Xeno

Xeno says nothing, but simply warps the air around himself, shifting him into the air lock.

Once in the airlock, he begins to warp the air around him, watching the mechanicals, and waiting for the robots to make the first move.

Battle At the Changeheart! Round 1

Postby samca » Wed May 21, 2008 3:24 pm

"Roger that Cavanaugh. It won't mean anything to me, but try to figure out what kinds of military aircraft are on the way. If Mannequin can make back aboard, he'll want to know." Journey said, his voice steady. He called over his shoulder to the others "You heard the man, we have incoming. Move to the airlocks and get ready to spit fire. You can stay with the jet or take off on your own as you see fit. I'm going to give these hijacked planes something to think about."

He then radioed the others "Ground Team, this is Journey. We have a huge number of aircraft coming in from all over the area. If Mannequin can get back here I won't complain. If not, I'll do my best. Journey out."

Now where are the weapons controls again... Ah there we go. Alright, I can do this. Oh the force fields! They are... where... there.

Journey flips a switch, and the Glaive's airlock whirs open. The worst of the slipstream around the plane is kept from tearing at those inside by the shimmering force field surrounding the plane.

With a sputtering roar, the rocket pack on Doombot's back spits fire and propels the robot out into the air. He swivels his metal face to survey the mass of oncoming aerial attackers. Closest are two fighter jets, both Soviet-era MIGs with silver nanotechnological growths filling their otherwise empty cockpits and giving the jets an oddly insectile appearance.

Doombot aims his Doom Blaster at one of the oncoming jets and fires. At the last moment, the jet tips to the side and veers off into an evasive maneuver, and the crackling energy blast shears through the empty air it occupied a second earlier.

The jet rights itself again, and fires an air-to-air missile from below its wing. The missile tracks in on its target, and slams full force into Doombot with a thunderous explosion. After the flame and smoke clears, the metal man hovers, unharmed and unpurturbed, his personal force field glowing brightly.

The other MIG looses an identical missile, this one streaking toward the Glaive. This one strikes too, but the plane swoops through the explosion, smoke and flame trailing behind it. The space plane's force field held, too.

Coming in close behind the jets is a military helicopter gunship, bristling with huge machine gun placements and heavily modified by the extradimensional technology. Camera-eyes track the Glaive, and it opens up on the plane with a chaingun. The sound is deafening, but the stream of bullets ricochets off the Glaive, leaving it unhurt once again.

A second military helicopter is closing in from the other direction. This one takes aim, mechanical intelligence calculating angles and vectors, and fires a rocket at Mannequin's plane. Journey manages to pull up in time, and the rocket streaks off into the clouds, passing less than a foot below the craft.

Journey takes aim at one of the jets, and lets loose with the Glaive's energy weapons. Once again, the jet evades the blast.

There's barely a moment's breathing room, and then several smaller choppers barrel straight toward the Glaive, en masse. These look like they may have once been civilian helicopters -- one has a faded red cross slowly being obscured by nanites; another has the callsign of a TV station. The third is unmarked. Civilian vehicles, these have no armaments, and so they simply throw themselves toward the Glaive in a kamikaze attack.

Journey makes a turn that presses him back against his seat, and pushes Xeno against the wall of the airlock, and they shoot past the first helicopter untouched. The second strikes a glancing blow at the side of their wing, and the impact on the force field shakes the entire plane, but both the Glaive and the helicopter continue on without any significant damage. Then the last chopper hits, and slams its rotors head-on into the Glaive's fuselage. The force field takes most of the impact, but the rotor blade tears a chunk out of the plane. It also tears free from the chopper, which immediately plummets out of the sky.

After the plane stops shaking, Xeno grabs the edge of the airlock and leans out of the plane. The air warps around him, and a ripple moves through space toward one of the fighter jets. This time, it doesn't evade, and the metal of the plane shifts and warps. The plane isn't destroyed, but several cracks have formed in its structure, and there's smoke pouring out of one of them.

Then another explosion rocks the Glaive, as a third jet descends out of the clouds above them and fires another missile. The force field holds again.

In the distance, a huge shape is moving through the air toward them, slower than the smaller aircraft. Once, it was a commercial passenger airliner, but it's been heavily changed. Now long, thin arms with claws sprout from the base of its wings, and the front of the jumbo-jet is mounted with strange projections and devices. Some of them look quite a bit like weapons. It will take the beast a bit more time to get here...

---

Below, Red Dawn sets back down on the ground at the base of the Changeheart, letting Path down off her back. Then, yelling the name of a martial arts move, she shreiks into action, streaking around in a flying blur, slamming fists down onto every mechanized car and truck within 30 feet of her. A pickup truck's engine block is shattered. A cherry-red sports car mounted with blades and claws *shatters*. A small white compact car has its hood torn free, exposing the engine and a host of new, enigmatic biomachinery. And a small cargo truck simply sputters and dies after Red Dawn's super human fist slams through its mechanical innards.

