-Oh, Hobgoblin. The A-List Spider-Man villain that never was. Let this character be a lesson, kids; never set up a massive "Who is he?" storyline with a character that lasts for years. Because if you suddenly leave the title, the mystery ends up solved by commitee. Poor Hobgoblin had a couple YEARS of build-up leading to his big revelation, when they casually were forced to reveal that Ned Leeds (who WAS DEAD at this time, I must mention) was the villain all along. Yup, a dead man was revealed as the villain, everyone went 'oh well', and then they had to make a new character out of the ether (Jason Macendale) to replace him, becoming a C-level Spider-Man villain. YEARS later, however, in recent times, Roderick Kingsley, one of the initial 'usual suspects', was revealed as the mastermind behind the whole thing after all, admitting the whole Ned Leeds thing was a facade. But really, twenty years later, the damage was done, and we now had the ORIGINAL Goblin back anyways, so what was the point? A character lost for the ages.
-Hobgoblin (Cripes that's a hard word to spell when typing) stats up much like a lesser Norman Osborn. Skills leading to manipulation more than scientific genius, the same powers, but slightly less accurate, and far fewer Feats. But he's still a balanced PL 10 madman with tons of abilities and dangerous powers.

-Shriek is a minor Spidey villain from the 90s, used primarily in the "Maximum Carnage" crossover, acting as a sick 'mother' to Carnage's messed-up family of misfits. She 'killed' Dagger right out of the gate, and proceeded to emtionally manipulate half of New York into rioting, before ultimately being brought down by a returned Dagger. Her whole schtick was a former drug addict turned psychopath, with a sonic blast & emo-powers. She of course went the way of nearly every other 90s-created Marvel villain, and popped into comics limbo.
-Shriek is a dangerous Blaster, doing slightly more damage than she has accuracy, along with an Emotion Control power she can use in a miles-wide radius. Most super-heroes would be unaffected (it's only +5), but for civilians, it's pretty dangerous. She's an excellent team player, especially in Carnage's squad, being the long-range power and sick manipulator of half the team.

-Morbius was created to do nothing but tempt the Comics Code. See, back then, you couldn't do vampires/occult stuff, so Stan Lee gave the order to skirt the line of censorship as tightly as possible, with a vampire created from SCIENCE (yet another brilliant scientist in an accident, Morbius caught a disease and tried to heal it with vampire bats) instead of magic or biting. The success of Morbius allowed Marvel to break the Code barriers fully with stuff like Count Dracula and Werewolf By Night (for those curious as to why the 1970s seemed chock-full of weird supernatural characters in solo books, that's why. It was the first time in thirty years they could do it :)). Morbius was ridiculously 70s however, having the classic Iron Fist giant open shirt v-neck, and altogether looks HILARIOUSLY ridiculous today, but he was pretty popular in his day. He had a comeback in that horrid Midnight Sons era of Marvel, where all their mystic guys were given quick-to-fail comic series (remember the Darkhold Redeemers? Or the Night Stalkers? *shudder*...).
-Best Morbius story is when he showed up in the 1990s Spider-Man animated series. Under the same rules as 1970s Marvel, he couldn't suck blood or bite people. Their solution? Have him SUCK PLASMA through wheird little suction cups in his hands? This sated the censors, even though that was TOTALLY DISGUSTING and a thousand times more nightmare-inducing that just biting people.
-Another good one is Todd MacFarlane's run on "Spider-Man" in the 90s, which featured Morbius as a cloak-wearing inhabitant of New York, living around a bunch of crazy bums who did his bidding and were also afraid of him. If that sounds familiar, it's because he used the exact same concept in Spawn.
-Morbius stats up slightly over-costed, since he's got a myriad of powers (Hypnosis costing quite a bit), but it's tough to make him PL 10 without overdoing him, since he was roughly as strong as Spidey, but wasn't a godly combatant or anything. He's more 9.5 offensive, 9.0 defensive. There are only four instances of him actually turning people into vampires, as that's not a usual power for him, so it seems to be more of a writer error than anything, so will go unstatted.

-Figured I'd stat some of the supporting cast. MJ was brought into the Spider-Man books after a long-running gag of Peter being afraid to meet what was surely Aunt May's friend's ugly neice. What he got, everybody knows. Originally a ditzy, brain-dead party-girl, MJ was portrayed as a total loon, and by far the worst offender of what Stan Lee thought 1960s teenagers talked like (Petey only called people "pussycat" 100 times an issue, MJ was EVEN WORSE). Though still not as bad as most of what DC was doing with teen characters. Eventually, they decided to have her partying ways a result of a crappy home life, and turned her into the best supporting character in comics, finally marrying Peter after years of them trying to make his bachelor ways a big, fun mess constantly. Marvel would of course try to break them up several times after this, as soon as certain people couldn't think of any more stories to write about a married man (ignore the fact that nearly every show on TV has married couples on it). We'll see if this last one takes.
-Obviously MJ is no combatant, nor are most of the supporting cast. She's got a lot of little talents, though nobody would mistake her for a great actress (most of the 90s were spent with her on a Melrose Place-inspired soap), she IS extremely hot, and that makes dancing and modelling one heck of a lot easier.

