-Box (Madison Jeffries' version) is probably my favourite Alpha Flight character, by virtue of the Rule of Cool (ie. he looked the coolest, so must therefore be the best). A big, Jim Lee-drawn robot body made for some cool visuals, and it didn't help that he could turn stuff into a Box Ship, fly around space, and do all sorts of other neat stuff. Unfortunately, his run was never that huge, and he eventually became one of those "Marvel Limbo" characters that would only pop up occasionally, tending to be controlled or going crazy or something, as tends to happen when you're a third-stringer character. He could've been something if he's stuck around with Heather in their little hook-up, but marrying non-entity Diamond Lil did him no favours. If there was a character I would make into an uber-badass if I wrote comics, it'd be Madison Jeffries.

-Not an easy guy to stat. I mean, theoretically, he could have Variable Power (with "Needs Sufficient Mass" and "Check Required" Limitations) in the "any powers" 7-point set-up, but that ignores the fact that he's always got the Box Armour with him, and he can't just make it out of anything. So I settled for using the Box Armour as a Device, and used Transform Machines to Machines to show the occasional cases where Box turns into a drill, or lets out some massive guns, or shoots out a solar burst or something. Since the Variable Power set-up I had came to about 84 points, the costs are fairly similar, so I didn't feel like it was a cheat. His "phase in" trick where he jumps into the Box Armour is pretty much him using the Transform to make a hole in whatever he's going into. Poor guy only makes PL 9 so far, but that's because his relative lack of combat training. I could've given him Growth realistically, since Box tends to appear pretty big compared to even other powerhouses, but I figured I'd leave it as normal to leave it slightly less complicated.

-Major Mapleleaf II is another Silly Lobdell Creation, being a big dorky milk 'n' cookies super-hero type with a dark secret or two (see Complications). He kicked around with Thunder, was goofy, hooked up with Puck II, and then got killed by The Collective, mysteriously being with that Alpha Flight team that faced off against the villain. Total throwaway character. His father was a one-shot hero who had his gay son die in the Northstar limited series.

-Pretty easy set-up; a weak hero (PL 7 offense, PL 9 defense) with a PL 7 Blaster steed.

-Wild Child is a pretty monstrous Sabretooth rip-off on first appearance (with the conceit that he's a younger kid, pretty short and stuff like that), though he debuted years before the Wolverine/Sabretooth rivalry actually started. It's just his bad luck that his only real significance as a character came long AFTER "Claw Guy" was one of the most copied and generic set-ups in comics. He spent a good chunk of his time as an animalistic, cranky kid in the lower "Flights", but upgraded to the main team as Weapon Omega (and later Wildheart), in a more attractive, non-bestial form. That of course didn't stick, and he ended up kicking around the X-verse for a few years (on the worst team, of course), and now he's turned evil like alot of do-nothing mutants from Marvel Limbo.

-Standard Claw Guy Scrapper build, a little bit under-pointed for a PL 9. He's dangerous, especially if he Rages (going a bit over PL 9 in that case), but lacks a fair amount of benefits.

-For statting his short-lived Weapon Omega form, simply boost the Charisma (gained confidence) to 12, and stick some of the Dodge & Attack Focus Feats into higher bonuses in Attack & Defense, getting a perfect PL 9 (135) build. I'm not sure if he had the claws in that form, though (since he held it for such a short period of time, Alphanex & Wikipedia don't say).

-Because One Guy Demanded It! The build of Groundhog, a guy who was a one-shot character introduced in "The Flight", the pre-team to Alpha Flight. The character failed bit-time, quitting in that issue. He's such a nobody, no site I can find (even Alphanex, the Alpha wiki!) has stats on him! The terra-forming suit was later formed into what became the Guardian costume. Sean Bernard was an RCMP officer investigating his partners for drug trafficking, by the by. He hasn't appeared since his one appearance.

-Standard "Guy in Power Armour" build, minus anything that's reasonably decent or effective. He's basically a brick who can dig (and possibly fly, since his drawing had big boots, and was the earlier form of the Guardian suit).

-Manbot's the most forgotten of the second Alpha Flight team (and that's saying something); a guy who was built into the recovered Box armour, and turned into a government spy in Alpha Flight. He eventually overcame his programming and turned good or something, but he basically vanished with the end of the series and never reappeared.

