus, this "living weapon" has been known to eviscerate her oppponets ... without ever losing her poker face!

Odds: Heavily favoring a win by the Concrete Angel. Unless this really is Amazon, with all the benefits of sixty-odd years of fighting, she's just not in the Angel's weight class -- and even then, she doesn't approach her versatility. Still, don't rule her out just yet!

In this series, the distinction between a Player Character and a Non-Player Character is irrelevant, as there's only one player -- me! It doesn't make sense to say that some characters have Hero Points, while others rely on GM fiat. Therefore, all characters use the "Standard Hero Point" variant from the Mastermind's Manual, starting with a set number of Hero Points equal to half their power level, rounded up, plus any from the Luck feat.

The Gathering: Amazon vs. Concrete Angel

Amazon: Attack +14, Grapple +26, Damage +8 (unarmed) or +5 (shield blast), Defense +8, Toughness +12 (+6 vs. lethal), Impervious 0, Knockback -6 (-3 vs. lethal), Initiative +12, Hero Points 6.

Concrete Angel: Attack +14, Grapple +20, Damage +10 (strike), Defense +15, Toughness +9 (+7 flat-footed), Impervious 6, Knockback -7 (-6 flat-footed), Initiative +12, Hero Points 11.
For a moment they stared at each other across the arena, the red-haired, woad-painted warrior woman with the crystal shield, and the empty-handed girl in what looked like a school uniform, complete with a plaid skirt. There was no signal to indicate that they should begin, and yet they moved in nearly the exact same instant.

The Concrete Angel closed and directed a pair of lightning strike jabs with her fists, probing her foes defenses before performing a full circle spin kick. Every blow connected, but with Amazon's shield, not her body. As she defended herself, Amazon's keen grey eyes were searching for holes in her opponent's defenses.

What she saw there disturbed her.

With a keening wail, Amazon sommersaulted backward, drawing the Concrete Angel to pursue her, and then twisted at the last possible second to drive the heel of her boot towards her opponent's ungarded stomach. It connected, eliciting a pained grunt from the young gladiator and pushing her back perhaps half a pace. But that didn't seem to even slow her down more than a single breath, and the Angel's own blow, striking low towards Amazon's offside hit, seemed to have hit harder.

As Amazon struggled through the pain, the Concrete Angel repaid her for the blow to her abdomen with a similar heel slam. The Avalonian rolled with it, however. The next few moments were filled with punches that never quite connected, blocks that threw them just a little off-side, and ultimately the sounds of booing from the audience -- transmitted to the arena, even as the sights and sounds of the fight were transmitted to them. They'd paid to see supers doing violence to one another, not to watch them avoid doing so, and wanted to get their money's worth.

Teeth barred, a snarl slipping between them, Amazon decided to give them what they wanted. She launched up in a powerful jump kick that couldn't possibly be dodged, much less blocked, but which left her wide open to the Concrete Angel's more measured counterattack. They were both hurt, but only Amazon was knocked off her feet and to the floor.

And with that, the Angel apparently made up her mind to finish it. Eschewing her previous caution, she began the stomping, driving several powerful, gravity-propelled blows towards her foe, leaving herself open to an attack ... that was never going to come.

Amazon ... no, in the fading moments of her consciousness, Babd Catha of Ave-Alon no longer thought of herself by the name that the World of the Patriarchs had given to her distant cousin, and she tried desperately to roll out of the way of the stomps. But the last thing she saw, as darkness descended, was the foot coming towards her, and the empty, pitiless expression on the face behind it.

As soon as she was certain that her opponent was down for the count, the Concrete Angel stepped back and lifted her head to look at the gigantic hologram of August Roman which had materialized at the far end of the arena. It wasn't at all difficult for her to conceal her disdain for the grandiose gesture, but for a mad moment she almost wished she didn't have to do so.

But she was saving her wishes for something else.

With an expression of great magnanimity, Roman held out a fist clenched around his thumb. Amazon would live to fight another day. As Trouble watched her fallen opponent be carried away by servodrones, she spoke her first words in more than a day: "You fought well."

It was a meaningless gesture, but what wasn't?