-Robbie Robertson was added to the Spidey cast for a bit of racial equality (it was the 70s, which was also the decade that gave us the black kid on Charlie Brown, and Chuck 'n' Nancy from Archie Comics). He was the yin to Jonah's yang, a smart, wise old leader who was a bit more street-smart and knoweldgeable, as well as not being a giant hard-ass. It's been implied from time to time that he suspects Peter's been Spidey all along. I'd say he's my favorite of the supporting cast overall.
-Less capable at an older age than MJ (if only because he's slower), he's got a ton of skills, most benefitting his job as a newsman.

-J. Jonah Jameson's a classic, and one of the most famous supporting characters for a reason. Totally crazy and insane, he still has good reasons for hating Spider-Man (well, not so much good as understandable)- he views himself as a weaker man than Spidey, and thus resents him and feels he has to tear him down. Plus he thinks Spidey cock-blocked his son from fame during his second adventure.
-Jonah's the same PL as Robbie, but only because of his berserk rages.

Abilities: 19 / Skills: 24--6 / Feats: 4 / Powers: 0 / Saves: 5 /Combat: 16 (50)

-Flash has had a weird run in Spidey books. Initially a blowhard jock full of bravado, he pulled a classic Steve Ditko twist and started growing slowly less brash, until Romita & Lee fully fleshed him out as the son of an alcoholic, and a generally good kid with some bad habits. He even made up with Peter to the point of being best man at his wedding, and got his own story arc as a recovering drunk himself. Of course, recent years served to try to reinvent him as a nemesis again. The character has an unfortunate amount of baggage attached to him now (having dated Felicia Hardy, MJ AND Betty Brant over the years), but he's still one of the genuinely great things about Spider-Man comics, a bad guy who turned out to be decent after all.
-Flash is stronger and tougher than most of the other Spidey supporting people, being a big, tough jock who's also an ex-soldier. He's no match for any Spidey villains, or Peter himself as Spidey, but he could knock around someone like J.J. pretty easily.

-Silver Sable's a weird fit in the Spideyverse, an elite mercenary doing it to keep her tiny European home country above the poverty line, frequently using or abusing Spider-Man in her missions. This eventually led to a solo series in the 1990s, back when EVERYONE in Marvel had at least one regular series, and it lasted an absurd 35 issues before going the way of Darkhawk & Sleepwalker, since the comics boom of the 90s meant that they could sell a comic based off of turd for years on end and people would buy 100,000 copies of it. The failure of her solo/Wild Pack series and recent failures to push her has meant Marvel's pushed her back into the Comics Limbo non-entity form she usually inhabits, and we'll see if Spidey uses her again. She pops up in "New Continuity" Spider-Man stuff more frequently than the real Spidey comics (having outgrown him in a way) these days- see the various Spidey toons (she'll probably show up in the new one before long) and Ultimate Spider-Man.
-She's just a good human-level fighter, so she's only PL 9, but she's got tons of stats, Equipment, and the Benefit Feat gives her tons of stuff to draw back on, from her own countrymen to elite vehicles and mercenaries.

-The Puma's yet ANOTHER animal-powered guy in the Spideyverse, though he's a bit more level-headed and intellectual than the others. His whole gimmick is that he's a rich, intelligent Native American businessman who nonetheless is also a mercenary who can turn into a giant kitty. Yeah. So of course he fights Spider-Man until he finds out that Spidey has honour, and then kicks around as an occasional ally/enemy depending on the story. He's pretty minor, so he doesn't get used much, in spite of his power.
-Puma's dangerous. A fully balanced PL 10, he's accurate, strong, tough, and can modify most of his attacks using various Feats. Plus he's still remarkably tough when he's not in Puma-form.

-Tombstone in the comics is a relatively minor character, given a personal childhood vendetta with Joe Robertson of the Bugle to make the story more interesting. Her serves well as a minor Spidey villain over the years, as this one little hook is enough to keep him around. He even got a few stories BEFORE he gained his super-powers (he's an albino thug), that revelation turned him into more of a physical threat for Spidey, but also kind of made him more generic (I mean, how many guys does Spidey FIGHT with 'just enough' super-strength to hang with him?). Curiously enough, Tombstone's been given a far greater role in BOTH of the major Spidey TV series of the past 15 years, being a recurring name in both shows, the more recent one implying that he may be one of the true Big Bads of the run.
-Tombstone stats out as a balanced PL 9; he's harder to hurt than normal, and he's remarkably tough, but lacks the real 'oomph' of major non-strength related super-powers.