Path, meanwhile, raises an arm and fires his wrist-cannon at another car, a tan sedan sprouting camera-eyes and what look rather like glowing mandibles. It isn't destroyed by the shot, but a panel is cracked, its new robotic limbs waving in apparent consternation.

Then the remaining cars and trucks, seven of them, hurtle in with roaring engines, peeling rubber around the smoking bodies of their fellows. Red Dawn and Path suddenly find themselves on the defensive, dodging tearing claws, blades that whir through the air at them, metallic spears, what appears to be a city bus that has sprouted mechanical tentacles... After several seconds, none of the automatons have managed to touch them.

Yet.

---

Inside the Changeheart, Mannequin fires his ion rifle at the nearest mechanoid tendril, and shears it free of the wall. It falls, twitching to the ground, and dies.

Two more sprout from the wall behind it, as the seething nanotechnology of the structure reconfigures itself into new weapons to attack. They slash down at Mannequin, who manages to dodge back out of the way, away from the wall.

Around him, the whole inner structure is rippling, beginning to bulge with new shapes and forms, as the defensive systems engage...

Journey

"This is bloody insane! I don't think helicopters can't fly as high as the jets. So UP WE GO!!!"

Journey pulled back on the stick and set the throttle to full. He shot up at a speed that would make a Rocket turn green with envy. Pulling the plane into a punishing high-G loop, Journey circles around to pounce on the nearest target.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

"How did I know that was going to happen???" Mannequin said to himself.
"Alright..The direct approach is a big negatory. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this but...No guts no glory!" he finished and ran at the wall and dove headlong into it.

Dawn talked to pPath as she was smashing the robots.

"Hey Path" (Smashes her fist through a car hood) "Maybe" (rips the engine out) "we ought to" (smashes the engine parrying away another car) Get "inside."

Xeno uses his powers again, this time aiming towards the converted jumbo-jet, attempting to blast it apart with a long-ranged spatial attack.

With mechanical precision, Doombot reorients himself and points his blaster at the closest fighter jet. Another brilliant beam of energy streams from the gun, and burns a hole straight through the MIG. It keeps on flying, but smoke and flames pour out of both the top and bottom of the jet.

With what sounds very much like an electronic scream, the jet circles around to come back at Doombot, and fires another of its air-to-air missiles. The shot goes wide, and the missile flies harmlessly past Doombot, who watches with expressionless robotic interest.

The second jet lets loose another missile, this time at the Glaive. Once again, the shot strikes home. An explosion rocks the Glaive, the force field gleaming, and in the cockpit warning lights begin to flash insistently. The plane is holding, but it's sustaining mounting damage...

The helicopter gunship fires another volley of ammunition at the same moment, but as the Glaive is knocked sideways by the explosion, the hail of bullets passes through the place the plane was a moment before, tearing trails in the cloud of smoke.

One of the unarmed helicopters tries to take another kamikaze run at the jet, while the other army copter fires a rocket propelled grenade at the jet, both only narrowly missing.

Deciding that's enough of dogfighting, Journey pulls back hard on the throttle, and the Glaive arcs upward. Fast. In mere seconds he's miles away from the chaos below, the Glaive entering the stratosphere, the air very thin here, this close to the void of space.

In the far distance, the last jet has turned upward to follow them. It's still a small point in the distance behind them -- even the jets are no match for the Glaive's speed -- but it's close enough to be worth taking a shot at, just for the hell of it. As expected, the Glaive's energy blast goes wide of the target.

Meanwhile, back in the midst of battle, the second civilian helicopter, the one with news-station callsigns, slams into Doombot at top speed. Even through the force field, the impact is jarring, and he can feel some of his internal wiring knocked loose.

Xeno, still hanging out of the airlock, takes a brief moment to enjoy being this close to the vacuum of space. He had intended to disrupt the space around the passenger jet-turned-killer robot, but the Glaive's steep ascent has left it miles outside of even his range. He settles for the fighter jet that has followed behind them, reaching out with the force of will and warping the fabric of the space the jet occupies.

The jet crumples like paper, and then explodes, sending debris falling back to Earth, and leaving the Glaive alone in the stratosphere, for the moment.

---

At the base of the Changeheart, a half dozen still functioning cars, trucks and automobiles peel rubber toward Red Dawn and Path, their newly formed metallic claws and tendrils straining to tear the superheroes apart.

Then, in a blink, the heroes are gone.

The cars slow down to an idle, steel appendages dropping as they face the empty spot on the ground where they were a moment before.

Inside the Changeheart, they have a moment to take in their surroundings. The pulsing red light. The huge, vaulted chamber criss-crossed with wires and silvery tubes. The immense, translucent metal eggshell suspended at the center of the tower, the vague indistinct shape of an immense, partially formed being almost visible inside it. And Mannequin being menaced by two bladed, metal tentacles which have grown from a wall that seethes with flowing liquid metal nanotechnology, as does the floor around them, which is forming a second, larger, but still indistinct form.

They spring into action immediately. Shouting, "Charging Tiger Thins the Herd!" Dawn blurs at the tentacles; an expert kick tears one free of the wall, while a chop of her hand simultaneously sends the other skittering across the floor.