-A modification of the standard "Power Armour" guy, as he can't remove his armour, thus costing more. As a cyborg rather than a robot, he's not immune to Fortitude Saves or the like, but is still remarkably powerful given that he's an inaccurate, sluggish PL 8.

-Witchfire's a character I'd never heard of till I started this series of builds, and there's a good reason for that. She's just a low-rent ripoff of Raven, Magik, and any other "I'm the daughter/student of a demon" character, with a Dark Ultimate Form (tm) and the inevitable possibility of betrayal. And in Alpha Flight, she did just that as a member of the Beta Team, going evil, then getting fixed. But she sucked so bad nobody has brought her back or made much mention of her since.

-A PL 8 Magic character, she's low on accuracy, but fairly decent on power, averaging to a very low-pointed PL 8. They say she has TONS of potential (but they say that about EVERY mage in comics), but little control.

-Heather Hudson got stuck in as the leader of Alpha Flight after John Byrne killed off Guardian, viewing him as a one-note generic character. Heather ended up leading Alpha Flight for a much longer time than Mac ever did, getting a huge backstory involving Wolverine (she was one of MANY 'taken' women he loved), and got a reputation as a pretty good leader in the Marvel U, though Alpha Flight was always a bottom-level team. She was competent and strong, though, and the only female leader Marvel ever really had other than Storm (Wasp & Captain Marvel/Photon barely count in their runs). Probably the best all-around character in Alpha Flight's run.

-Heather stats up pretty much like Mac does, but is less strong in her basic form, and has a weaker Force Field (it's the same armour, but she's been shown as slightly less powerful/tough than Mac was, probably due to writer bias about women and the like), but makes up for it with greater maneuverability and more Feats.

For her later run while Mac was ALSO on the team, she wore this power armour, resulting in a slightly cheaper build:

"Vindicator Geothermal Battlesuit" Device 20 (hard to lose) [80]
Enhanced Strength 20 (20)
Super-Strength 4 (8)
Protection 8 (Extras: Impervious 4) (12)
"Thermal Force"

AP: "Ash Blast" Blast 8 (Feats: Knockback 4) -- LINKED: Nauseate 5
AP: "Lava Geysers" Blast 12 (Feats: Indirect 2) (Extras: Area-Line) (Flaws: Requires Proximity to Earth)
AP: "Cool Spring Water Mist" Cold Control 10
AP: Absorption 10 (Heat to Blast)
Flight 10 (20)-- (101 ponits)

-Batroc! Ze Leapaire is one of the classic "Crappy Super-Villains" from the 60s, usually used to combat Captain America and be a giant French stereotype, but he actually managed to stick around as a running gag and joke character. Of course, from time to time they let you know that he's actually a pretty lethal combatant, very skilled in combat.
-Batroc comes up at a balanced PL 9 (135), and is more of a threat for Cap-level human fighters than extra-powerful super-heroes with blasts and force fields and the like. But he's no laughing matter in Melee. And yeah, he technically has no super-powers, but his leaping skills pretty much test the limits of realistic human ability, so screw it.

hey, even when they don't play up his lethality, batroc's awesome. he's probably the only supervillain to have cap's back when ol wing-head got attacked by a scool of man eating sharks.

why, you may ask

because batroc said flat out getting eaten by sharks was a lame way to die

OMG, it's the never-seen-again Contest of Champions heroes (minus le Peregrine)! Woot!

Collective Man was actually kinda cool, and Sabra turned cool later when used in one of the X-Men arcs (the one with Bastion and the people-who-turned-into-Sentinels), for like, two pages, before returning to non-entity-ville.

Thorpacolypse wrote: But Saint Elmo? Really? A character named after a weak Brat Pack movie? That makes Mellencamp look like a genius name for a character!

I'm pretty sure that his name was inspired by the real Saint Elmo, after whom the phenomena of St. Elmo's fire is named. :)

In the comic, he filled the 'Thor' niche, claiming to be a lesser divinity of the northern lights, and looked like he had incredible strength and toughness, in addition to shooting lasers and the whole 'turn stuff into light' trick, which he later used to transform a nuclear explosion into a harmless lightshow.

Of the B and C-list Flighter's he was actually kinda cool.

This is just nitpicking, but if you wanted to represent natural-at-the-very-edge-of-human-ability leaping, couldn't you make it Innate?