-Part of the whole "Venom Saga" of 1990s Marvel, Carnage came about because Marvel refused to let David Michelinie & Mark Bagley use their storyline of "Eddie Brock dies and a new host takes over Venom". Creating a new 'spawned' symbiote instead, they made Carnage up as an uber-90s villain; a homicidal mass murderer with all Venom's powers, PLUS some more. Though defeated often during those years, he did get a big push in "Maximum Carnage", possibly the most needlessly-long storyline in Marvel's history (and that's saying something), where he spent FOURTEEN ISSUES running around killing people before Spidey & Venom finally stomped him. Over the years, he's been casually killed and brought back by various silly means as writers couldn't be bothered to keep track of what happened to him (Silver Surfer turned him into a statue once, but he was fine months later), and as of now, he's currently floating around in space thanks to the Sentry, though they'll likely write that one out as well.
-Carnage is a beast, plain and simple. He does ridiculous damage at a DISTANCE, unlike Spidey & Venom, in addition to all their powers, plus the options of Autofire, Penetrating and Improved Critical in the mix. He's a bit more one-note than they are, lacking most Skills, Intelligence, etc., and has a much weaker human form (which comes into play now and then), but he's one of Spidey's most uber-villains for a reason.

-Alistair Smythe was the son of VERY early Spider-Man villain, Spencer Smythe, the creator of the Spider-Slayers. Taking over after his father's death, Alistair created a bunch more, then built himself a carapace, turning himself into a minor Spider-Man physical threat. Alistair is a rare example of someone (like Tombstone) given a FAR greater role in a cartoon, however. His "Spider-Man: TAS" 1990s run as a major ally of the Kingpin for years meant he showed up in like thirty episodes, more than Venom, Doc Ock, Hobgoblin, etc. Though that run degenerated into him wearing the same goofy get-up as he eventually did in the comics (except this time that was a mutation and not a robo-suit), turning him into another generic goon. He's reappeared in the comics as having the ability to walk again, but he's still a minor name in the Spidey legion of villains, so he'll probably never get a push like the cartoon gave him again.
-Fairly generic stuff, a scientific genius with a robo-harness thrown on, making him a well-balanced PL 9. Spidey's not crapping his pants, but he's not taking a nap over him either. He shares the low Will Save of most Spidey villains, but is a little harder to hurt.

Jabroniville, this Carnage built is great, but:

"Living Costume Blades" Strike 2 (Feats: Mighty, Improved Critical 3, Extended Reach 5) (Extras: Penetrating 11) [35]

Penetrating 11 ? really ?

As for"Maximum Carnage"

Here is some comments about that storyline and especially how STUPID traditional superhero moral codes are.

I most definately don't agree with this person, their arguments or what I suspect is your agreement with them.

Superheroes have to follow the strictest of moral codes. They don't kill, they don't use their powers to overthrow established governments, they try to act within the law as best they can, because otherwise they would be no different from the villains they oppose.

It's kinda excessive, but Carnage has been shown as being EXTREMELY powerful, and I don't think even Spidey's been hit by a full-blast axe-blade before. The implication being that if he was, he'd be dead. Penetrating 11 allows him to cut into even the most uber-heroes with his blades.

-The Jason Macendale Hobgoblin was a sad story, since he basically never really got his chance. He stuck around a bit as a boring Hobby (he was already the Jack O'Lantern before that, and Marvel for some reason made another one of THEM right away as well), before making a deal with a demon, and giving us the Macfarlane-drawn uber-Hobgoblin II. Given a truly 90s twist as a faulty punisher of sins sent by God (oh those whacky Image boys, aren't they just SO HARDCORE and EXTREME?), he eventually split from the demon (which formed the even worse Spider-Man villain Demogoblin), kicked around without, but then casually got murdered by the Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin, in order to prove that HE was the best one. Quite the ignoble end for poor Jason. He got FAR more play in the 90s cartoon however (joining Tombstone, Smythe & others in that regard), debuting before all the other Goblins, and hanging around as a background villain for a long time.
-Hobgoblin II was a relatively low-end Goblin, lacking Norman's genius or Roderick's skill, but was still enough of a challenge to merit full points (he's PL 8 defensively, however).

It was poor Jason's tussle with Machine Man which made me a big fan of both characters and Steve Ditko's art.

Plus, he was one of the first villains to throw down with the symbiote costume Spider-Man.

What a bloody shame they ran his story down.