In the other direction, Path pulls the pin out of one of his grenades, and then blinks it across the chamber, to where the still-uncertain shape is forming out of a the nanotech cluster of the tower's central machinery. The grenade explodes. Liquid metal splashes, and the Changeheart's secondary defense mechanism is destroyed before it could fully form. Machinery is left burst and melted, with more silvery fluids running down the wreckage. And a single, hairline crack has formed in the translucent eggshell at the center of the building...

Seeing his opportunity, while no new machines have formed to attack them, Mannequin steps up to the red-pulsing biocircuitry of the walls, and then steps *into* it, his body disintegrating into information, spreading out to inhabit the Changeheart itself.

For a moment, the machinery resists him, fighting him as it would a viral infection. And then he *is* the Changeheart. He can feel the tower, still converting matter from the ground around them and growing. He can feel the Base Commander, still coming to term inside its gestation sac, waiting to be born and take mental command of every human being in the conversion zone. And he can feel the screaming warning alarms inside its computerized brain: There are intruders in the central structure! There are attackers in the sky above! The Base Commander's Egg is breached!

And with a start, Mannequin realizes he has actually managed to take control. He can actually shut down all of the defensive measures. For as long as he can maintain his control of the system, Mannequin has become the Changeheart.

In the skies above, all of the planes and helicopters instantly stop attacking.

"Mannequin you OK in there, would like to know before I break more stuff. Would really hate to hack off a limb or something" Stopping to think about the dozens of options he is looking at he asks "If your in control of anything see if you can find out if this thing is connected to the rest of the Infinite Empire. If we can find some way to hack into there network even once we shut this thing down it could help us gain valuable information about incoming attacks."
Whispering to himself Path says "I wish I would have had you guys at the Hero's last stand"

"Good shooting Xeno! I don't know what the team on the ground did, but I'm going to take out that jumbo jet in case it doesn't last. I'll try to make sure you get a shot on the way by. Hold on!"

With that Journey points the Glaive towards the Jumbo Jet and goes back to full throttle. He fires the blasters at full power and then passes just over top of the target at hyper-sonic speeds.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Doombot waves down the Glaive for a ride. Once inside he says, "I'll take a look at the damage and see if there's anything I can do. Every set of blasters we can shoot means less destructions for our side and more for theirs."

The Glaive's blasters tear a hole in the fuselage of the jumbo jet, which shudders under the assault but stays in the air, its huge manipulator-tentacles slack. It keeps flying in a straight line, near the small cluster of now-motionless, hovering helicopters, and keeps right on going in the opposite direction.

Once Doombot has been let onto the Glaive, he quickly goes to work, patching the tear the first kamikaze helicopter left in the hull and doing some quick rewiring to keep everything working as it should.

Mannequin took a moment to get his bearings. It was slightly disorienting occupying a new object for the first time but this was something else altogether!
Reaching out with his mind he ordered every nanodrone to not only stop but reverse what they were doing. He then "searched" the parameters of the Changeheart, not only trying to glean information on what it was capable of but exactly what or who was responsible for sending it to this Earth.

From his position inside the wires and nerves of the Changeheart, Mannequin is able to reach out and command the nanites to begin reversing their work on the people of the surrounding country. Searching its operating parameters, he sees that they caught it in the earliest phase of its life-cycle. Soon, the Base Commander will hatch -- every living thing and machine within thousands of miles becoming a slave to the newborn Commander's will.

That begins the second phase, in which the local infrastructure is converted into an industrial base, producing war drones, weaponry, raw materials for the war effort.

In the third and final phase, the mature War Colony reproduces, showering new Warspores over the planet, until every square inch of the Earth is converted. Then the transdimensional gates are constructed, and the spores drop onto a new Earth, to begin the process anew.

All of this in service to the Infinite Empire's expansion across the multiverse. In the ancestral memory of the nanocolony, Mannequin sees that the Infinite Empire is an powerful, expansionist dictatorship from an Earth centuries more advanced than their own. The Empire is sustained by periodic bursts of conquest. Every few decades, they enter a period of war against parallel universes. Each of these wars -- the memory-banks inform him that the correct terminology for a war between realities is a "crisis" -- brings thousands of new Earths into the domain of the Empire. Nearly all of them become Factory Worlds, colonized by Warspore; a select few are chosen to become new Paradise Worlds, pleasure capitals for the Empire's wealthy upper echelons. The first Crisis undertaken by the Empire was nearly 300 years ago; there have been 17 others since then.

This invasion is the Warspore spearhead of Crisis 19, the newest and largest expansion of Empire territory in a decade.

And Mannequin can feel something else, too. The Base Commander is close to hatching, and when that happens, the Changeheart will no longer be in charge of the drones and the machinery around them. All the control Mannequin currently wields will shift, immediately and automatically, to the newborn creature.

---

With the Changeheart no longer transmitting to the aircraft, the Glaive is able to make quick work of them, blowing them out of the sky in a shower of flames and twisted scrap metal. Soon, the plane is alone in the air once again.
