Background:
Eamon Vigil LaCroix wasn’t your typical child. Where his older brother was loud, boisterous, and a little bit of a thug, Eamon was quiet, withdrawn, and a bookworm. His older brother’s actions were overlooked both by his parents, and by the authorities due to the family’s noble status. Eamon just put his head down and did his best to ignore his brother. To that end he left for university at a very young age.
Over the next several years Eamon made excellent marks at University earning the praise of his professors while all the while barely getting acknowledgement from his own family. Depressed he often spent his free time just exploring the city, and that was where he discovered his passion.
He found a place called Smoke Powder Alley, where the craft of firearms ran an entire neighborhood. The entire place smelled of matchlock pistols and ignited gun powder. Eamon fell in love with the place and a diminutive old man allowed the student to practice firing a pistol behind his shop.
The next two years of Eamon’s life followed a pattern. During the week he’d work hard at University, quickly gaining a reputation as a promising young historian. During the weekends he’d go back to Smoke Powder Alley, stay with that old man, and practice his skill with firearms.
This comfortable lifestyle was eventually interrupted by fate when the Dean of Arcane Studies asked Eamon to take part in a expedition to the South in Mordent in order to find an artifact of great magical, and historical significance.
The expedition got underway. Several people were enlisted to go and among them was a foreign rustic dressed oddly who was to serve as a wilderness guide. Arriving in Mordent the expedition picked up another member, short, slender, and angry young woman who claimed to be an Elf, her name was Natheme.
Eventually the expedition reached it’s destination and stumbled onto an old crypt. They delved inside only to be blinded by a bright light. When they emerged from the light they were outside the crypt again, and the only ones there were Eamon, Natheme, and the guide, Connor ApTrease. Eamon realized he was holding a book.
The book was some manner of religious text speaking about the faith of Ezra. The Goddess worshipped all over the Western side of the land. It was a widely practiced religion and his ancient text hinted that the Goddess may have actually been a real live person.
As Eamon examined the tome several groups mercilessly attacked the trio. Priestesses of Ezra, members of a Dueling society masquerading as bandits, strange fey creatures, and even a knife wielding vampire.
Eventually Eamon discovered that the book was really a series of Prophecies leading the reader to discover those who were descended from the goddess Ezra, as well as the Sentinel, who would protect them until they could fulfil their destiny. Several people were interested in this knowledge. Including the Orthodox Church of Ezra, who felt as though their authority could be threatened. As well as a mysterious man known as the Mist Prophet who sought to use the information in the book to find the Blood of Ezra and exploit their abilities in order to destroy the land of the mists.
Eamon, Natheme, and Connor spent the next two years on the run together. During this time Eamon came into his own, and using knowledge inspired by the book crafted a unique firearm that he called the Vigil ’59. He also came to love Natheme. The two were married over the objections of Eamon’s family who revealed that he was adopted and that Vigil was his real family name.
The joy was short lived as the Church of Ezra branded Eamon and his friends as heretics, thus making them wanted in most of the civilized lands of the core. The Mist Prophet, meanwhile, enlisted a dark knight named Rodjan Dilisnya, who himself had the blood of Ezra in his veins. Rodjan and his skilled mercenaries hounded Eamon and his friends relentlessly as they tracked the clues in the tome.
During these travels Eamon discovered that he was the Sentinel spoken of in the book, and that it was his destiny to protect the so-called Children of Ezra from the Mist Prophet’s schemes. Armed with this knowledge he began to seek out the children by using the tome. He met his first success in the distant land of Nidala where he protect the infant Kateri Wolfe from the local religious fanatics. He also tasted defeat. He failed to stop the Mist Prophet from securing the aid of dark Fey creatures, and from slaughtering a teenaged child of Ezra named Robin Stillwater. The boy’s body was eventually desecrated by the Mist Prophet to create a powerful magical weapon for Rodjan.
The death of the innocent Robin Stillwater enraged Eamon. He finally decided to take the fight to the Mist Prophet. He melted down weapons enchanted to slay fey creatures and turned them to bullets for his gun. Natheme and Connor prepared in their own ways as well.
They launched an attack on the Mist Prophet’s dark cathedral. There they fought off hordes of fey creatures, undead, and the last of Rodjan’s minions. Finally Rodjan and Eamon faced off in single combat. Their clashing combat styled made of an interesting fight, and more than once Eamon was only saved by his quick wit. Through sheer force of will Eamon managed to defeat, but not kill, Rodjan. The Dark Knight saluted him with respect and left the field of battle with the remainder of his troops.
With his muscle gone the Mist Prophet was forced to reveal himself, an undead monstrosity who was slain by the Church of Ezra when he discovered the truth of the Children of Ezra. He appealed to the companions, saying that he understood the burden of knowledge, and that he alone could point them in the right direction to fulfill their destinies. The three stood up together and fought off the Mist Prophet, managing to destroy him and bringing down the dark cathedral around the damned man’s ear’s.
Eamon and Natheme retired to a small print shop in Mordentshire where they started their lives together. For the past fifteen years they’ve made a comfortable living reprinting the famous VanRichten Guides. The extra money allowed them to start a real family. Unbeknownst to Eamon now that he has a child it is that young girl who is now the sentinel and has inherited Eamon’s charge.

Phew! Long background. Eamon was one of the PCs of a Ravenloft game that I’d spent ages planning (literally a decade before I even heard of the Da Vinci Code, I swear). It never reached this heart pounding ending I’m afraid, but this was the direction I wanted it to go. Eamon was a fun character in so much as he grew as time went on. He started as a nervous bookworm and slowly became a hardened adventurer.
